Shopping sustainable brands is one of those things that is much easier for people with larger budgets, it’s like buying all all organic produce, grass-fed beef, free-range chickens and eggs, etc., some of these are gradually becoming more affordable, but some, like meats, can still be three times as much. I try my best, but sometimes I really need something and the only affordable option is fast-fashion. I lost three sizes a few years ago and needed to replace most items. I do my own alterations and it’s not really possible to reduce clothing more than a size, two at the very most, for things like simple skirts. If it weren’t for H&M I wouldn’t have been able to get dressed. I think avoiding synthetics is a good idea to get better quality at cheaper clothing brands. Now that I have a more-than-adequate wardrobe, I can go more slowly and be more selective.
Look on Vinted. They have a lot of clothes at a more affordable price. You can also sell the clothes you no longer want so you can save up and buy the more sustainable clothes.
Meat, even grass-fed organic meat, is more expensive, resource intensive and polluting than plants. I've been vegan for 13 years now and very happy with the decreased pace that my body is aging, my weight and overall fitness. Even if you choose conventional over organic produce, your impact on the planet is much reduced compared to any meat.
Try lent and juices from vegetables and chlorella your gut will be very thankfull to you when you clean them. You'll start eating less and feeling more energetic
On one side yes but also sustainable means reduce, with fast fashion people buy much more because it is cheap and change trends every week. In total it cost more that they think. With more expensive sustainable clothing people more cherished it and wear it more and longer time and more often. Important thing is price per wearing. The point is reduced how often do you shop and how many pieces in closet do you have.
would you share fast fashion brands where you were able to source natural fabric clothes from?? i’m going through the exact same problem where i don’t have clothes because of height gain and weight loss and transitioning from younger teenager to young adult, but im trying to slowly build a quality/sustainable wardrobe
it sucks trying to shop ethically and not having much money, i have gotten used to fast fashion prices its so shocking to me the regular prices for non fast fashion clothing
Yeah, it's pretty tough making the transition. I think it helps to not only change the brands you shop but also the way you shop too - frequency, secondhand first, etc.
@@JessicaHarumi i have been shopping secondhand a lot more and stopped buying from fast fashion brands, i also search up if a brand is ethical and good for the environment before buying from them, this also makes a good habit of me not spending much money
I recently bought a blazer and pants from KOTN. They are beautifully made and I was fortunate enough to find these pieces on a great sale (I realize that buying on sale isn't really supporting the brand but I am a 76-year-old on a limited income).
It's really hard to shop sustainably with work/changing aesthetics and styles. I really like to have a variety of clothes but definitely can't afford dropping $$$$ on it. This video is really helpful and I definitely be on the lookout for sales
Oh good, I'm glad you found it helpful! I think part of embracing sustainable fashion is just getting used to buying new things less often. This is how I can justify spending more on one piece. It certainly takes some adjusting to though. 😊
This is such a helpful video! I’ve just started transitioning from fast fashion to shopping sustainably and ethically and this video widens the field when I next need something to add to my wardrobe.
yes!! we love this!
I am not even concerned for "sustainable" *I WANT 100% COTTON*
Your voice is so calming🙂
I love this! Thank you so much. This is super helpful!
It was such a joy to watch this video. I loved all your picks and saved the video under my favorites for future reference. I liked and subscribed.
Oooh thank you so much! 🤗💕
Thank you so much, very detailed video. I really appreciate you organizing the different brands with a visual of what's on their website.
Awesome video. Thank you for summing this up for us. I will be checking some of these out.
I agree! This is a wonderful video. I just sat through several videos (of other UA-camrs) trying to deliver this info but either just ended up in a rant or some martyr type who talks about what she supports and doesn’t support without actually giving any real info. This one here is the real deal! 😌
SO appreciate this video! Really love how you lay out the efforts and work that goes into the pricing w more sustainable brands - and mention that it’s almost never possible to make an instant switch, it’s such a process. Not to mention the privilege and accessibility I’ve learned usually comes with being able to eat local/clean and supporting smaller businesses and clean fashion. Buying sustainably is so counter-intuitive to all the messaging we’re presented with in our social media feed and beyond - especially for the fashun bbs 😅 I know and love some of these brands, but some of these were awesome to hear about! Thanks for sharing!
Yes yes to all of this!! Thanks for the thoughtful comment and the support! 🤗❤️❤️
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for this very informative (and to the point) video! It is so appreciated and refreshing! Whew! 😌
Glad it was helpful!
Love this!
This was so so helpful! Thank you for sharing this! It's really difficult finding sustainable fashion that looks like and doesn't break the bank. I can't wait to try some of these!
