Don't forget to check out the miniac.co Black Friday deals! 1. Buy 2 Minis and get the third free* 2. Buy a cutting mat get a brush coffin half off 3. Buy 2 masterclass courses and get the third free *All minis have to be the same scale & type (physical/digital)
Couldnt find any terms on this deal and didnt know where to reach out about this, but looks like the shopping cart only allows one deal to be applied, so if you wanted the 2 courses get one free, it cancels out the buy 2 get 1 mini and also cancels the mini + course bundle discount as well. Was this intended or a shopping cart bug?
Hi Scott, I am curious if I missed the Black Friday deal on the Brush Coffin Box. It looks like it is currently selling for $40 on your website. Thanks! Love your videos.
Scott, I know the algorithm may say one thing, but as someone who enjoys and watched almost all your content, I actually find ones like this the most engaging and informative. How many tabletop creators are taking dives into exploring the game design space on quite a deep level? Of the high quality production level, very few. How many painting videos are out there? 1000s. This kind of content makes you stand out and I for one appreciate videos like this where it’s a bit outside the norm.
Want to echo this to the highest degree! I love everything I’ve ever seen from Miniac but videos like this are what made me fall in love with the channel!
I'm back on the Miniac train after drifting away from your vids for quite a while... Really enjoyed a few of ya vids from the last month or so and now YT makes sure to feed me your new uploads front and centre and I swiftly click to CONSUMMME!
Core Space was an eye opener for me. No D6 dice, only custom dice to decide outcomes, it had looting so there was excitement there. The game/level/dungeon got harder the longer you stayed so there was urgency, great freedom of movement and interactive environments. It had event cards for added randomness, custom crew building, pets, droids, bounty hunters, police, civilians, gangers, the list goes on. All A.I. controlled. So so good!
this is not the video i expected but it is 100% the video I WANTED. Thank you for this - I've been thinking about writing and designing my own rules/game and this has given me a big boost.
Gonna be honest i love finally getting to hear the culmination of all of your bits and pieces of talking about game design on TUP. I love your standard painting videos but im not gonna lie I love when you do the kinda Video essay type beat of just explaining a topic.
I'm hoping you keep up this series. It was both truly enjoyable and helpful personally, as I am working on designing a simple wargame. It's mostly so I can try to introduce my son to the joys of the hobby. But it's been tough finding people to converse with about game design in general let alone building your own design. So again thanks for taking the time to produce this awesome content.
The point about "Not everyone is going to love your game and that is not a problem." is very important and something that has been lost, especially when I look at movies and video games. People are never going to have a strong opinion about bland food, but if the food is spicy some are going to love it! Not very dish has to be enjoyed by everyone and that is not a problem. To stay inside this metaphor: I enjoy some spicy dishes and when I connect with strangers online who also do, it is a wonderful experience.
I don't play but paint and I enjoy these videos as it's like taking a break from the norm and is refreshing to learn a different aspect of the hobby as a whole, please don't stop educating us and growing yourself.
Really enjoyed the video. I'm someone who just simply loves to learn. I love filling my brain with information about the things I like and enjoy. Thanks Scott. Good luck on your journey!
It's a great video and I hope you continue! Anyone that's been in the hobby space long enough (I'd hope) has an opinion on design and there's nothing wrong with trying to learn more.
This was a really well made and surprisingly deep dive into such a topic, loved how well you went through the list of lessons with sources to back them up. Really engaging stuff! Would love to see what game came out of the process in the end.
this might be my new favorite video tbh. and like, i love all the videos, but as someone who is also working on making my first game and figuring out what it will be, this was a perfect video to have pop up! super helpful advice and awesome to see someone dealing with the same stuff I am 👍
I very much like all these videos expanding on the Miniac Cinematic Universe and the behind the scenes of why games are the way they are. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Scott.
This was one of the most interesting UA-cam videos I watched in a long time, it felt like one of my university lectures with the level of research and variety of sources you used but your version is way more entertaining! Can't wait to see what you come up with!
