Can you name a "dumb" rule?
Pick any number between 1 and 25
The goalie interference rule
goalie interference and kicking motions ! (more 'confusing' than 'dumb')
offside review. Takes 5min to make a call. If you can’t decide if the goal is in or not after 3min. The initial call should stay.
Lou doesn't allow players to have facial hair unless it's the playoffs
The dumbest number cult is people getting mad at JJ Watt for wearing #99 on the ice. Dude wore the number his entire NFL career so who cares if he uses his number for beer leauge.
Yeah, if anyone else had done that then maybe I get how it could be seen as taking the piss, but for JJ Watt it makes sense.
I'd like to see someone talk about it to his face
99 is a very specific number in the beer league. Take me for instance, I started to wear the double 9 once I really started to suck. You have to be the worst player on your squad to wear 99… or be JJ Watt.
Literally nobody with half a brain cares about that lol
@@blakebarone1809 What?
There is also a rule that says you can't wear #99, because the number is retired. Apparently the guy was really good at hockey.
It used to be, teams shared a single penalty box. Even after a fight. Two minute penalties were served for the full two minutes. No matter how many goals were scored on the power play. Freezing the puck against the boards got a stoppage in play and a face off. There used to be a time when there was no center ice line. With the center line came into NHL hockey, the pass over two lines was considered as being offside. Teams disapproved of goalie masks, because they felt the mask partially blocked the goalies view of pucks, at their feet. Referees would drop the puck at face offs whenever they felt the time was right. So face offs went off quickly.
jeez so basically the ref could just say “it’s been a while. let’s blow a whistle!”
The Canadiens of the 50's were so good on the power play it forced the NHL to change the rule on serving the full 2 minutes.
IMO the player should have to sit the full 2 minutes if the Power Play team scores teams play 5-on-5 but that player cant be put in till after the 2 minutes are finished
@@princechickenwings2746 Nice idea- but in reality it would be more than a 2 minute penalty- as you would need to wait for a stoppage in play to get him out.
How are you supposed to fight with a fish bowl or mask
The late Gino Odjick, when he first started in the NHL for the Vancouver Canucks, briefly wore number 66 before switching to his familiar 29
Scotty Bowman, the greatest hockey coach of all time, also didn't like the number 13. He refused to stay in any room on the 13th floor of a hotel, and if the hotel's floor numbers skipped 13 to accommodate people like him, he would refuse to stay on the 14th floor, because that was really the 13th floor. And after all of that, he would add the digits of his room number, and if they added to 13, he would request a different room.
Upon hearing how much he hated that number, one reporter asked why one of his players at the time, Slava Kozlov, wore number 13. Bowman just shrugged and said, "It works for him". One can be superstitious, and even extremely superstitious, without being a jerk about it.
Barzal wears #13, does that mean Lou hates his star player 😳 Wonder how was Barzy was able to get away with it 🤔
Probably falls under the "star player" and he was wearing it before I was his boss exception. He let jagr and a few other stars rock high numbers on the devils back in the day
@@somedudenamedryan he also made a Kevin Weekes change his number in pretty sure
The stuff about Lou isn’t really NHL rules though. These are specific rules for the specific team he GMs. The NHL didn’t forcing Hosang to change his number. Also, Hosang’s number change didn’t start some spiral that saw him eventually play in Russia. Despite his immense talent, he never made a consistent impact in games. He wasn’t worth keeping around. He also “famously” was sent packing by Garth Snow back to either juniors or the AHL after showing up late to training camp.
I hadn't heard anything about Desjardins being forced to change his number. During training camp there are a lot of players and the less established players are often given high numbers (in the Sharks system, can't speak about other teams). After they're established a bit in their career as an NHLer they often change to a lower number.
From a San Jose Hockey Now article with the title "30 Sharks: Why Did Andrew Desjardins Wear No. 69?":
“I actually didn’t pick that number,” admitted the former San Jose Sharks player. “It was given to me as a camp number. I eventually made [the Sharks] but as a young guy, I wasn’t able to change numbers and I played a few years with that number. Then, when I was able to change numbers, I changed it to 10.”
