I have mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: I love listening to Mike Antonelli whenever he gets the chance to make an appearance on an SoT video. Ranking Coltrane? I can't do it. Giant Steps was the first Coltrane album I ever owned (bought it back in 2004), and it is deserving of its classic status; the technical aspects of it have been well-documented, but even outside of all that, it's a thing of melodic beauty to my ears. GS, Blue Train, Ballads, Olé Coltrane, Africa/Brass, Impressions... I've played these countless times over the years. Ascension? Meditations? I love those, too. Wonderful episode, guys!!!
Thanks for this great episode! It's good to see some jazz on SoT after a while. 1958 is indeed an important year for jazz: Ornette Coleman started his solo career, Sonny Rollins put out important albums, Miles' Milestones, Blakey's Moanin'. Wow Mike, you listened to Coltrane at the age of 11!?! So young and with such a good taste 😀 It's hard to give Top 10, but my top five would be: Love Supreme, Crescent, Village Vanguard, Birdland, Blue Train.
It’s great to see you talking about Coltrane! I’ve listened to a lot of his work, but I’m no expert. My favorite tune of his is the obvious one, “My Favorite Things”. My go- to Coltrane live album is Afro-Blue Impressions, recorded in Berlin and Stockholm in 1963: the classic quartet playing great versions of some of his best-known material. Wonderful stuff. Thanks for the recommendations!

Not enough Coltrane in my library but this will help shape some listening and additions to the library. Most of the few albums I own were discussed between the two of you. Great to see Mike include the John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman album in his top 10. Found that one by accident in a record shop one day and that opened the Coltrane door. Thanks for opening that door a little wider.

Pete, you’re a blessing for us metalheads who are trying to figure out how to get into Jazz. I’ve become a massive Metheny fan in the last year, but haven’t had my itch scratched much by any other Jazz or fusion guys.
As a jazz guy at heart for most of my life, its really nice to see John Coltrane get covered in the channel, when you talk about jazz as a genre, no conversation is ever complete without mentioning John Coltrane who is one of the most important musicians in history and one of the true legends of saxophone Thanks for an amazing show
I do love the Impulse era a lot. I have the box sets of the Quartet on Impulse!, as well as the Atlantic box and even the red Prestige box (16 cds!). I know the albums too and love Blue Train. The one with Kenny Burrell is great, with Freight Trane being a long-standing Favorite. Got into Ole for a while. There are so many. Would be cool to rank his live albums - there are a lot. One Up One Down was a cool one with the quartet. The live A Love Supreme from the deluxe version was nice, the recent live version from last year was not quite as good as the sax was low in the mix. For my number one I have to go with "Crescent". It tends to get overshadowed by "A Love Supreme" but it's just as beautiful and deeply spiritual. Incredible music that is essential listening.
One of the many reasons I love this channel. I love classic rock , metal and am a decades long jazz lover. You cover all my loves …plus the monsters den for good measure. Don’t need to go anywhere else…just stay here all the damn time:)

Wish I caught this when it premiered. Coltrane is the greatest musician of the 20th century. I love all his periods, but as you'll see, I veer towards the wilder side of his catalog. The more he absorbed the music of the world, the better he got (because let's consider the fact that free jazz has a lot of influence from things like Middle Eastern styles and definitely Tibetan ritual music) 1. Digging this Coltrane video. I have a huge stack of his records and still there's a few I didn't have in your rankings. Also nice to see some love for Eric Dolphy, another genius whose life was cut short by ill health. Here's my top ten Eric Dolphy albums: Caribe [with Latin Jazz Quartet] Last Date Here and There Outward Bound Out There Far Cry Conversations The Quest [with Mal Waldron] Live At The Five Spot ~Vol 1 Out To Lunch Honorable mention - any Charles Mingus album that Dolphy plays on
I listened to the second half. I’ve only heard a small number of Coltrane albums, & I’ve only heard them once through, so I certainly wouldn’t try to rank what I’ve heard. I found it interesting that Pete’s list had 3 albums I do like. The self titled Coltrane he named is probably the one I heard. The first 2 Coltrane albums I listened to I did not like at all. Then I heard the Coltrane album. I thought, Ok, this is better. I didn’t like all the tracks, but I liked some. It’s definitely an album I’ll listen to again. I was more impressed with Impressions. Pete mentioned the track that I like best, “India.” When I heard A Love Supreme I could tell it’s a very impressive music. I’ll have to hear it again to tell if I like it. I would rank it as either one or two of his best work, from what I’ve heard. This show was interesting, giving me things to think about. I’m not sure I want to go further with Coltrane. Maybe I have all the Coltrane I need. I’m more interested in putting my money towards building up my growing Sun-Ra collection. With what Pete said I will think about trying Giant Steps.
This is a good show for me to learn. I’ll comment before I watch. Maybe I’ll have something to say later. After I watch the video. In the not too distant past I didn’t like Jazz. This year I’ve opened up to Free Jazz. That has impacted how I often listen to music in general. So I’m in new territory, trying to figure things out. Coltrane is one of the masters I’m looking into. I’m not interested in traditional stuff; I’m going for the radical stuff. I’ve heard some of his early 60s albums. I’ve listened to A Love Supreme. Just over a week ago I heard Ascension. So I’m very interested to see what’s said here.
I really enjoyed the trip down Trane Lane. My list would run very similar to Pete's, so no need rehashing it, but my #1 would be "My Favorite Things", as it was the album that made me a fan of Jazz music. My "on-ramp", if you will. Interesting to see all the records Mike owns that I never saw before. I don't know much about all those old compilation sets. I would love to see a Lee Morgan episode like this in the future. As for now, Pete has me in the mood for some Coltrane Live at Birdland! ✌