I'm so happy to hear that Maggie! Thanks for watching!
I really appreciate this video for many reasons but my favorite part was how you talked about the brand and followed it up with similar more popular brands. I love Everlane but I am not as much as an Anthropogie gal so it really helped me to visualize and narrow down the brands that may speak to me more. Great content.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found it helpful! Although I would definitely encourage you to check out the brands anyways if you're curious as there's not always a perfect comparison to make.
Thanks for sharing! This is really helpful and informative.
So gad to hear it, thanks!
Thank you, Jessica! As someone who values slow fashion but is on a tight budget, I found these tips incredibly helpful! I recently got a jean jacket from Able and it goes with everything! It's the perfect summer to fall transition piece. Thanks for creating such helpful, valuable content!
You're so welcome! The Able jean jackets are so cute and I'm so happy to hear you like it!
I’m going to save this video, it’s hard to find good brands that I can afford. I already discovered Quince, and bought a lot from them, but their selection is limited.
Thank you so much for this video! Such a great resource, especially considering my shopping habits have changed drastically in recent years. Appreciate your time and effort! 🤍
Thank you!! Ive been looking into sustainable fashion but had no idea where to start because I don’t even know much about fashion in general, and you’ve just laid out the basics for me! This is great!
I recently got some spending money and have been wanting to renew my wardrobe entirely as most of what’s in it now is incredibly old or poorly made. Some of these pieces are terrible and I’ve had them for 7 yrs+!! I finally have an idea of what to buy, look for, and where to start! I obviously can’t do the whole redo right now because sustainable fashion is quite pricey, buy I think I’ll have a good start! Thank you again, cause I was overwhelmed and was thinking about just continuing with fast fashion. Great video!
Awe thank you! I'm so happy to hear that this helped. 😊
thank you for the recommendations
Don’t forget Patagonia- leader in sustainable clothing & have a trade-in/used shop. It’s more outdoor style but my husband loves their clothes
Yes, I'm a big fan of Patagonia and their sustainability efforts. Many of their pieces are a bit pricier in my opinion but well worth the money if you're looking for practical outdoor wear.
Hello, thank you for this great video, do you have any recommendation for a slim fit organic type of clothing apparel similar to what express or 32 heat brands sell?
Thankyou for this helpful video! This is a bit off topic but I had to point out that you are so similar looking to Olivia Colman. Yet prettier!!
Haha I've never heard that before, how interesting! I love Olivia Coleman's vibe so I'll take that as a compliment. So glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching!
Some great new lines that I wasn't aware of. Why didn't you include Everlane...just curious :-)
I actually style my clients and myself with a mixture of old and new and their own wardrobe finds- secondhand for trenchcoats, bags, acessories is a key factor. So
Excellent video
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so incredibly much!
One brand I never hear about from influencers is Eileen fisher. She is quite expensive, but I love her flowing, easy look, and since I am getting on in years, the comfort of her clothes. Do you know any influencers who do videos about her pieces?
Hi, I don't know of any influencers who have reviewed Eileen Fisher but I do know plenty about the brand because it's been a favorite of my mom's wardrobe for many decades! It's pricier but I can contest that the pieces hold up really well over time and they're quite timeless designs too.
thankssss from india❤❤
my problem is why sustainable fashion is so ugly, where are the bright colors, funky patterns, sequins, just anything interesting?! it’s all neutral, or dark or plain
like what’s stopping you from making bright pink, yellow, teal, stripes, printa?!? omg 😔😩
So these brands reflect my personal style which is very neutral and simple stuff. This video is also more geared towards affordable wardrobe basics like plain t-shirts, that people need to replace more often. There are lots of sustainable brands doing bright colors and patterns! Here are a few that come to mind: Colorful Standard, Farm Rio, WRAY, Mara Hoffman, Back Beat Co. I'm sure there are more and ore affordable ones too. There are lots of colorful sustainable fashion bloggers who know all the good brands too!
i get what you are saying. it''s very basic which allows it to be worn with pretty much anything and makes it an easy choice. but i would love some eccentric clothing too.
I've been doing some research on knitted fabrics, specifically things like wool and cashmere. I was reading and hearing that brands like naadam and everlane have low-mid-quality cashmere and wools. So although they might be more sustainable/affordable they might not be good quality. Even worse quality for these fabrics are uniqlo or H&M. You kind of get what you pay for in terms of natural wools and natural fabrics. Cheaper wools and other animal fabrics like alpaca are more likely to be brittle and thus tear and create holes because cheaper sweaters made from wool and cashmere are usually thinner knits.
