Your videos are great to watch. Love the tempo and focus! I finally have the sp404sx to join my circuit.both units are great on their own, but together they are just wuuaaaarr. You can not, do not have fun!
Cool, more setup/combo oriented videos would be great! Not many people out there are showing how gear can be used together/possible set up combinations.
I just got a novation circuit to pair with my sp404sx, pattern sequencing when making beats but I am in love with the sp404sx sound and FX. Thanks to this video I realized I can have both!!
The channel you set on the SP is called the base channel, the next channel is offset from that. So if you set the SP to channel 2, those sub-banks would play on 3, etc. Like you guessed.
As others have said, the SX and A are identical, other than paint. The sequencing improvement was actually a firmware update for the TR-8, which improved its ability to sequence any 404. So you probably saved your self some cash, as you can pick up an SX for $300-ish, and an A will typically list for closer to $500 new...
Used prices can be weird cause your expected to pay for nostalgia and things like that sometimes, also people are greedy and expect to use it until they realize it's not a magic flute that does all the work for you and they expect to break even a year and a half later or think it's value went up just being in their possession. lol
just started messing with this setup and its super fun but wanted to point out, the 404 - at least 404a which i have - receives incoming midi starting on note 46 (meaning that's the midi note for pad A1), which maps to somewhere kinda random on the circuit in chromatic mode, basically in the middle of the octaves which unfortunately aren't super clearly marked. just a heads up for anyone who was also confused by where the 404 samples "start" when using circuit to sequence, it not like "bottom note of circuit = A1 on 404" which would ideal at least to my brain
5:39 I didn't know the Circuit remember the last note that you can use to duplicate across. I'm learning some valuable things from your videos. Thanks for the tip!
so you're saying circuit has a click sound when playing back samples in the drum 1, 2, 3, or 4 sections? That might be the samples inside have a sharp attack sound. or are you hearing the click on the SP?
it is only the circuit when hitting the buttons, the samples are smooth. And yes, only drumsection, synths are fine.i tried the samples in ableton and no clicks, so the noise comes from the circuit.:(
there is no difference between the two except the color scheme and the crapola samples that came with it. the midi compatability can be upgraded in any sx unit. it was a cash grab on rolands part
Dope as always!! This is has been my go to set up for a while (got a few vids on my channel) I'm thinking of adding a Mono Circuit to this chain, let's see what happens ;)
Hi, just finding this video.. Could I do the same with Akai Fire sequence midi controller for FL studio ? I'm curious I don't have a sp404 and I love what it has to offer from what I see
Great tutorial, man. Quick question: why do we need to route the circuit audio back though the 404? Is there no way of using the 404's effects on the samples if they've been triggered externally?
Circuit Output to RCA input of 404 to use the effects of the 404. Yes you can use the OG (one with the CF Card). I use mine with a different sequencer, and have so with the Circuit as well.
Notice that pad one on circuit triggered pad 2 on SP404. That’s what’s annoying about this! A while back I tried this with Digitakt and SP404, but the pads don’t line up with triggers on SP.
Could a "Sample" be a backing track for a live band set? So I could use the Novation to trigger the backing track & then send a click which is in time out it's headphone jack?
ive got one coming this week ,this vid was useful as i might also use circuit to trigger it. i guess that the channel1 , 2 thing is a way to spread 60 notes / 120 notes (12 pads x 10 banks ?) equally as hitting 120 notes on one midi channel is a little ' impossible ' ? . as 2 x channels with 6 note poly also matches the 12 note poly on sp404 it pairs up well , though it would remove ability to use synth noises.
Mr. Enrique, You make everything look so simple and easy. Like your technic, I have a Novation Circuit and never got around to use it because it seems hard for me.Hope to pick your brain if I can to learn from your great knowledge.
Amazing! Have you tested on the drum channels of Circuit? Can you try other sequencers with sp404sx? Like beatstep, pro or not, if you have those... cause I would like to use my Circuit with both synths.
Totally, any sequencer should work on the SP. i just know circuit is one of the easiest POLYPHONIC sequencer, resulting in 6 pads of the SP being played at once. Beatstep Pro is monophonic. As for the drum channels, you'll only be able to play 4 notes of the SP because Circuits drum midi 10 is locked.