Imagine playing in your first NHL game and the number they hand you is 69 lmao
That bardown 100-roll stick is always a treat to see, those guys are always entertaining
Ho-Sang continued to play for the Islanders after he changed his number to 26. I think Ho-Sang having 2 points in 10 games in his third NHL season had more to do with the Islanders moving on than any scuffle about his jersey number.
Ho-sang's jersey number speaks volume to his questionable character. Yes he did play 10 games but that was also the season Lou took over. Where he would never play in the NHL again
@@RobTalksHockey Reasonable minds can differ on this for sure. Ultimately, after 225 AHL games over 6 years, he was a .533 point-per-game player in the minors. Even after he went to the Marlies and no longer had Lou's rules to worry about, he never cracked the NHL lineup. There are 32 teams in the league and all of them passed on Ho-Sang. I don't think there is anyone who has a worse reputation in the league than Tony DeAngelo (deservedly so), but he has been signed twice because he produces. I am not happy about this, because we need more Ho-Sangs in the league and less DeAngelos. Luckily, he strikes me as the kind of guy that does not need hockey to be happy.
Agreed!
Not a fan of Lou’s mishandling here.
Hockey’s changed a bunch since the Devils dominated with Lou’s rules. Toronto gained their stride post-LL and the NYI are a scoring ‘black hole’, mostly winning when they are from the skills a goalie that was drafted by Garth Snow.
Can’t say I saw any character issues in Ho-Sang beyond not always being committed to defense, and there’s a player or three on just about every roster doing the same thing.
That whole episode with NYI looks “rife with shenanigans” that look worse on a hockey exec/mgmt than a kid in their early 20’s.
@@stolendrones I am not sure what you're referring to by Lou's mishandling here.
"Toronto gained their stride post-LL and the NYI are a scoring ‘black hole’": worth noting that the Leafs have not won a single playoff series since Lou left and the Islanders have gone to two conference finals, in one instance losing 0-1 in game 7 to the eventual cup winners.
"mostly winning when they are from the skills a goalie that was drafted by Garth Snow": Sorokin has not been the starting goaltender until last year, when they did not make the playoffs. LL joined the Islanders in 2018. Before Sorokin, the Islanders certainly did have strong goaltending, but it came from Lehner (signed as a FA by LL, 2018-19 Vezina finalist) and then Varlamov (signed as a FA by LL, backstopped to two conference finals). Since LL, the post-season the success (other than the first round of 20-21) has been backstopped by LL FA signings, not Sorokin.
"Can’t say I saw any character issues in Ho-Sang beyond not always being committed to defense": I am not sure how closely you followed Ho-Sang's years when Garth Snow was still the GM, but he was quoted as saying "It's time to grow up" after sending him home on the first day of training camp.
I am not Lou's biggest fan or greatest defender, but you take the good (two conference final runs) with the bad (losing a talented high-draft-pick) and so far the good has outweighed the bad.
Lamoriello sounds like he is stuck in the days of the Original 6 era, where no player wore a jersey number higher than 30. During the first decade of the expansion era, players and goalies started wearing jersey numbers between 31 and 40, like Tony Esposito wearing 35 for Chicago during the 1970s. Then, in 1979, Wayne Gretzky would change the jersey number landscape by wearing the highest number possible, which is 99. Since then, no one has worn number 99 in the NHL, though Connor McDavid, and Kirill Kaprizov, are currently wearing the next highest jersey number with 97 (unless there are full time NHLers currently wearing 98).
Bedard wears #98 in the WHL, maybe next year.
He also do not want the players to have facial hair. He’s so stuck in his generation.
Sergachev wears 98 for Tampa
@@atouze Forgot about him.
Puljujärvi is also 98
Lou is not someone i would work hard for, if he was my boss. In fact, i would call in sick whenever i could and use the time to apply for other jobs. His style is from the past.