Oh I see! Thanks for explaining this. I've not tried Everlane or Naadam cashmere but I've noticed this with other fast fashion brands, specifically with pilling. Quince seems to have pretty good quality despite being a more affordable sustainable brand.
@Jessica Harumi nice! I'm in Canada so I have yet to try quince but I really want to!
For me, my issue is finding plus size clothing that’s sustainable. Pact goes to a 2x but runs small. Tradlands has a good range but not exactly what I’m looking for other than the tees which are always sold out :/
Girlfriend collective has activewear, but many of their pieces also run small. Sustainable plus size fashion is frustrating so I’m still mostly purchasing second hand for Eileen Fisher items
I'm with you! Google Plus size Sustainable brands and look up recent blog posts. I found a post sharing over 50 plus size sustainable brands!😊
hello! i know this is late but i just came across this video and comment. See ROSE Go is a slow fashion brand that focuses on premium plus sized fashion with timeless pieces!
A couple of other brands that have a better size range are Free Label and Universal Standard. One is more loungewear (with amazing bras) and the other more tailored and everyday pieces.
One thing I don’t like about pact, their sizing. I have been a medium my whole life, I am a L to XL in their brand, kinda icky to me.
Thank you for this video! My question is - are these American brands? I guess I also need to start thinking where the items are being shipped from? I am UK based. Wouldn't it be more environmentally friendly if I shopped at European shops? Or if I am buying sustainable fashion from overseas it's not as bad as fast fashion in general? 🤔 I want to shop sustainably but I also dont want to make my life impossible 😂
Just checked Vetta Capsule. What is happening?none of their products are available?
Unfortunately they recently went out of business.
Too bad about them going out of business. I was just checking out the website and really liked what they were doing.
Lily Silk is good, too, but they don’t use bust darts, which makes it harder for non-Asians like me to get a good fit. They are apparently designed for A-cup women, I’m a D, well, ok, E really, but I keep trying to deny it.
Do they ship worldwide?
Not sure which brand you're referring to but I believe most of them do ship internationally.
I bought about $500 worth of clothing from Quince and I am sending back each piece. The dresses were not comfortable on my skin and the material didn’t feel like it would breath well. I thought I’d found a brand I could rock with and was so disappointed 😔
Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that! I’m curious as to what you ordered. I’ve tried their silk and cashmere pieces and they were all really nice. Some of them I’ve had in my wardrobe for 6 years!
Whattt? They are my favorite brand, 1/3 of my wardrobe is from them at this point and growing. Their silk linen and cotton are my favorite. Give them another go!
actually. four days much more expensive than you quoted
Good to know! They likely changed their pricing from the time I filmed this video.
I would like this video to have more focused on the way that these companys are sustainable instead of showing their products.
Noted, thanks for the feedback!
Great idea for video but I wish you advertised brands you actually tried
These aren’t affordable at all to a lot of people. 30 is kind of at the max for me and most things on these sites are way more than that. Even at 30, that would make just one outfit 60 at minimum. Is that crazy to anyone else or am i just broke
I tried to preface this video by stressing that these brands are more affordable by sustainable brand standards. If you’re looking for a lower price point then shopping secondhand is the way to go. You can get a lot of these brands for a fraction of the price and you’ll know the quality/ethics of their production are good too!
@@JessicaHarumi very true, second hand can be a great option. i was just shocked at the prices on the websites to be honest, because id never looked before
@@Lily-ex4ip for 1 basic botton-up shirt, the cheapest sustainable fabric alone cost me $12. The labour cost, etc is not included. It's hard to make sustainable shirt for $30
@@sekar9901yes of course theres a reason for the price which we cant really change, and its worth it if you have the money, but lots of people just dont
Sizing for some of these brands is not inclusive
Leather is in no way sustainable. Every company who sells leather is therefore not sustainable.
I think this is debatable, as leather is naturally biodegradable and typically more durable and long lasting than faux leather products. I suppose the more eco-friendly options are companies using leather byproducts/ recycled materials or faux leather products made from plant-based materials (although many of these are not naturally biodegradable).
there are already millions of cattle being slaughtered for the beef industry (different argument) and not using their byproduct, leather, would be incredibly wasteful
@@JessicaHarumiTrue. I don't understand vegans. They talk about animal abuse etc.. But they usually underestimate scale of plastic pollution. A lot of fashion brands don't care about pollution. Their rejects and donated clothes are being burned in inscinerators are a fuel for the poor in Bulgaria and Ukraine. Or dumped in slums in poor countries like Ghana where only 10% is used and the rest is dumped into ocean and landfill and chokes turtles and breaks into toxic microplastics that starves krill. So what is more important cows or whole environment?
