Dire Straits was a British band and the song is about war in general but the Falklands war between the UK and Argentina is particular. Dire Straits had a lot of hit records in 70's/80's with "Sultans of Swing" probably the biggest hit song. If you react to Sultans of Swing - be sure to watch the "Alchemy Live" performance - one of the best live performances ever. Mark Knopfler is the singer, song writer and lead guitarist. He is a guitar virtuoso and plays his guitar with incredible tone and emotion.
HI Steph, i´m an nearly 60y. old German and do my time in German Army in ´84 and ´85 during the Cold War...... All my Comrade´s and I were flashed about this Song! It´s a timeless Masterpiece for all Mankind!
Mark knopfler and David Gilmour are 2 guitarists that prove you don’t need to play fast . Music is about the transference of emotions and nobody’s guitars speak louder than Mark’s or David’s .
This song is over 40 years old and was written at the time of the Falklands war between the UK and Argentina. Unofficial anthem for the British military for decades. I have a friend who survived the sinking of H.M.S Sheffield during the war. Tears him apart. Dire Straits were Princess Diana's favourite band. They split up a LONG time ago. Lead guitarist and singer, Mark Knoppfler is now 74 and has just sold a few of his guitars by auction, raising millions of £'s for charity.
Hear that brother, I was in the Falklands and each time I hear it I hear my friends again. A private soldier wrote to his mother from Gettysburg after the battle, he wrote "A bunch of us came to Gettysburg, we didn't all go home. If your weren't there you will never understand". To me that and this song are the best words to describe how it leaves you.
'There's so many different worlds, So many different suns, And we have just one world, But we live in different ones.' is so powerful... and sadly so true these days.
It was written during and inspired by the Falklands war. It's since been rerecorded and the proceeds went to veterans of the Falklands war so, it's inspired by but not actually about the war so everyone's correct😊
For many people the frontman (Mark Knopfer) is one of the best guitarists in rock history. You should watch Dire Straits - Walk of Life (Live at the On Every Street Tour). It's such a banger and good mood song.
Dire Straits weren't American either. It was released in 1985. The video clip won Grammy for best video in 1987. Mark Knopfler's Brothers In Arms Gibson Les Paul just sold for at auction £592,000 a couple days ago Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler's solo work is phenomenal. Check out "Brother in Arms" live at Wembley Stadium 1988 Nelson Mandela concert. Going Home (Mark's theme from the movie Local Hero), Sultans of Swing (Alchemy live), Tunnel of Love, Romeo & Juliet, Down to the Waterline, Lady Writer, Skate Away, Telegraph Road, Love Over Gold, Walk of Life
Congrats on discovering one of the best bands of all time. For your next reaction with Dire Straits, check out their Alchemy live performance of "SULTANS OF SWING". Prepare to be blown away.
The video technique is called rotoscoping, where they hand draw over film. It was developed in the 1880s. That's not a typo, 1880s. It is very labor intensive, making it expensive, but the end result is worth it. Another famous video that uses it is Take On Me by Ah-ha. Much more up beat, I would suggest you give that one a listen, the official video to get the effect.
You just witnessed greatness, Dire Straits are British and the songs based around the Falkland Islands conflict with Argentina in 1982, however it means so much to military service people around the world. As a band these guys were in another league and ive not heard a guitarist make me emotional as much as Mark Knopfler he's a genius Try Alchemy album from themTelegraph road or Sultans of swing prepare to be take to another musical experience possibly the greatest live performance ever
mark Knopfler was able to announce his soul in this song, not many people can do this world wide, only other for me is Van Morrsion and to a lesser extent Eric Clapton.
I've always watched you Steph for your Sohyang reactions, but when I saw you were covering a Dire Straits hit with "Brothers in Arms" I had to tune in once again. Congrats on choosing one of the truly great Classic Rock bands with Mark Knopfler on lead guitar. He is one of the finest guitarists of the era and they had so many hits! Everyone who knows anything about electric guitar knows Mark is one of the very best. I suggest you react to their "Sultans of Swing," "Down to the Waterline" and "Water of Love" from their first album. You are obviously only now starting to delve into the Classic Rock era and you are about to start a musical journey that will be more rewarding than any other you have undergone. Only Sohyang can compare, so now you know how much joy you are in for! 🤯👀🎸🎸😉💖🛸
Thank you for your reaction to this song. As other commenters have said, it was released in the aftermath of the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina in 1982 and is a lament for the death, injury and destruction that results from war. Dire Straights is a British band, Mark Knopfler being the singer, song writer and lead guitar. He has been a favourite guitarist and song writer for me ever since I first heard Dire Straights in the late 1970's. I recommend listening to more of their music, I don't think you will be disappointed.
just to say this is one of the best replies i have read describing the song. With this song he not only commemorated those who died during the Falkland war, he commemmorates the death of all who have fallen in war, and how senseless it is.