Enrique Martinez Thanks! In the end i thought too about polyphony, now that 1.7 firmware will add "microsteps" to the synths too! I guess i just need a Maxi Circuit if they ever do that lol
technically yes, but you'll find that depending on what midi channels you have set on the synths and SP one of the devices will be sharing midi notes, or being layered. My approach in that situation would be to have EITHER the BSii or the Minilogue on midi 1 (synth 1 on circuit) Then have the SP on midi channel 2 (synth 2 on circuit) This way synth 1 will be acting as the sequencer for one of the synths, and synth 2 will be playing samples on the SP404. Hope that made sense.
bass station II is on it's way im thinking MIDI 1- BSII MIDI 2- SP and layer with minilogue (theres a sync in and out on the back of the Korg????) unless MIDI channel 10 on the circuit works too?
really cool. I was going SP in the Fall, then a friend gave me a great deal for an OT and I went for it. Sometimes I think I'd be better off with the SP, the OT is cool but man...feels like being back in school :)
I feel you on that one. I have the OT and if i don't use it for a week or so i have to spend a day with it alone relearning it haha. the MK2 version helps with a lot of the workflow stuff but the rest is basically the same.. You can never have too many samplers!!
what about launching, say, slices in one track of the octatrack from the circuit pads? and would that pass velocity info too? this could actually help me a good deal...
I bought Arturia Beatstep Pro and then realised how midi in Roland Sp-404sx works. Also tried this variant but I need 2 sequencers for the synth, and drum sequencer can't work on Roland as it should be. Yeah, very strange decision not to make banks as changing patterns and divide them in 2 channels.
Haha, yea it stumped me for a bit too. But then again when the SP came out midi sequencing wasn’t too huge so maybe it got a little overlooked. Who knows
More interesting usage I thought of - fully sampled 60-keys synth with midi keyboard controlling it and if sequencing from computer - you can reach beats and various samples on 1 channel and sampled packs of 12-keys basses on the other all at once (also weird 'cause midi notes must be half-tone away if it is set from C to B).
Which version of the circuit would be best to buy for a similar setup? Tracks or Rhythm? I want to sequence some of the samples I’ve chopped on the 404 into some nice arrangements
Hey I am trying to do exactly this with my TR8S but cannot seem to get them to communicate at all, anyone able to guide my through the process of that specific drum machine and the SP404SX?
Hi Enrique, brief question: I noticed @04:21 that when you pressed C Key on Circuit the SP lit Pad 2. Shouldn´t it light Pad 1? I mean SP Pad 1 is not "equivalent" to Circuit C Key? (like C=1, C#=2, D=3, D#=4... and so on) Thanks in advance. Saludos desde Chile! P.S.: Great Channel!
Que onda Ricky love your tutorials and your Music!!! I have one 404sx , wich one do you recomend to be the partner the novation circuit or digitakt may be a electribe 2? Gracias paz
I haven't used the 404 but have been curious about it since a lot of ppl seem to love it - curiously though - do you have an E2 - it seems like if all you are doing with the circuit is ising the drums and not the nova engine which is more it's strength an electribe E2 could be better with the same setup since if you flip the osc to input you won't use any voices and have arguably a better drum machine with more parts since using midi channel 1 and 2 would only be on parts one and 2 and you would still have 14 drums or synths to play with -
This is a great vid! I'm currently checking out the Circuit. But I'm wondering in the meantime if my old Korg Er-1 could sequence pads on the 404 in much the same way? 🤔
One feature I would love to see in the future of Circuit is individual bpms per session. If it's already possible please correct me, cause otherwise I have to use my Digitakt for different session tempos. That would be dope. Also loving my 404 and circuit combo. Battery powered beats are a special kind of freedom 👍
Data Strain Music you technically can you just need to pause it first then switch sessions then press play haha. But if you do not pause it and the sequencer is still running when you switch sessions it will keep the tempo of the previous session
Enrique Martinez That's what that video showed haha. Good to know! Before my technique was hitting the next session, using tap tempo, and then triggering the session again. This occasionally sounds good, but not often haha. Thanks man I appreciate it! Keep up with the good work!
hmm the short answer is no. BUT you can semi-fake it. just make sure that the gate information is set to end when the next note is played. I hope that makes sense, haha.
