You can't leave out the Grippos from the live taste test!!!! Those are the most unique ones!
Thank you!!!
Grippos are awesome
good for you
They weren't one of Kevin's (and *only* Kevin's) top six. This exercise was not a typical ATK taste test.
I know, right! I waited through the whole reveal to see what they thought, and they didn't even acknowledge the bag!
As a Cincinnati native, Grippo's all the way...and you can buy a tube of the spices and ship them anywhere.
So many great BBQ chips, but Grippo's (Cincinnati) are my favorite.
Oh dang!!! They have Grippos!!! They are the best bbq chips ever!!!
3:31 I knew it was Middleswarth just from the description and the way the chips looked.
Middleswarth is my favorite. I wouldn't have entered the kettle chip in the competition, but their wavy Barbeque is hands down the best. When the pandemic started, I stocked up on a dozen bags of them! I may run out of milk and eggs, but I had my Middleswarth Barbeque chips!
A side note: as a child I loved Salem BBQ chips, they went out of business but the Middleswarth has the exact same flavor that I loved so much!
thats crazy. i ate the reg bbq growing up and cant even look at them once discovering the kettle cooked
Grippos barbecue chips are amazing! Spicy and delicious! I love buying the seasoning and putting it on chicken.
Put the seasoning on your French fries. Dump your fries in the bag, add the seasoning and shake it up.
Man grippos should have been on that line up, the way yall teased the bag lol
Ok sheesh, I'm from Maryland and the Utz BBQ chips are great here, but I will be seeking a bag of Grippos!
I'm so pleased to see Gibbles up there. I don't think I've ever had their bbq flavor, but we grew up on their regular chips. They're thicker than something like lays and way less greasy. they have lots of bubbles on the chips and when we were little we'd pop the top of the bubble and dip it into our coke. sweet and salty heaven!
Gibbles changed even before they closed the first time. The lard taste isn't the same but they suddenly disappeared last year.....???
Great Lakes also makes a cherry bbq potato chip (it's a Traverse City, Michigan company, after all). They're delicious.
I like their purple potato chips the best.
Grippo's are by far my favorite chips
My all time favorite is Grippos. A co-worker turned me to them and I had to order them out from the company cause they werent in my area
*Utz Crab Chips are my personal fave.*
Snyder Of Berlin Original Bar-B-Q Flavored Chips are the absolute best if you like a classic lacy style chip.
Love, love, love exploring regionality in products! Even if we don’t get to those parts of the country, it’s so interesting! Who knew you could grow a special potato in Alaska!
Would be fun to focus on a region - taste and talk about its specialities. Great learning possibilities. Thanks for all you do.
Snyder's of Berlin are the best bbq chips ever. I have tried many but only one deserves the love. Snyder's beats them all. All their chips are delicious.
Agreed! I literally just posted that!
Hawaiian ❤❤❤
BetterMade BBQ chips are my personal favorite
Born and raised in Pennsylvania Middlesworth is in my blood. Moved to Alaska in 2007 been eating both of these nice choice
I grew up on Middleswarth, and 100% the BBQ have a meaty chip flavor. I've always thought it was a tallow or lard fried situation.
Tallow is what McDonald's french fries used to be fried in. That's what made them so good ... and unhealthy. But so good.
Another SUPER DUPER BBQ chip, is Zapp's Ranch Barbecue. Sensational. Absolutely sensational, but impossible to find. Years ago I had them in the Houston airport and have searched for them everywhere. Barbecue Chip Fanatics, Unite!
the plant that produced those was destroyed by hurricane IDA !! plant was located just north of new orleans .not sure if any of our plants are producing that chip zapps is owned by UTZ FOODS of hanover ,pa. you may try the website to order those chips if they are still in production .
@@robertbunnell5045Zapp’s are still around and popular here in SE Texas-The Crawtator chips are nasty though
I don't care what they found in their test, the correct answer is Grippo's out of Cincinnati.
