This has been the most compelling, absorbing lesson--I can't stop doing it! It makes me see the instrument in a new way expanding my understanding of alternate fingering, embouchure and larynx control. A crazy exercise that makes me practice more.
great stuff. I love it. Leo P. uses this left hand techniques brilliantly on the baritone sax. I do it at times with the right hand on a keyboard playing chords or melodic lines.
I went to a James Morrison concert quite a few years ago. He played trumpet and piano at the same time (one pitched in Bb, one in C!). Now we have no excuse to not take up the challenge.....
This is very helpful to me as I play keyboards as well. I can comp with my right hand on the organ and solo or do stabs with the left on the sax. very cool!
This is great fun and your solo as others have said is probably better than most of ours with 2 hands....so big respect! I would say the most difficult bit technically is bending down the 2nd octave G a full tone to the F. You being brilliant, made it sound convincing, but my effort was a real struggle and very wobbly. great idea though
If it is easier for you, try to bend up a little holding all three palm keys (as you press D, D# and F and only have to compensate for the missing E key)
Buon 2022, Peppe.
@@GetYourSaxTogether Dear Jamie, you're the best! I really enjoyed this left-hand performance. As Italian-native, I really struggle to follow lessons in the English language. Luckily, UA-cam has finally started offering subtitles for your videos. I am just an amateur musician, started Sax school a few years ago but enjoy little room and time to practice at my house. As such, I have started enjoying your shows on UA-cam as if I was the one playing. Many thanks for what you do for free, keep it up! Wishing you a great 2022, Peppe, from Solopaca (Italy)
ALL possible fingerings? Not sure about that! I’ve got one with most of the main ones though (including altissimo) www.getyoursaxtogether.com/fingerchart
What a great solo! I thought you might mention Rahsaan Roland Kirk who played one sax with one hand and another with the other--and often playing a drone note on a third! I believe he had his horns rigged to facilitate all that. After he suffered a right-side-debilitating stroke he continued performing on tenor or flute with only his left hand! But of course he had the "advantage" of being blind from early childhood.
Thanks! In my band I will often play a shaker while someone else is soloing, and would have to put it down in the bar before I come back in. I can use this technique in many songs to play the shaker all the way through the bar and make a smoother transition.
Fun stuff! I think you are downplaying the importance of this. Beyond tone matching some notes, I think people who have lost the use of the right hand or arm due to injuries or illnesses might see this as a legit way of playing the sax. It gives them quite the register to play with!
Yeh that’s true actually, I did think about saying that in the video, but I’m guessing there’s a relatively small number of people out there who’ve lost their right hand.
Thanks Jamie . A good fun lesson that that really could come in handy sometime . It reminds me of that old Chinese proverb : Man with hand in pocket feels cocky all day . ;-)
This is cool. I’m going to give this a try. This doesn’t add to the one handed playing, but kind of similar. I found a relatively easy way to get a low A on an alto. Play the low Bb and cover the bell by bringing one leg up and using your bent knee to cover the bell. Kind of gimmicky I know. But hey, it’s all about the show, isn’t it? 🎷🎷😊 Thanks again, Jamie and glad to see you’re better.
Thank you very much for this video Jamie, I have a disability, which means that I can’t use my right hand. Thanks to your video I can hopefully play a few notes on my new Yamaha YDS 150 digital saxophone.
Sigurd Rancher had a Saxophone especially made for him with NO KEYS ! Sigurd could play any song by over blowing overtones ! I know because I took a master class he taught in college .
Quite obviously and unequivocally a master of the saxophone with this totally amazing and incredible demonstration of one hand playing. Not relevant to the subject material of this video but being the master that you most assuredly are could you elucidate as to why there are no lady jazz subtoners, or do these gentle and some not so gentle folk do not like this effect or is it that subtening is an anatomic impossibility for them?
@@GetYourSaxTogether As a Master Saxophonist you must surely know the difference between the classical subtone and the jazz subtone. Man - you just reminded me - I DID used to play keyboards with my RH in one band, and I could sustain cool voicings that matched the note I was playing! Used to sound amazing. 😎
@@GetYourSaxTogether I have mostly played in bands as keyboard/guitar player. I am a very amateur sax player but would take to gigs and play on simple songs like mustang sally. For my solo I would hit chords on keyboard, step on sustain and play blues scale licks. Nice to have in the bag of tricks.

That blues solo was fantastic. I loved it! 👍👍👍
Thanks a lot!
Funny! Respect for the one-handed solo. Would look even cooler with a beer in your right hand.🙂
Fair point!

Gosh, Jamie, your solo was better than I can manage with three hands! Lol! Happy Sunday from Canada!

Hi Jamie, thanks for this and all of your videos. What is that thrill you do in the solo?
I think you mean trill, though it IS thrilling! It’s D to F. Hold your D palm key and trill the front F key.

Thanks David!
Didn't Sigurd Rascher play one that did't even have keys? I can completely see how this is possible.
Yes I believe he did!
Hhahaha That was so cool! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Ah - but if you made a mirror image (left-handed?) sax, you could play it with your right hand only!
And if you had one, you could play two saxes at the same time. There's a challenge!
That’s a thought!
The best reason is you can play keyboards with you right hand and bass pedals with your feet! Then the band leader should pay you 3 times.

with two hands, I am not even that fast..... :-)
