Some of the Tunnels run an incredible distance. Old parts of Queens University in the area have over 4 miles of tunnels. The old Rockwood building had tunnels running to the Kingston Pen, the Quarry in Portsmouth, the boiler room and Laundry facilities on the property as well as to the Coal Dock. Part of the building collapsed last century, however, the outline of it is noticed in the brickwork. Rockwood has several basements. It appears the video only showed the mechanical level, which is rather upgraded. However, those small openings in the lower parts of the walls, if they would have looked closer, they would be able to see old locking mechanisms as they were once entry points to the Depressive cells. The lower wards would have the hydrotherapy cells as well as several medical research rooms. Many of the older areas that were considered disciplinary and basically torture, were removed or filled in. The entire building had to have the asbestos and urea formaldehyde removed in order for it to be safe for filming crews. They use the premises for movies, etc. Those large grey tubes are bringing in fresh air and removing toxic particles. All the paint, mortar, bricks, insulation, tiles, etc. had to be cleared, removed and/or cleaned so it's no longer toxic. Some areas are still closed off for that reason. Most cells lacked plumbing in the higher secured areas. Sinks and bathing areas were added around 1951. Only select parts were used until the newer Westwood building was opened in 1957. The old Rockwood would still be be used but only for extreme dangerous and elderly, until around 1993. In 2000, the building was officially condemned and closed for patient detainment and care. Eventually, the Westwood building was replaced with the new Providence Care Hospital on the same location, and opened in 2017. However, the old Rockwood Asylum building is still up as it's taken on a Historic Building as it was built back in 1859.
I walk there every day. The history of Rockwood is interesting because the intentions were for rehabilitation. They had ice hockey on the lake in the winter, birdwatching, sketching, the greenhouse which was assisted by patients who helped grow food. For the patients with more mild illnesses their initial plan was on rehab and return to the community. But the building is so desolate now it does look scary. And I would be hesitant to go inside without a mask due to the asbestos. You guys are very brave. I once saw a fox jump thru a broken window and run inside. What you said about the footsteps sounds pretty frightening. Even though they did have good intentions with the facility I am sure there are many stories where the staff were just as, or more dangerous than the patients. I am sure there are many horrific and heart breaking stories held inside those walls.

You basically confirmed a few things I was always interested in knowing! I was in about 7 years ago, unfortunately didn’t get to see the basement. From the articles I’ve read and people locally I’ve met that worked there, the tunnels were suppose to connect to the Kingston Pen just up the road near Portsmouth. Also the rooms that looked walled off down there could have been used in the early days when lobotomy was taking place. There used to be surgical rooms with large tables somewhere in the basement.
I went to go see this place a few days ago. It was so cool to see, there's so much sad but fascinating history there. I wish I could have gone inside.....
Wow! There is barely even any dust on the handrails of these stairs. I bet the workers come in weekly or bi-weekly to clean out the poo and dead birds and such. ALL the buildings on those grounds, not just that one, are very well kept up and nearly just as old. Green room with brown floor and cabinet was nurses station or storage for medical supplies or something, depending on how many rooms with sinks, maybe were "treatment rooms" pink, green, yellow are all calming colors, great for crazy people like me, and especially how pale those are. That place had sections for the mildly crazy and nonviolent and place for the violently insane. Nonviolent allowed out of cells day time, violently not so much.. kept those in the dark, hoping they sleep.. lol
I like that you now talk a bit more and add some music in your video's! I like that you are trying new stuff, you are definitely stepping up your video game! ^^
We were doing some photography from the outside. Had a chat with security, as they kept circling the building every five minutes in a vehicle. We joking ask if they caught any urban explorers. They said they catch quite a few now that they installed motion sensors. Pictures or Video does not do this place justice. Just walking around the outside, gives the sense of evil and foreboding. Just a short walk up the street, is the new mental health facility. It's a great contrast in how far we advanced.
@@Freaktography it's weird at least from my personal perspective for two years I lived and went to school on the grounds of the psychiatric hospitals when Rockwood was serving as Penrose and While I found the place had some sense of foreboding I never really paid attention to it and what it used to be. I mean yeah people told me it was the old kingston psychiatric hospital but again when you're a tween almost teen the scary history stuff doesn't register.
Many inmates suffered terribly and died at the Rockwood Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Many are buried in mass, unmarked graves. There was a time when a person could be committed by a disgruntled spouse or parent or an elderly or difficulty parent could be committed. It somehow seems wrong to this viewer that someone going through the building and filming it would think that an inmate trying to peer through a tightly woven metal window cage or bar system, that at that time would not have been able to have been opened by the inmate afforded a pleasant view of the water. With such tightly woven bars it is doubtful the water was visible and if it were, I have to wonder if being so close, yet so far from it would have been a delight or torture. For my part, I suspect the latter given the abuses that went on in that facility. It is a dark chapter in our history and should be, IMHO, remembered as it was for its inmates - a hell hole of abuse, terror, misery and death for too many forgotten souls.
I love this building! i walked by it the other day. As someone who did masonry work for a period of time I find the exterior to be beautiful|! the quions have a Crendall finish, segmental archways everywhere, and plinth stones underneath many of the sill stones! Basement windows and doorways have been bricked up over the years it seems. I'm curious as to what the origional building there was, as there is a portion of the building on the West side with original brick and gable brick that was evidently tied in to the limestone at a later date. anyone aware of the original history?
@@Freaktography yes the attic has signatures from 1911 when I was working there there were a few weird things happening to us like footsteps no one there perfume smell that would go by you like someone walked by nobody there hair on arms and legs felt like static then go away orbs a lot of stuff
This building is littered with friable asbestos pipe insulation debris. You should be wearing AT LEAST a Tyvek suit and a half-face respirator if you're going to explore.

I don't believe they have motion sensors, probably said that to keep you out. It was really good inside!!

Looks much older than we're told compared to everything else built in the era.

Hey! Who did you contact to get into this place. I've been in once to Investigate, I want to go again!
I didn't contact anyone, they left a door open
It's disgusting anyone would make light of this place. No empathy or reverence for the people who were forced to be here and what they went through!
the large ventilation lines, potentially something to do for asbestos abatement??
Freaktography it's good that the building is being preserved and not left to rot

Only got to explore the outside. Would LOVE to explore the inside someday, but probably not possible due the place being heavily secured...
This place is in such good condition. Looks awesome!
thank you!
Went on ghost and mystery tour it stop at this place they passed around a book with ghost photos in it very and I say very creepy
I was once looking at the tour bus through a window in the basement at night LOL, I wonder if anyone saw me and thought i was a ghost
I put all the heat ducts in there in 2014
great place eh?

Amazing video!
I worked there after they changed the name to Penrose.
I went to school for a bit further down on the property.
Should you be breathing the air in these places?
I don't think so.
Asbolutely not. It's Type 2 entry to even get in this building. Half-face respirator at minimum