The three artists I own more albums from are Miles, Zappa and Coltrane. Very impressed with Mike's vinyl jewels, wow!!! I got into jazz until the CD era but so far have repurchased Blue Train, Giant Steps and A Love Supreme on vinyl. I highlight his live antologies, including The European Tours from Pablo (you get 5 epic My Favorite Things!!!), In Europe (by Charly), you get a full A Love Supreme from Graz (I think it was later included in the deluxe version by Impulse!), a later archival release from 2005 with yet another kickass My Favorite Things (One Down, One Up Live at the Half Note) an the most recent one, A Love Supreme live in Seattle, 1965 (a really out there rendition, not for the faint of heart!). And yes, I also own The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings.
Yes, the deluxe 2-CD set of A Love Supreme has in its first gatefold-ish open the letter and drawing (but only the above-the-crease portion, cuts off the rest of the sax) and the poem, but also reprints the words in more easily-readable size in its booklet. But certainly not LP-poster size. :)

Top 13: First Meditations (a sentimental favorite) Sun Ship (the most thrilling studio recording for me) The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings - (My favorite of the live releases - I can never get enough of Dolphy's bass clarinet) Meditations Crescent Transition Live at Birdland (Afro Blue is amazing here) Interstellar Space Live in Japan Ascension Stellar Regions Afro Blue Impressions (poorly recorded but very exciting nonetheless) Kulu Sé Mama (not a perfect album by any means but it does have the extraordinary Dear Lord which was removed from later CD edtions of Transition and makes a change) "A Love Supreme" ? - I prefer most of the other 1965 releases and what followed to this. Still great, but I rarely play it these days. I love all the Atlantics too but still prefer the Impulse years, particularly 1965 onwards.

Picking favorite Trane is almost an impossible task. I love so much of his catalog and have collected a fair amount. Tops for me would have to Complete Live at the VV, Live at Birdland, Love Supreme , Crescent, My favorite Things, Africa /Brass, and One up ,one down. Really too many great albums to list. Coltrane Time 8. Om 9. Stellar Regions 10. Ascension And a couple essential sideman recordings. Miles Davis - ‘Kind Of Blue’ (of course) and the exquisite Tadd Dameron - ‘Mating Call’. There is of course any number of live albums that are brilliant too. I’m in my early fifties and have been into jazz now for about 30 years so although that’s over half my life, it’s such a rich world I feel I’ve only scratched the surface. My general musical taste tends to veer often to the weird and experimental, but I also appreciate well crafted melody. Coltrane covered all that and was a continual seeker.

Pharoah Sanders took a love supreme to a whole new level on his Thembi and Karma albums. My favorite albums by coltrane have Pharoah on them. Specifically, live in seattle. Also Duke and Coltrane from 1963 and the avant-garde with Don Cherry 1966.

