  • In this video I am going to teach you "trennbare Verben" example sentences. Trennbare Verben or in English separable verbs are an important part of the German language. It is a special kind of verb which precedes a prefix due to which the entire meaning of the verb is changed.
    In this first video of that series I will teach you the basics of these "trennbare Verben", after which you hopefully will understand why there are weird short words at the end of some German sentences. At the end of the video I am going to give to you the most important prefixes you should try to memorize so you can distinguish separable from non-separable verbs. The German separable verbs are special kind of verb which cannot be neglected and is important to know for any German learner.
    Time Stamps:
    0:00 Intro
    1:10 What are separable verbs?
    2:30 How to form "trennbare Verben"?

    I teach German for a high school homeschool co-op. We only meet once a week so I have to supplement our in person instruction with helpful videos. I have watched a lot of videos. You have the best balance for my students. You make things very clear and your instruction is fun but not annoying to the students. I am already a native speaker so I know what I am looking for in good instruction.

    Vielen dank! I thought I had learned all of the trennbare prefixes, but I have come to trust I will always learn something from Luzi and Johannes even if I think I know the topic because they are so delightfully thorough. I watched this video and realized I was missing some prefixes! When I first started learning a few months ago, I did not like trennbare verbs because they tripped me up while trying to understand sentences. But now I LOVE trennbare words. Absolutely follow his instructions in this video and learn the prefixes well. I spent a lot of time learning what the prefixes mean. It helped me to draw a simple picture with what the prefix meant. For example for ab- I drew a picture of a ball rolling off and dropping from a ledge. So after learning these little symbols, my understanding of German absolutely exploded, trennbare words and their prefixes seem to be somewhat literal. inseparable verbs...sometimes literal. so if you know all of these prefixes and a verb, you suddenly can understand 10 or more verbs, AND adverbs that have been made from verbs, AND adjectives that have been made from verbs, AND nouns that have been made from verbs. So I highly recommend following the advice in this video. His advice is absolutely valuable!

    Anderer Ansatz / Another approach:
    It’s basically a phrasal verb with a weird infinitive and perfect form plus the possibility to be precise in between (at least if your are an English speaker).
    Infinitive: to turn off = ausmachen or ausschalten
    Example:
    “Schalt das (blöde Licht, das mich die ganze Zeit blendet) aus!”
    „Turn that (stupid light that is blinding me all the time) off!”
    Perfect: “ausgemacht”. Bit weird, because together again.
    That’s what I know is so difficult for most non-Germans. To understand, why the prefix goes to the end of the sentence. Here you can get the connection to English.
    Be careful when it comes to subordinate clauses though…
    Gell?

    I'm doing a course named 'Begegnungen A1 - Schubert-Verlag', and there it says that the prefixes 'hinter-, wieder-' can either be separable or not. Does that apply for some cases in specific?
    Great and clear explanation. You're a great teacher Luzi! I always enjoy your videos ;)

    • @yourgermanteacher
      @yourgermanteacher  3 роки тому

      vielen dank vittoria, :)
      ok “hinter” as a prefix is not separable. maybe they talked about hinterher... for example hinterherlaufen (separable). “wieder” thats correct can be both. but there are not many... ;) most important one: wiederholen (not separable).

    Does the prefix of a seperable verb always go at the end of the sentence (assuming the prefix is seperable). In other words, when a prefix is seperable does it always go at the end of the sentence? Or can there be an adverb or something else after the prefix.
    For example: “ich stehe früh auf heute“

    • @yourgermanteacher
      @yourgermanteacher  4 роки тому

      im nebensatz the entire verb is on last position. and in perfekt its the past participle (ich bin früh aufgestanden). otherwise yes prefix is always on last position. you might hear sentences like your last one in spoken language... but its not correct.
