I love how the scene of Gamagoori falling off of the building works from a story standpoint as well. Running in the halls is against the rules, so he chooses to jump out of the window knowing that A. It's technically not against the rules, and B. He'd get there faster.
holy shit you're right. this is amaznig writing lmao
That’s clever characterization. From that we know he is both a disciplined teacher’s pet but still a total badass.
I never noticed that. Man I love this show
By that logic how come busting through the door and smashing it into pieces especially during a class is allowed ?
Because the rule book probably has nothing against "Smashing doors into pieces".
This show is such a masterpiece. I really wish I didn't have to try so damn hard to convince people it's more than half-naked cartoon girls with swords.
Lol so true. I just finished this anime and I never thought I would look past so much fan service for the story
Yeah this animes ending made me cry like so hard I was heart broke the ending since when rureko falls to the earth and what senkest said hit me hard.
SAME!
I wished it wasn't removed from netflix.
Mabra!! It’s back on NETFLIX!!
Gamagoori only has one size: bigger than you.
Phuckin hilarious
And I love that more often than not, this is entirely consistent :D Even in the OVA when Ryuuko's Scissor Blades go Super Saiyan, he's still the largest *character* on screen, despite being severely dwarfed by the blades
Teleport him to ATTACK ON TITAN
?: That Titan is talking?!
Mikasa: HE'S NOT A TITAN!
Eren: WHAT Do you mean HE...? Mikasa, why are you blushing ARMIN DID YOU JUST SHOUT A DOZEN BAD WORDS? THAT'S A HORSE MAN
Levi: That's not a centaur, you idiot. Pull it together, people
Ira(later on) ....WHO KICKED MY BALLS?
EVERYONE ELSE: Captain Levi did!
Gamagoori falling in the background during the flee down the staircase is still, to this day, one of my favorite comedic takes from an opening episode of any show, ever.
I've seen it multiple times, and every time it's absolutely hilarious to me.
It the best like no ever was
His maniacal, enthusiastic laughter only helps the moment.
This.. i love how the kid runs so frantically down a complicated, inefficient path as gamagoori calmly skydives down to meet him, all while tracking his location perfectly through the windows.
plus, he's a stickler for rules and running in the halls is prohibited, so jumping out the window solves the problem
@@CALKULTIK clearly, the kid should have jumped out the window. What a fool.
I feel the need to point out that all of this was put into a TWO MINUTE SCENE!!!
EVERY FRAME IS PLATINUM!!!
One of my favourite things from Kill la Kill is the scene of Ryuko throwing the chair down and stepping on it. Someone put up a post with each frame and they are all fantastic.
Arro3 Yesss. Literally watched that scene 3 times in a row. It was so satisfying for some reason
I like this fact: if you gonna watch opening scene without sound - you will still understand what is happening. This is all what cinema is about
(I hope you understand my comment :[ )
Using youtube's yellow dollar sign for censorship. Clever.
Oh wow, I looked at the date and I realized this is like the first time I had ever seen it before. Before everyone started doing it that is.
This editing is art, never really appreciated Davoo's work till now. You are a master of your craft
that's nice man
I just got Deja Vu
I have been in this vid before
Oh god, not that song.
Higher on the street
AND I KNOW ITS MY TIME TO GO!!!
Such a sticky song
Arin Hanson is a terrible gamer.
I want to rewatch Kill la Kill, again.
Ive seen it 3 times alone, 4 with friends, 1 with gf and I can still rewatch it, over and over again. True masterpiece.
Maohky Sanchez boi you have a girlfriend who actually is willing to get past the fan service?! Lucky man.
Same
Thanks to the original video I decided to watch Kill la kill. Now it's one of my fav. shows and I'm a total Trigger-Fangirl. I'm so glad I randomly clicked on the video back then.
Also: New Version looks fantastic, my god I love this opening scene.
Watch Gurren Laggan.
Already watched it, is another from my fav. shows ^^
I don't even like anime and this video made me love this shit.
@@8bitdiedie Didn't like Gurren Lagann at all
"Gamagori is at his actual size now"... Dude, he HAS NO 'ACTUAL SIZE ', he's always different, that's kind of the joke.
Q: How tall is Gamagoori?
A: Taller than you.
One thing that's even cooler is that the music that players during the student's escape comes to an extremely abrupt halt when he opens the door to Gamagori, signifying that the chase is both literally and figurately over.
