    One thing I also noticed was how in particular Obito died.
    When Asuma asks Shikamaru who the “king” is on the shogi board, Shikamaru responds with saying that the king is the Hokage. Asuma then teaches him that the “king” is the next generation. The ones that will come after him and inherit.
    Shogi is the Japanese variant of chess and just like in chess, the “King” is the most protected piece on the board. It has other pieces standing in front of it.
    This neatly falls in line with Naruto’s evolved path to becoming the Hokage.
    The Hokage is the one that walks in front, but why is he walking in front?? He is walking in front to protect those that will come after, the next generation.
    In this regard, Obito’s death was a symbolic representation of this.
    He died acting as a shield to Naruto, the representation of the next generation. If only for a moment, he walked the front.
    He died as a Hokage should. Protecting the most important piece on the shogi board.

I love him, I love all his roles, as the nicest kid in the village, to mentally destroyed teenager, a completely broken cold hearted villain and a villain who regrets it all as he is forced to remember who he was, and sees the hope he thought couldn’t exist in Naruto

    I have nothing but appreciation for the videos you put out. Naruto is a series whose legacy feels like it is constantly being trampled on and covered in mud by an entourage of a very vocal minority that completely disregards what this series has to offer below the surface. It feels almost poetic that a show that emphasizes the importance of looking beyond one's hatred and finding resolution through understanding more often than not is treated with contempt and misunderstanding by so many people. Nowadays, trying to create a conversation about this series to a wider group of people seems meaningless in and of itself - especially because you will get shrugged off with the standard "let people hate things" retort or get mocked with opinions that are in bad faith with no room for understanding, so I always feel very happy when I get to watch your videos where I feel like the series I grew up with won't be remembered as a pile of trash.

    I honestly think Obito suffered from the sunk cost fallacy. I feel like at some point in his life he only pursued Madara’s dream because he was already heavily invested in seeing it through. Yes this along with having lost those most important, and then thirdly the manipulation and fail-safes that Madara and zetsu put into place to help further prevent him from going back on stuff. Obito knew about whatever seal was on his heart, I'm sure he was smart enough to realize that he was brought into the sway of Madara Uchiha who was pretty much the most powerful Uchiha in recent memory. Obito probably couldn't even grasp the amount of things that may have been in place, genjutsu, seals, traps that he could have fallen into had he decided to sway from the path. I think at the very end he realized he had his opportunity to take the reins of the plan that he had been working on for so long

    I get why a lot of people's knee-jerk reaction (including mine) to the 'coolest guy' line was utter disdain but I do also get that it wasn't Kishimoto saying "yeah Obito's sins are all forgiven." It was Naruto choosing to value the good in a person who mirrored himself in many ways and despite a lifetime of terrible choices chose to spend his last moments helping save the world. Given Naruto has seen inside Obito's heart this isn't a statement of blind naivety but informed optimism. Your Naruto content continues to be fantastic, I cannot wait for when you do the big bad Uchiha himself next.

      The whole point of this scene is not to take his words at face value because they're coming from an actual hypocrite. If Neji actually believed that, he would NEVER HAVE TRIED TO KILL HINATA!!!! If that spiel was true in any regard to the series, THEN NARUTO WOULD HAVE KILLED SASUKE!!!! It's also important to take note that in the scope of the series and character itself Obito is not only Obito, he's Madara Uchiha, No one and Obito Uchiha himself.
    His masks is symbolic of his many natures during this journey.
    So when Naruto appreciated Obito he specifically mentioned the one who wants to become hokage aka Obito Uchiha.
    Naruto being a mainstream shonen and something that can resonate with any ordinary person unfortunately isn't privileged to share these themes within the story and is often viewed with a lens of "realism" which is where people wrong themself. It does provide many lessons one can take home but understanding it's characters with respect to the series should also be acknowledged.

