At this point, after seeing the capabilities that his son was wielding, and witnessing how brightly he was shining through it, then and only then did he realize what he had wasted, and what he neglected for so long, "his son's own ambitions and dreams". A father's resolve isn't to create someone that resembles him...but to create something better.
I love how Cinema Wins looks at movies and goes "You know what? Good movie, I like it, if you don't good for you." We need more channels loving media unironically just because it scratches that part in our brain, whatever it is for you :)
I also like him appreciating the the fact that it’s animals as the characters. I’ve seen criticisms that say “Well there’s not reason plot-wise that they have to be animals, so that’s bad.” Like? No? It’s a kids movie. Kids love animals. Hell adults love animals. Sometimes art is for fun, not just a cut and paste formula. It’s annoying too cause those same people would say it’s uncreative if it was just humans…
@@DeathnoteBB well no it's that they do nothing with the fact that they're animals. They make like 2 unique animal jokes and besides that they could have been anything. It was just to make the movie stand out more and to get people to see it
I think this quote from his mega mind video really sums it up nicely “with very little exceptions, every movie is somebody’s favorite… and I like to see why” which is a great mentality to have IMO, and I think he’s got a point.
I love how "I'm Still Standing" isn't just about Johnny's relationship with his father, but can also apply to Ash and her cheating boyfriend, hence why the shot cuts over to her during the song!
According to “word of god” Gunter just joined the contest for fun, he didn’t even want to win, he just wanted a chance to have fun doing his favorite thing.
Missed win maybe: As Mina starts singing near the end and starts getting more enthusiastic, her ears begin to unfurl. As she opens up, so do they. In fact at the end I think she no longer has them curled up against her face.
Yes! I love this! It's actually a recurring theme throughout the movie, whenever she's feeling especially insecure, she curls them closer across her face.
@@impofstpete727 Well to be more specific the actual scrap moon is not replaced per-se since the scrap moon is not there for the performances anymore but the symbolism still stands. It would have been more accurate to say that with Mina's performance bringing down the house the bright full moon of the heyday returns.
There’s also some symbolism in how the moon had been a man-made prop in the performances it featured in, up until Mina’s where it revealed the actual moon itself. It both brings it back to the original performance with Nana, which was a full moon, but also brings it a step higher that anything else, because it’s, in a sense, genuine this time.
Same can be said about don't you worry about a thing. I think it helps that (and this may just be a rumor) that Stevie helped and approved of Tori's cover of his song.
I'm surprised that Johnny's dad first seeing Johnny on the TV didn't get a win. The way he just swells up with pride watching his son absolutely crush the stage. "That's Johnny! THAT'S MY SON!" And then the silent wide-eyed horrified realization of just how huge and horrible mistake he made. "...that's my son..." Followed by him going to the window to think a moment, seeing the lights from the performance in the distance... and then just deciding, at that moment, not a god damn thing in the world is going to stop him from being there to tell Johnny how proud he is, that he loves him, and he is sorry. I felt like that was one of the single most powerful moments of the film, and does a WHOLE LOT with just the delivery of two lines and facial expressions... like, near PERFECT cinematography.
Whenever he does Sing 2, Johnny’s relationship with his Dad and Uncles BETTER be counted as a win Won’t say anymore to avoid spoilers for anyone wanting to see it who hasn’t, but it’s, while not the best thing of the movie, IS STILL WORTH NOTING DAMNIT!
You forgot the most important part about Johnny’s dad. Johnny’s dad, in an effort to get to Johnny before the song finishes, performs feats of strength and agility indicative to gorillas, which were not seen by any of the gorillas throughout the entire film. It’s the most animal any of the animals actually animals through the entire movie. That’s how desperate he was to get to his son and tell him how much he loved him and how much he supported him for following his dream of singing. His paternal instincts broke the wild side out of his character into the forefront, and I am all for it.
It's similar to what happens in Sing 2 with Johnny, when he gets frustrated with the Dance Teacher and breaks his skateboard. Johnny, however, is afraid of that side of himself till he realizes that he can focus this energy into something else. Like he did during his performance in the show. I love these little details :3
One thing I really like about Mike's character is how consistently awful he is. He didn't show up at the end to perform because he had a change of heart, he only did it to show off. I also like that his massive ego is what ultimately got him killed
Erm, I like to think they somehow got away from the bigger predators. Sure Mike wasn’t smart but come on. I’m pretty sure murder is murder and murder is illegal.
When Meena hits that high note and the wall behind her collapses, I just processed how it reveals the full moon behind her! Their performance was able to restore the theatre back to its natural glory from Nana’s days of performing, such a great little detail!
This movie is genuinely so sweet and despite being advertised as a cringy kids movie it's a good time. And this channel brought me joy this whole year. Thank you for sending off this holiday season with something so nice. Thank you for your optimism.
@@sillygoosetaur Even if it's cringe, it definitely better than that dumb Minions movie that came before it. That movie was completely unbearable and just blatant advertising.
OK ONE LAST ONE I PROMISE! I think it’s also worth noting that Buster, while while not always the most considerate, does actually have an eye for talent. He realized the potential of putting rosita and Gunter together. His notes on Johnny’s sheet (seen when Johnny attempts to take the locked chest) mention how he feels Johnny lacks discipline which he kind of does and improves on that. And even though Ash didn’t like cheesy pop she WAS good at performing it and Buster recognized that just from her backup singing in a heavy rock song. And when he actually did hear her sing a piece of her own song he immediately recognized her strength with that and wanted it added to the show.
Another win is Rosita's growth, starting from the selection scene. She's so "invisible" we hardly see her behind the others, but she is there, and the fact that Buster calls her after he dismissed everyone is kind of a build-up to her own character growth; She's quiet and simple, hidden in the audience, but has amazing talent, and with Guenther's help she slowly lets go of her reservations and truly blooms to the point of being in charge of rebuilding the stage and encouraging everyone.
I love this movie a LOT actually, and I'm glad to see someone talk positively among the sea of negativity it gets! Another win id give it is how they didn't give some forced love triangle between Rosita, her husband Norman, and Gunther. Gunther is just supportive of Rosita and Norman realizes he wasn't giving her the attention she deserved. Really good way to end their arc!
I was worried about that too, I'm really glad that it's more of Rosita showing what she can do and Gunther helps her with that, not a "Gunther understands me, you don't" kinda thing.
THIS ive said it before too but never understood why it needed to be hated honeslty i genuinly loved the stories that they all presented! very realisitc and the songs and the characters i love it all especially its little quirks it is as a movie! anyways hope i wasnt rude i just agree and am glad someone also agrees and ya put into words from my brain lmfaoo ANYWAYS ILL STFU NOW