The animation in the video was done using a technique called "rotoscope" - the technique is basically done by tracing from film footage frame by frame. The animation was done by the same person who did the video "Take On Me" by Ah-Ha. (also using rotoscope) You really can't go wrong with Dire Straits in general, It is hard to explain, if you know Mark's guitar work you will recognise it, even though all of Dire Straits' hits are very different from each other. Songs I'd recommend: Sultans of Swing (Alchemy version, the reason I recommend this is that when the Studio album was made they didn't have a keyboardist, the addition of keyboards makes a huge difference)) Telegraph Road (Probably Alchemy version, but studio was good too) Money For Nothing (The video may be a bit cheesy today, but the CGI was absolutely state of the art at the time... so I would recommend the official video here) Romeo and Juliet Tunnel of Love Latest Trick I could recommend many many more including some of Mark's solo stuff, but these are a good place to start.
Dire Straits create very different moods with their music. Try "Sultans of Swing" or "Telegraph Road" for a very different vibe and more superb guitar work
Agree with those 2, both are "stories" based on real life. "Sultan's of Swing" was inspired by a visit to a pub on a rainy day (I think Mark said it was in Greenwich - pronounced Gren'itch) where a live band was playing (and yes, they were called "Sultan's of Swing". "Telegraph Road" was inspired it seems by a book Mark read, a biography or autobiography, of some guy who left the city and built a home in the wile, but the city grew, and engulfed his wilderness. Telegraph Road, also known as US Highway 24, is a real thing. So yes, listen to (even if you don't react to) those 2. I'm an guy (70, soon to be 71) but I enjoy hearing and watching interviews on UA-cam of the bands I grew up with through the 1960s, 70, 80 (Jethro Tull, Genesis, Dire Straits, Moody Blues, and a host of others). I'm sorry, I was late to getting into metal bands like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin etc., only in the last 5 - 10 years, I guess I wasn't ready for it when I was younger. Now I'm retired and have time to explore some of the music I missed.
I was prepared to tell you things like "Do you even play a guitar?", "Do you even know that this is about the Falkland Wars?"...but then you said "His voice is like almost crying"...and I remebered, that musc is univeral. Cool video, got my vote!

Also, this song is inspired by and talks about a British war, in the Falkland Islands 1982. Quite close to you, comparatively. I was there, by the way, in HMS HERMES.
Welcome to Dire Straits. A band I grew up with. Mark Knopfler is widely recognised as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. You should try Telegraph Road and Sultans of Swing from the Alchemy concert. I was there on the night of the latter recording.
You’re probably going to find that the majority of the best 70s/80s rock is from UK. If you want to try another Dire Straits I suggest Telegraph Road (live version from Alchemy Tour).
Every time i hear this song i tear up. Marks guitar is so restrained.... so mornfull . Telegraph road was one of Dire Straits best.....such great story telling.... such great musicianship.
Now I would like to recommend that you and any of your other Viewers watch Home Free's acappella version of this song. It and they are quite something. From Dire Straits "Sultan's of Swing" Alchemy Live version so it's not over too soon.
It was written in 1982 (the same year as Britains involvement in the Falklands war against Argentina) Mark Knopfler re released it in 2007 to raise funds for the veterans of that war that he said were still suffering from the war. Interesting fact: This was the FIRST single ever released on CD
I koow late to comment, but love the reaction, live also in a country in peace (Sweden) but with some struggles, and they get bigger. I wish people listen to this more and think a bit more before acting. Thank you for a beautiful reaction
You will love the storyteller (with text, voice but especially with instruments) Mark Knopfler Dire Straits. The song is inspired by the Argentina UK War.