Quick question, would you be able to use the new Roland MC 101 in the same way as the SP 404 (sx, or a, they are the same unit) via Midi (Midi Out of Circuit, to Midi In of MC 101 iirc, idk) or should I ignore the MC 101 & get a SP 404a? (both are battery powered.)
totally, when powering on Circuit, hold down the Shift button - then you'll have access to your midi settings. The two bottom right pads should light up blue or something. the bottom right pad is your midi clock SEND toggle, make sure thats dim and it will stop sending clock to your SP404 which makes it start the sequence
do you know if i can use a volca to sequence a 202 or at least lock it to a grid? im having so much trouble figuring out how to make my synths and samplers all play nice together.
I've used my MPC500 to sequence the 202. I don't do a lot of midi but I know a lot of cats use the MPC1000 as the master sequencer for their set ups with a lot of success. Very capable and very tight.
Hi Ricky - great video thank you for sharing. Just hooked up my SP and circuit today. Any ideas why the pads on circuit only play a few of the pads of the SP? I'm sure there must be an issue in the midi set up but I followed it just as you showed in the video so I'm confused. It's like the pads on the SP are all jumbled up on the circuit so I can only play a few per octave and then some but not all of them are on another octave - just weird. Would appreciate any help you can give as this set up looks awesome and I'd love to give them a spin. Thanks
No, i mention in the video that one "instrument" or "synth" on Circuit can actually reach every pad on all of the First Banks, Then Synth 2 is utilizing all of the Secondary Banks pads
Hope you enjoy the video! See below incase you're tired of my ramblings :P
What you need @1:00
The routing @1:23
Main event @3:20
Your videos are great to watch. Love the tempo and focus!
I finally have the sp404sx to join my circuit.both units are great on their own, but together they are just wuuaaaarr. You can not, do not have fun!
haha, thanks superossi! yea it's hard to unplug them from one another now.. They almost make a simple studio side by side
Enrique Martinez please PLEASE do a 404 electribe video
Enrique Martinez alright I’m trying to set my KORG ES1 to my 404 but It’s not letting me use the 404 FX ?? Idk why
What's up bro! It was pleasure meeting you at Moogfest 2018! Still working on connection all my Novation geat! haha!
Now this is how every tutorial should be. Thanks Enrique
Rus! thanks man, having fun with these glad they're being enjoyed :)
Cool, more setup/combo oriented videos would be great! Not many people out there are showing how gear can be used together/possible set up combinations.
Thanks Alex, that's actually a good idea! If you get a moment, i made another video showing my live setup!
ua-cam.com/video/u28Apj_Oq8A/v-deo.html
I just got a novation circuit to pair with my sp404sx, pattern sequencing when making beats but I am in love with the sp404sx sound and FX. Thanks to this video I realized I can have both!!

i had a feelign thats how that worked cool
Another hundreds of dollars purchasing decision due to Ricky. Bought the Circuit back in December. Now I'm getting the SP404sx delivery on the way!
Man, they were THAT similar? Glad I stuck with my SX
300 ish? Where? I bought mine new from Japan because the used were all in the $500's
God Worden yeah, what’s up with that? I better buy one new, every time I look for a used one I end up buying something else 😂😂🤔
Used prices can be weird cause your expected to pay for nostalgia and things like that sometimes, also people are greedy and expect to use it until they realize it's not a magic flute that does all the work for you and they expect to break even a year and a half later or think it's value went up just being in their possession. lol
Well, the paint job and some new factory samples. Still not worth close to $200.