Personally, this is one of the better movies made by illumination since I notice alot of people hate modern Music-box movies just because they are considered cheap ways to gain an audience, but honestly this movie is pretty good for that category The movie manages to give a reason for all these modern songs, it's a talent show and people (animals actually) just pick the songs that resonate the most with them, just like any real life competition would and it manages to make interesting characters all through the movie along with the high stakes it makes for a great movie!
I have to agree with you on that completely. Though I agree with most people about hating Jukebox Musicals, this one actually has a reason to be a Jukebox musical, which automatically makes it better then most of the movies that fit into that genre.
As a person who hates jukebox musicals with a burning passion I have to agree with you on this movie actually had a reason to be a jukebox Musical and its sequel was all the better
As a 45 year old man, this movie is my guilty pleasure comfort movie, a place now shared with the sequel. It's just so wonderfully sweet, and there's not enough of that in the world these days.
I love that most of the contestants actually do show up at the pool house to comfort Buster when in any other film they would all be mad at him. And I’m glad they actually show Buster apologizing. Also The completely hopeless state he is in contrast so harshly with his demeanor had throughout the rest of the film
One of my FAVORITE little things is how Becky's instrument contrasts brilliantly with Ash's. Ash's guitar takes work to play back up to Lance; Becky's tambourine on the other hand is made to be a support instrument, to the point that it would take more work to even TRY to play on Lance's level than it's worth. And it perfectly fits their roles in Lance's life; Ash is the girlfriend who is Lance's equal and even better but is being constantly shoved down; Becky on the other hand is perfectly fitting for Lance's expectation of "my girlfriend is my doormat".
Glad someone is finally giving this movie some credit instead of hating it solely because it’s a Illumination picture and had unfortunate timing to be released shortly after Zootopia.
Agreed. I think Sing’s character animation is fantastic and a solid 9/10. Zootopia just happens to be a 10/10 character animation. But because Zootopia story is aiming to be more realistic it’s also realistically darker and more shadowy. Sing is aiming for fun so it’s a lot brighter and more colorful which I enjoy more
Honestly? I’m really glad I could finally hear some good critiques about this movie, since this movie got a lot of flack. I loved seeing it in theatres.
saaaame! i adore this movie and it's just a fun time, with good messages in it too. I think most of the hate it gets is because it's an Illumination film and ofc the comparison to Zootopia (which is absurd because as the video says they came out nine months apart) and that it's called a 'karaoke' film. But what's wrong with that? Nothing in my book -3-
@@sansfangirl4life439 This film is more like Trolls which also happens to be a "Jukebox" Musicial. But I will always see this as a better Trolls, it's superior in every category (except for the animation) from the plot, characters, message, and soundtrack.
@@sansfangirl4life439 Yes but the only real singer was Justin Timberlake and the story was more basic then Sing was. Even though Sing has a basic premise, it has a great theme and (in my opinion) better singers and better songs.
I think that the reason Sing isn't cringy is because unlike movies with random musical numbers, the placement of the songs are more smooth and natural.
When Ash is talking about how Lance is an artist to Buster you can actually see Johnny listening in in the background like “Hmmm she already has a boyfriend?” . I used to think that was a subtle hint that Johnny and Ash were going to end up together in the sequel.
Another bit I really love is how it’s during the “regrets” part of Mike’s song that Johnny’s dad shows up, apologises, hugs hiw son and says “I’m proud of you”. Just. Stab in the gut a few times and yank my heart out. Also, he didn’t stay out of prison either bc he was also like “they’ll be looking for me. Come visit though, yeah?” so he fully understood that he was in the wrong both with the law and with his son and that the only reason he broke out (which we saw was fairly easy for him to do, so the only reason he hadn’t prior was bc he didn’t have any will or motivation to leave) was to see his son in an attempt to start mending there relationship after he recognised he had completely destroyed it. So many people hate on this movie, saying it tries to focus on too many things at once, there’s too much overlap, heck, even that the only overarching plot is a talent show contest. So for someone to finally show the praise one of my favourite movies deserves is such a great Christmas present. Thank you Cinema Wins. 💚
"Sing" has a special place in my heart. It was the first movie that my godchild fell asleep on me holding him while watching. I didn't think it was Scarjo singing, but I was SHOCKED to learn it was. I L-O-V-E Tori Kelly because she's such a great singer and such a sweetheart in person. She treats her fame like a gift and her fans like people. She even asked me to sing for her and I sang "Eye on the Sparrow" which had her in tears. I'm not bragging. I'm just saying that she's been around epic singers and yet still can enjoy and feel the emotions from "the little guy." I was going through a rough time then and she hugged me as if we were best friends without knowing what was wrong. The movie was fun and I laughed at it because I know people who remind me of these characters. Gunther is my cousin Vincent, Mike is my brother. . .but bro can't sing, Ash is every girl I work with apparently, and Meena is me because I always could sing, but was and still am, shy until I get going. Then I just perform without thinking. Like Meena, my voice and song choice was soulful and shocked people who hadn't heard it yet. The emotions that "Sing" brings me are part of my memories, nostalgia, and new takes on great aongs. Love it.❤
He didn't notice this, but when the elephant literally brings down the house, the moon is full behind it, meaning that the pieces have been put back together, and is even better than before. P.S. I hope you see this CinemaWins, I'm a huge fan.
Wanna talk irony. Buster could've easily come up with the prize money if he just charged like $5 or $10 per person to sign up for the contest. It's a small amount of money most people can easily part with and the line of applicants means the overall pot would be pretty huge.
Is that $5 just to audition though? Because the pool of entries in the actual contest was pretty small. If he'd charged $100 to enter, which none of them would have paid, it still would barely cover expenses. I can't imagine people wanting to pay $5 just to get rejected before they could participate in the contest.
@BonaparteBardithion yeah, no one would pay to be rejected, but they would definitely pay for the *chance* that they'd actually get in. People pay all the time to audition for shows n stuff, it helps cover for production costs, prize money, etc. Sure, some people would probably turn around, not wanting to pay, but the amount of people that'd stay to audition, even after finding out there's a cost to do so, would likely greatly outnumber the people that left.
So, fun fact: there is no conclusive proof that elephants are afraid of mice! The prevailing theory is that they're startled by their quick moments since their eyesight isn't great. It's not the mice, it's the jittery movements they make!
I didn't know that. But, if you look back at the scene, he does appear pretty suddenly and is making a lot of swift hand gestures, so there's that to account for.
Something that I love most about Johnny’s performance is that he’s sitting on a stool at the start cause he’s still kinda nervous, but at the end he’s kicked the stool out of the way being confident and yes….*STANDING!* God I fucking love the details this movie shows! 🥰