Finally! Well produced, well researched, anti-slop content! Too many youtubers just paint whatever the latest miniatures are, with no useful commentary. Thank you for making a video like this!!
I really enjoyed this take on game design. It's something you're clearly passionate about and have prepared for well which means that the video doesn't just drag on. I enjoy listening to people talk passionately about things, often regardless of the subject, and this was a pleasure to listen to. Can't wait to see the development of your game. I'm intrigued by your description of it so far.
This was a great video for me, and it's always nice to get some different stuff on the channel! Variety is the spice of life! This video is a great help for me personally for internalizing a bunch of stuff I've been thinking on for a while now while designing my own open-world campaign system for Battletech: Alpha Strike.
I, for one, will definitely be watching any game design videos you put out. I'm of a similar mindset where I enjoy tons of different aspects of the hobby and game design as a whole is a super interesting topic.
I enjoyed you covering an adjacent topic that you are passionate about. There are plenty of channels that cover the main topic of painting miniatures. It's you as a host and personality that keeps people engaged.
This is another great example why I love your videos! You always let us in on your journey and share your progress and your research and the obstacles on the way. It really shows the huge amount of work you put into your videos.
Love these drops, I actually went to school for game design and found I couldn't make the cut commercially. This was 15+ years ago now, but I still love designing and creating even if it's within an accepted rule set to do it. (Not that I couldn't, I wouldn't relocated to a high priced area for intern wages). I love the statement of beg, borrow and steal everything you like and see what you smash together. It won't be perfect but you're capturing a feel for a set audience.
I absolutely love this type of content. I'm very into the creative process of game design amd the mechanics of why and how. One resource that you may or may not ha e looked into is game testing. I've found that it gets my creative juices flowing seeing someone else's ideas come to light. If you are seriously creating a new game, I would love to help be a part of the game testing.
Excellent video, really enjoyed this entire thing! Trying my hands at fan-made content for a game at the moment, and this helped push my ideas around to some cool places 🤘
I know these videos might not do as well and that you are in the process of rethinking your channel a bit but personally I loved this content. It's especially nice to see you excited about a topic.
I enjoyed this video a lot! As a Character/creature artist in the video game industry thats always dancing around the idea of sculpting minis, I'd love to see videos of your practically designing and testing your game mechanics and characters. Openly exploring lore and Narrative too!
I would love to see more videos on game design! Looking forward to the next one. Maybe with some early prototypes of you dueling game, if you're comfortable sharing them.
Great vid. It’s nice to get a very different topic from the norm. Too many painting videos can start to feel repetitive, and stuff like this really helps break the pattern
Probably one of the bettee non-painting educational videos put out. Love the content and really looking forward to what comes out of the Miniac brand re: games and efforts.
Great video! I love that your channel offers truly original content, rather than the typical "10 tricks to improve your slap chop" or "must-have painting gadgets to level up." I watched it, rewatched it, saved it for later, and even looked up audiobooks for the books you recommended. Thanks for the inspiration!
Please keep doing videos on game design and what you are discovering! It's incredibly interesting to see what goes into games that people play and how you apply them to what you are working on. Good job!
Dude I would love more videos about game design! Board games have been a huge part of my life and I've always dabbled with the idea of making my own some day
While I absolutely love your painting (literally inspired me to paint at all) these kinds of videos where you walk through your learning experience is really nice. Keep up the amazing work!!
For me (as someone, who is trying to make his own miniature game in his non-existing free time), this video was great! I hope you will continue to give a little insight in your game developement process.
Hey Scott, great video! The section on "fun" particularly resonated with me. As a clarinet teacher, I'm often asked about how I make learning music fun. School admin often perceive that as being the number one thing that keeps kids learning an instrument. It's great to see fun framed as a challenge at the limits of your ability, instead of just exciting colors and trends. I'm really enjoying the new style of videos which include a bit of your philosophy and perspective. It's cool to see you touching on the transferable soft skills that creative pursuits, like mini painting teach us. You're a thoughtful, clever dude. Keep it up!