I live near the Grippo’s plant and can smell when they are making BBQ chips
Snyder of Berlin should've been one of the chip brands from PA. My vote for best BBQ chips
Grew up in Berlin and had the aroma of the chips through town growing up.
I live in Evansville IN, and even though they are not local Grippos and a Ski are royalty here.
Love Ski!
I really enjoy the taste tests and product comparisons. Thanks ATK!
When we moved to Michigan we tried Great Lakes and they are pretty good. But if Bridget doesn’t like sweet ones she should stay away from their Michigan Cherry BBQ flavor lol but I find them to be fantastic! 😋
Martin's chips from Thomasville, PA, specifically the BBQ Waffle is the ONLY BBQ. I've lived here in York, PA for 50 years, never heard of Middleswarth.
How the heck have you never heard of or had Middleswarth? They are *the* central PA potato chip brand and absolutely in every single grocery store, gas station, sub shop, etc.
Zapps New Orleans kettle chips are amazing.
Middlesworth are king where I live (Luzerne county, Pennsylvania) I grew up with both them and gibbles… I do believe that middlesworth uses either lard or tallow… Snyder’s is another great brand… however I’m not a bbq chip fan… I prefer plain or sour cream and onion…
I'm pretty surprised to see Great Lakes potato chips from Michigan on there without seeing Better Made... Better Made BBQ are my favorite BBQ chips and being that the Faygo factory is right across the street from the Better Made factory right down Gratiot from downtown, I'd say they're the brand more closely associated with the region.
Can't believe better made got snubbed like that.
He said these are not national brands.
@@Spauny Yeah... Better Made... isn't a National Brand...
Follow the link to the full review and you'll see that Better Made was one of the 30, but didn't make their top 6 for live review.
@@DaivG It is.
American Airlines served Deep River regular chips on their flights. They were my favorite of all time.
I had Deep River at Universal Florida at the hotel we stayed at. I forget the flavor I had but they were quite good and reminded me of Zappos which I love.
I want Better Made chips on here!
Right? I can’t believe they had a Michigan brand and it wasn’t Better Made. Their BBQ variety is so unique, distinctive, and regionally iconic. Never even heard of Great Lakes Potato Chip Co.
They are from Traverse City area. Jay's, Uncle Ray's, and Utz are my favorites...
Better Made was one of the 30.
*Hahahaha, punk rock. Bridget is the cutest... Tim's Cascade BBQ chips are damn good.*
Hartley’s bbq waffle cut of Mifflin county followed by Middlesworth.
Nothing beats GRIPPOS BBQ chips and as another commenter stated the seasoning blend is great on chicken or even ribs as a dry rub
This one will ruffle some feathers! Excited to see who wins each region!
They didn't have regions represented... 4 of them were from the northeast.
@@brockreynolds870 There were many more than six, but most of the responses for inclusion came from Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Ballreich’s potato chips out of Tiffin, Ohio were a staple in our house growing up.
The state of Pennsylvania makes the best potato chips, period.
Dieffenbachs and Goods are the best. Bickels is another fave
I grew up eating Middleswarth chips but they had a different label back in the day. Their sour cream and onion were really OTT (too salty, too much artificial sour cream taste), but their regular and BBQ chips were huge winners to me.
There are no red hot riplets from the Old Vienna company in St Louis 😭 they’re spicy but they make a bbq chip too
We would always get Middleswarth chips when my gram from central PA would visit-very nostalgic.
love chips and love chip reviews. would like to see more
The best BBQ chips ever were Lay’s Tangy Carolina BBQ and they discontinued them. They were the absolute best.
You are so correct. They were fantastic. Why on earth would they cancel something so good? They also cancelled Masterpiece Barbecue as well. I need to be on the advisory board at Lays and straighten them out.
I loved the Carolina BBQ and keep looking for them. Maybe someday.
Those had a nice mustard tang which is actually what got me to like mustard.
@@Confoundedjoe I enjoyed how hot but tangy they were. Great chip I’m disappointed isn’t made anymore. If anyone knows of a similar chip please tell.