Did no one else get chills during this movie when Taron Egerton sings? Like my goodness his vocal range is awe inspiring and beautiful I’d personally give his vocal performance when singing at least a fair 25 wins
Genuinely, this movie has a lot more to me than what Zootopia has. I know it might just be the music and stuff, but this feels like a real world lived in. Instead of just a tension of "racism" and desire to solve a mystery throughout the whole movie, it's just a "natural" world where animals can be anything they want. Some rob banks. Some have touchy relationships. Some have secret talents of singing that should not be hidden away. I don't know how to describe it. It's not a movie of epic proportions like an Avengers movie or a mastercraft Disney/Pixar movie, it's just a good, solid, and pretty fun movie with some catchy songs to enjoy and remember it by....
Honestly yeah, Zootopia was great when it first came out however a little too on the nose and after rewatching it a couple of times it seems to age not so good as time passes because of its message. Thankfully that's not the case for Sing since its just about coming out of your comfort zone to show everyone what you can do.
I think the reason you feel that way is because Sing is a lot more grounded in our reality, whereas Zootopia created what's essentially a high fantasy setting. The animals in Sing are quite literally just us but as critters (which is not a bad thing, but obviously is less original), whereas the animals in Zootopia have a significantly different societal structure. I love Zootopia, but one thing that definitely didn't age well was the whole commentary on discrimination, and I think the reason why is both because of how hamfisted it was and because the social dynamics of the world of Zootopia just flat out don't translate well to ours.
I had a horrible depression Phase Last summer and I was unironically watching Sing and it's sequel almost every day and it gives me comfort and gave me I just love this movie more then I can say And I feel like I'm getting roasted for this
If I recall correctly, elephants are one of the few animals that cannot jump. And with that being said, Meena’s bouncing around on stage when she builds up that confidence and energy to sing.
So I absolutely love this movie!! There really isn't any conventional "bad guy" it's just everyone trying to make their lives better and the music...love it all!! I'm excited for the sequel!!
Actually the Jennifer Hudson character is the villian and she was one of three characters I didn't like which says a lot this movie SLAPS (In my opinion)
@@diamondstuddedpunchingbag4718 i was scared if the sequel would be bad but damn the sequel is same as this but more characters and bigger situations. There's also a villain too.
No but for real the song choice works so well with the movie, and Meena pushing throughout her anxiety is SO satisfying. Also I LOVE TORI KELLY AND THE ONLY REASON I KNOW HER IS THIS MOVIE AND PENTATONIX
ALSO ALSO realizing that the rebuilding of the theater to the lyrics “Once there was a way to get back homeward” not only is signifying the theater’s glory days being the same song that was sung at the beginning when the theater was at its height, but also signifies Buster and the others finding their “way back home” to the theater they all loved
Omg I'm so glad you covered Sing because it deserves allll the positivity As a theather kid, I am just so so fond of this movie T-T I especially love the characters, the way their storylines unfold and, to my own surprise, I even like how they aren't all likeable 100% of the time, actually it feels like everyone's a little bit of a criminal at some point in this movie xD but this doesn't really stop you from rooting for them (except Mike maybe lol) I love every detail you made me notice and I adore the original parts of the soundtrack and how much care went into it, like how in addition to Set it all free there's also a released full version of the song Ash and Lance sing at the auditions just because they knew we would collectively throw our wigs at Scarlett Johansson's singing in it lol I still listen to these songs on a regular basis :"
What I love the most of your channel is how, even if I don't like some of the movies you cover (like this one) I still get a kick of seeing what works for you about it.
That’s what I love about him, no matter how bad or mediocre a movie is, no matter what general audiences think of a movie, he will ALWAYS find good things about it and always find some merit in the movie. It’s a lot better then someone like Cinema Sins who just has pointless nitpicking that doesn’t contribute to critique
This is why I love watching both this and CinemaSins. Especially when they do the same movies. Yes I have lot for a lot of movies but I see the issues in them too
@@twilightchaosangel011 I think that after watching few CinemaSins videos, it can be easily noticed how nitpicky and lazy it is, really. Not to mention that it's not good to experience such negativity about anything during a time where you're supposed to be relaxing and/or entertaining yourself.
I was smiling the entire time I watched this video because Sing is probably my favorite Illuminations movie, excited to watch Sing 2, which came out today. Great timing!
Dude this is why I love your channel; the way you manage to find so many positive things to say about anything and everything is just so wonderful, acknowledging the talented people that worked even on trainwrecks of movies, or in this case soulless cash grabs, and showing the potential of the worst of cinema-- it's just great, thank you for being so open minded and optimistic, in an era where everyone loves getting excessively angry at the smallest things this is truly important
At 12:32, there's definitely gotta be another win here: I made the same joke about how Rosita should get an engineering degree when I saw this movie yesterday for the first time, but she's actually putting her knowledge to use here in rebuilding the theatre. It's such an interesting character trait that she just has, it's never focused on or explained and I kinda like that about her. This movie's all about her performing, but that doesn't mean she can't have other aspects to her character. It's the same with the others now that I think of it, for example, Meena is good at baking and Mike likes skateboarding.
I’ve seen so many other reviewers saying this is a horrible movie just made as a giant ad or it’s just a horrible movie and made for no reason. I love this movie and it looks like it’s a huge 50/50 if people like this. So thank you for making such a good review!
So people can say what they want about Illumination. For the most part, I agree that they only really make cookie cutter, safe as hell yearly movies that bring in a younger demographic. All except for Despicable Me 1, which I think is a genuine animated classic and masterpiece for its year, alongside Megamind. But I genuinely think Sing 1 is one of the most underrated Illumination movies, my second favorite from them and is actually extremely decent to even great. This is not a bad movie at all and I hate that most people chalk it up to nothing but "another Ilumination movie" when its honestly got enough to set it apart from it's other pieces from Illumination and manages to feel genuine. The characters are likeable, the music covers are genuinely great, the visuals are quite great, and the whole ending half with the whole concert is a bop, lets not kid ourselves. Along with having some genuinely great messages like not letting yourself down and to own up to your mistakes. And some would argue its just a pop song generator but like... That's the point? Its a talent show and a musical. Its not just random needle drops to be random or make the kids get excited, they are songs that resonate with the characters with the end goal of it being a concert that saves a *theater*. You know, a place where musicals take place. So