Im 76 years old so when i think back to seeing FZ and the Mothers Live this is exactly how i see FZ in my minds eye,the big moustache and wide imperial with the wild long hair ,when its time for me to take the big dirt nap i pray ive lead the kinda life which will allow me to attend that great gig in the sky with FZ conducting.

America needs Frank Zappa now more than we did in the 70's ,I really miss Frank alot ,following Zappa tours across Michigan ,Ohio and Indiana was my wife and I's summer time fun from 1969 when I finished my final combat tour in Vietnam to the 88 tour ,he was so good to me that he signed all my Original masters albums and the YCDTOS collectors CD anvil case along with hand signed publicity photos from various tours ,my pride & joy is my Overnight Sensation album where I got every Mother to autograph with Frank being the last in 1992 ,his wife was so nice to me on the phone because she remembered when my wife & I danced onstage with Vito .

I was at this festival all weekend it was like 20 mins from my house. That weekend was Frank Zappa, Ten Years After, Led Zeppelin, Tull, BS&T, Sly and Family Stones, Buddy Guy, and Ike & Tina Review plus so many more. Frank Zappa played at a woodshop section totally awesome. Check out the video totally an awesome time.

Funny... When I was a kid, I always thought of Frank as our patron saint to intellectual freedom. Not to mention he could do ANYTHING musical. I saw him on Steve Allen's show a few times and he was always so far ahead of EVERYBODY!! And this proves it again! Thanks so much for this!

Good to see Jimmy again, and Don with some hair left (and Kanzus playing tambourine, the crazy guy he is!).
Great historic document, though incomplete (and one of the few with close ups of Frank's goldtop Les Paul in its final H/S/P90 incarnation, before it was stolen).

@@paulinebutcherbird That’s pretty interesting, considering that as great as Johnny and BB are/were they’re still playing nothing but three chord tunes strictly within a musical style, while Zappa’s music was completely its own thing, and the musicians that played it had to be incredibly skilled and adaptable to play such demanding music. I can’t even listen to blues anymore after playing it in Chicago for 20 years, it’s just boring to me now, but I never get tired of listening to Frank.

@@1965JB Your comment fits with what I say in my book. Many rock stars in 1960s looked at Frank as the rock stars' rock star. In other words, it takes a musician, such as yourself, to fully appreciate his music. All I am able to do is acknowledge that he seems to stand alone as a composer who could write and perform in all genres of music from doo-wop, jazz, blues, rock'n'roll, satire, politcal commentary, and classical. No one else, as far as I know has had that range.

A review of the **1969** Boston Globe Jazz Festival exists at www.afka.net/Articles/1969-05_Down_Beat.htm I was there! And believe me, I know what year that was... Zappa & the Mothers (plus Roland Kirk) blew the place away, doing material much like this clip at Newport later the same year. I've never been able to find any audio or video recording of the Boston show, and I kind of doubt any that recording was made. But perhaps we'll all get lucky.

Im so sure that its a cover of down by the river by neil young because its the same 2 chord progression and upon looking their names up together i found out that frank actually did list him as one of his contemporaries and inspirations. Its surprising to me because ive always seen him as mainly a jazz cat. its weird for me to imagine him listening to sabbath or something you know? anyways someone lmk if they think its something else.

This was before Neil Young did that song but, as it's claimed in that documentary "The Freak Out list" (I think), Frank liked to include signatures from classical pieces so, if not here, I'm sure he did it lots of other times with pop bands as a little inside thing him & the band enjoyed.