I personally like these kind of videos. I think I approach things like you with loads of investigation, deep dive and struggle to get something done sometimes. Can’t wait for the next!
Love the video! In a dueling game the ownership could be found in mixing class (fighter, barbarian, archer), ancestry (elf, orc, goblin) and weapon (sword, whip, dual axes). Like many other games that open combinations for infinite "rock paper scissors "... if the game is played as the best of three, changing the weapon could be enough customization between games to change it up... Great job, keep going
I love this video because I'm currently designing a ttwg around tanks, and this is a massive resource of advice for how to handle different things I've been putting off. You've been killing it on the video topics lately too
Dude such a good video and all stuff I apply to writing comics. Creatively I’d add one thing to that sense of enjoyment is verisimilitude. There’s a reason guys love watching sniper rifles get put together in every action movie or the training sequence or the depth of lore in Star Wars. That depth signals the level of craft and love put into a product to create a world that is deep and internally consistent and lets us jump in head first and wade around neck deep about all the nerdy details. Some people like chicken tenders, but goodie pp’s love the tendies and its lore. Verisimilitude for the win.
This is an incredible video. This summary of so much information and considerations is so useful I've shared it with so many people. I wish there were more games delivered with this much wisdom behind them. Thanks for making this!
Love all the insights. Videos like this must be a ton of work, but it’s so informative and interesting to watch. Good luck with your game. I’m excited to hear more about it. I’m toying around with the idea of my own game that that feels similar to Gloomhaven but with more flexibility in character creation, deck building, and more opportunities to upgrade/modify
Loved the vid. For a presentation style video, it was casual enough that was still fun to watch with a lot of info. I loved your use of b-roll, between what you shot and all the supportive interviews. It was put together really well.
I'm new to the channel and I'm sad to hear these don't do well because this was probably my favorite video of yours I've seen. I'm working on my own game and the middle of this video was hit after hit exactly what I needed to unstick myself
Your enthusiasm for the hobby is one of the major reasons I both subscribed and then joined your patreon. As long as you keep following your passion I'll keep watching
WO HO HO HO. Congrats on your journey! I have been working in gamedev as programmer for the last 10 years. I can suggest drop the "Fun" and converge into "Interesting". Fun is for dopamine feedback so there are a lot of cheap technic to boost dopamine surge. Interesting game cycle and complexity of variation are are keys to good games. Glad to see ya exploring new horizons!
Hey mate. Thanks so much for this. Last year (year before?) a friend recommended TUP after hearing your ep on a game that could use 75mm minis. This inspired me to put some thoughts down, and although RL is getting in the way, I'm really enjoying the process of creating and refining. So: keep up the good work! Love it!
Thanks Scott! Just watched this with my boy who's interested in game design. Very inspiring! Keep up the great work and please make more! I'd love to see the process and evolution your own game design goes through. Thanks again!
Thanks for highlighting how hobbies have more than just one aspect of enjoyment. For many many years I simply collected and painted miniatures because I did not enjoy playing the game they were associated with. Sometimes I simply read novels that were associated with that particular IP because I enjoyed the setting and I was going through a doldrum of wanting to paint or collect. I now play a particular miniature game because I enjoy the game itself and really like the competitive, yet balanced nature of the game. There are so many aspects of hobbies that can be enjoyed, that you shouldn't ever put the pressure on yourself of not feeling you are doing it "right". Just enjoy what you do and take it from there.
Loved the video and that this content can exist alongside the creative videos. Don’t undercut the creative design you already did those minis and classes look awesome!
That was a really interesting vid! Thanks for putting it together, I actually enjoy your peeks behind the curtain of gaming as well as the on stage pretty painting stuff =D. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia!