yeah, they are a bit cash grabby but at least they make sense and aren't too on the nose. And the characters all have some pretty genuine struggles, they aren't there just to be there. Rosa is tired of her everyday housewife life and wants to break free, Johnny wants a life outside of crime and just wants his father to accept him for that, Ash is trying to deal with a break of that has actually emotionally hurt her and is coping through the show, and more, and the other ones too all of them are good. They aren't just there to be there, they have actual reasons and I think the movie actually juggles the glimpses and growth of their lives rather well. And Buster doesn't want to tarnish his dad's legacy, hes the most morally grey with what he does through the whole movie. Hes got an "end justifies the means" mindset but it's not like he doesn't care for his castmates either. I think he's a decent protagonist. And a lot more. Unlike most Ilumination things, I mostly only have positive to say over this one. And I really think people didn't and still don't give this movie a proper chance. Its not a masterpiece, far from it. But it is definitely Illumination's best work since the first Despicable Me. Give this one a chance people, it really deserves it.
"all characters have some genuine struggles, they aren't just there to be there" Except for Gunter. He's there for a good time. I legitimately respect that Rosita's arc is about, as you put it, breaking free without throwing away her marriage or role as a mother. Her family was never the villian. She just needed something for self-fulfilment and her family completely supports that once they learn about it.
@@ladylaurel5941 oh yeah, I know! But Despicable Me and Megamind were cut from the same cloth of idea. "What if the villain turned into a hero?" And really, DM1 overtook Megamind in popularity, though I am thankful it's become a cult classic in recent years. So I really think you can't not mention Megamind and Despicable Me 1 in the same sentence since they released the same year and had a similar theme, but were both very good movies in their own respective ways. You really must honor both if you acknowledge one.
Ah, that’s fair! I get what you mean. Both are pretty good movies in their own right with similar premises- plus came out in the same timeframe if I remember correctly. So it actually does make sense to mention the two together in how close they are. And I also fully agree on that its good to see Megamind get the recognition it fully deserves.
Johhny by far had the most believable character, and seeing his Dad break out of jail is the absolute PEAK of the movie. But I LOVE MEENA SO MUCH OH MY GOSH TORI KELLY IS INSANE THATS WHY I FOLLOWED HER AAAAAAAAAHHHH
Man, seeing positivity for this movie feels so good. And all the details you mentioned that I never noticed before, especially 9:58? Brilliant. Also, Set It All Free is easily one of my favorite songs, Taron’s I’m Still Standing BOPS, and Golden Slumbers gives me chills every single time. Great singing all around
One of the best things I’ve decided to do this year was to subscribe to this channel. For the longest time I’ve seen Cinema sins and I’m glad that Cinema wins were the opposite. Nothing bad in pointing out some flaws but wholesome content made while reacting and giving points to well known and well loved films are just amazing. When the world feels overwhelming I sit down open a soda and watch a wholesome guy react to movies wholesomely, so thanks Cinema Wins.
I think about this so much. Who the heck would’ve won!?!? Everyone was FANTASTIC! I’m saying it’s between Johnny and Meena. Though I love Johnny with my whole heart, I’m leaning more towards Meena. I mean, she broke the damn wall of the stage, for crying out loud! But everyone was amazing.
I don't think we could get a clear winner, considering that all of them are outstanding in their own ways. But my vote would go for Johnny, too. If I looked at it more professionally, I think either Rosita's and Gunther's double act or Meena's act would've made the cut. Sure, Mike had a great voice, but it came more to who made the masses truly move. And those prof choices are also just slim speculations, because, like I said, each of them is unique and talented in their own special way. You can't really compare them with one another :3
In all honesty, when Johnny was getting ready to steal the money from Moon's office, when he finds the note papers of each singer, he was the only one that Moon put an extra note on, "Natural Born Singer" Johnny would've had a good advantage because of that.
You also got to love that the dress Ash wears is the same dress (maybe trimmed down, but the material is the same) as the dress she wore while singing “Call me Maybe”. A nice metaphor to say she doesn’t regret the past and is now embracing it.
This movie surprised me with my older brother. He was that serious, work hard man that I didn’t think he would like a kids movie. So when he watch this movie with me, he told me that he actually like the movie. I still remember being upstairs in my bed to go to sleep and remember him playing this movie down stairs. Rest In Peace big bro ❤️
It gets such a bad rap but it's such a sweet movie! And this movie's songs slap, I still listen to "Faith" and Tori's Kelly's cover of "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" regularly it's just so good
One detail that I liked was that the air mattress that Buster sleeps on in Eddie’s pool house is a flotation device that can be seen just outside the pool house earlier when Eddie is on the diving board
He’s definitely going to love Sing 2, it’s a great movie on its own to the point where literally me and my uncle couldn’t tell which one was better. And he loves the first one
This movie came out right around the time I started feeling like I was too old for movies like this. I’m glad I can appreciate movies like this now. Truly a pretty underrated movie
I don't really care about what anyone has to say about this movie, when it came out my great grandma liked to watch it. so in turn I liked watching it too because I get to watch it with her...years from now, when she'll unfortunately inevitably pass, I'll look back at this movie as something to remind myself of her and the memories we had together...and that in turn beats any negativity I'll have towards this movie, or any movie that I watched with the people I love.
I love that this movie was given some love, it’s well deserved. But I am also VERY excited for the Snyder cut. All around great Christmas gift, thank you Cinemawins.
4:30 Fun Fact: it was this performance that convinced Elton John and the other performance to give Taron the role for Elton John. They already had previous engagements with Kingsman, so the fact that he sings Rocketman (be it in an “Atlantic” accent) was the final encouragement they needed. Alternate universe where Justin Timberlake or Tom Hardy landed the role…YUCK! Also love your videos would live to see you cover Rocketman. It’s a favorite!
Sing is hands down one of my most favourite animated movies ever. So this just makes me too excited. Also, Hi, sir, could you maybe one day do video-wins on Encanto, please? It's absolutely amazing and I would love to see you pinpoint every detail that caught your eye. The characters are amazing, the story is nicely written and don't even let me get started on the songs...!
I honestly really like this movie. It's nice to see it talked about more. Sing showed a bit more than Zootopia, but they are different enough that it's unfair to compare them too hard. Sing has a lot of relationships going on as well as a colorful cast of characters that are a joy to watch interact and challenge each other. I'd also love to see more people discuss it as well as other unspoken movies like Spirit Stallion of the Cimmaron, The Corpse Bride, Rise of the Guardians, Guardians of G'ahoole (yes, I know the books are better), and 9