Tangy Carolina was a copy of Golden Flake's bbq chips
The best potato chip is Tim's Jalapeno chips from the PNW.
*100%*
Gosh. I was hoping to hear about something special in my area. Not just Texas. South Texas. Thanks for the fun test.
It doesn't look like there were any brands for Texas included. However, there were some constraints on the brands that were chosen, including a shipping deadline. So if the company couldn't get their product to ATK's Kevin Pang within a week, they would not be included.
Uncle Rays bbq is my fav so far, but i need to try more of the other regional chips
There used used to be a BBQed potato chip I loved back in the 1970's. There was a hillbilly dude on the front of the bag. I think the brand was "Ozark". They were the absolute best chips ever!
Utz Kettle Classics Smokin' Sweet BBQ Crab chips
Yes
The Route 11 chips sitting on the table but not included in the tasting was such a tease. That one's the best, fo sho
Zapp's is the best!!!!
Apparently Kevin likes Zapp's too, but because they have national distribution they were excluded.
Humpty Dumpty is a favorite brand in New England. They make a great BBQ chip. There's also a small company in Maine - Fox Family Potato Chips - that has an excellent BBQ chip (among other flavors). Great episode ATK!
Was coming here to mention Humpty Dumpty. Great BBQ chips.
Both were included in the taste test.
@@sandrah7512 Thanks! I had not looked at the full review. Glad you mentioned it.
BBQ is their best now. Their best used to be Sour Cream & Clam. Humpty Dumpty chips in general have become much saltier than they used to be.
Gibbles are my favorite! But you forgot Martin’s which is my husband’s favorite.
Martin's was one of the 30.
That was a fun one! I want those Penn chips!
"Proprietary Alaskan Potato" ... one of the lesser known Captain Beefheart releases.
when i was young in the early 60's there were very few choices for bbq chips or any kind of chips. a very special treat for me was my aunt donna jean's hamburgers with guy's bbq chips and an rc cola that had to be shared. it's a bit different now.
Y’all need the Golden Flake Sweet Heat BBQ chips! They’re one of the best potato chips, hands down!
They were one of the 30.
Middleswarth for the win!
I grew up on Jones chips out of Mansfield Ohio. About 10 years ago they were forced to change from their hydrogenated fry oil and they haven't been the same since. Childhood nostalgia destroyed
I have not tried the BBQ chips, but Lillie Q’s Hot Vinegar chips are some of the best chips I have ever tried.
Omg those sound delicious!!!
I think UTZ from Hanover,PA is the BEST!!
ALDI sometimes has Tandoori BBQ chips. Delicious!
Didn't even speak a word about Grippo's...are we to call this typical New Englander aloofness??
Most unique experience out of all of these hands down. A true Cincinnati original.
Yes more please
Guy's bbq are my favorite ever! I'm from AR
Just wanna go on record as a lifelong fan that I'm very much into getting content out about regional variants, since after growing up around where ATK is centered, moving to Oregon has made some of the preferences harder to track down
Grippos! Unique and the best
I like BBQ and Salt & Vinegar chips. So Carolina BBQ chips are always a hit with me. Surprised they didn't have a sweet vinegary BBQ chip.
I love all of you. You do a good job 😜
Jay’s “Caribbean Style” bbq chips were the best ever! And of course they were discontinued!
Tim’s gettin subbed, I feel another east coast bias
As in Tim's Cascade? That brand was literally the example Kevin put in his initial tweet asking for brand suggestions. However it ultimately wasn't one of the 30 brands Kevin tried - he added constraints, including a delivery deadline that may have caused it to be excluded. BTW, Kevin is from Seattle - that's where is dad, fellow Hunger Pangs star Jeffrey and mom Catherine live (by way of Toronto and Hong Kong) and currently lives in Chicago.
@@sandrah7512 you’re awesome 👏🏽 thanks!
