What's interesting is that Platov was against the idea of this program at first. I think he once said that because he's a classically trained ice dancer, he didn't think that he would be able to pull it off. He wanted to do something Spanish instead. So Linichuk gave the rock'n'roll program to Krylova & Fedorov instead. But with some convincing from Grishuk, he eventually came around. The problem was that it looked a little silly for two Russian teams to skate the same type of program at this competition. That's probably one of the reasons why K&F ditched their program and went back to their 1993 free dance for the Olympics.
Too many separations, IMO, but their speed and her agility, especially, can't be denied. This paved the way for what may be the best FD ever -- their "In Memoriam" in 1998.
To Unholyteddy: I love Torvill & Dean, did not like Grishuk's attitude (personality wise), but clearly they had the edge. Their FD was technically so difficult, they deserved to win the Gold. Every turn (twizzle), choctaw, bracket... was done with high degree of difficulty.
This FD changed ice dancing. Technically, it was simply out of this world at that time. Artistically, I would place it a little lower than T&D's "Mack and Mabel", but it was great nonetheless. A masterpiece.
These issues (skating apart, etc) are often problems with many Linichuk teams. I think most of G&P's programs (except their amazing 95 OD) were superior while they coached by Dubova or Tarasova. For me, the problem with T&D was their program was conventionally stuffy and almost geriatric. This FD was nowhere near as difficult but I think what the judges liked about it was that it was still ballroom yet it was youthfully exuberant and jazzy. Just my guess. But I do generally agree with you.
Its the best dance they ever did and i'd say its hard to pick between this free dance and Torvill and Dean's but if you take into account the Original and Compulsory dances, its clear that T&D were robbed of the Olympics and should have won this competition outright and not on a technicality.
Record for the number of 6.0s? I think you'll find that Torvill and Dean hold that record with 155 over the period 1978-1984 and again in 1994. Beat that.
Ok, Torvill & Dean were not quite in the shape they were in relative to the early 80s but they were still phenomenal technicians. They unquestionably had the most difficult free dance out of everyone at that competition. The problem I had with it was that I found it boring beyond belief (their style almost seemed geriatric).
This is messy - I can't believe that the GB judge put them above T and D. But it has sparkle, admittedly. The main problem is they are a miles apart most of the time and they just pose rather too much. T and D had real ice dance technique and did exactly to the letter what the ISU wanted and then were let down.
It just has so soul. Nothing special about it. T&Ds dance was completely the opposite. And BTW, T&D are not retired. They are still touring and working as hard as ever and in January have a third series of Dancing on Ice. They're stars again after slipping into some obscurity after they initially stopped in 1998. Nobody has a clue who Grischuk and Platov are. T&D revolutionised ice dance. G&P are just 'another Russian couple'
always liked this performance but usova zhulin were a bit more fun and childish/[playful at the same championship. lovely to see maya in a dress, unlike the strapless number she wore at the 1994 olympics (i think)
Mailbuses - T&D slow? Rubbish. Old hat? Also rubbish. The ISU had said that it wanted a return to ballroom dancing after ten years of 'show' pieces like this one from G&P. T&D did do a very traditional style of ice dance, because that's what the ISU asked for. The judges instead gave the higher marks to the show pieces. Strange.. unholyteddy - totally agree with you. Loads of moves stolen from T&D. Nevelstraum - I've seen loaves of bread which are more seductive than this. Honestly.
I like the Olympic version better, better performance I'll say, does anyone have that video? Why can't you T&D fans keep your comments to their video only? it's annoy to see you guys moaning everywhere. LOL
How on Earth did that win gold? It's rubbish compared to T&D (and Usova and Zhulin for theat matter). It is instantly forgettable. It's sloppy, their timing is painfully bad (especially in the Olympic version). The lifts generally don't fit the mood of the music at all and were merely put in to try and get technical marks. Although T&D did do the same in their Olympic program, the lifts fitted in perfectly with the music.
An excellent programme. The German commentator was very pleased with this and is even praising it before they start dancing!

Неповторимые на все времена.
this clip is awesome! they were so amazing! i would've loved to see usova & zhulin's reaction though....lol

Right, that's what made T&D so special:
"The only non-russian couple"
technically they did break the rules at the 1994 lillehammer games

Oh, and BTW, my comments have a positive comment thing. Yours have lots of negatives, none of which are by me.

Torvill and Dean were two fatty sluggish dancers, their technique at times below, than technics of the Russian