Literally managed to watch the movie in full yesterday as I had only ever seen it in chunks on TV and I agree with every single point you made. This is actually one of Illumination's better flicks, Extremely wholesome cast (Rosita being my favorite as she just Moms everyone.) I'm really looking forward to the sequel when it comes out in the UK in January. Also not to make you jealous but I've met Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost when they were doing signings in HMV when Hot Fuzz first came out and lemmie tell you they are all SUPER sweet and even invited me and my partner at the time to a Manchester screening of the movie later that night which we sadly couldn't attend but yeah if you ever get the chance to meet any of those guys please do!
Back when I saw this movie around when it came out I was a huge fan of it for a lot of the reasons stated here, and somehow you made me love it even more, I didn't think that was possible. Fantastic job is always CinemaWins, I love this! ^^
My favorite part of this is definitely Johnny singing "I'm still standing" his voice and it portrays him and his dad beautiful and ofc me liking Johnny the most in this movie.
This movie made me sob in the theaters, simply because of the cover of "Golden Slumbers". My Nana used to sing me to sleep with that song when I would stay at her house was a small child, and she passed away 10 years this March, so to hear someone named Nana sing it again... Well, it broke me. Edit: I watched Sing 2, and I almost sobbed at the ending.
Its about bad timing and the theme of the movie itself If my monkey brain rememberes right, Zootopia came out not so long ago before this film so that gave a bad image to the movie because at first glance it seems like a copy also the ost in the movie was double edge too because people though also that the songs were put to pick the fellow kids to watch the movie But yeah this movie was great and i gave myself some nice time watching it and the music really made entertaining, really sad about the timing and the first impressions though but hey! Everyone has different opinions!
I respect a lot of the work put into this movie, but I feel like a lot of the songs were there not because of a person with creative vision, but because a corporate executive thought I'd sell better than an original piece. Which is "cringe". Also I really don't care for musicals. Very few songs in general peak my interest and many edgy 2 kool 4 skool teens think the same which I feel contributed to the problem.
@@CBionic77 I mean insofar as it's a film with animals? Sure… but isn't that overtly reductionist and ignores all the classist (predator/prey) symbolism associated with Zootopia? Sing could literally replace the animals with humans and it'd still work - they're not integral to the story. From what I can tell, these two films are nothing alike!
Sing is such an unassuming film. I wasn’t interested at all in it when I saw the trailers and only ended up watching it because I was planning on doing a review for Rock Dog and figured I oughtta compare to the last animated movie about musically inclined animals and I was really not expecting to become as big a fan of it as I was. And almost every person I’ve introduced the movie to seems to have a similar attitude “huh, I enjoyed that a lot more than I thought.” It really is a shame it came out the same year as Zootopia which is clearly the better film, but if you’re gonna ask me which film do I watch and enjoy more then it’s hands down Sing.
Despite loving all the music in the movie, even the auditions, Ash's "set it all free" still gives me chills to this day since the movie came out. Another fact about Ash's performance; She wore the "Popstar Princess" dress, just spiced it up with the jacket, so when she walked out Buster gave her a stunned expression, probably a mixture of "she's wearing the dress I told her to!" and "she made it even BETTER".
The singular gripe I have with this movie is the short runtime compared to all the parallel storylines. An extra 30 minutes tacked on to it to dig a little deeper to the main cast (outside of Buster) would have given people a real connection with what we can only call supporting cast. It's difficult to feel anything other than a "Man, that sucks" level of empathy for those you feel like you've just met. Sing 2 likely won't have this issue because the cast is already set, and we'll have a general understanding of the cast before the Title Card rolls.
Out of all the Illumination films, I think Sing comes closest to using their true storytelling potential. Most of their movies are cookiecutter, but objectively gorgeous, at least Sing manages to juggle several emotionally charged arcs, if only they didn't play it so safe, they could really compete with better films.
Surprised you didn’t win the utter devastation that the end of the second act has in this film. I mean I’m thinking the worst that’s gonna happen is buster is going to get found out for not having money and Nana is going to reject financing the show, but I never imagined that the entire theater would just collapse. 🤯 Sidenote: The first time I watch this movie was in two parts and the first part ended right after the collapse so I was pretty anxious on finishing at the next day to find out what all would happen.
Sing and Sing 2 are underrated but great movies! and have great soundtracks! Sing was the first movie soundtrack I bought hey now that Sing 2 is on netflix you think you can do everything great about Sing 2 love your channel man! keep up the good and positive work!
I ADORED this movie when I first saw it and it still bothers me that no one else gives it the proper credit so but THANK YOU for making this. Johnny's storyline made me legit cry in theaters oh yeah and the girl ash's ex cheated on her with is VA'd by Tara Strong so you know...
14:58 Also, when Mina brings down the set, the moon is full, like it was before. It's kind of saying that Buster is getting back on the rails and the theater is getting more appreciation again. At least that's what I think.
Hoooly crap, I can't believe I never noticed. When Meena literally brings the house down, the broken, patched up moon gets replaced in-frame by the Full moon, mirroring the scenes with the theater in its glory days! Props to that fun little bit of symbolism showing the tables were turning on the theater coming back to be loved by the audience watching her performance
I love this channel. Everyone these days seems to resent the idea of just liking things without having to be ironic about it and it’s so refreshing to not see that here
12:15 I actually got excited at this version of Hallelujah because it was not just including but showcasing one of the verses that wasn't in Buckley's version. This verse in particular is arguably the thesis statement of the song and I love that it got some recognition.
You know what I appreciate about Mike? For me, he captures these two disparate sides of Seth MacFarlane that I struggled to mentally integrate for the longest time: the crudeness of his writing on Family Guy and this incredible old-fashioned crooner/musical theater voice.
I genuinely love this movie. I have a couple problems with it (I really don't like Mina's singing style, for example) but it's all personal things that don't overly subtract from an enjoyable experience. And there were a couple of emotional gut punches that really hit home for me (most notably, Johnny's dad saying "I'm so proud of you" had me in tears in seconds). Solid and enjoyable.
@@--Cat-- Okay, first it was our crab lord, now you. Dearest random UA-cam commenter, please tell me what's your beef with Guardians of Ga'Hoole. Honestly curious. I adore that movie and books to the bits and genuinely find only very little flaws. The animation is still revolutionary even now.
@@rexberkova7328 I don't actually have a problem with it. I was just referencing Shaff. The Story is a little too boring at times, and they change a good deal from the books that actually builds alot of tension and character arcs. I guess you could say my main problem is that it feels rushed and sorta bland in the story department. But fuck yes is it absolutely gorgeous. Like goddamn animators, you didn't have to go that hard.