Cape Cod summer BBQ (closest to sauce, Hvy smoke) UTZ VooDoo (BBQ, vineger)Zapp's (Think I liked them, been a while)
Great Lakes plain kettle chips are delicious. Eat em with an Italian sub mmm
I'm not a BBQ chip guy, but Deep River are my go-to kettle chip
I have never been jealous of anyone on America's Test Kitchen before but man, would I love to be the one doing this taste test. YUM!!
You know you are making me hungry for chips!
The best potato chip in the USA is the Route 11 chip made in Virginia.
Agreed
Mikesell's Potato Chips, Dayton OH.
You can't really have a taste test without Conn's from Ohio. It is only produced in the central of Ohio but it is so good. Every time I go home, I buy as much as I can and bring them home
Well there goes my New Years resolution!! 🤷🏻👨🏻🍳
Great likes Michigan cherry bbq chips are way better than the regular ones!
Thank you so much for not cutting to the audience all the time in the annoying way you used to do!
I love the Hawaiian sweet maui onion potato chips.
Never tried any of those in the taste test but my favorite bbq chip is Humpty Dumpty
Yes! Humpty Dumpty BBQ chips are great!
Golden Flake Dill Pickle BBQ is the bomb-diggity. Regional to the Southeastern USA.
I saw the bag of my hometown brand, Guy's, and was hoping to hear what you thought of them. I love them, but they're very peppery and I could totally see how that might turn someone off.
I prefer Guy’s over Lays.
Love ya'll.
Try some Zapps chips...
From Kevin's article: "Any brands with national distribution were out. (Regrettably that meant excluding Zapp’s, the much-loved Louisiana chip company, which would likely have placed high in the rankings but could be easily found in stores coast to coast.)"
@@sandrah7512 Got it...Thanks for update
Zapps BBQ or Crawtators... hands down winner
Humpy Dumpy BBQ chips from Maine are the absolute best! Unfortunately I live in Canada - they are not sold here - so I have to depend on family & friends to shop for them whenever they go to Calais. The pandemic was hard, I missed those chips!! Ironically, they are made in Calgary, Canada but the company will not sell to folks here!
??? Old Dutch is available in Canada - including Calgary - unless the online inventories of the local RCSS and Co-op are fibbing.
Yes, Old Dutch are sold here and are very close in flavor, but the HD brand sold in Maine has MSG included I think where as Old Dutch does not. Both are my absolute favorite!
@@theresalandry3457 Ack! I'm mixing up my brands! I remember Humpty Dumpty potato chips when I was a kid (and Old Dutch), but they weren't the brands we usually bought. So it looks like there are HD snack food available in Canada but not a traditional style potato chip. HD BBQ Ringolos made from dehydrated potatoes (so kind of a fancy-shaped Pringle's?) do have MSG as do unavailable-to-Canada HD BBQ chips.
I saw the bag for my local favorite, Jay's, on the counter, but I was disappointed that it wasn't a "finalist" in the Bridget's tasting
Old Dutch with Top the Tator!
How you going to string me along and not even try the Grippos!
Aku sangat suka video ini sungguh klihatan lezat
My childhood favorite (I'm assuming
this is regional) was always Dirty Potato Chips
I wonder how Humpty Dumpty fared in the test? My sister used to go to Maine from Connecticut just to buy them. I used to prefer a spicier chip, but now that I'm older I prefer more of a honey barbecue flavor.
"My punk rock vote." 😂
Florida remains in the Union. We have regional goodies, too.
I'm an Old Dutch kind of guy, but then that's the only regional brand I have access to.
Ohio is well represented in this test already, but I wish they would've tried Mikesells out of Dayton. "The oldest potato chip company in the United States"
It's true that most of the responses Kevin got were from Ohio and Pennsylvania, but there were some constraints on what brands were included, including a shipping deadline.
@@sandrah7512 oh, that's completely understandable. Just wanted to shout-out a childhood favorite :-)
Yummm
Utz from Hanover Pa?
Deep river makes a good chip.