Mark just auctioned off his guitar collection a few days ago at Christie’s of London. Huge interest surrounded the event. Steph, do yourself a favor and pull up their finest live show called, Dire Straits On The Night. You’ll find their best version of “Brothers in Arms” there. Try the show’s opening song, “Calling Elvis.” It showcases each band member perfectly, right from the jump. Recorded digitally in Nimes, France 1992. (side note, their album Brothers In Arms was one of the first digitally released CD’s back in the day) Saw this tour. Still think this recording was their best performance and post production effort. Regards
This is not New band you hare this is Real music 🎵🎶🎵🎶 music from my time beautiful ❤️❤️ I'm a brother in arms so I understand the music 🎵🎶 touch the heart ❤❤❤❤
Hi there. I just discovered your channel. Great reaction. My favorite performance of all time is this song Brothers In Arms live from DIRE STRAITS Live "On The Night" 1993. His Pensa guitar is even more prominent and even more emotional. And the extended instrumental at the end is just jawdropping. Also recommend Private Investigations from the same concert. It's so haunting. Anyway all the best. Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
Ms. Gard, hello from the UK. As pointed out by many others Dire Straits are British, as am I and this comment. It is best to leave Americans to their guns, Bibles, serial killers, ever so super Super Bowl and feeble grasp / command of the English language. It amuses me to watch them try and struggle with it. Everyone was correct about Mark Knopfler as well. I'm glad you were touched by the song. It is hauntingly sad.
Best to leave stereotypes at the door, cousin, cuz “we’re fools to make war with our brothers in arms.” Americans, such as myself, think and feel deeply, and appreciate a man like Mark, who speaks to us all. ❤
Cuz, where were you you in 1940 when we faced the full might of the Nazi military machine alone in our darkest hour? You were relaxing with feet up until the Japanese paid you a visit. You were hardly brothers in arms cuz, nephew, niece, whatever. No offence intende. @@garysosa5592
What can I say that hasnt already been said. I was in High School when this band was quite popular in the U.S. i really enjoyed their music then and appreciate it even more now.
Mais perto de casa do que você pensa, Steph Gard from Brasil. A composição tinha raízes em a guerra da Grã-Bretanha com a Argentina pela posse de Las Malvinas !
War sucks but we need to appreciate those that have suffered through it in the past, and still suffer it, in order to defend the freedoms that you enjoy today.
a classic that leaves no one indifferent. (and the fact that you are Brazilian does not mean that you are far from "America". This country tries to interfere in everyone's affairs, no matter what part of the world they are in😊)
Musicas como esta lembram que muita gente morre não por ideologias mas pelo irmão que esta ao lado. steph, allows me to correct: Brazil participated in WWII, a FAB detachment, which was very important in Italy and many stayed there. Unfortunately, people over time think that wars are distant in time and space, unfortunately it always leaves scars. Songs like this remind us that many people die not for ideologies but for the brother who is next to them.
Although this is one of my favorite songs in guitar terms, although incredibly beautiful actually is a lot less complex than many of their others songs. Perfect for this song but so many amazing work of one of the greatest guitarists. The album "brothers in arms" was the first to sell 1 million CD's. At that time CD's were pretty expensive so it was quite a feat.
I believe Dire Straits is bigger now than they were back when. The SACD market has really boomed in the last decade. Dire Straits is probably the highest selling artist on SACD.
Thanks for the great review of a band, that always seemed to miss out on the stardom they deserved. This is one of the most haunting songs ever written. There are only a few songs, that pull on the heart strings about war and what soldiers go through. If you loved this, can I recommend Motorhead's '1916', It's a world away from what motorhead normally sound like. Give it a go, You'll love it (especially if you see the version with the video).
Steph, pretty much everything from Dire Straits is spectacular. Mark Knopfler is widely regarded as one of the best guitarists of all time. Check out the Alchemy Live versions of Telegraph Road and Sultans of Swing. The lyrics in the former are among the best they did. Happy listening!
Mark Knopfler - Brothers in Arms live in Berlin 2007, that for me is the best version, his voice and guitar playing improved with age. He is British not American 😊
I wish people would have suggested you the live version at Mandelas party. If you like the guitar here, you would absolutely love it on the live version. The guitar solo there is mind blowing.
The video represents the war British fought with Argentina over an island off the cost of Argentina. The water in the video represents the ocean the British soldiers had to cross to fight that war.
As said Dire Straits are British. Don't think it's about the Falklands war just about the futility of war 'We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms' .