When I think #13, I think of Pavel Datsyuk
Hell yeah. Or Slava Kozlov. 👍
Lou wouldn’t let Bedard wear 98 he’d prob make him wear 28
Regarding the Ho-Sang stuff, that was one of the dumbest controversies out there. Lemieux never played for the Islanders. Gretzky wore #9 for Gordie Howe until someone on the Oilers already had it. Nobody ever saw that as disrespect from him (or anyone else who wore #9 for the same reason)
Similarly, Lebron has worn #23 without controversy.
People are going to hate on this, but I can't help but feel that Ho-Sang's race played a factor into the controversy of him choosing that number. As mentioned, the Brodie thing didn't catch nearly the attention. "Attitude" is an oft-cited reason as to why a non-white player didn't mix in well with the team. It's a pretty suspicious word.
Brodie was likely assigned #66... as for Ho-Sang, his older Instagram posts show what kinda guy he is. Posting pics of random girls asses with a sexual caption... that's not NHL Player Behavior. Same with Evander Kane posting pics of himself with money stacks. These aren't Rock Stars or Rappers. They are NHL Players. Also #9, #23 are common numbers. We are talking about #66. Mario Lemieux who was quite possibly, better than Gretzky. It's not a coincidence that almost all NHL Players do not wear that number.
.... i guess hockey is different than other sports. Guaranteed when Sid retires no one even touches #87 as well as #97 when McDavid retires.
@@AlphaZaius67 Wtf? Why is Evander Kane in this conversation? You trying to prove this isn't racism by mentioning another black guy with attitude problems? And you picked the dumbest things about Evander Kane to nit pick. Dude is accused of far worse, actually criminal behavior. And you're upset that he posted pictures of money, lol
Move along, sir.
Awesome videos man. Thanks for the hard work! And absolutely loved the habs video !!
I love the full shield, which is mandatory in NCAA hockey, because it prevents gory facial injuries that are so easily avoidable. But please don't call it a fishbowl, that is such an annoying term for it.
i get why they put the rule in, i was there before/when they did it. but the shooting the puck over glass = automatic penalty is just stupid these days. no one does it on purpose anymore so its just a dumb (and one of the few) penalties the refs HAVE to call..
Keep the rule - but lower the glass on the sides of the rinks. Nothing more boring than guys whipping pucks down the ice by using the 10 foot high side glass. Low glass will allow the defender to possibly stop the puck and keep the pressure on.
Imagine the headache if Lou was the GM in Montreal
No 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 16, 18, 19, 23, 29, 33. And 13 is off-limits to him. Would called-up players have to share numbers with someone?
That’s why he won’t go there 😂
I love how the offensive defenseman clips were Cale Makar
Lou only wanting players to wear numbers 1-30, while working for a team that has 6 of those numbers retired. 🤷♂
All it would take is for someone like Connor bereaved to REFUSE to wear a visor and just wear a cage or fishbowl and then they may realize how stupid that rule is
2:54 * Drew Miller took a skate to the face and played 82 games that season. 💪
loooooool the nathan fielder reference
;)
your double deflection made me wonder if there was ever a triple deflection. If so, that would mean the initial shooter wouldnt get an assist.
Lou also does not allow facial hair on any of his players EXECPT in the Playoffs
First the DMV, now the NHL? Why's everyone hate the #69 :(
Love the 007 Goldeneye background music
I don't know if anyone will see this but, one of my teachers used to teach in Canada and taught Connor McDavid. She said he was putting effort into his work and constantly engaged, and was smart. On the other hand, Josh Ho-Sang, she believed was even more skilled than McDavid, put little to no effort into his school work. He would turn up late to school and hockey practice thinking, I'm going to make the team anyway. Look how different the two players are now. I'm pretty sure he was also the player who injured Zac Bell @alwayshockey. So take from this what you will.
2:05 elite Danny Dekeyser goal
That's about the only time you're gonna see "elite" and "Danny DeKeyser" mentioned in the same sentence.
Yanick Dupre wore No. 66 while with the Flyers in 1991. Although, this was while Lemieux was still playing. Dupre sadly died at age 24 from lukemia.
