After watching Aoko and Alice get ripped apart by Beo again, dread and despair starts to creep in, but then you see this man. He came despite being a regular human, despite the fact that he was useless. He was running to his death, and everyone knew it. His arrival was not treated with joyous relief but confusion and concern. There was nothing he could do but die; everyone on that snowy field knew that but none moreso than him. He was going to die, but he still had promise to fulfill. Once, he wished for nothing, wanted nothing, lived for nothing. There were no tomorrows-simply an unblemished, never-ending today. But he left that world, found a life of change and convenience and met a girl who gave him a tomorrow. And throughout this new life, he struggled to payback this debt, the promise he held close. He knows he is going to die. The beast who tore apart his companions is too great. To defeat it he has to give everything, break every bone and muscle in his body to hurt it. He understands this instinctively and accepts it immediately. To pay back the debt of being given his life, he must give his life. That is why his face is of cold resignation. That is why the melody morefits a funeral than an hero's rescue. He is going to die-but better to die than to see that girl killed. It is with that grim acceptance, that the man walks to face the beast, a Mystical Phantasmal born blessed by Creation itself, a being who no Magus could dream of harming, and defeats it. It was not a miraculous victory as that would imply it was due to luck or some divine force. No, it was an humane victory. The tale of men slaying beasts is as old as time. To do so against a Phantasmal Beast seems impossible, but it is an impossible that could have only been achieved by human hands. An oft-repeated theme in the Nasuverse is how it is ultimately the regular people like Soujuurou, Kouktou, and(as much as I dislike it) even Guado who make the difference. That is what makes the moment so great. I hope that when the movie/anime is released, they recognize this fact and keep the somber yet desperate music.
Amazing comment, captures the essence and motivations of Soujuurou perfectly! Just finished reading Mahoyo a few days ago and I think he just might be my favorite character in this story. His humanity is so remarkable.