    Obito gets too much shade. Yeah, everyone in Naruto's gone through grief. But when Obito went through it, he was offered a way out. He was a kid going through the grief of loss and betrayal, and was offered a way out of that grief. For that reason, Obito never had to confront his grief. He never had to accept it. He spent his life running away from that grief. The pain he went through was like a wound. Sure, a wound will heal without proper treatment. But it'll become infected. Even though the initial wound is healed, it's lack of proper care still keeps hurting you. And even if it did heal right, by the time he was an adult, he'd already killed his master anyway. He was in too deep to go back. Honestly, anyone would have done the same in his position. It's so much easier to run from grief than it is to face it. The only reason we face our grief in life is because we have to. And even then, people still find ways to run from it.

    Another awesome video by a youtuber who is nothing but awesome to me!
    It always bothered me that what made Obito start a whole war was that the girl he had feelings for died, at least that's what I believed for a long time. But watching your video I came to a realization of my own, that his love was never requited to begin with. Whether Rin lived or died wouldn't matter from that perspective because she would never be with him as a romantic interest. And he is shown again and again to be aware of that fact, which is why the "but Rin likes Kakashi" thing is important. So than his reason for losing hope would of course be different, that being that he lost his only source of light and hope.

      I believe that kishimoto wanted to give Obito solace after a long life of torment. But I also do see your point, it kinda defeats the point doesn’t it, I mean… Obito coming back to light on his own terms with the help of Naruto just to what? Just to end up being dependent on Rin for happiness and peace again? That’s back to stage 1 and we all know that he is no longer the same vulnerable orphan child that he was when he needed Rin. Obito received too vanilla ending considering the merit of his character and the conclusion he instead deserved.

That scene, Naruto’s Neji speech (also against the Neji was right narrative), Naruto vs gaara moment where he ramps up to protect his comrades, the zabuza grave speech and the gaara war speech are like the peaks of feeling the core themes in Naruto. I still don’t love the “coolest guy” comment but I do think Obito is *objectively* very cool. Subjectively he committed many unforgivable sins, albeit as a result of madara’s masterminding and manipulation. It’s not that I disagree with the comment, but that I disagree that anyone should be saying it after all the crimes committed by Obito. The kamui fighting style, the way he utilized the rinnegan with the 6 jinchuriki, and the hashirama cells making him an absolute tank (survived rakiri to the heart, rinne-rebirth, and the extraction of the ten tails in succession, yet this is circumstantial as black zetsu kept him alive) make him a unique and interesting character. Also, we all love kakashi, and the plot twist that tobi-fake madara-“no one” was actually Obito was a little telegraphed but still very enjoyable in my opinion.

  • @Reality-Distortion
    @Reality-Distortion 2 роки тому +9

    While it's great video as usual, I wouldn't go as far to say that saving the world was an afterthought to him. Or that his refutation line towards Kakashi is inaccurate. Like you yourself said, the persona of Madara the saviour consumed him. His beliefs were not disingenious and self-centred. Him extending his hand towards Kakashi in his dimension as well as Shinobi Alliance after using the God Tree, were signs of real compassion that he didn't need to show.
    My point is, Infinite Tsukuyomi are not pretenses he consciously uses to hide his selfish desire. It's a honest ideology that managed to successfully suppress the root of his suffering. Rin obviously was the trigger but it didn't stop him from fully adopting Madara's thinking along the way.
    Somewhat offtopic but
    I think the true biggest difference between him (as well as Nagato or Sasuke) and Madara is that Madara doesn't try to reject his selfish side. Of course it's easy to him, his wants boil down to fighting, which is easy to compromise with his selfless goals (although they still get in the way of each other). This is why Madara could NEVER be talk no jutsu'd. Even if Naruto watched his entire life unfold, it could never happen. Madara, unlike the other big 3 utilitarian antagonists, never rejected the part of him that wants to enjoy living. He never fell trap to basing his entire being on an ideology that distracts him from his trauma and loneliness. Nagato, Obito and Sasuke could be cracked with words for that very reason. Where as Madara, despite living by an ideology that he believes in, knew all along that doing only what you have to and not what you want to isn't a way to live for a human. That's why he embraced and basically personified human duality.

