I love the how you give every whisky a chance, I enjoy how you all have your own opinion on a particular review, I really enjoy the insight you give us novices, I appreciate the effort yo go to each week, I just love watching S4D everytime a video appears. Cheers!
My whisky journey began with The Macallan and I really enjoyed my tour of the distillery and I really like the Classic Cut bottlings. But, when I can get SO many other really good sherried Whiskies for far less $$$$ (Abelour abudah comes to mind) I’m not tempted to buy one.
Nice video guys. Five things I like are 1) each of you have your unique tastes and opinions, 2) you’re informative and entertaining, 3) discord platform allows for daily interaction with other whisky enthusiasts, 4) engaging Patreon activities like secret Santa swap, Scotland trip, etc, and 5) Thursday live-streams.
Another enjoyable review S4D. 1) Production quality is great. Kudos for all the work in a great setup and post processing. 2) I'm still trying to figure out my palette, so it is great to hear your varying likes/dislikes. 3) You review scotch (vice yet another bourbon channel) 4) Active with your viewers as well as in other you tube channels 5) You seem to be having fun
I have been through about 4 bottles of these over the years and I love it! It is smooth delicious on ice or not its great! Now its hard to find at $120.
5 things I like about S4D 1. Good balance of obtainable and rare scotches reviewee 2. Regular content updates 3. 4 perspectives during review 4. Discord 5. Scotland 2020
Great review of a whisky I just bought ($114 here) and tried! I'm not a Macallan fanboy but I think you have to acknowledge that they recognize color (Shawn's point) is part of the experience, but it certainly wasn't "let's make it this color and exclude everything else that people love about whisky." I think of this as a tip of the hat to color. Lots of reviewers rag on anyone who adds color so take a moment to enjoy the beautiful NATURAL color as you drink this (actually quite nice) dram. Macallan doesn't have to add color to make it look rich; lots of distilleries do...
Five things I like about you guys... 1) Mark & Drew. Met you guys in Wichita last year. Enjoyed every second of it. 2) Andrew - Dr. Scotch is my favorite thing on the channel. I lean nerdy. Keep it coming. 3) Shawn - several of my best friends are chefs. (More than can be explained by random chance.) Respect! 4) Molly. 5) Your attitude as a group and that of the community you've built, especially on Discord.
Solid video. This one does sound pretty good. I don't buy a lot of Mac these days though - a lot of them just don't seem to meet the quality/value ratio I'm looking for. But I still think they are putting out good stuff. I like that there are 4 different opinions in each review; I like the 4 different personalities from you guys; I've really enjoyed watching older videos through today and seeing the journey; I like sharing that journey with you guys; I like that you were gracious enough to let me visit the bar, and I hope to do it again sometime in the future!
The 5 things I enjoy... 1.. Four different opinions on each scotch 2. Stick to scotch 3. Community building through discord 4. Doctor Scotch has been a welcome addition 5. The Weekly Lives with varied content
1 - you don’t take whisky tasting too seriously. 2 - you have a variation of palettes, so you don’t all like the exact same whiskies 3 - you mainly taste affordable whiskies that I can afford 4 - you obviously enjoy whisky 5 - you obviously have fun as a group
So, did you guys think this one might be better then edition 4? I have this unopened along with all the other editions unopened. I am waiting for 6 to come out to open them all at the same time. I have had several bottles of all the other editions. I have opened 3 bottles of edition 1 and 3 of edition 2. So far edition 2 is my favorite. Edition 3 shares second place with edition 2, which to me seemed to be very young. Edition 4 was excellent, but it did not match 2 . I am holding off on opening 5 until I have the whole set. Then I will open all at the same time. I do think that these being limited, they are worth trying at least once.
Glendronach 18 is almost half of the price here, about 75 to 80 euro's, for the price of this Macallan you have the Glendronach 21 Parliament here, easy!...….....Guess what I would buy?!
Making me regret not picking this one up ;) I'll keep my eyes peeled in Australia, though means more $$. It's funny that it's more on the colour, when the colour you're paying attention to is the purple of the box and label! :) So... i stayed until the end! 5 things I like about S4Ds: Andrew, Drew, Shawn, Mark, and your enthusiasm for the sweet sweet water of life! ;) Cheers, fellas!
