The best lure for a hungry bass is ANYTHING . I fell for all that expensive lure bullshit at the beginning, until my uncle showed me it's all about understanding the tides, knowing your locations and persistence. My uncle caught bass on a white shoe lace on a weighted hook. He only did that to show me that expensive lures are a waste of money and he was right. Now all I use is dirt cheap soft plastics on weighted hooks ... i catch a lot of bass on these in SE Ireland....
Yes, bass fishing is 90% finding the fish, and when the fish are 'on' they will take anything you show them.Unfortunately they aren't always on.Yes, soft plastics are great fish catchers- if the fish are within range. Yes, Chinese lures are a quarter the price of the originals, are well made, and catch fish. I buy the copies of any lure I'm likely to lose, ie sinkers. My floating and shallow divers are originals, some imported, some bought used, but not many at the silly money end. These lures go on forever, and each one will have its day. If all you use are soft plastics then you are limited to the marks, and conditions to fish them in- what do you do in a good blow? I don't like being a one trick pony, and I don't mind spending twenty quid on a lure that will reach the fish, catch them, and last five years. It's all about confidence mate- I've caught salmon on a lure made from a bent six inch nail, but only because I've been shown it can catch. It doesn't mean I don't want a selection of lures to cope with differing conditions.
Its funny how your choices wre so different from us here in Portugal. We fish mostly duo 175 flyers bevause in sand bottoms you need the distance to reach the hot spots. Obviously your choices are great but many would be easly outclassed here 😋. Most popular lures here would be: 1- duo tide minnow slim flyer 175 2- Shimano silent assassin 160f 3- daiea tournament/saltiga 17f Still great to know yiur choices, and funny/interesting to compare. You guys in uk really fish smaller and shallow lures
Yes. An interesting comparison a mixture of venues. I like that shimano super assasion160 and it’s caught fish here in the uk. Dual tide minnow another that didn’t quite make the list too
Loving your videos. Next year it would be awesome if you did a demo on how you personally fish each type of lure, showing reel speed with how you work the rod etc. Just a (selfish) suggestion!
Great I will look forward to it. I have only started bass fishing late this summer and have had two successful sessions on live prawn and three blanks on lures, so a bass on a lure is my target for next year.... with as many tips as possible from your channel!
A great video, I normally bait fish for my bass, mackerel head, mackerel in general or rag worm, I have been meaning to go lure fishing, I got the rod reel & some of the lures you mentioned, but every time I go out the door I leave it behind & go for the bait, I my try it this year & I shall let you know if I do,😀
Thats good to know , there’s pros and cons between bait and lure. Usually you will have a hunch that it’s lure time with bait fish around ... will be interested to hear how it goes let us all know
Megabass Zonk 120SW had landed 19.9KG Spanish mackerel in Abu Dhabi shore fishing tournament in 2017-2018 season. And it’s consistently landed 10kg plus throughout these years.
Just downloaded your top bass pdf. I am from Clacton on Sea where the water is very murky most of the time would this be a issue at all. Really want to start lure fishing. Thanks Russell
Gutted Megabass have apparently discontinued the Zonk, plus a notable catch on WSF means they are going silly money at the moment - bit of a modern classic though. Surprised there was no black fiiish minnow. Saved many a blank for me

High Matt, I know this one was 9 months ago, but, I'm not sure but one or two of them looked like barbless hooks ?? Do you use barbless trebles ? Or might you just crimp the barbs down for ease of unhooking ?? I do have a few largish lures and frankly the hooks are bloody enormous !! You could probably anchor a local coaster with them. Do you use the lures as bought 🤔 or do you change the hooks for something smaller and lighter 🤔. Found the bit about weedless hooks and jellys very interesting, will have to get some, do you weight the jelly ? Or just use it as is, I guess it must cast well on it's own. Cheers for now. Les.
Hi Les, yes to all those questions really because I’ll mix and match all sorts. Sometimes crimping hooks some barbless - I weigh hooks on a micro scale and replace with an equal weight. However they don’t always start off perfectly balanced so not always worth it. Weedless and weightless is good for soft plastics but that’s a localised thing , experiment.
I'm typing this from my garden shed after asking the missus if I can have 200 quid for lures! she'll come round........ eventually! lol Great video Matt though! ;)
Saltwater Angler, I got the 130mm version in Clown on amazon, I think it came from Spain somewhere. Not sure on the weight but it moves great in the water 👍🏼
@@SaltwaterAngler Definitely need a few small lures at times, I like the transparent patterns because they are a bit more subtle, when that's required, even without going down a size.

Nice one ! I like those have one in white like a needlefish design. I don’t tend to use them here in Sussex but I’m due a trip west so will bring it along - I till I loose it first cast 😀
Hi Matt, great video I’ve bought most of these following your advice. Please can you recommend the best type of treble hooks for replacing the ones on the hard lures when they get rusty - many thanks

It’s very venue specific but it’s Shimano reels for me - I love their front drag button so much better to use than daiwa for example. 2500 or 3000 exage or similar lure rods something around 10-30 gramme 9ft. I use a favorite as reviewed on the channel. I have a few different brands of fluro and braid.
Hi mate if you would to recommend one of these lures for fishing into a estuary that is no more than 2 meters deep at MAX which one would you pick? Not prepared to spend 20 quid on a lure that doesn’t suit my conditions, for now😃
I’ve been told to get the savage gear and black minnow soft plastics and I have fished them for almost 1 year now and I didn’t get a bite on them I’m dying to catch a sea bass and I’m beginning to turn to hard plastics now I have the rod and all of the gear but the only lures in my tackle box are soft plastics and they are not working for me so is there a hard plastic that would suit? Ive tried to go out with guides also but I’m only 14 and they won’t bring me out so I’m on my own👍
Think about where the Bass expect to find their quarry . If I was you I’d fish somewhere and get to know it well rather than move around. What part of the uk are you fishing
I have fished a spot nearly 4 times now at night so I know it a good bit but the fish just don’t seem to be there so Im looking for a different spot now. I am actually living in Ireland I’m in south west cork by clonakilty if you know where that is I’ve found your videos the best of the best for a beginner like myself just learning how to do the simple things and now I’m looking at your more advanced stuff now
@@SaltwaterAngler Yes,yes, yes. White bass stick reeled in very slow with rod at 30 degrees got me a double figure fish in the dark a week ago.. Never been hit so hard, nearly fell over.In an estuary I would be happy with soft plastics alone, they are so adaptable.

So generally they are designed and weighted for three sets of trebbles . in terms of hook ups , landing the fish and action you should just leave trebbles on. However for fish welfare (this is a bit odd because your dragging it through the water! ) then crimping the barb as a small gesture ! Or even better switching to single hooks is better for retrieving hooks and fish release. So for me I do a bit of all three but will edge towards singles. Now.
@@SaltwaterAngler I tend to fish singles when I know the majority of fish will be juniors, in the estuary mainly .