      I’m not sure I fully understand your first paragraph but I ABSOLUTELY love your second paragraph about Madara.
      Madara NEVER lied to himself, nor hated others for what had happened to him like Obito, Nagato, and the rest.
      Madara saw the bigger picture that in the grand scheme of things, we are all losers in this game of life.
      The only time Madara felt joy in his life was when he was fighting, that was the only thing he grew up doing, the only thing he was taught, the only thing he had left. He had lost his family, trust of his clan, his best friend stabbed him in the back, all he had left was the fight, the only thing that wasn’t taken away from him.

    • @Reality-Distortion
      @Reality-Distortion 2 роки тому +3

      @@charleschiemekaekeogu6908 "nor hated others for what had happened to him" - Well, he flat out admitted he waited a long time to take revenge on Tobirama for killing his brother. That's the one exception. But yeah, everything else checks. I think it's best seen when you compare scenes of all the 4 mentioned characters when they decide on their dark messiah path. Nagato after returning from Hanzo's trap fully commits to his philosophy of pain when he brings Yahiko's body to him, Obito says it doesn't matter in the slightest whether Kakashi lives or dies and steps forward following an extremist pragmatic stance telling to pursue that which is useful while devaluing the truth and finally Sasuke who decides to show the world how wrong it's status quo is by becoming it's necessary totalitarian symbol of hatred until the world's end. But Madara instead on his way out says he's looking forward to the battles he will fight with Hashirama. The original individuality and the idea coexisting. His beliefs aren't an excuse to execute his desires but he also doesn't commit to them so fully to blind him from his desires; most likely because he was already grown up and his cynicism developed steadily, while the other 3 had it all come down upon them to process in their teen years. Then again, I can't blame them. Madara certainly has a heart but it's his violent uniqueness that lets him achieve such an internal (though still imperfect) compromise. Something which those getting their hands dirty while dreaming only of peaceful, better life can never fully attain.

      @@Reality-Distortion Madara DISLIKED Tobirama but he didn’t HATE Tobirama, Madara didn’t go out of his way to harm or take revenge on Tobirama.
      Even when the Hokages were revived, the first man Madara acknowledged was Hashirama, his old friend, not the man who k111ed his brother standing beside him.
      My point is Madara DIDN’T BLAME Tobirama for Izuna’s death, he just saw it as one of the consequences of their reality. Even if it wasn’t Tobirama, someone else or another Senju could have k111ed Izuna.
      In fact, the only reason Madara and Tobirama fought was because Tobirama literally attacked first and Madara defended himself.
      Even when Madara said “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time”, Madara also said “But you are merely a moving corpse so it’s hardly fulfilling”.
      Madara acknowledged the futility of it all and even explained his actions and plans clearly to Tobirama, don’t you find it ironic that Tobirama was the ONE man Madara took his time to explain his plans to (Apart from Obito obviously)?
      Madara didn’t have to explain himself to anyone, LEAST of all Tobirama but he went out of his way to explain his philosophy and prove he wasn’t doing all of these out of spite or hate for humanity or the world but as a cure for it all.
      A Cure for humanity’s duality and curse of hatred.
      There wasn’t a single contempt in his voice to Tobirama, just the hollowness of their situation.

      @@Reality-Distortion Also, I love how you encapsulated how Madara could achieve an internal compromise between his desire for peace and his love for battle.
      Madara’s philosophy was built more steadily over the years rather than a singular catastrophe that caused a 180 degree switch in his beliefs.
      In fact, Madara is the only SYMPATHETIC villain in Naruto who you could argue was the SAME from his beginning to the end, he only matured which would explain why Hashirama could always recognize him as the same kid he grew up with.
      It’s really nice to see someone with a lot of appreciation and understanding for a character.
      I feel like Madara is one of those characters that are so cool and badass that it shrouds their depth to the extent that people fail to see how enriching the character is.

    The existence of a canonical, pretty decent seeming, after life that's relatively easy to confirm sorta takes the wind out of project tsukoyomi's sails a bit. Like, Madera and Obito really out there wanting to make the Matrix when Heaven was just already a real thing that had pretty much what they wanted?
    Though I guess on some level definite heaven/heaven-analogues always ruin the stakes/logic/motivation of narratives involving death or suffering as a key plot point...

