Lombards pushed Eastern Romans to the southern peninsula in in 750 CE. Saracens from Sicily, Andalusia (Iberia) and Crete became mercenary in the feuds between Lombard and Eastern Romans in 9-10th century. in 11th century the feud attracting Norman mercenary, descendant of Vikings who excel in horsemanship and seafaring. Fun fact: Robert Guiscard once had to abandon his campaign because his campsite was infested with tarantulas.
Completely reasonable
By the way modern Italians are a mixture of: Romans + Germanic Tribes (Lombards, Ostrogoths, heruli and Normans).
And 20-40% Greek blood of course don't forget it , especially in the region of Magna Grecia
And thus, Justinian reconquests were completely destroyed...

Italian Renaissance began a bit later (13th century), when a lot of greek erudites fled the slow collapse of Byzantium (and the ambiant spirit of religious strife) and went to central Italy.
Those conflict were fatal for the Eastern Roman empire, not only because they lost southern italy but they distracted them for the real thread coming in the east by the Seljuk Turks. They must be the reason for such luck of preparation in eastern anatolia.
Yes
Norwegian+Frenchman=Norman and Roman+Greek=Byzantine
Yeah, thats, it.
Only Roman......in the Byzantine period the Greeks call themselves Romans and not Greeks
@@Geoma1999 but was still Greeks , the name Greek in that period they didn't use it because they think it's opposite with the religion of Christianity

Great movie clips but it was very difficult to read and learn while i was on the treadmill. So now i know as much as i knew when i started
French : gualish (celtic) + roman (latin) +frankish (germanic)
Norman: nordic (germanic) + french
After Rollo failed to capture Paris (defended by Odo of Paris), he agreed to become duke of normandy. Then his sons and grandsons became assimilated as frenchmen and christians
WRONG. Norman were ONLY germanic
Franks were only germanic as well. Get your facts straight
Catholic Racialist nope. The descendants of franks intermarried the gaulo-roman upper class. The descendants of normans intermarried the frankish nobilities. Pls read more books before writing a comment
@@tekkentekkentekken LOL YOU JUST said what I said in my comment and then you tell me to go read a history book? Are you stupid?
You just said that the Franks and Normans were racially PURE germanic and they mixed with the Gallo-romans
@@tekkentekkentekken Get a brain
@@catholicracialist776 can u read or not? Once the franks and normans settled in Gaul, especially in present-day northern france, their upper classes intermarried the local elites to consolidate their power.

The Germans burned these Vikings
Seriously! Where did you find all these greek lines speaking about rome etc. Greeks never did a single movie about their roman past

Next norman conquest sicily.
Where are all the scenes from? A movie or a documentary or? :)
I think it's a mix of stuff. I recognize a few scenes here and there from various films, maybe a couple of History Channel docs.
Can we just appreciate the total war warhammer theme.
Could you maybe put the names of the series/movies used in the video? I would love to see some series or movies about Normans
Bruh this is total war war hammer theme love it

Use Anno Domini for your year indication . And call the Eastern Romans , Byzantines.
But the BGM is too warhammer.
what the name of the footage you use,
💖👍❤
From what movies are the scenes?
Normans speak in modern french.
Ciuis Iratنs
At this time Normans spoke in local variant of Old french (you may have a read at the published original version of the "song of Roland" to have a good exemple of a text written in Old "Anglo-Norman" dialect of Old french).
By the way, lombard of this time were also speaking in old variant of northern italian. Longobard germanic language was long lost, as the ruling germanic minority long ago integrated and disappeared into the vast majority of romance speakers (and, in the case of Longobards were brutally removed from power).

I knew it. It is why i wrote "modern french" and not just "french".
Ciuis Iratنs i suppose then it's just for spectator's ease in apprehending a kind of local "taste". I personnaly appreciate it.
Furthermore, actors able to play fluently in old french, old italian and byzantine greek are not that numerous - Exception here, a guy in the show "Vikings" presenting Rollo a roman geographic map of Western Europe and mediterranean.
What about viliking?

These ancient Roman uniforms are not authentic in this age.
Eastern Roman Empire at the time was mostly consisted of Greeks. Thus it was a hellenic christian style empire. The roman culture had faded away in the East.
@Tom , the whole eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea would use and understand Greek at the time. So , yes , barbarians did speak Greek.
@erick meyer you stupid, biased, SOAB . People in Germany have more holidays, work for less hours , get paid far better than Greeks do. Obviously you have never been to Greece and the last book you read was your tv manual.Shut up , please..
Not completely but its losing ground very quickly. Latins still had some influence Even in the reign of Manuel 1, Latins had some influence. In 1182, most of the Latins in Constantinople were killed and the survivors fled to the West

It's a Shame that most books don't mention the papacy leading conflict..I tough they are religios group tsk tsk
what a way to make a living. a little to much testosterone under the ol' bonnet buddy.
You do not just invite another regional power to take care of your business for you. They will not want to give up the privileges you gave them... Just like COVID regulations. Governments do not just give up the powers that they got.
First it was the pope who allowed the normans south dude. Second they fought arabs not eastern romans. You think the pope would have allowed normans go to southern Italy if there were already eastern romans who were christians?
Furthermore it's a little cringey heard them talk in modern french the normans didn't speak french nor anyone in italy spoke italian at that time.
The Normans didn't speak any French? Then what did William the Conquerer bring to England with him that caused a stratification of languages between French for the aristocrats/nobles and Old German/Anglo-Saxon for the rank and file English?
Umm...nope mate they also fought against the Byzantines they fought against the Arabs when Robert Guiscard tried to invade Sicily, they even fought against the pope and defeated the guy capturing him and forcing him to recognize the Hautevilles as counts of southern Italy, you may say its not true but read the life of Robert Guiscard and also the book of Roger, and any books concerning the conquest of southern Italy, Normans were opportunists just as their Norse ancestors
@@marloyorkrodriguez9975 I don't disagree with you, however, please go back and re-read my question. Did they speak French???
@@isismccain915 I guess I 'm going to ask Will :). I 'm sorry I always thought they spoke a germanic language different from the french spoken nowadays.
Don't ignore the division between Catholic and Orthodox Christians; the Normans were Catholics and the Eastern Romans, Orthodox. Considering that less than 200 years after the conquest of Eastern Roman Italy the Crusaders would sack Constantinople, it is not far-fetched at all to think the Pope would send troops against Orthodox Romans.
Normans = 100% germanic D-N-A and Nordic face structure.
0% Celt or roman. They weren't native French
