You have to "study" the structure of the track, just try to record the whole song then check where it would be optimal to use overdrive, and as @shoxerx7406 said, an overdrive is on for 2 measures so you have to keep it in mind too
In music a measure is made up of 4 beats, so 2 measures = 8 beats. These 8 beats you must count them “in rhythm” with the music, sorry for my english it's sometimes really not easy to understand ahah

How do you find the optimal path? I always use overdrive on the parts that I think have the most keys but I don't even get a good score

Most pro players play on 1,5 or 1,75 speed