I literally just bought these because this setup is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the great video man very informative
I just got my circuit a week ago and I'm in love .
just started messing with this setup and its super fun but wanted to point out, the 404 - at least 404a which i have - receives incoming midi starting on note 46 (meaning that's the midi note for pad A1), which maps to somewhere kinda random on the circuit in chromatic mode, basically in the middle of the octaves which unfortunately aren't super clearly marked. just a heads up for anyone who was also confused by where the 404 samples "start" when using circuit to sequence, it not like "bottom note of circuit = A1 on 404" which would ideal at least to my brain
wondering if u could do an update on this set up given circuits firmware updates. imagining it expands the possibilities w the SP
wow these videos are some of the most practical out there.
Sweet. I sequence my SP-404sx with a zaquencer, but it’s the same principle. Great combo.
powerful information, need the circuit to make this combo with my SP
You have great tuts. Always learning something from you. Thanks for this.
Woo! Glad they helped you out.
“You have great tuts” That could have gone horribly wrong had auto correct had its way
Still relevant after all these years! Can get used Circuit and Sp404 under $500 easy.
fantastic video, man! Got sp404 and was wondering what to do with it. Already have the circuit, so this was perfect. Can't wait to jam
bam bam, get it done Simon! Thanks for wathcing.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. I have a 404 and an OP-Z and was wondering how to get them to work together. Thanks!
Hey! I know this is an older comment, but how does the combo with the op-z work? Interested in getting an op-z since it came out
@@joelgarner3819 I can sequence sample triggers from the 404 with the OP-Z
Nice, Enrique! Thanks for the video tutorial i really broke my brain with just this possibility to connect a MIDI conversation with this two devices.
Opening up more of the power of Circuit. Great tutorial.
Thanks George! Never stop exploring!
5:39 I didn't know the Circuit remember the last note that you can use to duplicate across. I'm learning some valuable things from your videos. Thanks for the tip!
yea man! That was actually one of the first videos i did. Solely focused on that beautiful duplicate button haha.
"of course youre gonna need chill vibes"" i love it hahahaha
How else would you make this work? haha
i've been waiting for someone to make a video with 404 and a sequencer, I was thinking about getting a beatstep or something, but this looks cool too!
Enrique I've been hooked on your videos.
I get the sp404 to join the circuit in the next few days, so this fits in perfect.thanks
niiiice, let me know how it goes!
Do you known something about a click noise when playing( only when pressing a pad at the start) samples on the circuit?
so you're saying circuit has a click sound when playing back samples in the drum 1, 2, 3, or 4 sections? That might be the samples inside have a sharp attack sound. or are you hearing the click on the SP?
it is only the circuit when hitting the buttons, the samples are smooth. And yes, only drumsection, synths are fine.i tried the samples in ableton and no clicks, so the noise comes from the circuit.:(
This is an amazing setup, great video thanks
I like how you call it the poor mans even though the two gear combined probably cost more that the sx
there is no difference between the two except the color scheme and the crapola samples that came with it. the midi compatability can be upgraded in any sx unit. it was a cash grab on rolands part
i wish they'd bring back the sp-555s 4x4 pad scheme and velocity sensitivity.
Oooof. What a slick setup.
I think i love you!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!
joder estaba mirando pillarme una sp 404 y viendo esto me dan ganas eh? buenisimo! y encima buen complemento para mi circuit :D thnx!
This was a great vid. I know your a synth guy but Man can you make more vids where you use these two machines together.
Dope as always!!
This is has been my go to set up for a while (got a few vids on my channel) I'm thinking of adding a Mono Circuit to this chain, let's see what happens ;)
Nice combo! Yep, SP 404-SX is basically the same as 404A from what I've read. 404A comes with SD card full of samples, new color scheme.
Exactly.
Big ups on this vid, well handy to know, will be trying this out
Nice! Let me know how it turns out Adam! What'll you be using to sequence your SP?
whats the diference between the sx and the A if they do the same.....
Great video Enrique!
Can you do a video like this where you pair the 404 with the digitakt? Pretty sure that's going to be my Sunday in the morning.
Nice explanation and demo!
So cool idea man! Respect from Russia. I have 404sx too🤘😜
Big up! SP's for life! haha
Hi, just finding this video..
Could I do the same with Akai Fire sequence midi controller for FL studio ? I'm curious I don't have a sp404 and I love what it has to offer from what I see
That's cool. Subscribed!
