Thanks for yout video, i have Dell R610 but it's only work with either external/internal USB drive, it' doesnt detect SAS or SSD drive, any work around? thanks again.
Hmm, not sure - you might want to check William Lam's site, he tends to gather the most info on getting ESXi to work where it isn't supported ;) Good Luck. I guess that would be due to the storage controller in the R610 - that was supported up to ESXi 6.x - Perhaps there is another config switch or you may need to build a custom ISO with drivers - beyond my experience, but a common thing WIlliam has done.
Realtek has not developed any drivers for ESXi as per williamlam.com/2022/09/vsphere-8-productizes-community-networking-driver-fling-for-esxi.html . Your best bet would be to use a USB nic. William Lam’s blog has plenty of info on the topic. I used USB nics on my old NUCs to add secondary NIC to each of them. Back then I had to add custom driver for USB… it seems this is a bit easier these days - again, William has info on that.
@@DimensionQuest i ask this because i saw some one used gigabyte b660m ds3h, a realtek nic, and seem work flawlessly, its in chinese, so cant really understand what he saying, here is the video ua-cam.com/video/pUCGzA_wwo0/v-deo.html
Around the 40-41min mark of that video, you can hear the person say "USB LAN Card" a few times. I don't speak/understand that person's native language, and my iPhone Translator apps (tried 3 different ones) couldn't quite get a solid translation. But it seems to me that the author is using a USB NIC as I suggested as per William Lam's posts.
Hopefully you know this already, but Broadcom made the decision to STOP offering ESXi for free. As such, I've updated the title of this video to remove the reference to FREE ESXi 8 License.
Thanks for the great video and the detailed explanation. Is it possible to run this command during the upgrade via remote terminal (ESXCLI) as well? Do you have any suggestion on here? Something like "esxcli software sources baseimage list -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore/VMware-ESXi-8.0-20513097-depot.zip" with some parameters?
Sorry for the late reply here, the comment was hiding under "Held for review" - not sure why.. in any case, I have no idea... This may be worth asking in the communities as I'm sure someone like William Lam has likely come across this case or attempted it.
@fraglord89 - it looks like William Lam has just produced an article that could help. I watched the video he has in the article williamlam.com/2023/01/video-of-esxi-install-workaround-for-fatal-cpu-mismatch-on-feature-for-intel-12th-gen-cpus-and-newer.html . Although the boot option for his article is regarding the new Intel CPUs, the unsupported CPU flag boot option should also be able to get applied this way. I have not tested/validated this myself as I no longer have systems setup to do so. I just wanted to point you towards William's new article & video in case it may help your needs. If it were me, I would certainly try on a test system first if possible ;) Good luck!
I would check with William Lam’s blog as he is usually the first to post the workarounds for this type of stuff. I’m not running any i9 on my systems so I have no firsthand experience.
Unfortunately I'm not sure... If the card you have worked in an older version of ESXi, perhaps stick with the older version.. Otherwise you'll need to either: - check the vendor to see if they have custom drivers available for that card to work with ESXi, then you'd need to build a custom ISO. See William Lam's content for details on that. I have tried to stay away from situations that require that much effort ;) - get a supported RAID card - Also check the VMware communities to see if anyone else has managed to get your RAID card model to work with ESXi 8 Good luck!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!! I like keeping most of my actions in the video so I speed them up.. but even then, 20-60 seconds of silence is no good so I like these little free soundtracks for those times :)
@@DimensionQuest So far no issues; SNMP service could be started over Web Gui, I only had to set the community via CLI Even NTP service could be started over Web Gui :D
The Intel XEON X5365 is too old for ESXi 8Update 2. If you try an earlier release, you may be able to run using the workaround, but I can't say for certain.
I think there are some limits as to how far back Unsupported CPUs will go. For example, My old Intel NUC used in the video is an old enough CPU that it is not supported without using the flag... but my very old workstation build with a pair of AMD Opteron processors refused to install ESXi 8.0, even with the flag set.
hi! i have it nested with proxmox, and uhmmm to all vms when try to power on it says failed to connect (the processor is not supported t620 dell) do you have any idea how to troubleshoot it ?
I have zero experience with ProxMox... When deploying a Virtual ESXi server under VMware, there are typically some requirements in order for the nested virtual machines to power on and/or communicate. Under ESXi, you must enable the virtualization for your ESXi VM so that ESXi knows that it is capable of running virtual machines. Additionally, MAC Learning (relatively new feature) OR Promiscuous mode must be enabled on the network that the ESXi VM is attached to in order for networking to function properly.
nope last post simulair to mine I did test it on a laptop with i5 2450m cpu that needed the AllowLegacyCpu=true and worked. I did even install it on usb then tryed to boot that usb on my xeon x5675 system no luck 8.01c is the last version that works.
William just posted an update with some specifics on this issue: williamlam.com/2023/10/heads-up-esxi-8-0-update-2-requires-xsave-cpu-instruction-even-with-allowlegacycputrue.html
Yes, ESXi is very particular when it comes to network cards. There are 3rd party vibs that can be used, but typically the easiest workaround is to get a USB NIC. William Lam has covered this pretty well in his blogs (both the vibs as well as the USB nics). In any case, thanks for watching and commenting!
Yeah, that's been a problem for a long time. You'll need to find/create a custom VIB for the necessary driver and get that installed. You'll need to search for details on that though as I've never needed to do that myself. Good Luck!
I don't see that EXACT model listed on William's site: williamlam.com/2022/09/homelab-considerations-for-vsphere-8.html , but it "may" work. I can't say for sure since I don't have that model to try myself... if you do try, I recommend commenting on that page as William Lam is the go-to source for this type of info. I reference his blog whenever I am exploring unsupported, nested, homelab type of configurations around ESXi.
IT WORKS! AND I got no CPU purple screen or had to not do any funky commands! Thanks for leading me there as it helped me see that version 8.0 exsi comes GA meaning network drivers are preinstalled. Therefore, I do not need fling drivers. @@DimensionQuest
Yes, people do use it in production on their existing hardware that has fallen out of VMware's HCL (Hardware Compatibility List)... However, they do it at their own risk and invalidate any support from VMware. In a business/Production environment, this risk is often not acceptable.. but in some circumstances (tight budgets, redundant hardware, etc..) people "may" find the risk acceptable.
Ventoy! That is awesome! And VERY Useful! Thanks for the video!
Glad it was helpful! I've been using Ventoy for a couple years now. It has made booting to different installers SO much easier!!!