That scene where Johnny's dad says, "That's my son" then comes to his revelation, and repeats "that's my son" it get's me every time.

Bonus point for him pulling on the bars in sync with Johnny's yeahs.

Good movie, I like it, if you don't good for you." We need more channels loving media unironically just because it scratches that part in our brain, whatever it is for you :)
sometimes he goes “this is a bad movie but it still has good in it” and i also love that
I also like him appreciating the the fact that it’s animals as the characters.

@@jelletimmermans3916 well most movies with humans in it don't do anything with the fact that they're humans
I love how "I'm Still Standing" isn't just about Johnny's relationship with his father, but can also apply to Ash and her cheating boyfriend, hence why the shot cuts over to her during the song!
It's the best song in the movie tbh
Appropriately, watching that movie and finding that song actually helped me on my way to getting over one of my worst breakups at the time.

Also when she brings down the house the broken moon made of scraps is replaced with the bright full moon of the theater's heyday.
@@bobbys332 Whoa. I need to go back and look for that.
To this day I still jam out to this movie's version of "I'm still standing" it's a bop.
LITERALLY 😭😭 it’s a banger. And the Mouse’s version of the final curtain

ME TOO, I LISTENED TO IT YESTERDAY!
I agree 100%! Whenever I hear it on my Spotify list, I have to hear it a few times before I move on to the next one 😂😂
I'm surprised that Johnny's dad first seeing Johnny on the TV didn't get a win.
The way he just swells up with pride watching his son absolutely crush the stage. "That's Johnny! THAT'S MY SON!"
And then the silent wide-eyed horrified realization of just how huge and horrible mistake he made. "...that's my son..."
Followed by him going to the window to think a moment, seeing the lights from the performance in the distance... and then just deciding, at that moment, not a god damn thing in the world is going to stop him from being there to tell Johnny how proud he is, that he loves him, and he is sorry.
I felt like that was one of the single most powerful moments of the film, and does a WHOLE LOT with just the delivery of two lines and facial expressions... like, near PERFECT cinematography.
Agreed one of my favorite parts (also I love Johnny’s voice)
Basically, "I fucked up, time to make sure my son knows I'm proud of him. THIS WALL FLIMSY! *YEET!"*
This is the scene I always come back to for this film. It’s so well done!
Whenever he does Sing 2, Johnny’s relationship with his Dad and Uncles BETTER be counted as a win
Won’t say anymore to avoid spoilers for anyone wanting to see it who hasn’t, but it’s, while not the best thing of the movie, IS STILL WORTH NOTING DAMNIT!
THIS
You forgot the most important part about Johnny’s dad.