9:00 something you forgot to mention and also my favorite part of that frame is how dirty the face and the hands of the boy are and how impeccable the uniform is, highlighting the importance of even a 1 star uniform there and how big of a difference makes just wearing the weakest one we see on the entire show. Truly magnificent!
This scene got me hooked on the show. When I saw Ryuko in front of the large towering city, I knew I was in for a ride.
Holy shit Davoo, you really outdone yourself with this one.
Listening to Digibro talk about Kill la Kill is like ASMR to me.
This is the best opening scene in history. Tells you everything you need to understand the story without any exposition dumps in a short yet exciting scene.
10:04
Also, if we were to sillhoute everything we wouldn't even notice the kid, just Gamagori's body shape, further deepening the idea of how strong his presence is.
I've always said it. Kill la Kill has the greatest 5 minute introduction of any anime. The amount of worldbuilding and characterization in that first part is insane. It smoothly and explosively takes us into the world of Kill la Kill and its story.
So nice, I'll watch it twice.
Do you know where can I watch it
English dub please :)
I only had to see half an episode of this before I smiled and went "yep. This show is fucking awesome." And it has continued to be an absolute joy to watch so far. From the giant kanji that appear whenever someone is introduced or does a big attack, to the way shots are blocked out to maximize drama or comedy, to how every flashback is delivered in a 4:3 aspect ratio with an "old anime" artstyle, this show never disappoints with its visuals. And its script is surprisingly clever as well.
Thanks for recommending it.
This show was such a joy to watch. The first anime I ever dipped my toes into, and I find it unlikely that I'll find another show that matches the sheer happiness I felt watching every episode. I just wish I didn't have to feel so embarrassed when trying to watch this with a friend. On my own, I completely ignored all the fan service, by the end of the show it was just another joke to laugh at. But when I'm with a friend, I'm acutely aware that Ryuko is almost naked in every fight scene.
I never noticed gamagori's face when he's falling out of the window. It's amazing
6:26 I see what you did there, Davoo. Nice.
That was great, yes
Wow, I totally missed that detail, amazing stuff
I don't I was just confused
I am glad this one survived the purge.
what even happened?
@@Cykaima The troonery
I also love Kill La Kill but it just doesn't sit right with me to see Digibro talk about something he actually likes.
You mean like he does in at least 90% of his videos?
Himitsu
Now let's compare the videos which most people have watched
lol
I like it when he talks about stuff he likes instead of dislikes :P
I look at it the same way. I'm not too interested in hearing what's bad. I want to hear what's good and what can increase my enjoyment of watching anime.
I'm beginning to love Kill La Kill videos just from its animation alone. Anyway, I never had a problem with its opening scene, rather enjoying for the reasons you brought up.
Amazing! This will help me through my animation career! Specially in my storyboarding class 💕
Thank you for remastering this, I loved this video
Lul i literally just watched last episode of Kill La Kill. Like 20 mins ago. What a timing :o
Saato hey, me too!
I have to come back to this scene every now and then. It is one of the best opening scenes in any medium. Period.
Kill la Kill is a masterpiece to me. I truly love it. Lady Satsuki is my favorite character. Have you ever considered doing a video on her, Digibro?
This breakdown for the longest time was mine favorite video of yours. Seeing it remastered make be squeal with joy.
This Anime brings a whole new meaning to the saying “Show don’t Tell”
Gamagori's falling t-pose gives me life
This scene has been by far my favorite scene of all time, I never understood the camera work and the other things you described, but I did understand the set up of setting and character introduction being stunning
Holy crap this was sooo well done and sooo well analyzed!! You have such an amazing vocabulary and word choice!! Your work is absolutely amazing!!
good to see one of my favorite videos remastered. Believe or not this video got really into cinema, since i never really noticed how much a single frame can represent an idea or feeling.
6:26 beautiful censorship
Yeah the directing and shot composition in Kill la Kill is among the best. I just re-watched the show after having watched it as it aired 7 years ago and my GOD it's still one of the most visually inventive stunning shows even after all this time.
Imaishi really did an awesome job, it isn't often when a show is consistently dynamic, highly entertaining, and inventive from just a visual standpoint, ESPECIALLY for a 2-cour show. Even the episodes with less sakuga moments were storyboarded so well that they keep the momentum running high throughout the episodes.