Check out Pink Floyd "When the Tigers Broke Free" Roger Waters father was killed in WW2 while Roger was just a baby. This song sums up the reality of every father killed by war, and the fact that someone decides who will likely live and who will likely die.
They are not americans neither, they are British. Well in fact you are american 🙂. America is from Tierra de fuego to Bering sea. No dejéis que Estados Unidos se apropie de todo el continente 🙃. Un saludo desde España.
Thank you for a great review Steph though I must say I checked your Channel and you seem to be awash with a KPop group called Forstella when I was expecting a much wider variety of artists reviewed, have a great weekend, take care and stay safe and well.
Hi there. If you listen to Alchemy live (late 80s) you'll have all the best solos stretched to a sing along audience. By the way Dire straits BRITISH not American. Mark Knopfler on the guitar and vocals. He probably had someone he knew on that conflict between Argentina and England about the Falklands islands 😢 People died
Hi Steph, You are on the right track. PINK FLOYD, dIRE sTRAITS, and LED ZEPPLIN. That is 1 year of learning the History of 60s 70s ans 80s... Hope that helps and keep up the search.....❤
Since you are having a great sense of emotions when it comes to music you need to do "Chris Rea - The Road To Hell 1989 Full Version" !! You are not going to be disappointed :)
Yeah, its got nothing to do with Americans. Its a British band and the song has nothing to do with wars involving the USA. The song is about soldiers generally but more specifically, it was written for British soldiers, who incidentally have a much longer war history than the USA will ever have.
Who’d a thought the country that was around longer, and had more of an imperialistic occupational, colonist history would have a longer military history?
@@tonymalony5242It’s not just a tribute to fallen soldiers on own side. It’s questioning why we wage war on fellow human beings at all when we’re all the same deep down
Girl, you like the guitar so much, you should check out Stevie Ray Vaughan. This particular song was not about American soldiers, it was about British soldiers who served and died in the Falken war. It's understandable that you don't know this and it's okay. Mark Knopfler is British and you should check out more of his band Dire Straits as well.
Je suis toujours étonné d'entendre que des gens ne connaissent pas Dire Straits. Ce groupe est légendaire. Mais , les jeunes ne peuvent pas tout savoir.
Como é brasileira, vou falar em português. Dire Straits é sempre melhor ouvir ao vivo. Vejo que há algumas sugestões de musicas interessantes nos comentários mesmo assim vou deixar as minhas: Sultans of Swing e Telegraph Roadm ouça do Show Alchemy (se bem que todo show é fenomenal). Tunel of Love, ouça a versão Wembley 1985. Brothers in Armsma versão do On the night 1992 é soberba. So Far Away uma das melhores versões é a calipso gravada na Austrália em 1985. A carreira solo de Mark Knofler vale a pena conferir também.
Well in Brazil you have drug wars right, young men and women pitted against each other for a cause they don`t necessarily understand, so you have people killing each other over that stuff. Innocents dying over it, almost civil wars, wars in the Favelas so the song is relevant to you too. Yes this points to a military war, but you`d probably have to go back to Portugal and the Napoleonic wars for that. So it does apply to almost every country on the planet, although specifically about the Falklands conflict I believe, the message is to every nation military or domestic.
Great reaction..Dire straits is better live. You try istening”Sultan of swing” alchemy live version is amazing or “tunnel of love “ wembley live ..so beautiful ❤
Would love to see your reaction to soldiers homecoming video clips, after time away from their families. I'm a tough guy, and every damn video I watched, I shed a tear.

I koow late to comment, but love the reaction, live also in a country in peace (Sweden) but with some struggles, and they get bigger. I wish people listen to this more and think a bit more before acting. Thank you for a beautiful reaction
Love to all our Russian, Ukrainian, Palestinian, and Israeli brothers.
Played this song at my friend's funeral. His fave.
Regards
Your analysis is always absorbing.
I am glad to know how you think.
This is not New band you hare this is Real music 🎵🎶🎵🎶 music from my time beautiful ❤️❤️ I'm a brother in arms so I understand the music 🎵🎶 touch the heart ❤❤❤❤
It is a very deep song but you were sensitive and deep enough to handle it!! Great job!!!
There was this war about the Falklands islands between Argentina and England in the 80s. People died stupidly. This song honours both sides 😢
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
TELEGRAPH ROAD.