No, I need MORE!
Another win is Rosita's growth, starting from the selection scene. She's so "invisible" we hardly see her behind the others, but she is there, and the fact that Buster calls her after he dismissed everyone is kind of a build-up to her own character growth;
She's quiet and simple, hidden in the audience, but has amazing talent, and with Guenther's help she slowly lets go of her reservations and truly blooms to the point of being in charge of rebuilding the stage and encouraging everyone.
They even made that short where Gunter babysits establishing that he's gone from work friend to family friend.
I was worried about that too, I'm really glad that it's more of Rosita showing what she can do and Gunther helps her with that, not a "Gunther understands me, you don't" kinda thing.
gunter also has mayor "gay best friend" vibes.

ANYWAYS ILL STFU NOW
Personally, this is one of the better movies made by illumination since I notice alot of people hate modern Music-box movies just because they are considered cheap ways to gain an audience, but honestly this movie is pretty good for that category
The movie manages to give a reason for all these modern songs, it's a talent show and people (animals actually) just pick the songs that resonate the most with them, just like any real life competition would and it manages to make interesting characters all through the movie along with the high stakes it makes for a great movie!
I have to agree with you on that completely. Though I agree with most people about hating Jukebox Musicals, this one actually has a reason to be a Jukebox musical, which automatically makes it better then most of the movies that fit into that genre.
Nice pfp, how many trophies does yours have?
I like (some) jukebox musicals when it’s told in a interesting way
As a person who hates jukebox musicals with a burning passion I have to agree with you on this movie actually had a reason to be a jukebox Musical and its sequel was all the better
YES, every single popular song has a point and relates to each character so well.
Extra win - Ash turned Buster's puffy princess dress into a grunged-out girl-rocker look that is 100% perfect for her whole set!
Definitely! She found a way to make use of what was available and absolutely SERVED!!
Yee she’s no princess, SHE’S A QUEEN
The level of positivity this channel puts forth is like an oasis in a desert of negativity.
Sing is aiming for fun so it’s a lot brighter and more colorful which I enjoy more
To be fair… Illumination is kinda garbage
Aside from the first two Despicable Me movies, This movie & the sequel, Illumination's filmography is crap
I liked both, always did.

Honestly? I’m really glad I could finally hear some good critiques about this movie, since this movie got a lot of flack. I loved seeing it in theatres.
I don't understand the hate it gets I honestly thinks is better than Trolls and Zootopia (not Moana tho)
saaaame! i adore this movie and it's just a fun time, with good messages in it too.

Love it.❤
Best part of the entire movie is the “I’m still standing” scene. I love that song and this is my favorite version!
Oh that is SMAAARTTTT

Something that I love most about Johnny’s performance is that he’s sitting on a stool at the start cause he’s still kinda nervous, but at the end he’s kicked the stool out of the way being confident and yes….*STANDING!* God I fucking love the details this movie shows! 🥰
I'm honestly disappointed you didn't win the moment where Johnny's dad got excited seeing his son perform then realizing how bad of a dad he's been.

@@SonofTuscon99 nah he’s rly good but damn meena can sing
Even though they're both about animals, they're completely different genres so I don't get the comparison.
Yeah! It’s like Luca, but with music
A feel good movie if you may.

