- The L-16 Grasshopper is the militarized version of the Aeronca Champ and was used extensively in the Korean and Vietnam wars as an observation/liaison aircraft. Trevor Edie is a qualified fight instructor in the L-16 and he gives us a brief history of the airplane as well as what it is like to fly the Grasshopper.
If you'd like to learn more about the aircraft and potentially join the flying club that operates the L-16 visit:

This was a great video. Thanks for posting and bringing back pleasant memories. The L16A that I flew in 1964 was maintained and flown by St. Louis Squadron 2 of the Civil Air Patrol, Missouri. Wing. I was the Commanding Officer at that time. It was based at Smartt Field in St. Charles County and had the registration number N6081V. It had mechanical brakes and an 85 hp engine that was fuel injected - no carburetor heat. Many pleasant hours were spent giving cadets orientation flights, for many, it was their first airplane ride. Thanks for keeping this airplane alive and well.
Great interview with Trevor, Thanks!

@@PilotPhotog - Your Welcome
Too nice video with clear explaining of this aircraft characters and used after 2nd world war ...in successful and effective using of this aircraft...in surfaces looking at appears as simple training or touristy plane thanks for sending
Trevor, wonderful video and I love your plane. I'm in the process of purchasing a 1947 L-16A and getting my tail wheel endorsement. Like you I love to go out and work on my skills, short take offs and landings, cross-wind landings and all the other skills a good pilot needs to have. It will be a change from the tricycle gear that I've been flying, but I'm ready for a new adventure. Blue skies mate. Brian
I learned to fly a long time ago in (mostly) an Aeronca Champ 7AC with 65 hp. I can only imagine what it would be like with 85 or 90 hp!
He's flying over the beach and he's worried about dolphins? How bout "Did you see the color of that thong"!
Nah he's keeping the vid audience friendly ☺️
At 3:10 Trevor noted the plane was gotten from St. Augustine. Actually it was purchased from a gentleman in Missouri. I almost purchased this beautiful plane, but missed out. I spent an afternoon w/ the previous owner - wonderful man. Some tidbits - the Canadians required additional inspection ports thus the added inspection panels under the wings. The 85 HP engines were "A" models, those w/ 90 HP engines were "B" models. Hopefully the school is enjoying the aircraft they got a great deal on it and hopefully they will keep it in great operating condition!
The A version had mechanical brakes. The B version had hydraulic brakes.
Very informative! I'm coming to Florida this month (west cost) and was looking at doing a tail wheel endorsement. The place I am looking at has an L16.
Chris thank you and glad you liked it. The L16 is a great airplane to fly and an excellent way to get your tail wheel endorsement. If you don’t mind, comment here when you are done and let me know how it goes!
I just bought a 1964 Aeronca project with the greenhouse option, Im pretty excited about seeing it come together.
Brianne C awesome! It’s a fun flying airplane - please share pics/vids as able.
