  • The same horse as a 4 year old doing 7 months later doing her first jump under saddle
    • JUMPIING RIVER!!!! (1s...
    My first time falling off River..
    She's a 3 and half year old 16.3hh Dutch warmblood mare, recently broken.
    She's only been ridden a handful off times in her life, and this was only her second time being ridden since she came back to Ireland (Her and Boo will be moving again to Dubai in a few weeks, info in previous videos).. She's just in very light work atm before she moves as she will be having a break then until next year when she turns 4
    So anyway, at home in Ireland I only have hacking facilities, so apart from long reining and working in hand, I haven't been able to lunge her.. Hence her being fresh. She does live outside though which helps I reckon. I was fine and she stood quietly for me to get back on afterwards thankfully.

      Using the crop to force a young and unexperienced horse that shows fear and insecurity (which are natural instincts!) is not what I'd call trust. In fact, by this way her horse will never learn to trust her, cause whenever it's scared of something it'll expect pain.

    If I was you, I'd just ignore all these people telling you how to ride this horse because none of them have ever ridden River so I don't think any of them have the right to tell you how to ride the horse. In my eyes, you handled the situation amazingly and my instructor always tells me you always learn from the challenging ones.

    I don’t like to read comments that tell you how to ride. Your saying your giving “tips” when your not your being horrible. I read a comment that said “look what your doing to his mouth”. There was nothing wrong with it, he was sticking his head up and all the girl was doing was shorting her reigns to prepare her for what he’s about to do next.
    Please, if you’ve never ridden that horse, then don’t be telling her how to ride. She does what she feels is best and safe for the horse and you can keep your own information to yourselves because not everyone needs that negativity.
    I have a 17hh Draught thoroughbred who shares a bond with me, and the amount of times I’ve got messages saying “Keep your heels down” “shorten your reigns”. You don’t know my horse, don’t be telling me how to ride him if you’ve never ridden him yourself.
    Same goes for this girl and her horse.

    • @TexasLadyS

      Not telling her how to RIDE, she rides fine. Her reins ARE too short, and this is the wrong bit for this horse. This horse is DANGEROUS, and she's not controlling it well at all and doing NOTHING to correct VERY....EXTREMELY bad behavior.

  • @thejauntyone
    @thejauntyone 6 років тому

    You are a very good rider. A lot of the people commenting here have a few riding lessons under their belt and think they know it all or are Americans used to riding trail horses that never go faster than a walk. In western riding they have very little contact with the horses mouth and are oftentimes use curb bits with a chin strap or chains, they see no slack in the reins and believe you are pulling on the bit. They do not understand continual very soft contact with the horses mouth. Btw; I learned to ride in England 55 years go and have lived in the U.S. for 45 years.

    I have to say I don't think the aids are to blame necessarily. Just a suggestion. She doesn't react each time the rider does it is random speeding up slowing down, dodging, ears back and forth continuously. At one point the rider used lots of leg and the whip lightly after she halted and she didn't react except to go on but then she resumed acting up. She doesnt just look frisky and green she looks genuinely freaked out by something or in pain. And she didn't dump the rider in the most violent way she even looked down and then left rsther sadly as if it was a last resort to say can't you see I can't handle this? It may just be me but I dont think it looks normal.

      Francesca Reaney Very true, which I find funny because I've seen many horse accidents caused because of bit use, such as this one. Even 'soft hands' or 'light pressure' causes pain in the horses mouth. I've also seen literally ALL types of horses go bitless in ALL horse sports out there, including driving. It can be done, problem is most people are either to insecure or to uneducated to go bitless with their horse.

    • @spacemonkey123100
      @spacemonkey123100 9 років тому +7

      she's also young, and may simply not use to the pressure yet. i had my horse go bitless once, and she hated it. she really didn't like the pressure being on her entire face, but i know another horse that absolutely LOVES it. i find it really depends on the horse and what pressure they like more. Hailey goes nice and soft in a bitless bridle. penny gets all stressed out and wont settle. i find it really depends. but that is simply my opinion. if river learns to except the bit, which will take time, then awesome but if she prefers bitless, then that;s cool too. sorry if my spelling or grammar is off. im dyslexic. :)

    • @minihorselover001
      @minihorselover001 9 років тому +1

      spacemonkey123100 You're telling me your horse hated you riding her in a halter? That's bitless in my book. Hackamores are just as bad as bits and that 'pressure' you're talking about is pain. Calling it 'pressure' doesn't change the fact that this mare is showing pain reactions to the slightest bit 'pressure'. This mare is talking. Screaming, actually. Yet everyone would rather explain away her attempt at communication verses actually listening.

    Hi Lauren I know this is a very old video and you don’t have river anymore but my 5yo has started doing this exact thing and I can’t seem to fix it. I haven’t been able to find another horse that does this exact thing i.e. arching their back and shaking/reaching their head if you try to use and contact. He also bounces up/little rears like her. She also seems to have a bouncey/floaty walk like mine which doesn’t seem to help. Do you have any ideas to help him over it?/what did you do with River?

      Shelley Cram thats the one thing you never want to do is get off or take them back home if they dont want to pass something as they will learn from that and know what to do in the future everytime you ride that horse

    That's some really good riding on your part. River looks like a rodeo horse when she bucks!!

    Darn that button. It looks to me that for the most part your hands are fairly soft however it looks like this mare has never been taught to give to pressure you need to do some groundwork. And get her flexing laterally when she refuses to go forward make her move sideways make her move in circles. She has to be taught to give to pressure first.

    All these "know it all" youtube riding instructors, who are probably 12 years old are hilarious!

      +aabbii93here Well Im 31, a vet by profession, got my first pony in birth gift as a 3 month old. I dont know it all but I do know whipping a horse is never the only solution for anything. Is that valid enough for you or would you keep finding reasons why anyone disagreeing with whips and hits are "wrong" and not as competent horse people?

      HannahOfferdahl There were a LOT of moments deleted. But thank you for commenting here and give me notice. My own comments dont really make sense anymore and are mostly obnoxious. I should get back here and delete my own ones I guess.

      You can get a browser extension that blocks youtube comments. I installed it before purely so I could enjoy equestrian videos without seeing the kiddies endlessly whine about riders seats and doling out unsolicited garbage suggestions. I'm considering re-installing it again!

      hmcdsinger Really? That's def something I will look into right away. I had no idea but would love to be able to not be confronted with those comments.

    Good sat! Bur I have a question.....you took Boo to calm her down, right? Wouldn't it be easier for River isch she sees Boo? And she dont'n have to go first. I see that you did this in some situation, but i'm really intrested in this question :)
    Greetings from switzerland :) and keep going!

      thank you :) as they are the only two horses on the property its best to work them around one another.. otherwise its a very noisy and unsettling affair for both the horses and myself, River actually prefers if Boo is behind her, she tend's to 'lean' on Boo if she's in front haha :)
