Great video! I may have missed it but I think it would be good to point out that the Stratum lucidum only appears in the thick skin (palms of hands and bottoms of feet) and not on the thin skin (everywhere else). It is to make our hands and feet tougher by providing an additional layer of protection. Imagine holding a really warm cup of coffee in your hands... it's kind of relaxing. But touch that same warm cup of coffee to your neck and we've got a whole different situation.
You guys are amazing. I love everything about this channel: I like the way information is presented, I like the wording and the analogies, - everything. Just Awesome!
You are my favourite teacher on Khan Academy! Always so concise and easy to follow! I just spent 2 hours reviewing the integumentary system earlier for my test today and damn, it's amazing how great you've visually shown all that info into one concise video :) Looking forward to more vids from you!
You really need to explain the function of skin to all those people who constantly cut themselves for what seems like kicks if you ask me. I'm a paramedic. Apparently my opinion of the matter, my words about microbes being kept at bay by the barrier of skin that stops infections doesn't rate with them because the same people do this over and over and over. I must take these people to the hospital once a month. I'm really surprised they haven't actually gotten a terrible infection, but I really wouldn't play around with bacteria the way they do. I took Microbiology in Paramedic School. It was a most eye-opening experience.
So, do reptiles have a lucidum layer? or do they only have 4 layers? or does this not pertain to reptiles in the way I think it does... haha. I also thought this was very informative and a lot of fun! I did remember a song because of your intro, "Your epidermis is showing." I grew up very religious (am not anymore) but if you have ever listened to dc talk-colored people, it says all that in the beginning. I had not thought of that song in over 15 years. Anywho great slide, and now I will remember what is in the layers, Loved the zombie and coroners talk!
are only the cells in the stratum spinosum attached to each other by desmosomes or are the ones in other layers, like the stratum basale also bound by desmosomes?
+Cristina Beltran Agost I am struggling with the same thing! Have you found out if there are other differences between the cells by coincidence? it would be a big help!
you were confusing you should have said stratified squamous epithelium, rather than stacked simple squamous, regardless kudos to the work being done by you guys
I think snakes are disgusting. My friend has a snake and I see its skin lying in strange places. She actually SAVES it's moltings, which I think is too gnarly but oh well.
1:33 I believe this to be incorrect as the stratum basale has a single layer of cells. Please could you show me where this information cones from so I can reference this please 😃
Also, the lucidum layer is clear because the keratinocytes are filled with a clear protein called eledein, not because it no longer has a nucleus or organelles. This layer is only found on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. Its to prevent friction. Also, the nucleus and organelles do not give the skin its colour it is the melanocytes from the basale layer.
farah Ahad Merkel cells these are mechano receptors (sensory nerve ending of ) that transmit the fine touch sensation through the posterior colum and to sensory cortex.they also have secretory function

Thanks for this information 😊
The lucidum doesn’t actually make the skin “thicker”
A nice way to remember the layers:

I really like how you seperated the layers and illustrated terms within the layer.

The stratum basale is just a single layer of keratinocytes.

Thanks soo much, you made everything soo easy to remember 💕
Just wanted to say, thank you this was made very clear and was easy to understand.
The best teaching of skin.
Excellent "crash course" for understanding the Epidermis. I think the Granulosum layer is the most Intricate of all the layers.
Thank you sir
Absolutely incredible video! Thank you so much!!
Great video even years later, thank you
what an amazing teacher 😍🙆thank you.for sharing the love for skin sooooo impress and great full 😆
Thank you so much🤍
Amazing Video
I love the teaching fantastic
Good job!
thank you so much.. your the only teacher on UA-cam that actually did this well☺
Found this really useful and explained well👍
Incredible
Stratum corneum is absent in very low birth weight infants
your videos are really great !
thanks for the video helped me alot
Thats so cool! thank you for making a very easy to understand video.
Ok
thank you.
how a good explanation ! i hope i could be such good as this :(
Thanks
Love this! Thank you :)
Thank uuuu

How to integrate vit-D and Vit-A here in these layers ?

How much does retinoic acid thins the top layer?
are only the cells in the stratum spinosum attached to each other by desmosomes or are the ones in other layers, like the stratum basale also bound by desmosomes?
Top to bottom: Can, Larry, Go Swimming, Beside Dolphins (dermis)
the difference between the lucid and the corneum layer is the number of stacked cells then? Or I missunderstood?
Thanks a lot by the way
+Cristina Beltran Agost I am struggling with the same thing! Have you found out if there are other differences between the cells by coincidence? it would be a big help!
My professor informed us that horns are NOT made from keratin. They're bone. Antlers are made from keratin though.
Designed well for students
you were confusing you should have said stratified squamous epithelium, rather than stacked simple squamous, regardless kudos to the work being done by you guys
also he should've mentioned that the stratum lucidem is available only in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet
The very top layer is keratinised stratified squamous layer.
The cells become more cubodial as you go down.
I think snakes are disgusting. My friend has a snake and I see its skin lying in strange places. She actually SAVES it's moltings, which I think is too gnarly but oh well.
0.1 will wood reference???
Best best best😍

4:15 there are also desmosomes in the basal layer and also hemidesmosomes which attach the cells to the base membrane.
10:10 desquamation is the word to use instead of "Slough off"

@Spicy meatballs correct, but he said that the cell was clear because it had no organelles or nucleus, this is not correct.
Explained well..but ur Hindi explanation was good than dis....plzz make in hindi🙏🙏
What are merkel cells
Plzzzz Plz go in a bit more detail