Coincidence or Karma?.. and I'm not saying because of Lemieux. He had his share of Health Issues. I think 66 is cursed.
It's a good thing Lou has never been the GM of the Habs, numbers 1,2,4,7,9,10,12,16,18,19,23 and 29 are retired (33 also but that falls outside of Lou's range) basically he wouldn't have enough numbers to ice a full team loll
There are many subtle things that happen in a hockey game that look normal to a casual fan but to a hockey player they know exactly what the player was doing, like interference or steering the puck in the net purposefully
I don’t know much about hockey but I do know that once you get a team to game 7 that mentality is different .
Love the 007 goldeneye soundtrack in the backround😂
Not so much a dumb rule as dumb situations the NHL thought needed to be addressed in the rule book. For instance the rules specify what happens if a team decides not to participate in the shootout after OT. Nobody at the rules meeting seems to have asked "do you really think this is going to be a problem?"
Kinda funny how in the NBA so many guys have worn 23 because of Jordan and nobody has an issue with it, but in the NHL that is somehow disrespectful.
What song is the sound bed from 1:02 to 1:59
Golden eye 🔥
Wearing a full facial protection would only lead to more bad things.
Now players do have to worry about their face when going into crowded areas and so on, so they still have some sense of self-preservation instinct left. With a fishbowl, you lose it. You feel more immortal. You tackle opponents with worse technique, you go head first into scrums and all that kind of stuff. This would lead to sticks flying left and right, hitting players in throat and neck areas, and even shots would hit those areas more often. Concussions would increase because why worry about your face? It is protected! But you still hit your head with less worry about consequences.
Yeah for sure, I get that point. But it's also an assumption that would have to be experimented with. Implementing new rules would be the start
changing to a fishbowl for safety doesn’t change the rules of the game. no idiot is ab to start playing dirty just bc another players nose is finally covered. there’s plenty of leagues that wear full cages and you don’t hear ab any outlandish behavior
@@Aj-sn1dp But they're not the NHL.
@@Aj-sn1dp The thing is, you do not do it knowingly. You just do it because you have less fear about your own health. There are studies about this and if you just google, you'll find it. Best one was about rugby where addins a soft helmet made players tackle with worse technique and making themselves and opponents more prone to injuries.
I think it's bullshit that it's frowned upon to wear 66 but it's fine to wear 88. Lindros was just as good as any superstar in NHL history. But, because he was a Flyer, the NHL didn't care. More bias against the Flyers.
At 1:35 don't use graphs or diagrams if you can't use them properly. The point of this kind of graph is to visualize the numbers and the difference between them, which is why the y-axis must always start at 0. The way it is used here seems as if Vegas has something like 8-fold the amount of blocks compared to St. Louis, even though they have less than 3 times the amount of blocks.
Thank you.
I like to zoom in for perspective. And I base it off the min and max. I do understand what you’re saying though, I’ll do both in the future thanks for the feedback 👌🏼
With the need for blocking shots exponentially increasing in the NHL, each year... Wouldn't you say it's time to bring back goalies... Or am i just too old fashion for the game now a days..
I wanna see Jim Nill bring Ho-Sang to Dallas
You have to be a right stud to rock #69 all the way to the pros
1:53 those top 3 forwards were not the forwards I would have had in mind for blocked shots lol
Bonino yes Pettersson and Matthews nope
Agreed lol
6:46 Its the unlucky number
How does Ho-Sang never play again because of a number? No team wanted him? Really?
He was signed to a PTO with the Leafs last season but didn't make the team, that's pretty much the last bit of NHL action he got
Maybe if Ho-Sang knew how to set his alarm clock maybe he’d still be in the league…….
7:23 nice
Why would the binnington goal not get waived off? He's getting his crease taken away. That should be an obvious no goal to anyone who watches hockey
If I had to wear the ‘fish bowl’ it’s not the danger to me if someone grabs it, It’s more of a danger to the dickhead who grabs it! He a gonna wish he was a cheerleader in the stands!😂🥊🥊
13 is considered bad luck. It’s not really that ridiculous in the meaning that lots of people don’t like the number.
