Derby Buses 1991, A nostalgic view into public transport in Derby before pedestrianisation.

- I originally uploaded this video back in 2008 when UA-cam was low resolution (240p) so decided to re-render the video at higher resolution.
This original video had been viewed over 22,300 times since I uploaded it.
Note there is no sound on this video.
This ten minute video of Buses around Derby City Centre was filmed in 1991.
I would like to thank Vanessa Robshaw for passing on the footage to share with the world. We all take these things for granted at the time but here we are privileged to be able to see a Nostalgic window on Derby.
Its odd, when you say 1991 it does not sound that long ago does it?, seems like just a few years ago as I can clearly remember it well, but then you work it out its actually 22 years ago!
My God that's amazing and somewhat worrying, I guess it depends how old you are as to how long ago 1991 feels to you.
What a Nostalgic trip this is, Before such things as Westfield and the Quad.
The footage here allows us to see a rare glimpse into the public transport that we all took for granted when we used it back then. As you probably know most of the bus services in Derby today are run and Arriva and Trent Barton.
In this video you can see a wide variety of bus operators.
The video is mainly about the Buses, I'm sure there are Bus Spotters out there that will be able to reel-off the details about the many buses featured and if there are then feel free to post the details in the comments for those who are interested in such things.
My own personal interest in this video is the locations and how much they have changed.
The most significant change is the pedestrianisation of most of the roads where these buses can be seen navigating. It looks really chaotic and dangerous seeing bus after bus going down St Peters street (See video at 01:01 to see what I mean). You don't know you're born with today's pedestrian only areas!
Do you remember the "Blue and white" Derby taxis?, well you will see several of them in this video!
oh and look out for the dreadful haircuts, fashions and cars of the day.
Points of interest...

Please rate and comment on this video if it stirs any memories. I'm sure it will do for some of you.
Even better still is if you spot YOURSELF in the video, you never know someone out there may recognise themselves!
For instance are you the lady at 08:46 seeing yourself 22 years in the past?

Wow bought back some memories, i left the Great city in 91 aged 20 to join the Navy, this is how i remember the old place, i just dont get the same feelings when i visit now days, so much has changed but not for the better.
Yes I completely agree I was 16 just moved to derby in 1991 my mum lived in derby from 1978 I used to travel alot to derby to see her have alot of fond memorys derby is not quite the same anymore
Seen too many good shops dissappear
I grew up in Derby too, I was born in the old city hospital (now the Royal Derby Hospital). I lived in the Nottinghamshire area for 13 years, moved back here in 2020, which turned out to be the worst decision of my entire adult life. Derby is such a sad, miserable place full of rough sleepers and aggressive beggars.
Even in the early nineties Derby still had some charm and character to it. What happened!? Its such a dismal place now.
Immigration
Too many eastern europeans flooded in.

Nearly 30 years ago.. Where's that time gone.. 😳 Good old days of Derby Town centre
Absolutely brilliant memories of not only a much better bus services then but how BADLY Derby has gone down hill.
Bloody councils have a lot to answer for!😢
My memories of Derby go back to the 1940s when green trolley and motorbuses were run by Derby Corporation. The trolleybuses were smooth and silent and could zoom up hills like St Peters Street. I remember one occasion in the 1950s when we were travelling on London Road towards Alvaston, the trolleybus was full with plenty standing and the conductor gave 3 rings on the bell which meant do not stop to pick up more passengers. He also pulled a strap across the platform to stop anyone falling off! The traffic must have been light that day because we nearly took off crossing the Wilmorton canal bridge and reached the old laundry in Alvaston with its beautiful garden in record time and I bet the buses of today take longer.
You have great memories. Ive got some old Derby footage from 1965 : ua-cam.com/video/upTtjRukEdU/v-deo.html
@@comedyhunter Thank you! That brings back more memories!
Good times 👍🏻 no internet or mobile phone! 👍🏻👍🏻
yes innocent times
No snapchat no tiktok no nonsense back then. People got along now its all about who has the most followers on IG.
I was 9 when this video was taken and remember Derby as it was then. It doesn't seem all that long ago.
I was 32, and I can remember town centre like this but doesnt really seem that long ago does it.
@@comedyhunter it a shit hole now
Brings back so many memories. I forgot all about the blue and white taxis. But after watching this footage, its not difficult to see why St.Peters Street and The Corn Market eventually got pedestrianised. It was very chaotic, not helped by the fact the buses traveled so fast.
Camms collapsibles.
Our school used them for their bus service. Proper sheds on wheels. Water would fire through the floor when driven over big puddles.... Kids even launched top deck seats through the sliding windows.
A lot of comments about Derby losing its character with these kind of changes of things like Intu shopping centre. And I kind of agree, not sure why. But I do like the new Intu shopping centre, it competes with cities a lot bigger. The old Eagle centre, even when I was younger looked dated in parts, but would love to see old photos again. One thing I really miss was the old
Eagle centre market. The layout was brilliant as a toddler, can remember wandering from my Mum and Nan once, and got totally lost but they must've heard my cries. But I loved the bright pastel colours, and also, this is weird, but think it may of been part of the air conditioning system, but there was these bright plastic discs at each end of the air con grills and I'd stare at them for ages wondering what they were or did. And the other one, I used to love the old CCTV cameras in boots. They looked liked someone chopped off a daleks head, turned it upside down and mounted two flashing red lights on them!
Gosh how I miss these double deckers. I sadly never got to travel on a Daimler Fleetline but I did get to travel on a few of the Volvo citybuses.