Interesting to see all the 50s picks, a reminder that no era of Coltrane is substandard. That said, my faves are pretty much in line with Pete's, and haven't really changed since I went through a massive Coltrane phase in my 20s, heard all the albums working up to Ascension and beyond (that's my #11), read all the books. 1. When I want to hear what Coltrane should've sounded like I listen to Mel Collins Era King Crimson! Check it out people! There are dozens of live releases out there! It is much more listenable than Coltrane! People go where they are led. Not always the right place. Name recognition.
The fact that you would even question why a legend like Coltrane is deserving of a ranking episode tells me all that I need to know about you. Go troll somewhere else.
Going through the show, I had to laugh when it was said Ballads is the album to recommend for a Coltrane newbie, not something like, A love Supreme. So I am a Jazz newbie. The first thing I bought of Coltrane was a set of 5 albums. The first CD I heard was Ballads. I hated it. I never wanted to hear it again. I am looking for the avant-garde jazz. I don't want to hear traditional jazz, so Ballads is not what I want to hear. A Love Supreme & Ascension… I’d be lying if I said I understood Ascension… that’s what this newbie wants to start with and see where I can go from there. Ballads might be easier to get, so maybe that's a starting point for many, but stuff like that I’ll skip. It doesn’t interest me. I will go with my gut instincts. I have no desire to becoming a well-rounded Jazz devotee. I am listening to music that often my brain can’t quite handle, or can’t handle at all, like Ascension. That’s where my interest is, where I’m learning from. Like I said, this is a good show for me. Someone replied to a comment I made elsewhere that you learn by being critical. As usual I'm being critical.
"Ballads" is a beautiful album. I love it, when McCoy plays standards and shows his lyrical side. There's nothing wrong with being into the avantgarde stuff ofc, we're all different and respond to different things musically and that's a good thing, but perhaps give the classic, melodic jazz another chance somewhere along the road.
@@sotdude7 You are likely 100% right, but in my case what finally got me to dip a toe into the waters is a scene in a SF movie… & I might mention the kind of SF movie that most people wouldn’t want to watch because, for one thing it has a discussion on Free-Jazz in it. Anyways, it was a scene in a SF movie with music playing that would turn off most listeners. One character in the movie (part of the 97%, or whatever, majority) makes a distasteful face & says, “what’s with this music!” The other character says he likes music like this because you can’t predict where the musician is going to go. The scene intrigued me. After the movie I got on the net & dug. I learnt the song they listened to is Coltrane’s, “India.” I wanted to hear the whole thing, so I ordered a set of 5 albums that had “India” on one. Most of the albums were safe & traditional, which I found no interest in. Of course Ballads was one of those. I reacted the strongest to it. It represented everything I’ve always rejected about Jazz in the past, & see no reason to change. From tasting those first 5 Coltrane albums, it was the few radical, non-traditional tracks, especially “India,” that made me think I want to keep putting my foot into these waters. So that’s where I’m at. With a foot in the Jazz waters, slowly going deeper, still very unsure about what I’m getting into. I like your comment that the music is scary to most newbies. The Jazz guy who appeals to me most is Sun-Ra. His music is really fit to scare off most people. I listen doing my best to understand what is going on, and it draws me in deeper & deeper. If Sun-Ra was alive he would say that’s what his music is about: not understanding, but trying to understand. For me, I don’t want to get fully immersed in jazz. With Jazz I do want to get past being scared off from it, or from any kind of music. What’s strange is scary, with Jazz I’m learning how to understand strangeness & get past the fear. So far I only got a foot in, maybe I’m up to getting my other foot wet. How far in will I go? I can’t say.

It's funny when we hear these legendary names, we feel like we must be missing something if we don't like them! When it's all unlistenable racket! Miles Davis and John Coltrane are not the jazz you should be listening to! Do a little research and find sounds that resonate. Instead of banging your head against the wall thinking why don't get I this! There is nothing to get!
Ridiculous comment…there is a reason why Miles and Coltrane are legends. You don’t like them, fine, but as you can see by the comments here, plenty of people love this stuff.
Mel Collins can run circles around Coltrane. Coltrane if he was a Rock guitarist would be Holdsworth-Mel would be Uli Jon Roth! I'll take Uli and Mell Every day and twice on Sundays!

As a jazz guy at heart for most of my life, its really nice to see John Coltrane get covered in the channel, when you talk about jazz as a genre, no conversation is ever complete without mentioning John Coltrane who is one of the most important musicians in history and one of the true legends of saxophone

I do love the Impulse era a lot. I have the box sets of the Quartet on Impulse!, as well as the Atlantic box and even the red Prestige box (16 cds!). I know the albums too and love Blue Train. The one with Kenny Burrell is great, with Freight Trane being a long-standing Favorite. Got into Ole for a while. There are so many. Would be cool to rank his live albums - there are a lot. One Up One Down was a cool one with the quartet. The live A Love Supreme from the deluxe version was nice, the recent live version from last year was not quite as good as the sax was low in the mix. For my number one I have to go with "Crescent". It tends to get overshadowed by "A Love Supreme" but it's just as beautiful and deeply spiritual. Incredible music that is essential listening.
One of the many reasons I love this channel. I love classic rock , metal and am a decades long jazz lover. You cover all my loves …plus the monsters den for good measure. Don’t need to go anywhere else…just stay here all the damn time:)

I havent heard all his music but my favourite album by him is Coltranes Sound. Its a nice listen and its easily accessible.
Karrin Alysson did a rendition of "Ballads" with her vocals. One of my favorite jazz vocal albums of all time.
I have that book. It includes many transcriptions of his music and in depth analysis of his theories.
Nice to see Mike back. I would love for there to be more jazz content here on the channel. Maybe both you and Mike could talk about Wes Montgomery or even folks like Horace Silver or Sonny Rollins! I’m a massive Coltrane fan so doing a top was hard but here it goes.