Not being allowed to wear 0 or 00 is a stupid rule. Absolutely stupid rule.
69 is bad, but 55 is ok? I guess Kronwall was good at smashing people with his back end, so...
For someone who says they should worry about the number, he sure worries about the numbers a lot
13 is just unlucky. Look at almost all buildings that have more than 15 stories. There’s no 13 in the elevator.
Lou won’t let players have beards too no?
1:27 this chart is not very good. Why is the origin 500 and not 0?
Min and max
But it makes the bar for 600 blocked shots less than a tenth of the height of the bar for 1400
I never got why player all of the sudden go to the bench if there helmet gets taken off.... THANKS TOREY KRUG!!!!
If it's really all about the crest on the front and not the number/name on the back as Lou said, then why put so much effort and energy on what number your players should and shouldn't have? Lous sayings and his doings completely contradict each other.
Goalie crossing center line is pretty dumb, should be allowed. I miss goalie fights, and want another Roy skating it up ice again
Drew miller took a skate to the face!
Uhm many of these things are not NHLrules, its a GM rule or so on. The number 69 is not a rule, its just a tradition to not wear it but you are allowed to. The NHL allows for numbers between 1 and 98, used to be 99 but it was retired and is the only jersey number retired for the entire league.
13 is a unlucky number the old man is prob superstitious
My Jersey number is 69. Lol. 🤣
Not dumb, but confusing rule, goalie interference
Lou doesn't allow long hair or facial hair on his team
Nicholls wears nr 66 in the last clip about 69 🤷♂️
Jacques Martin had the same rule about the numbers being too high. All players on the Sens in the early 2000s had to be under 40. Alexander Daigle had to change his 91 to 9. That was just one example. So…YOUR GOD FATHER OF HOCKEY did not invent that rule.
Title is "dumbest rules" of hockey and you spent half the video talking about jersey numbers and another quarter of the video talking about blocking shots.
Lmao. That's true, but it's because I thought it would be fun to go more in-depth, why the rule exists and or is confusing
Come on Rob, I like your videos but you are slipping. You named this NHL rules and talked about Lou's personal rules. Those aren't NHL rules. Also, you forgot no facial hair on Lou's team
bro 13 isnt just unlucky.... its evil.
When the F* did it become disrespect to wear the number of a great player? That is the largest amount of trash I have ever heard. Gretzky wore 99 because the number he wanted--his idol, Gordie Howe #9--was worn by another player. It's ridiculous to think that generations of kids are deprived of the number of their favorite player. Add to that the absurdity of retired numbers (surely you can hang a shirt from the rafters without also saying "no one can wear that nunmber again!) and you get a ridiculous situation.
You are just wearing the number of the player you loved. Generations of kids did it before you.
I guess Messi wearing number 10 is showing disrespect to Pele, Maradona, and about 100 other great players who wore number 10. Hockey can be downright silly about things.
April 15th, when the whole of MLB wears #42
Shame tho.. 69 looks esthetically damn good on a jersey!
The Islanders will never win any cups worrying about facial hair or having a number rule. The GM needs to go.
i used to race bikes years ago and like a racer once said to his dad i was of the same thoughts, i wanted 88 but it was taken so i chose 69 so that if i crashed my dad knew it was me upside down or right want up.
people read too much into the number thinking its just sexual and it just isnt why the majority have that number, my son is 8 he plays ice hockey he has 33 or 69, 33 because he is a big buff fan and hits like a truck even at 8 as he is huge, and 69 for my racing number from my bike and his love for Nickey Hayden 69 who passed away a few years ago.
people are too quick to jump on why people have a number or something without knowing the facts or even asking in the first place
Ashlynn brooke
Lou’s facial hair rule is really dumb. Just like the Yanks it makes no sense.
Lou was in the league 10 years too long. What a nightmare that would have been having him as your G.M.
