Lionel Wilson was Sidney's voice from 1958 through '62; during the final year of production (1962-'63), Dayton Allen [using his "Hugh Herbert" impression] succeeded him, with Wilson {and Allen} voicing the other animals. This one was produced in 1963.
First time I've seen this cartoon in over 50 years. Loved the lion' voice, dipped in sulfuric acid. And then, several years ago, I saw the 1930's movie "Lady for a Day" with Ned Sparks as "Happy". That's when I realized: THAT'S who they based the lion's voice on! (He had died about 10 years before, and had retired from the business 10 years before that.) I've been a Ned Sparks fan ever since!
I remember these--even as little kids we weren't that thrilled w/ these. But thanks for posting it! I associate them w/ Sugar Bear toons for some reason.
@ Iwantherboots & acholl980. Thou are both correct. During the first few episodes where Sidney spoke with the "Ed Wynn"- like voice, the giraffe character was called "Carol". But later when Sidney's voice became higher and whinier, courtesy of Lionel Wilson, the giraffe was renamed,"Cleo". The latter name was still retained when Sidney spoke with the "Hugh Herbert"- like voice, courtesy of Dayton Allen. And regardless of which name, she still spoke with that "Carol Channing"- like lisp.

One of my favorate cartoon of the rockin' 60's, a funny classic. I love it A fine mess Sidney got into. Ha Ha. I remember Sidney in 1966-67.

That Mr. Rhino is one cranky fella!

Love elephants
Used to watch these on Wallace and Ladmo. Want more.
Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy elephant!
What do you think of a rhinoceros has a largest horn stuck on his nose?
Sidney has a different voice and personality here.
Most of the old catoons were like that for some reason
Cleo didn't say it in this one so I will "Poor Sydney"
Directed by Art Bartsch
Ah, right.
Louie Nye?
Elephants weigh far more than 1,940 lbs. Try 14,000 lbs. That's how much Jumbo weighed at Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Are these still being aired?
Are they on Video?
Does Dayton Allen do the voice of all the characters in this cartoon?
No, Cleo, Stanley, and Mr. Rhino are voiced by Lionel Wilson
whho's he?@@Klook6950Extras
Man... they don't make cartoons like that anymore...and I'm greatful for it. YUK! I like Terrytoons and all, but clearly not their best work.
I remember Sydney having "gayer" voice - and being quite paranoid.
O
Is it me, or does Sidney sound a bit Jewish here?
The weakest of the 19 Sydney the Elephant cartoons! My rating *½
Does anyone mentioned that Carol the giraffe sounds like Carol Channing?
Originally, she was named "Carol". In time, to avoid any lawsuits, she became "Cleo" (but kept the real Carol's vocal inflections).