I don't know what it? is like these days, but in 1991 there seemed to be a huge number of buses. When I grew up in Derby 1960/70's I recall always having to wait for buses.
This is a real nostalgia trip for me.
Having driven busses in Sheffield for a small private company,we had an old fleet of Nationals,MCW,Atlanteans ect.
Great to be reminded of deregulation in other towns, and how the so called big companies react to having to fight for fares.
Thanks for the upload.
I loved these memories of those buses! My grandad was working Busdriver for a Blue bus and Cityrider Link bus service for 27 years. Sadly, my grandad has pass-away from June 13th last year. Due to health failure. My family is being cared with grandad... He has 66... Is a long way he love to drive for long life the journey local bus service to goes to... I miss those buses aren't, hey... That's how sad m, they've all long gone buses has been disappeared it is! :(
Sorry to hear about your grandad. Yes its all changed so much over the years
I think you will find the worst monstrosity in DERBY is the Westfield Centre, and the Cinema De (Grey Box) Lux
Great memories, thanks
Alan's Dad: That is so amazing, I've there before since 1989 my grandma live there and she working with routemaster in Derbyshire... Sadly has pass-away, due to ill health from 2006. Anyway, I love this buses in Derby... Now is new buses for overall... is not worth plan upgraded weren't... I miss that classic buses from history isn't!
Yeah, me too... I know is a long story about that, aren't.
Incredible! When it was pedestrianised? I seem remember it was already pedestrianised in '95 when I moved to Derby. I see number 43 to Alvaston, it was my bus route to Wilmorton College (RIP). Great video!
Wiow! 👍
He still works at Software AG now, but they have since relocated to Pride Park near the back of the train station. I started working there last Wednesday!
There was alot of competition around the late 80s & early 90s when Camms of Nottingham & Midland Red began to compete with the council owned company. Camms mainly ran a fleet of worn out buses, such as older versions of the Fleetline & some coaches. Some of these were found to be unroadworthy when checked, as were some of the DCT examples. Camms cheap fares often temped passengers to "Catcha Camms". hoping that paying passengers would return again the following week.
Thanks for the heads up, comedyhunter! I was 2 when this was filmed, and depending on what month it was filmed, I might have just moved into my new house I currently reside at now in Littleover.
Also, I see the Sinfin bus was 37 back then as well haha. Oh, and the 36 says "Blagreaves Lane" lane I think? I didn't notice that before. I live right next to that road :). Oh, and my dad would have started working at the old Software AG offices on Colyear St (in 1990).
I think it was pedestrianised in the mid 90s, perhaps someone can remember.
I too spent 4 years at Wilmorton College, Really sad they knocked it all down :(
Glad you liked the video.
Boo! Mackworth College was far superior
Oh dear!! :(
Thanks for uploading this, really enjoyed watching, not sure why exactly, I mean what's so exciting about buses? I always remember when I lived in Derby till the age of four then sadly moved to Swindon. But even before being old enough to see other towns and cities to compare, as a nipper, I always loved the blue colour scheme of the buses and taxis. And although it wasn't an extremely bold colour scheme, as I have got older and been able to visit other towns cities, can only think of Brighton that has a bold colour scheme. But also reminds me of
When my sister moved back to Derby from Swindon for Uni, she lived in Normanton, and we used to play "Spot the bluebird" not sure if Datsun's counted though lol
having a right flash back now,,,,I remeber queuing for buses on the market place aswell....and up at the spot....coming into town Id get off on babington lane.
Those CAMMS buses were set up by ex blue bus (city) drivers. With Trent there were three competing companies
"I was 2 when this was filmed, and depending on what month it was filmed I might of been moving into my new house I'm in now in Littleover =].
Also,? I see the Sinfin bus was 37 then as well haha." - my original comment from 2008. My spelling, grammar and punctuation was awful back then! :( lol
Have to say they were better times.
@lillabethsmum I remember the mullet bus driver. It was so long and he had a flick. Think he was called Wayne.
wow 1991!!!! Its amazing but when you hear the year 1991 you dont think of it being over 20 years ago. I rmemember it well before it all being made pedestrianized. As much as i hate change and the loss of character to the city centre making it all pedestrian is for the best. I remeber as a kind walking up St Peters St walking on the pavement and having a bus literally millimetres away from taking my head off
Happpy Days
When Derby use to be nice. I will always love Derby, but it's so run down now.
A lot has changed in the 33 years since this video was shot but its not bad, There is loads of great stuff in Derby. You have to see the positives. Are you a subscriber to my channel? Ive got a lot of Derby stuff to look at.
O.K a lot of busses.......I want the last 10 minutes of my life back🙄
I think this is a health and safety video. I remember the newly painted double yellow line which curves round the new paved corner outside the Midland bank. When you're a kid things stick in you're mind, how odd.
peter41273 No this is my grandad messing about with his camcorder, which he'd just bought at the time. He was and is very keen on buses, which is why you see so many here.
Derby seemed alot busier in them days compared to now
people dont go out as much post covid and people dont have the money they used to
@@comedyhunter yes I know what depressing times we live in hoping it gets better soon
A brand new government for starters * fingers crossed
Might I add how traffice seems to flow so much freely than it does now a days. whom ever thought of keeping the Osmaston Road/ The Spot/ London Road bottle neck must be mad and then to top off with the Westfield caparks enterances/exits. City planners need to rethink and get the roads back to some normality. Burton is another one which has suffered with pedestrianisation
How times have changed cars, buses even shops. Littlewoods now Primark, M&S is now Tesco Metro whilst the top floor was the now obselete JJB Sports. Albert Street is no longer one way but two way traffice whilst Cornmarket, Market Place, Sadlergate & St Peters Street are now traffic free zones. I think Derby was the one of a few cities that were still using former City Transport vehicles some amassing the age of 26 years old. All changed in the name of progress now. Good or Bad you can decide