Great Video! Wanted to touch on a few points and how they were absolutely applicable to our first game ARSENAL. In our game we have a sort of reinforcement ingress phase, and while we intended the phase to act as an artificial tool to increase game length and keep model count low, we found that players were treating this ingress phase almost as a new pre/post combat phase, very chess like. Players loved it and it helped push ARSENAL as a unique mech game. Another point we focused on was player ownership, while we have lots of lore for various mercenary factions and could have pushed players to join premade factions with their own design, we instead put the lore aside and pushed players to create their own fireteams, going as far to include a name generator, and let players own their force rather than fitting into a larger narrative. And then for the world lore we wrote it out in a way that players could easily insert themselves into any conflict and develop their own narrative
This was one of the most informative videos I've seen about this topic and has really been an eye opener for me in the creation of my own tabletop wargame. I would love to hear more of what you have to say on this subject. Im definitely going to check out those books you recommended!
Video Game dev here thats gotten really into Table top over the last 5 years. I really enjoyed the vid. Between DnD and war games I've really come to appreciate how the tabletop really is this father of Video games.
I haven't done extensive research like you, but listening to you describe how you're looking at injection moulded plastic at scale before even figuring out gameplay look is a peak into my own mindset 😆 Great video. Also started playing FaB recently too! Such a good game.
Love this sort of video. Amateur game designer, over here too. I just subscribed after a long lapse, because even though I really enjoy the channel the painting videos here kinda intimidate me. Keep up the good and interesting work!
I make a podcast about going on this same journey, although its focused on tabletop rpg design - these tips were really great reminders about where our focuses lie! Looking forward to seeing where your game design takes you
Hey ! One thing that was not mentioned in the video nor in the comments, as far as I've noticed. I've been starting a LOT of boardgame design projects since I was little, often going as far as prototyping them and playtesting them a bit. But today I only have one strong and commercially viable game that I'm still very excited about, and the difference was : I was not alone on this one ! BG design is a LONG and sometimes laborious process, and I tend to grow bored of my own ideas after a while, no matter how determined I was in the begining. But I've found it immensely more FUN and viable in doing it with a one of my best friends, who was equally as thrilled as I was, and with whom I could always playtest all the new ideas we've had ! Of course it means making some compromises sometimes, but having another brain and heart to feel, discuss and shape the best gaming experience is a tremendous help. Have you considered that ? Thanks for the cool video. I would love to follow game design takes from you more often :) Cheers from France
Thanks for the vid! This has always been a topic I wanted to dig into but didn’t know where to start so it’s great to have some references of useful resources!
I love seeing you do what YOU want. You talk on your podcast about how someone with an established fanbase gets kind of locked in and doesn't have the freedom to try new things. As a fan, I'd like to encourage you to explore anything you desire. I'm here for all of it. It was a little sad to hear you talk on TUP about how you're kind of locked in. You're a creative force and I hope you can break away from that feeling and still be happy with the results. Thank you so much for all you do. I can't express just how much you've helped me through my journey, and hope that the freedom to explore on yours is returned to you!
I love this. The internet has enabled such collaborative sharing and rapid development that would be so unthinkably hard pre-internet. Thank you for being another avenue of coagulating wisdom, sharing it, and giving me something to think about on my ongoing game design! A lot of this applies to my efforts as a tabletop DM. I always want to think about ways to streamline or ignore rough edges on the games we play to bring my players into the emotional response of FUN, not ambivalence, not boredom, not confusion, not helplessness. Fun is the goal, and having ways to define it, and to pursue it, is supremely valuable
Thanks for Rule of Carnage shout out Scott! I hope you enjoy our new book! ;) Other books that I hugely recommend: - The Art of Games Design, by Jesse Schnell (a lovely board exploration of why games design is so many different things at once) - The Mom Test, by Rob Fitzpatrick (the best book about playtesting that isn’t about playtesting) - Characteristics of Games (stuffed with Richard Garfield nuggets)
"Excitement exists between discovery and mastery" man is that such a concise and true-to-my-soul statement. Thematic games always seem more interesting to me over competitive games for that exact reason, as every player has their own ideas and leads to variety on the battlefield even with relatively similar army styles.
Love the relicblade mention. I just finished painting my first warband ever, and my first ever miniatures, which are Sean Sutter's sculpts. Great video - it's a good introduction to your channel, I'll be staying tuned for more like this!