That is your next step in the dIRE sTRAITS rabbit hole. 🇦🇺
One of the greatest English bands ever.
Mais perto de casa do que você pensa, Steph Gard from Brasil. A composição tinha raízes em a guerra da Grã-Bretanha com a Argentina pela posse de Las Malvinas !
I agree, the guitar is So Rich. Dire Straits are brilliant artists. I hope you listen to "Your latest trick " another mastetpiece from the same album.
War sucks but we need to appreciate those that have suffered through it in the past, and still suffer it, in order to defend the freedoms that you enjoy today.
thanks Steph, for moi, music is for the emotions you can't express in other ways
a classic that leaves no one indifferent. (and the fact that you are Brazilian does not mean that you are far from "America". This country tries to interfere in everyone's affairs, no matter what part of the world they are in😊)
steph, allows me to correct: Brazil participated in WWII, a FAB detachment, which was very important in Italy and many stayed there.
Beautiful Song, Gorgeous Stephanie
You should always listen to the live version of this band. You should see what Mark Knopfler, free on stage, does with the guitar...
Mark Knopfler - Brothers in Arms live in Berlin 2007, that for me is the best version, his voice and guitar playing improved with age. He is British not American 😊
If you're moved by this version , just try the " On the Night " live version , the best they ever did ...goosebumps guaranteed 😊
Dire Straits is an English band (at least original members).
The guitarist and singer is Mark Knofler. A brilliant guitarist.
As said Dire Straits are British. Don't think it's about the Falklands war just about the futility of war 'We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms' .
It was written about the Falkands War and War in general, even some of the sketches are from film taken during the Falkands War.
Many assume so ,but was much later than that conflict. Just a moving track think of Ukraine at present.@@ianphillips9455
This is to be played at my final day on earth...I want everybody attending to cry!
Check out
Pink Floyd "When the Tigers Broke Free"
Roger Waters father was killed in WW2 while Roger was just a baby.
This song sums up the reality of every father killed by war, and the fact that someone decides who will likely live and who will likely die.
I've always said much love and piece to everyone which is what I believe should be the attitude from us all
They are not americans neither, they are British.
This song is sung from the perspective of a soldier who is dying on the battle field and his fellow soldiers are doing their best to save him. 😢
Hi Steph,
You are on the right track.
PINK FLOYD,
dIRE sTRAITS, and
LED ZEPPLIN.
Any soldier losing a brother in war matters be it what country you come from
Who’d a thought the country that was around longer, and had more of an imperialistic occupational, colonist history would have a longer military history?
Still can't get over that revolutionary war .
SEVENTEEN SEVENTY SIX.
@@rudedogmatYes we can lol. No Brits talk about that
@@tonymalony5242It’s not just a tribute to fallen soldiers on own side. It’s questioning why we wage war on fellow human beings at all when we’re all the same deep down
Beautiful reaction bub❤
Girl,
you like the guitar so much, you should check out Stevie Ray Vaughan.
This particular song was not about American soldiers, it was about British soldiers who served and died in the Falken war. It's understandable that you don't know this and it's okay. Mark Knopfler is British and you should check out more of his band Dire Straits as well.
Saw this band live, twice.
Remember as well he is the one performing in the princess bride ❤
I've always said if we was invaded but an alien force we would all come together
check out their live performance of "Sultans of Swing Alchemy" ..... you'll love it...
One of the Greatest Songs in the Popular Music ...
Homegirl with the stank face in all the right places. Love to see it
Dire Straits never fail to entertain
Como é brasileira, vou falar em português. Dire Straits é sempre melhor ouvir ao vivo. Vejo que há algumas sugestões de musicas interessantes nos comentários mesmo assim vou deixar as minhas: Sultans of Swing e Telegraph Roadm ouça do Show Alchemy (se bem que todo show é fenomenal). Tunel of Love, ouça a versão Wembley 1985. Brothers in Armsma versão do On the night 1992 é soberba. So Far Away uma das melhores versões é a calipso gravada na Austrália em 1985. A carreira solo de Mark Knofler vale a pena conferir também.
Uma das melhores musicas de Todos os tempos e o video é incrível!
Hi from Scotland 🏴 You need to watch Dire Straits-Sultans of Swing- Live at The Alchemy
Would love to see your reaction to soldiers homecoming video clips, after time away from their families. I'm a tough guy, and every damn video I watched, I shed a tear.