What wire called and Also do I have to press any settings on my sp404
Good stuff
Same setup thx for the tutz
Yea man no sweat! Got some music up somewhere?
Great tutorial, man. Quick question: why do we need to route the circuit audio back though the 404? Is there no way of using the 404's effects on the samples if they've been triggered externally?
why? to sample it of course. and yes thats what 404 is for four eyes
Any chance you could do another jam using these two together? Maybe throw in the digitone too.
Nice video!
Why does rca have to go from circuit output to sp input and can I do this with standard 404
Circuit Output to RCA input of 404 to use the effects of the 404. Yes you can use the OG (one with the CF Card). I use mine with a different sequencer, and have so with the Circuit as well.
Very good review! Thank you for sharing this!
Love this awesome
Notice that pad one on circuit triggered pad 2 on SP404. That’s what’s annoying about this! A while back I tried this with Digitakt and SP404, but the pads don’t line up with triggers on SP.
Could a "Sample" be a backing track for a live band set? So I could use the Novation to trigger the backing track & then send a click which is in time out it's headphone jack?
Great video quality! Inspiring for us at the Phil Studio! :)
ive got one coming this week ,this vid was useful as i might also use circuit to trigger it.
i guess that the channel1 , 2 thing is a way to spread 60 notes / 120 notes (12 pads x 10 banks ?) equally as hitting 120 notes on one midi channel is a little ' impossible ' ? .
as 2 x channels with 6 note poly also matches the 12 note poly on sp404 it pairs up well , though it would remove ability to use synth noises.
I saw coffee and sp's... subscribed
Thanks Jovaughan!
killed it dude.
Thanks Riley! Glad you enjoyed it
Great tutorial, thanks Enrique!
No worries Mick! Glad you found it helpful
Mr. Enrique, You make everything look so simple and easy. Like your technic, I have a Novation Circuit and never got around to use it because it seems hard for me.Hope to pick your brain if I can to learn from your great knowledge.
Hmm. If so, can you sample on the fly what comes from Cercuit?
The concept work...in the beginig i use a boss dr boss drum box in midi...
what are the differences between the SX and A??
Amazing! Have you tested on the drum channels of Circuit?
Can you try other sequencers with sp404sx? Like beatstep, pro or not, if you have those...
cause I would like to use my Circuit with both synths.

Enrique Martinez Thanks! In the end i thought too about polyphony, now that 1.7 firmware will add "microsteps" to the synths too! I guess i just need a Maxi Circuit if they ever do that lol
MegaCircuit.. haha jk. Yea 1.7 is going to be crazy..
My circuit upon power up only has synth 1 n drum 3&4 lit up, is it still synched properly if this is the case?
wow, I just recently have been looking into the 404sx because I thought the circuit might be able to sequence it. Gotta have it now, I have a 303
Nice! does the 303 have a midi in? I'm not too familiar with that one.
sure does! it's the older, vinyl grittier, compact flash version of the 404 but I bet the same method can be applied
A bass station II, sp404sx and minilogue all be sequenced by one circuit a midi thru box, right?
technically yes, but you'll find that depending on what midi channels you have set on the synths and SP one of the devices will be sharing midi notes, or being layered.
Hey Ricky, really appreciate all the videos dude. Wondering if you knew if the beatstep pro might be able to sequence the sp404a? Thanks.
really cool. I was going SP in the Fall, then a friend gave me a great deal for an OT and I went for it. Sometimes I think I'd be better off with the SP, the OT is cool but man...feels like being back in school :)

Incredible. Would you be able to accomplish something similar with the Octotrack or Digitakt? Using them as a sample bank ?
technically yea! It might take a little setting up though. Also, i'm almost certain you can use either the Octa or Digi to do the same to the SP-404
what about launching, say, slices in one track of the octatrack from the circuit pads? and would that pass velocity info too? this could actually help me a good deal...
awesome , thanks for all the help Enrique!
Yeah this would be really handy, I'm going to try with the Bastl MicroGranny too
Big waste of time homie! Both elektron machines have better sequencers than circuit
brilliant, thanks a lot, bro!!!