Drew, Andrew, Molly, Shawn, and Mark. In order for color to be imparted into the barrel it has to spend at least some amount of time right? Also first fill will impart the most color. So often color does equate with age and fill. I think the higher price partly due to tariffs now, but alsoI saw that the Mac 18 is now well over $300 so prices for higher stuff seems to be going up and they are trying to keep the lower age stuff as close to their "normal" prices as not to tick off too many customers, IMHO. Mac prides itself on quality and that is why they charge higher premiums. Based upon your notes it sounds like they did succeeded as you listed quite a few flavors, and often those associated with American oak barrels.
Great points! I have to admit, I read your 5 things and skipped the "." (period), so I just read "in order" and thought, DAYMN, Molly took 3rd and I was last.... :-( Hahaha! ~Mark
I’ve collected all four editions but I’m cutting Macallan off here. It’s a $50 scotch that they hope we’ll pay $130 for. They’re showing contempt for us with the dumbest marketing gimmick ever. I’ll consider buying it at $50 after it’s discounted for sitting 2 years on the shelf. Thanks for the great reviews guys.
5 things I like: Drew trying to take the scotch whore title, Shawn and Andrew's palettes, Goofballs enjoying a fun hobby, honest opinions, and great attitudes during chats and on comments. Keep up the good work guys.
I went and bought a second bottle of this the day after opening the first. If the local Costco gets a pallet of this like they did of edition 4, I'll buy another. I agree that this isn't a knock your socks off dram. It is perfect for a regular sipper though except being a bit salty. Macallans is always overpriced from top to bottom of the range. I'd rate it at a strong 3, right in line with you guy's average. The five things I like is getting 4 different opinions that I know how to gauge, after sampling along with the reviews for a while now. 4 opinions plus a little factual trivia at the beginning makes 5.
I actually watched your review before purchasing but decided to go for it because I never bought a full bottle of MaCallan before just tasters and decided to pull the trigger and buy one for the collection. I couldn't be more disappointed as I just cracked the bottle and tasting now. I think by your rating system I would have to give it a two. This would have gotten a higher score, but for the price was truly disappointing. If this had been 60-70 dollars I'd say pick up a bottle, but as the price stands I can't recommend this, and quite frankly I'm surprised this passed muster.Id much rather have Tamdhu Cask Strength (any Batch #) or Aberlour A'bunadh at half the price or even if price was not a factor. I wanted to try a "Good McCallan and not just the 12 but for $125 I can find whisky that blows this away by a huge margin. I feel MaCallan should be ashamed of themselves and eventually are ruining their name for the normal drinkers. If I want to spend 1 to 4 K dollars I'm sure they make wonderful whiskies but their common stuff is.....well.....shite! Still in shock that I spent $125 for this mediocre dram! Very forgetful ........
Well this sucks! Can't disagree or argue your points or feelings, just hate to hear someone disappointed (as we've all been there)… Thanks for sharing your perceptions though as others will find value in them! ~Mark
Worth every penny. You’ll see this bottle triple the price in a few years the earlier editions all creeping up just think if u took 10k purchased 100 edition 1 you’d have 100k in whiskey at today’s price... crazy
I'm rather new to whisky and nerver had a Macallan yet. And frankly, I'm not in a hurry to try one, since there's a lot of other producers out there, which I did not have yet either, and who are not going to make me pay through my nose. I'm getting the impression that Macallan is more a whisky for investors, than it is for drinkers.
The only "Quercus alba only" Edition is a pass for me. I can get a lot of single cask IBs in that price range . BUT if I change my mind, whiskybase says there are 260,000 Mac Ed 5s out there lol. Cheers fellas!
1. 4 differing opinions, 2.scoring system that uses the bottom half of the scale. 3.nicknames: scotch whore, wheelhouse, burnt toast. 4.Dad jokes 5. No snob vibes.......there’s my 5. Oh, and bonus point for improving my bar at home.
Just now doing a heads up side by side comparison with Glendronach 18 that I get a little less cost than the Mac5 and not only is there no comparison I would have to rate the Gl 18 500% better in every area than this lackluster MaCallan Edition 5 . The Mac5 has very little nose and taste while the GL18 explosions in the nosing and ion your palate! I'm actually going to try to return this for a store credit. Maybe it's abad bottle.
Hi Bruce. Sure this is a solid dram that many will appreciate (in other words it's not eclectic or something that is specialized to the point of being outside the mainstream). It has somewhat of special-ness to it being a limited release. My only hang-ups are it's a NAS (no age statement) and Macs tend to be over priced a bit, of course I say that and I have 2 of these stashed away, so it goes to show I'm not too hung up... 😉 Hope this helped, ~Mark

Great job, but I have to agree with it being overpriced and a pass for me. Really surprised they raised the cost of the classic cut, its a $80 bottle at best for me.