Wish I caught this when it premiered. Coltrane is the greatest musician of the 20th century. I love all his periods, but as you'll see, I veer towards the wilder side of his catalog. The more he absorbed the music of the world, the better he got (because let's consider the fact that free jazz has a lot of influence from things like Middle Eastern styles and definitely Tibetan ritual music)

I listened to the second half. I’ve only heard a small number of Coltrane albums, & I’ve only heard them once through, so I certainly wouldn’t try to rank what I’ve heard. I found it interesting that Pete’s list had 3 albums I do like. The self titled Coltrane he named is probably the one I heard. The first 2 Coltrane albums I listened to I did not like at all. Then I heard the Coltrane album. I thought, Ok, this is better. I didn’t like all the tracks, but I liked some. It’s definitely an album I’ll listen to again. I was more impressed with Impressions. Pete mentioned the track that I like best, “India.” When I heard A Love Supreme I could tell it’s a very impressive music. I’ll have to hear it again to tell if I like it. I would rank it as either one or two of his best work, from what I’ve heard. This show was interesting, giving me things to think about. I’m not sure I want to go further with Coltrane. Maybe I have all the Coltrane I need. I’m more interested in putting my money towards building up my growing Sun-Ra collection. With what Pete said I will think about trying Giant Steps.
This is a good show for me to learn. I’ll comment before I watch. Maybe I’ll have something to say later. After I watch the video. In the not too distant past I didn’t like Jazz. This year I’ve opened up to Free Jazz. That has impacted how I often listen to music in general. So I’m in new territory, trying to figure things out. Coltrane is one of the masters I’m looking into. I’m not interested in traditional stuff; I’m going for the radical stuff. I’ve heard some of his early 60s albums. I’ve listened to A Love Supreme. Just over a week ago I heard Ascension. So I’m very interested to see what’s said here.
I really enjoyed the trip down Trane Lane. My list would run very similar to Pete's, so no need rehashing it, but my #1 would be "My Favorite Things", as it was the album that made me a fan of Jazz music. My "on-ramp", if you will. Interesting to see all the records Mike owns that I never saw before. I don't know much about all those old compilation sets. I would love to see a Lee Morgan episode like this in the future. As for now, Pete has me in the mood for some Coltrane Live at Birdland! ✌

Great Discussion! I myself would have added Africa / Brass and a few of his recordings from 66 67 with Rashid Ali, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane.
The arrival of rock'n roll made jazz respectable.
The three artists I own more albums from are Miles, Zappa and Coltrane. Very impressed with Mike's vinyl jewels, wow!!! I got into jazz until the CD era but so far have repurchased Blue Train, Giant Steps and A Love Supreme on vinyl. I highlight his live antologies, including The European Tours from Pablo (you get 5 epic My Favorite Things!!!), In Europe (by Charly), you get a full A Love Supreme from Graz (I think it was later included in the deluxe version by Impulse!), a later archival release from 2005 with yet another kickass My Favorite Things (One Down, One Up Live at the Half Note) an the most recent one, A Love Supreme live in Seattle, 1965 (a really out there rendition, not for the faint of heart!). And yes, I also own The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings.
Yes, the deluxe 2-CD set of A Love Supreme has in its first gatefold-ish open the letter and drawing (but only the above-the-crease portion, cuts off the rest of the sax) and the poem, but also reprints the words in more easily-readable size in its booklet. But certainly not LP-poster size. :)

"A Love Supreme" ? - I prefer most of the other 1965 releases and what followed to this. Still great, but I rarely play it these days. I love all the Atlantics too but still prefer the Impulse years, particularly 1965 onwards.

I’m in my early fifties and have been into jazz now for about 30 years so although that’s over half my life, it’s such a rich world I feel I’ve only scratched the surface. My general musical taste tends to veer often to the weird and experimental, but I also appreciate well crafted melody. Coltrane covered all that and was a continual seeker.

