I've been dicking around for half an hour trying to rotate my gradient mask. Gave up, saw this vid, now I feel unstoppable editing my landscapes. Thanks Rico!
@The Last Sword create a new instance. So there are three little symbols on the top right of a module. The first one is where you can create a new instance, or duplicate one etc. The second one is to reset the mask, third one is for presets. You can't use two masks within one instance if both of them have different values. That's why you need to create a new one. Let me know if that helps :)
Your content is great! Maybe this is a dim question, but could you point me to where you make/find the Exposure 1 module? I am struggling to change the exposure of just the mask.
Thanks Mark! Much appreciated! I'll make a seperate video on the parametric mask. Hopefully the two of them together will help a lot of people use masks efficiently.
@@mak-j2o I'm not sure why you want to use a mask on the retouch module. Since you're only retouching a specific part anyway. So it makes masks obsolete I guess?
@RicoResolves what is mask obsolete? Basically I have a picture from a lake from cross my window. I want to remove the lamppost and road sign posts. Wanted to try remove and and blend the road/trees in the background over them.
@mak-j2o send me the photo at info@ricoresolves.com and I'll have a go myself this week. That said, you don't need a mask for that. With obsolete I meant it's unnecessary to create a mask. Because you're only going to retouch the things you want to retouch. So a mask is pointless I guess
In my opinion very useful thing you forgot to mention: While creating a path-mask you can make sharp corners by ctrl-clicking! Another thing you didn't mention is that when using an ellipse-mask you can change the feathering mode by shift-clicking from equal distance to proportional distance to the main mask (I hope that makes sense...).
Nicccce 😎 Always something new in it for me. One small addition - would be of no use for this photo but for many photos with man-made elements in it. If you use the path tool for a selection press the Ctrl button to draw straight lines 😉
@@@RicoResolves Has nothing to do with masks, but here is a cool preview of some functions of *darktable 3.0* 😎😎 ua-cam.com/video/UuB9khJIrDI/v-deo.html It's getting better and better!
One of the best explanations I have seen is in the following thread...scroll down to comment 30 of 35..there are a series of screenshots and it becomes clear how the output slider is used....in short lets say you create a mask using the input sliders to select an area of the image based on one range...after your module is applied some of the area in the mask may be altered as you intended and some of it may go out of range so you can further restrict the module actions by setting criteria that determine the ultimate output of the module by setting limits with the output sliders....check out this post and it will make sense...far better than me discuss.pixls.us/t/sqsa-darktable-short-question-short-answer/5103/30 Also if you are a member of the DT facebook group I have posted a document explaining the use of multiple drawn mask and the different ways they can be configured to create your final overall map....it is in the files section of the group...
For reasons unknown to me, I am only getting the solid line on the graduated filter. I am not getting the dotted feathering lines as you have demonstrated. Any thoughts?
You can't. You can only create different masks that use the same input. If you want to give one mask less exposure and another mask more exposure, you'll need more than one instance.
Hello there. I dont knoe how to activate the masks in the last version of darktable. I click on the mask I want and it still shows the entire image as being affected.
Hi Lilian, welcome back to my channel. There is a small button in the module (under mask menu) that will show a yellow color. Everything in yellow will be affected.
Thanks! That was helpful. Now I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to make an overall adjustment in one module (let's say, saturation) and then create a mask to work on only a part of the image while preserving the adjustments made previously for the whole image.
I have an image of a person looking up at the sky and i want to add stars that i took with another photo, I want to mask it n, is this possible in darktable?
Only when I select Gradient mask, it covers entire image, even though I can see my dark point and light arrow. Anyone know why? The image is already cropped but the mask covers entire image for some reason. I do not have any other settings changed under mask.

Awesome man, that's great to hear!
The best explanation of masks that I have seen - and I have seen a lot.
Thank you Mike, that is very kind of you and I'm glad to hear it!
Your tutorial is one of the few that is actually enjoyable to watch, because you explain every step in the procedure.
Thanks Arjen, I appreciate your kind words

best instruction about working with masks in darktable ever seen
Thanks Johannes!
I just started with Darktable. Your tutorials are helpfull!
Awesome! I hope you will enjoy darktable a lot
i LOVE YOU TY, i was looking how to change the gradient orientation and you saved me
Hahaha good to hear this video helped you!
Great tutorial, thanks!
You're welcome Marco!
Great tip about doing the lens correction last.
Thank you Carol!
Great tutorial and a great tool. Many thanks, now I get it.
Good to hear Frerk!

If you create a new instance of a module, it automatically labels it 1/2/3 etc. hope this helps!
@@RicoResolves Just getting back to this adventure, thank you!!
Great tutorial. You showed how to add a point to a path, but how do you delete one? Thanks
Right mouse button!
Great tutorial, can hardly waiting for the parametric mask tutorial. Keep up the great work !!
Thank you Phil, much appreciated!
thanks for making it all a little bit clearer i now get how to make a mask :)
Awesome!
Cool tutorial. I waiting for more about Darktable's possibilities :)
Thanks Lukasz! More will definitely follow!
Great explanation! Masks are one of those things some people just never understand, but this should rectify that!!!
Thanks Mark! Much appreciated! I'll make a seperate video on the parametric mask. Hopefully the two of them together will help a lot of people use masks efficiently.
thanks Rico , great video , i wish you would want to do that on parametric too .
I think I addressed that in a different video

The input and ouput slider for the parametric mask next... I haven't really grasp the concept or difference...
Yes, I will address that to the best of my ability!

Maybe they are extended. Scroll the mouse wheel to see if they come back
Thaks that helped alot!
Yes you can! But you'll need a combination of darktable and GIMP!
Nice video. Does the brush mask have an auto (edge-aware) feature like in Lightroom?
Unfortunately it doesn't!
Nice Video but how can i create two masks in the same setting without them influencing eachother
You can't. You can only create different masks that use the same input. If you want to give one mask less exposure and another mask more exposure, you'll need more than one instance.
@@RicoResolves OK thank you
Very good explanation and demonstration. Thank you.
Thank you for leaving a comment. I'm glad you like this video!
Can this program do photo bracketing like in Lightroom?
You can merge photos yes, but it doesn't auto align

You can easily do that with masking and a new instance. Or by duplicating the instance.

Unfortunately this isn't possible in darktable but can be achieved in GIMP. Sorry for the late reply.