      Keep in mind that they don't seem to have the same knowledge we do, and even then, the people who want "Heaven on Earth" are fanatical. For them the afterlife is not enough. One of them ran away from Death. So did others. the knowledge is more that souls exists, you can bring them back from... something, you don't know what, and that those souls do not remember the afterlife. The "not remember the afterlife" is quite common, was quite common. The ideea is that when you die you get knowledge way beyond that on Earth, and when you go back you forget most of it.

    I kind of hoped that one day you could do a video on Obito & Kakashi and their "Masks"... Although I guess it's still possible.
    Obito the coolest Guy.
    ====
    I really like this breakdown especially on the community the tombstone: "Neji was always right."
    Individuality that kind of helps me with my view...
    Claims to be no one. Wishes to be no one.
    Lost Light...
    Would it be different if anything were to change that's what I believe... That it wouldn't have the situations put into place wouldn't have mattered had no one been left or just another one.
    The whole point was to show the darkness that existed and try to shroud them within in it...
    Although they never truly would fall down into that darkness and maybe that's because even the man behind them thought that the darkness was the light and to a degree it means their views truly were always looking for the light in their own way.
    Maybe no ones too far off the light but simply have different paths of looking for it and whether we can put them back on the path of light depends on the "light" we are chasing.
    =====
    I also really like this "Shortcut route" as it reminds of Naruto saying that there is no Shortcut to being Hokage and when it comes down to it the War arc does feel like it's about everyone fighting to become "Hokage".
    The dimension he went to or the dimension he was connected to.
    =
    This part of Obito vs Naruto and the hope that still exists.
    Stability and their will the thing that could be broken because they may have always doubted their path.
    ====
    "Staying True." Such an interesting concept in the Naruto world.
    Madara & Obito the inability to escape the past.
    Something I can't escape either.
    Looking at the individual.
    Not the hate.
    Not at the person who killed his parents.
    Not at the person who killed so many.
    Not seeing them as a title.
    Not seeing them as a tool.
    Trying to look at "THEM".
    ====
    I really like Obito protecting Naruto the one who nearly killed him at the start saved him at the end.
    ======
    You have also shown that similar situations that happened to me have also affected you and many others with this community.
    Believing something the community started although mine wasn't related to lines like this or beliefs I guess except for Naruto not being an underdog, Rock Lee should be the main character, Hinata > Sakura in strength and most regards without analyzing the series, and a few more really I guess it related to certain views and the power scale was out of control as characters like Kabuto and people like that even Itachi, Minato, and many others were underrated and if you had a character that looked like fodder or didn't appear much or existed in a movie or filler they were also just seen as fodder without knowing the less you appeared and the less cool you looked the weaker you were or perceived as.
    Characters like Kid Lee would probably be some of the strongest Characters along with 1 Tail Naruto and CMS2 Sasuke. I think I played many fan games that depicted those being the big 3 but with what I know now about Scaling even that Lee with all 5 Gates might not even be in the same tier as 1 Tail Naruto.
    Also Kakashi might have sometimes been depicted above them because Jonin and Sharingan the power scale back then was so weird I guess because it focused more on opinion and people being held back by their beliefs that such power couldn't exist or if it wasn't shown to them in a form that looked cool then it didn't exist.
    Emotion swayed opinions and these opinions would be taken by others as either their own opinion or fact and these would spread as well creating their own effect maybe just a drop at the start, maybe rain later, maybe a wave? Maybe it became a Tsunami and drowned out the truth for many people.
    =====
    I guess what I'm trying to say is that all of us stumble and might look at the world in ways that we don't wish to but as long as we can find ourselves then we can eventually stand up.
    Even if we need help to do it.
    And for me... It's nice to know that I might not have been alone in doubting my past but being able to get past it.
    =
    Sorry I'm quite wordy but maybe most of my words fall on deaf ears or just are not words that can "reach" anyone but maybe that's not the point of the words.
    Overall:
    A Great video.

    Despair and Hope are two halves of the same coin. Without one, there is no other. If naruto didn’t go through with his pain he would have never become Hokage