If I recall correctly, elephants are one of the few animals that cannot jump. And with that being said, Meena’s bouncing around on stage when she builds up that confidence and energy to sing.
You’re right elephants can’t jump since they don’t have the “spring” in their legs other animals don’t have
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the best part about Meena besides (her performance obviously), is the way she pushes through her anxiety
The bears: am I a joke to you
@@Anonymous_1827 I mean yeah...I guess they are the bad guys...but they aren't the main protagonist's enemy. Like I said...no conventional bad guys!!
@@Anonymous_1827 Yes because they had no real stance in the plot, the only arguable villians are Mike or Nora (sometimes)
@@diamondstuddedpunchingbag4718 i was scared if the sequel would be bad but damn the sequel is same as this but more characters and bigger situations. There's also a villain too.
Tori Kelly’s version of “Don’t you Worry ‘Bout A Thing” legit gave me goosebumps when I watched it in theaters. That high note she hits is insane
I always tear up a bit when she starts singing. Something about the shy character coming out of her shell is always inspiring.
@@CaptainCretaceous91 I feel that
I was shocked when she didn't win Masked Singer, though I think her song choices weren't optimal.
THAT SONG IS IN MY PLAYLIST ITS SO GOOD
No but for real the song choice works so well with the movie, and Meena pushing throughout her anxiety is SO satisfying.
Omg I'm so glad you covered Sing because it deserves allll the positivity
As a theather kid, I am just so so fond of this movie T-T
I especially love the characters, the way their storylines unfold and, to my own surprise, I even like how they aren't all likeable 100% of the time, actually it feels like everyone's a little bit of a criminal at some point in this movie xD but this doesn't really stop you from rooting for them (except Mike maybe lol)
I love every detail you made me notice and I adore the original parts of the soundtrack and how much care went into it, like how in addition to Set it all free there's also a released full version of the song Ash and Lance sing at the auditions just because they knew we would collectively throw our wigs at Scarlett Johansson's singing in it lol I still listen to these songs on a regular basis :"
What I love the most of your channel is how, even if I don't like some of the movies you cover (like this one) I still get a kick of seeing what works for you about it.
Yeah, it's almost always fun watching someone being positive and passionate about stuff they like.
WHAT? it doesn't come out till boxing day in Australia and i'm so jealous
It’s good
Dude this is why I love your channel; the way you manage to find so many positive things to say about anything and everything is just so wonderful, acknowledging the talented people that worked even on trainwrecks of movies, or in this case soulless cash grabs, and showing the potential of the worst of cinema-- it's just great, thank you for being so open minded and optimistic, in an era where everyone loves getting excessively angry at the smallest things this is truly important
FINALLY! A video that is positive towards this movie. I understand it has it's flaws and isn't the best but it still is a pretty good movie.
In my unpopular opinion, it's the best illumination film ever 10/10 recommended.
@@kartikadewi3270 Despicable Me 1, Sing and Sing2 are my top notches in Illumination, they're pretty relatable. .
Amen to that
@@guineapigdance3338 I second this list
@@guineapigdance3338 imo the best Illumination movies are Despicable Me 1/2 and Sing 1/2
"all characters have some genuine struggles, they aren't just there to be there"
Except for Gunter. He's there for a good time.
I legitimately respect that Rosita's arc is about, as you put it, breaking free without throwing away her marriage or role as a mother. Her family was never the villian. She just needed something for self-fulfilment and her family completely supports that once they learn about it.
Dreamworks made Megamind, actually!
@@shieldofwind7241 Sing is a complete masterpiece flawless film in my honest opinion.
10/10 recommended insanely brilliant in my opinion.
Johnny's part still gives me chills. The absolute best part of the movie and worth watching the entire movie just to get to that part
Johhny by far had the most believable character, and seeing his Dad break out of jail is the absolute PEAK of the movie.
But
I LOVE MEENA SO MUCH OH MY GOSH TORI KELLY IS INSANE THATS WHY I FOLLOWED HER AAAAAAAAAHHHH
Sing is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I've NEVER realized that Johnny caused that car accident!
You learn something new every day!
I love how he edited this when he said "Gunter's got everyone's back" Gunter gave a nod before completely disappearing.
Said it before, I'll say it countless times:
If the competition was still on, we *all* know that Johnny would have won.
I don't know. Mina had a pretty strong finale.
Mike had the best voice and best performence in my opinion, in fact it’s thanks to him I heard my favorite song for the first time
I think about this so much.
And this movie's songs slap, I still listen to "Faith" and Tori's Kelly's cover of "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" regularly it's just so good
Are you kidding me TORI'S COVER IS IN MY PLAYLIST ITS SO GOOD
One detail that I liked was that the air mattress that Buster sleeps on in Eddie’s pool house is a flotation device that can be seen just outside the pool house earlier when Eddie is on the diving board
He’s definitely going to love Sing 2, it’s a great movie on its own to the point where literally me and my uncle couldn’t tell which one was better. And he loves the first one
Meena make me laugh so hard with the song Says a little prayer
The fact that Matthew was able to give a great performance even as a cartoon koala is a testament to his talent as an actor.
Don't be sorry for anything I agree.
So basically it should be “after Sing” not “after Rocketman” cause Sing came first
Sing is hands down one of my most favourite animated movies ever.
14:10 I didn’t even know that was an original song. It captures that feel of pop/rock songs at the time.
I'd also love to see more people discuss it as well as other unspoken movies like Spirit Stallion of the Cimmaron, The Corpse Bride, Rise of the Guardians, Guardians of G'ahoole (yes, I know the books are better), and 9
I love this comment.
"Sing" is so underrated; it's wonderful to see it getting the love it deserves.
I have no idea why people call this "cringe" it's one of my favorites movies of all time
Its about bad timing and the theme of the movie itself
If my monkey brain rememberes right, Zootopia came out not so long ago before this film so that gave a bad image to the movie because at first glance it seems like a copy also the ost in the movie was double edge too because people though also that the songs were put to pick the fellow kids to watch the movie
But yeah this movie was great and i gave myself some nice time watching it and the music really made entertaining, really sad about the timing and the first impressions though but hey! Everyone has different opinions!
@@leramenanonimo The sequel is also good.
The only valid reason I see this being bad is that it came from Illumination and it was released in the same year as Zootopia.
Johnny and Ash have the best arcs in this and Sing 2, best performances imo
Sidenote: The first time I watch this movie was in two parts and the first part ended right after the collapse so I was pretty anxious on finishing at the next day to find out what all would happen.
100th like

I ADORED this movie when I first saw it and it still bothers me that no one else gives it the proper credit so but THANK YOU for making this. Johnny's storyline made me legit cry in theaters
oh yeah and the girl ash's ex cheated on her with is VA'd by Tara Strong so you know...

Also, when Mina brings down the set, the moon is full, like it was before.
It's kind of saying that Buster is getting back on the rails and the theater is getting more appreciation again.
At least that's what I think.
I'm surprised you haven't done this one yet! Glad you got to it.
Me too, a Cinema Win that I didn't know that I needed until now!
I really love this series and hope he does sing 2 soon. Johnny's song and moment legit has me cry everything i see/ hear it and deserves 2 wins
A sky full of stars is better than I’m still standing in every aspects. In fact its my most favorite song from both film.
5:46 - when he says “and he’s totally wrong”, it got me cackling.
It's one of my favourite movies ever.
The message is amazing, you wont always do what you imagined, but that doesnt mean you wont succeed
FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT THE MESSAGE. This has arguably the best Illumination message yet.
@@CBionic77 yes! love the script!

I actually got excited at this version of Hallelujah because it was not just including but showcasing one of the verses that wasn't in Buckley's version.
Have you ever done Rise of The Guardians? Think it’d be right up your alley! Criminally underrated when it came out
