That happens allot more then you think actually. In the US at least if you buy a car from a police auction. You can bring it to your local police department next business day with you auction paperwork, and they'll have the dogs go through it for free just to make sure. My wife worked in law enforcement and that happened to someone. They brought the dog threw it and turns out the cops missed like 3 kilos of coke
It would be legal to keep, but youd have to explain it to the IRS privately with proof. You dont want law enforcement to find out, otherwise, they will make a case for seizure saying its evidence.

Didn't find a thing, just go back in their cars and left him there. Door panels were off, front and rear seats were taken out, headliner pulled down, spare tire cut open. His father tired to pursue the issue but the judge said, "probable cause" and they couldn't go after the ex because the cops shielded her.