He won GM of the year two years ago and three years ago.
Hey rob, I suggest that you get rid of the 20 second outro, it will bring up the average watch time and help grow your channel
but then the end of his content will be covered by suggestions
Pavel Bure wanted 69 but nucks mgmt said no! 96 it is…
The prism get rid of it
Ho-Sang was probably against wokeness too. Those guys tend to be pushed around.
Lou needs to go.
The league should become a democracy in which the commissioner is voted in by the players
It already is. The commissioner is voted on by the owners.
Montreal canadiyans?
Doesn't Jordan dumais wear 69
Why is the "fishbowl" helmet not allowed in the NHL....but fully allowed in European hockey leagues?
Heck, some even encourage it to be used. That is why junior players wear them. It makes your face fully protected from pucks, sticks, and elbows etc.
BTW they look great IMO.
Probably something to do with the NHL promoting hockey violence, given how leniently they punish career-ending tackles etc.
@@tt128556 Yeah that is an sad theory that I agree with could very much be the truth!
Players wearing the full face protection will essentially be goalies. The NHL don't need that. You're required to wear full face protection for USA Hockey while under 18. Over 18 you can go with a visor and a waiver. NHL requires all players entering the league to wear a visor. There are few players grandfathered in without visors on.
@@oscarwinner2034 But they are safer. And if players want to wear them, I believe they should be allowed!
@@WarioSaysSo I agree. But it's the rule. I see tons of adults playing rec league without full face protection. Talk about morons! Teeth don't grow back.
Adding the blue line, it caused a lot of problems, including forcing offside refues and offsides challenges that takes a long time
#13 is an unlucky number in many cultures It's why many hotels skip that number on their floors on the elevator and room numbers
Binnington explained: Stay out of the crease.
Dumbest rules in nhl history... A back story of 2 rules and a few players....Click bait. I wanted some funky rules, not a wasted 10 minutes.
i agree with lou, Ho-sang shouldve changed his number ... not because its "high" but because he wore 66..... a number that should be retired league round
Well it’s not retired league wide
@@zachhirschler .... I know...... that's why I said it SHOULD be retired
@@itsa-itsagames then you can’t get upset with someone wearing a number that’s not retired league wide
If you do Lemieux, you're opening the dialogue for Orr and Howe. Retiring 99 league wide was a mistake, why repeat it?
Title should say Lou's lame rules.
Cool video..I love the NHL Hockey ways but some Rules are truly messed up...👏👏👏🏒💨 🥅 SCORES!!! lol
Thanks dude!
the number rule that lou has i disagree that they think about themselves. numbers mean a lot to players
That was his point though. His thought process is that the only thing players should find important is team success. He figured a player caring about their number is selfish
His no facial hair rule is dumb
Lou is also known to have his players be clean shaven. Horvat and Tavares are good examples of this. Tavares instantly grew a beard in Toronto, Horvat had the scruff until he landed on Long Island.
Austin matthews most blocked shots by forwards this season just showing how he’s changed his game to be a team player, plays all sides of the ice
Definitely. You love to see it
Like 34!
Auston
Matthews is tied with Nick Bonino at 79.
hes gonna look good in another teams jersey after this year
I mean everyone knows 13 is allegedly a bad luck number so I can see why Lou didn’t like the number 13. There are buildings that either skip the 13th floor and go 12 14 15 or just make the 13th floor like a storage floor. So I get it. It’s common to think that of that number
And then there's asshole like me just born of a friday the 13th. Lou would probably trade me immediately if I were a player and on any team he started working for.
11 must be the lucky number
ua-cam.com/video/KOO5S4vxi0o/v-deo.html
Ironically, that's why I wore the number. Our team's had the numbers already on jerseys from 1 -20, and no one wanted to wear 13...so being the one that always ha to be different, I did. lol
Lou logic is so utterly idiotic. Is he gonna pay everyone equally too?
Its about the team....really? LOU MY LINEMATE IS MAKING 5 MILLION MORE THAN ME AND I CANT WEAR NUMBER 90?