Pharoah Sanders took a love supreme to a whole new level on his Thembi and Karma albums. My favorite albums by coltrane have Pharoah on them. Specifically, live in seattle. Also Duke and Coltrane from 1963 and the avant-garde with Don Cherry 1966.

Interesting to see all the 50s picks, a reminder that no era of Coltrane is substandard. That said, my faves are pretty much in line with Pete's, and haven't really changed since I went through a massive Coltrane phase in my 20s, heard all the albums working up to Ascension and beyond (that's my #11), read all the books.

When I want to hear what Coltrane should've sounded like I listen to Mel Collins Era King Crimson! Check it out people! There are dozens of live releases out there! It is much more listenable than Coltrane! People go where they are led. Not always the right place. Name recognition.

The fact that you would even question why a legend like Coltrane is deserving of a ranking episode tells me all that I need to know about you. Go troll somewhere else.
Going through the show, I had to laugh when it was said Ballads is the album to recommend for a Coltrane newbie, not something like, A love Supreme. So I am a Jazz newbie. The first thing I bought of Coltrane was a set of 5 albums. The first CD I heard was Ballads. I hated it. I never wanted to hear it again. I am looking for the avant-garde jazz. I don't want to hear traditional jazz, so Ballads is not what I want to hear. A Love Supreme & Ascension… I’d be lying if I said I understood Ascension… that’s what this newbie wants to start with and see where I can go from there. Ballads might be easier to get, so maybe that's a starting point for many, but stuff like that I’ll skip. It doesn’t interest me. I will go with my gut instincts. I have no desire to becoming a well-rounded Jazz devotee. I am listening to music that often my brain can’t quite handle, or can’t handle at all, like Ascension. That’s where my interest is, where I’m learning from. Like I said, this is a good show for me. Someone replied to a comment I made elsewhere that you learn by being critical. As usual I'm being critical.
I am 100% sure you are in the minority. An album like Ascension would scare most newbies away from jazz forever.
"Ballads" is a beautiful album. I love it, when McCoy plays standards and shows his lyrical side. There's nothing wrong with being into the avantgarde stuff ofc, we're all different and respond to different things musically and that's a good thing, but perhaps give the classic, melodic jazz another chance somewhere along the road.
@@sotdude7 You are likely 100% right, but in my case what finally got me to dip a toe into the waters is a scene in a SF movie… & I might mention the kind of SF movie that most people wouldn’t want to watch because, for one thing it has a discussion on Free-Jazz in it. Anyways, it was a scene in a SF movie with music playing that would turn off most listeners. One character in the movie (part of the 97%, or whatever, majority) makes a distasteful face & says, “what’s with this music!” The other character says he likes music like this because you can’t predict where the musician is going to go. The scene intrigued me. After the movie I got on the net & dug. I learnt the song they listened to is Coltrane’s, “India.” I wanted to hear the whole thing, so I ordered a set of 5 albums that had “India” on one. Most of the albums were safe & traditional, which I found no interest in. Of course Ballads was one of those. I reacted the strongest to it. It represented everything I’ve always rejected about Jazz in the past, & see no reason to change. From tasting those first 5 Coltrane albums, it was the few radical, non-traditional tracks, especially “India,” that made me think I want to keep putting my foot into these waters. So that’s where I’m at. With a foot in the Jazz waters, slowly going deeper, still very unsure about what I’m getting into. I like your comment that the music is scary to most newbies. The Jazz guy who appeals to me most is Sun-Ra. His music is really fit to scare off most people. I listen doing my best to understand what is going on, and it draws me in deeper & deeper. If Sun-Ra was alive he would say that’s what his music is about: not understanding, but trying to understand. For me, I don’t want to get fully immersed in jazz. With Jazz I do want to get past being scared off from it, or from any kind of music. What’s strange is scary, with Jazz I’m learning how to understand strangeness & get past the fear. So far I only got a foot in, maybe I’m up to getting my other foot wet. How far in will I go? I can’t say.

It's funny when we hear these legendary names, we feel like we must be missing something if we don't like them! When it's all unlistenable racket! Miles Davis and John Coltrane are not the jazz you should be listening to! Do a little research and find sounds that resonate. Instead of banging your head against the wall thinking why don't get I this! There is nothing to get!
Ridiculous comment…there is a reason why Miles and Coltrane are legends. You don’t like them, fine, but as you can see by the comments here, plenty of people love this stuff.
Mel Collins can run circles around Coltrane. Coltrane if he was a Rock guitarist would be Holdsworth-Mel would be Uli Jon Roth! I'll take Uli and Mell Every day and twice on Sundays!