I just read the info for this video its so true what you said and the bus routes are soo much different as well the bus drivers then were mad see how fast they was going lol i think it is quite sad? too because it really does hit you that time goes by.
I remember them blue and white taxis, my next door neightbour was a taxi driver and he had 1 it use too be parked on the front. Do you have any of the old wilmorton becuase god dammn thats changed alot.
Well... Just sad at all!. :(
05:53 Yes it is!
Memories
Was on Trent at the time (not anymore? though!) what an excellent 10 minutes. Unbelievable how it has all changed in the following years, probably for the worse some would say. 5* stuff that
They're probably still using half of them...
I've just seen a camms double decker with advert boards on it. Most buses didn't have these till the late 90s early 2000s.
I can remember when Trentbarton use to be a proper company with double decker's, unlike today.
What cpmpany were the blue taxis??
Who else remembers the bus driver with the mullet @? 2:53
The lady crossing the road in front? of the red car 1:08 looks like my Mum,
I only used the Camms busses when I had no other choice. They were always dirty and mecanically dodgy (Rather like using alot of the unlicenced taxis in London) They got taken over by another Nottingham company and bit the dust a year oe two later.
In 1991?
Seems funny now to see buses and traffic in the pedestrian zones.
Yes looks like chaos back then but you never knew anything was wrong.
What's funny about it??
Bus chaos ! But pedestrianisation and the huge intu centre has killed off that side of town. St.peters street always seems dirty and unloved nowadays.
Used to be better as far as I see in this video. Now Derby is somewhat declining. Why did the blardy stupid council change the roads.
Derby really has gone to shit
Stop swearing and watch your language, mate! 😡
city in name and village in nature. forget the past and push on with the future and think outside the box regular. not just every now and again or you'll never be anything.
...and who are you?
Buses fucking everywhere. Thank god they changed the roads. All those buses pumping out that dirty diesel.
Watch your language, mate!
