I love this clip. Darn shame that Crosby's legacy is passing somewhat with the mists of time. He dominated popular culture (motion pictures, records, radio, personal appearances), inspired generations of crooners, and was the most popular American entertainer through World War II. He was a giant with a keen, intelligent mind and underrated acting ability, too. He stole every "Road" picture from Hope, as well as "Robin and the Seven Hoods" from the Rat Pack. Also love him in "The Country Girl" with Princess Grace. And, after the war, he did some of his best recording for Decca. He matters.
What goes round comes around! When some radio executive gets the power to play some of Bing's songs in the future. Boom!! Bing and romance WILL return!
It saddens me that all the greats like Sinatra, Crosby, Dean, Nat Cole, Satchmo, Como, etc etc, have never been replaced. We’ll never see their like again.
@@jacobmcelvogue6797 lol good one his first wife was an alcoholic who drank herself to death, only Gary really had a problem with him and wrote his book to make a fast buck.
45 years ago. We are so blessed to have this glimpse into our past. Bing born in May 1903, Bing was gone 22 months later. Phil June 1904. We got to keep him until 1995. Bob hope was born in May of 1903 as well.
I remember Phil singing "Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine" on this show. I saw it when it originally aired and never forgot him doing that number.
I love phil I love him and one of the things that makes me love him is he was fearless completely fearless. To sing with Bing. They were best friends of course but to put the mic up and sing along with Bing took some stout.
I remember the "Dinah" show, it ran an hour. I'd sure love to see the whole hour on THIS one! Also would've loved to hear a lot more of Phil Harris, he was great as well. For a guy whose schtick was a rep as a drunk, Harris outlived both Bing & Dinah. He made it to 91, to Bing's 74 & Dinah's 77.
Hello. Dinah's syndicated talk show seen here was called "Dinah!" when it debuted in 1974 and by 1980 it was called "Dinah & Friends." It was actually a 90 minute show but some stations aired a 60 minute version.
Vinyl records!?! Snap, crackle, pop! I remember when I first heard a CD and how tinny the sound was. How flat. Without those cracks, snaples, and pops--it wasn't r a record. And those CDs came out first i think by 1982 and a CD is simply a bunch of ones and zeroes, if I'm not mistaken. And now I know record stores that just throw out hundreds of old vinyl records, cause no one wants them. Believe it or no, I still have two vinyl records of "My Fair Lady" and Nat King Cole, 'Unforgettable."
The questions are a bit "loaded", in that the records used are, in some instances, the relatively obscure remakes. When Bing credits Eddie Lang on guitar, for instance, he doesn't realize that the record used was recorded several years after Lang's death! But still a fun clip, and illustrates both Bing's major role in the culture of the era, as well as his innate modesty regarding his life's work. Imagine having recorded so many songs that you can't even remember some of them!
There's one other song they forgot to jog Bing's head: Dinah! That was another signature hit he did, along with the Mills Brothers recorded in 1932, 1953, and live performance with the original three brothers in 1977, before he died.
Yeah, though I don't know that using the originals would've helped Bing any, seeing as he didn't even get "White Christmas." I guess we can cut them some slack, because they didn't have several discographies at their fingertips like I do today (the wonders of modern technology). On the other hand, in a way I have even less of a clue about what was on the flip side of anything, since all my Bing music is on CD!
The sad thing about this clip is even though Bing looks healthy and vibrant in this clip he would die from a massive heart attack less than 2 years later.
Bing recorded hundreds of song over some 40 years so how could you expect him to remember the throw away flip side that was common on most singles. And Pat Boone may seem boring but he was never going to outshine or outtalk his idol.
Did you notice Bing asked, "Did I sing that?" after Dinah sang a song beginning "You are the one, all through eternity..."? There's a reason he asked that: Bing never recorded such a song. The flip side of "Please" was the beautiful Robin & Rainger "Here Lies Love," ua-cam.com/video/B7rgQzhERns/v-deo.html
@@Movieman1776 i stand corrected. I was referring to the earlier Brunswick issue of the song. That's what I get for not listening to Jonzo 28 often enough. My apologies for the error.
@@stavinchain no apologies needed! It's actually a very nice song, I'm surprised that he didn't remember it. Of course with all the songs he recorded , that could be expected.. Here in Tacoma Wa,, where he was born, he is still very much remembered.
Bing was so great but his great friend Phil Harris should be noted as being able and unafraid to sing, and get away with it, to sing with his talking voice and sing along with the greats besides being an exceptional performer. Well I'm a Bing fan but Phil fan too.
I think I have only heard Phil sing a few songs, mostly his trademark 'silly' songs (besides Disney). When he started singing and Bing came in I was very surprised the quality of his voice, not a crooner for sure, but very unique and that deep base.
Great talents, great fun to see. But always wondered how Dinah, though so sweet, ever got famous as singer. Very thin, frail voice in her prime, and in her later years, even less so. No wonder Bing couldn't pick out some songs from her set ups.
The most impressive thing is the effortless way that Bing just slides into singing.
Man, was he great!
Dinah was a huge Bing fan and used to carry a big box of his 78s with her when she was on the road. Bing really loved her too.

A genius called Bing Crosby , that extraordinary voice , voice of gold!!!

Nice to see a genuine chat, not pre rehearsed like most of todays.
Very nice that Bing mentions Eddie Lang.
Bing had over 260 top ten hits. Who could remeber all of them, much less the singles.
+taddyd1 I agree :D
Such a fun tribute for Bing. What's not to like here? Dinah Phil and Pat. Nice band and giant humble guest!
There’s some wonderful stuff on you Tube and this is just superb. Always loved Mr Crosby.
Love this. Proper, talented entertainers!!☺️😍🙏
That was fun and good to see him with his friend, Phil Harris.

wow - thank you for an excellent video with some of my favorite entertainers of all time

This is so much fun.
Love Phil Harris as well. Smoke smoke smoke, Old Master Painter, The Thing etc etc.
This was fabulous....thank you so much for the upload!!!!!!
BING CROSBY! :D I like Bing Crosby
All of them have had number one hits
Woah, good memory, that's right. :)
Can't expect him to remember all his b-sides. He probably only sang the majority of them the once while recording them. Like most artists b-sides
Love it. Thanks for posting it.

Yeah Pat had that bad 70s comb over 'dry look"look that hid a receding hairline. Not a good look for him.
Pat Boone in my opinion was kind of boring. Bing was outstanding in this and many other videos.
