Funny thing, I've been looking to learn the bass, preferably a 5 string. Fieldy is my long-time favorite sound on the bass and instead of his sig K5 I was looking at other 5 strings and am saving up specifically for the D5. I'm happy you did this review and it's made me feel I have made the right decision.
You talking about metal bass reminded me of Cattle Decaps bassist. They play a half step down from standard, and their bassist plays a five string with the entire bass dropped down a half step EXCEPT the 5th string, which is tuned down to somethin crazy like G. So they sound so grindy and brutal because whenever they need to get heavy, their bassist slams on that 5th string. And you can hear it if you really listen to it. Funnily enough their bassist uses ESP as well.
@@jasonstallworth I play bass, but love guitar & and aspire to play it in ur particular style (Traditional Thrash?)... If I had one question, it would be, "What exact pick do you use?" on your 7-string guitar riffage vids? It seems to make a big difference on what I can and can't do with the palm mute stuff. 🤷♂️
@@jasonstallworth I plan on getting their 8 string model but switch out the pickups for some EMG soap bar pickups and the preamp to either a Darkglass or tone monster preamp then it will burn faces lol
Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler created such a wall of sound between the Bass and Guitar. There's a song on Mortification, scrolls of the Megilloth album called Eternal Lamentation, after intro 40 seconds in there's the drum part and then you hear the Bass come in and it really pumps the tone..!! 🎸🍻
It's actually active electronics. The pre-amp is active, the pickups themselves are passive. I play the same bass. I ditched the stock pickups and pre-amp and installed active EMG David Ellefson signature pickups and an EMG bqs active preamp. 18 volts to power everything.
@@jasonstallworth all good man. Manufacturers are misleading when they say that an instrument is active. They don't usually detail what's powered and what's not. Generally when stated "active electronics", is just the pre-amp that's powered. Is not very typical to see pre-amps and pickups both active. Most active powered pickups are only wired to a volume and tone control. I say most lol. I had to wire my setup to 18 volts because at 9 volts, the signal was terrible trying to power the pickups and preamp.
Man o' man! Where can I get that white skull looking thing on top of your monitor stand?BTW, great bass playing. I'm torn between an ESP LTD B-5E or the D-5.

Well, ideally I'd like to have that effect man. But in a small 10x11 studio (and having neighbors) it's not feasible to crank up an amp. So I do rely on virtual amps and effects more than I'd like to admit.
