Corn is a generic term for grain, in the nineteenth century corn was interchangeable with wheat. You see it in literature, Tolkien used corn like that, and he was a doctor of words. Corn refers to the top of the grass that flower/seed cluster that we mill into flour.
Fair enough, same with "Anti-Corn Laws" mentioned here which were not in my knowledge base at the time of reading. I can see the etymological connection (corn, kernel, etc.) but would've thought this use to be more archaic, not early 19th century.

I lolled too but I think he wasn't unaware of the humorousness of some of his remarks and ironic questions. Especially the witty remark about Weston's illustration being rather "spoony" then proceeding to make W look foolish by continuing with the soup bowl and spoon analogy and totally crushing his dumb argument.

Hey S4A, if you had to recommend ONE book, to gift someone who's generally anticapitalist but still has prejudices against socialism, in order to inform and educate them on the matter, what would it be?
The State and Revolution by Lenin has a lot of potential for explaining the things "western leftists" tend to get stuck on the most. I'd say this, combined with Principles of Communism by Engels.
I'd second S&R + POC. I don't know if it's ideal for the uninitiated, but Lenin's Imperialism is the other one that was really transformative for me. He goes into detail about "crony capitalism" and addresses many of the ideas/arguments raised by liberals/libertarians. It might hit the target for certain people.
Did Marx ever address where the phenomenon of “inflation” comes from? We know (given the handy summary given at 2:12:33 - 2:13:26) that prices *can* have these sort of organic components, but what of the times when they don’t, i.e., when capitalists can drive up prices for everything (inflation)? (I’m aware this is later touched on, but are there any dedicated works on the topic by Marx?)
the english word 'corn' was used to describe grains generally before its specific application to refer to American maize. Within the British Isles, this switch occurred as late as the interbellum period. also, race is indeed being used to refer to the human race
Especially during the later half of the piece, I kept being reminded of how capitalists and their lapdog economists complain that raising wages would necessarily raise prices (wage-push inflation), thus causing a decrease in real wages for those whose wages did not increase and possibly cancelling out the increase in real wages for those whose wages did increase. I assume these same arguments were made by the likes of those Marx was arguing against, if not in less sophisticated terms. Such arguments of course only hold water in theory if, as Marx points out, the rate of profit does not fall proportionately to the rise in wages or, when looking at the larger economy, wages don't decrease in another areas. Thankfully, even conservative economists in general don't push this crap anymore, though they still fall back on relying almost solely on supply and demand for explaining changes in prices that may cause workers to demand higher wages. I find Marx's placement of supply and demand as short-term causes of fluxuations around the real value of commodities subservient to larger economic laws a better explanation of value determination.
I try to tell people not to fall for it, but people are scared and with good reason. The thing I try to tell them is that ai is unlikely to replace jobs, so much as change jobs or create an entirely new economy. It will be brutal, and I think people will get radicalized by the ai job crisis. But that's gonna backfire big time for the capitalists. They are just so cocky and think that they will always be in charge.

I think there is a limit to the number of likes you can have, I think its something like 5000. If you go to your account's Playlists, you should have an automatically generated one of "liked videos." IIRC it's capped at 5000, so I think your oldest likes drop off. This is all anecdotal based on my own observations, I haven't researched it, so I may be wrong.

Yeah I wanted to say that too, in German corn refers to cereal in general. So it might have been a poor way of translating it!