Yea man! let me know how it goes
i will, tha!
Awesome!
Nice one.
thank you for the video. somehow it made me to think that I should study my FL studio first.)
Nice one!!
Thanks Jerome! you're the best, haha.
Which version of the circuit would be best to buy for a similar setup? Tracks or Rhythm? I want to sequence some of the samples I’ve chopped on the 404 into some nice arrangements
i like the OG circuit the best
Hi, very interesting! Would this work on the sp303?
Is it possible to do this but with Digitakt instead of the Circuit? Can't figure it out and it's horribly frustrating.
Hey I am trying to do exactly this with my TR8S but cannot seem to get them to communicate at all, anyone able to guide my through the process of that specific drum machine and the SP404SX?
Where did you bought your sp-404 ??
Cool idea! Does the Circuit always auto-quantize or can you turn that off?
Hey guys, can i use novation launchpad as an external sequencer for sp 555?
This is genius
Glad you thought so, haha!
Can you do this with any drum machine i.e model:cycles or mfb-522
Hi Enrique, brief question:
I noticed @04:21 that when you pressed C Key on Circuit the SP lit Pad 2.
Shouldn´t it light Pad 1?
I mean SP Pad 1 is not "equivalent" to Circuit C Key? (like C=1, C#=2, D=3, D#=4... and so on)
Thanks in advance.
Saludos desde Chile!
P.S.: Great Channel!
Que onda Ricky love your tutorials and your Music!!! I have one 404sx , wich one do you recomend to be the partner the novation circuit or digitakt may be a electribe 2? Gracias paz
Does this works for an Sp 404a as well?
Would this work with the circuit mono station?
It technically could but you'd be limited to playing a single note at a time, rather than up to 6 that the circuit can do.

Funny enough I just found this neat trick to do just what I wanted to accomplish for anyone who's interested!

Enrique Martinez That's what that video showed haha. Good to know! Before my technique was hitting the next session, using tap tempo, and then triggering the session again. This occasionally sounds good, but not often haha. Thanks man I appreciate it! Keep up with the good work!
Nice Video! Fresh! The 404A was the biggest let down. :(
You're telling me.. haha i feel you on that.
Great video mate! Really clear genuine and down to earth. Thanks a million 🙏🏻
Nice tutorial, thanx. Is it possible to get "mute group" effect with circuit controlling 404? - one sample being muted when you hit another one
hmm the short answer is no. BUT you can semi-fake it. just make sure that the gate information is set to end when the next note is played. I hope that makes sense, haha.
Enrique Martinez thanx. yes that what I was trying to ask - to fake it.
is there a "monophonic sequencer mode" on circuit where notes don't overlap?
ticketstomars Circuit Mono Station has this, but Circuit is always 6 notes even if the synth patch you’ve selected is monophonic.
thanx
Awesome. Wondering how easy it would be to use sugar bytes turnado on the iPad with the circuit. Anyone tried this?
Thanks . Is it possible to use different midi channel of sp404sx or sp404A from a Squarp Pyramid ?
yep! you can set the channels accordingly on either device.
When I start the circuit, the sp404 starts also the sequencer with one of the sequences I have on it, is there a way to avoid this?
totally, when powering on Circuit, hold down the Shift button - then you'll have access to your midi settings. The two bottom right pads should light up blue or something. the bottom right pad is your midi clock SEND toggle, make sure thats dim and it will stop sending clock to your SP404 which makes it start the sequence
Oh is see, thanks @@RickyTinez, love your videos
No worries! Thanks for the support. Let me know how it goes and if you got it working
do you know if i can use a volca to sequence a 202 or at least lock it to a grid? im having so much trouble figuring out how to make my synths and samplers all play nice together.
Thanks
Mk Wise Sounds like your Circuit isn’t set to chromatic mode.
Adam Gough sorted. Thanks!
How would you use the circuit as a glorified sequencer? Would each instrument on the circuit sequence a different bank?
No, i mention in the video that one "instrument" or "synth" on Circuit can actually reach every pad on all of the First Banks, Then Synth 2 is utilizing all of the Secondary Banks pads