Agreed - it reminds me of working at the university, when students created in depth analysis of difficult topics. Great stuff!

Loved the vid. For a presentation style video, it was casual enough that was still fun to watch with a lot of info. I loved your use of b-roll, between what you shot and all the supportive interviews. It was put together really well.
You've been on fire with the videos in my opinion, I love the videos with games and kitbashing as the focus and overall it has been great!
I'm new to the channel and I'm sad to hear these don't do well because this was probably my favorite video of yours I've seen. I'm working on my own game and the middle of this video was hit after hit exactly what I needed to unstick myself
Glad to hear that. Good luck with your game!!
I’ve been excited about your dueling game since you started chatting about it on TUP. Here for all the game design videos!
As a game designer and miniature painter, I LOVED this video. Super hyped to see more of your journey into game design in the future!
Love it!
Great video! I love game design content, so I'd happily see more of it.
Love the game design discussion. Can’t wait to see how your game turns out! Been wanting a decent dueling game for ages.
Scott, this is video was insightful and well thought out. More of this, please!
Cool video - understanding game design reveals so much about the hobby, why things are done the way they are, why things feel bad, etc. Great job
It's nice to "peek behind the curtain" from time to time. Really nice video. Thank you 😁
As someone in the middle of a game design project, this was a great watch, andithink I'll be coming back to it regularly!
Loving the new direction. Keep the random thoughts coming. This hobby space is much more and you're taking us there.
That was a really interesting vid! Thanks for putting it together, I actually enjoy your peeks behind the curtain of gaming as well as the on stage pretty painting stuff =D. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia!
I’m creating my own game atm, this video was very insightful:) I’m looking forward to more
Been working on a game myself and this was a great watch! I'd love to hear more about when you've got cooking.
I'm really excited to hear more about your design journey - I've been looking forward to this video for a while!
I'm actually going to forward this vid to a lot of my newer colleagues for game design, this is a great roundup!
Omg this video is hype! I want to see more on your creation process, challenges, breakdowns and breakthroughs. It’s actually fascinating!!
Hope this turns your channel around man, it's been awesome seeing you post more often, hell yeah
Thanks, this was very informative and its fun and I think it adds a lot of flava. Your inputs are adding a lot to the perspectives on the hobby
This was one of the most informative videos I've seen about this topic and has really been an eye opener for me in the creation of my own tabletop wargame. I would love to hear more of what you have to say on this subject. Im definitely going to check out those books you recommended!
First time seeing your content, but I love this video. Hope to see more from you and your process as a beginner game designer!
These are really great man, I look forward to more!
Dude, I'm super interested in where this goes! Very excited to see what you make.
Love videos about making games. Just recently finished my own dueling minis game for the Wargames Atlantic One Box challenge. Good luck
Please make more of these! I love hearing about game design and you explain what you've learned brilliantly
Looking forward to seeing where your game design takes you
Loving these game video’s, Scott! Keep ‘em coming :)
Love it. Im new to game design as well. I have been working on a very niche tabletop wargame. I'd be down for more game design vidz.
Love this! Interesting takes, loved all the quotes!
Thanks for Rule of Carnage shout out Scott! I hope you enjoy our new book! ;)
Other books that I hugely recommend:
- The Art of Games Design, by Jesse Schnell (a lovely board exploration of why games design is so many different things at once)
- The Mom Test, by Rob Fitzpatrick (the best book about playtesting that isn’t about playtesting)
- Characteristics of Games (stuffed with Richard Garfield nuggets)
"Excitement exists between discovery and mastery" man is that such a concise and true-to-my-soul statement. Thematic games always seem more interesting to me over competitive games for that exact reason, as every player has their own ideas and leads to variety on the battlefield even with relatively similar army styles.
Love the relicblade mention. I just finished painting my first warband ever, and my first ever miniatures, which are Sean Sutter's sculpts. Great video - it's a good introduction to your channel, I'll be staying tuned for more like this!