Beautifully put as always, Digi
I've seen the original, but it's one of my favorite videos by you, so I'm definitely happy to see it again with more polish. Reminds me that I should probably rewatch Kill la Kill.
this is a really good video
glad you re-uploaded
I love this video so much! I hope you do more animation breakdowns in the future as you seem to be incredibly skilled at that and tbh it's my favorite content to watch ever ^^
I just want to thank you for making the time to creating this. I use this as another example of storytelling in my storyboard class and the students are always surprised and love it. Great job.
Wonderful!
Good guy Davoo, love these Kill La Kill video's man, phenomenal anime! 10/10.
Great video. Gonna rewatch Kill La Kill now
Good shit davoo, some of your best editing imo
I like how gamagori whip twists and turns to show how far he has thrown the student.
great scene breakdown. I would not mind seeing more of these (for Kill la Kill or any other worthy shows) in the future
I love that someone took the time to analyze and show off one of the best parts of this awesome anime
THIS is what a remaster should look like, the editting, the quality on the video and all the tiny details you added, awesome video, kinda of a shame I got almost a year late.
God I love this series, and this is a good break down. I was waiting for you to get to Satsuki's introduction though, as she is one of my all time favorite anime characters. The way she is lit and framed really does make her command the screen most of the time, even when she isn't fully in control. Something I love about her light is most generally it's used to display a white light or a pure one, while Ragyo's light is rainbowed or fractured, signifying the difference in their characters immediately.
NICELY DONE DAVOO!
OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS BREAKDOWN. SO GOOD
7:44 Nice. That's a comic book/manga technique, where you play with the time it takes to jump from one frame to the next. You don't see it but your mind implies and fills in the action regardless, except in animation you get the benefit of sound to push the grab home. Subscribed.
god i love this show. this was a really good breakdown, that first scene of gamagoori is truly a masterpiece, the over the top action scenes and bombastic characters in klk get me hype every time
I loved Kill La Kill as soon as I saw the first episode. I was never bored for long and was always looking forward to the next episode.
i love ths video, ive found it rather rare to find someone who actually knows what they're talking about when it comes to these kinds of things.
Glad to see you still making KLK related content after 4 years.
this anime is my favorite anime of all time, and this scene is truly a masterpiece. ive never seen an opening scene of ANY media that drew me in and captivated me the way that this scene did. thank u for doing this video on it
A very fascinating take on the opening scene of ‘Kill La Kill’.
This makes me genuinely rethink about proper setup and structuring of a scene. Particularly in regards to animation, obviously.
I’ll take this into account when I’m working on screenwriting.
Kill la kill is also one of my favorite anime! And you constantly prove it for me ^^
I love your scene analysis
This is literally my favorite video on the internet
K-on a loving thesis is one of my favorite videos from you, I'd love to see it back here again. idk exactly how all the copyrights work, but if you can, I'd be happy to watch it again.
JamPacked it's on after dark, if you're talking about the ultimate adaptation one, he got that one back too
not the ultimate adaptation one, he has a video linking to the loving thesis videos on this channel.
this made me start watching kill la kill again. lol, seems to happen a lot when i watch some of your vids mate.
Mako is best girl
You fool, you utter bafoon. All girls in this show are Best Girl.
I got a print of her In her fight uniform at comic con
Also to add;
When the student punches Gamagōri, it also emphasizes his three-star uniform versus the student’s one-star, as seen by the glowing stars.
To me, Kill la Kill is like a Van Gogh. Van Gogh's work is not a 1 to 1 replica of what he was looking at, but that's the point. A photograph of a night sky is accurate, but in Starry Night you can feel the wind blow, the trees shake, the stars twinkle, the houses slumber, and the moon slice through the sky. With the story Kill la Kill tells making everything smooth for realism would make it serious and dramatic, and that would make some of the suspension of disbelief moments harder to hold.
Artists are nutting to the detail this dude is putting into this video.....including him
This is a brilliant video essay.
As someone who's never seen kil-a-kill, simply because the art style looked funny and the story didn't jump out at me, where as others did, this review has bumped it up the list of watching this weekend.
Why did the art looking funny stop you?
I love these breakdowns
6:45 1st time I saw Gamagori's free fall I lost it. It's such a simple visual gag but it hit all the right points
Holy shit thanks for the re-edit of this video, it's pure gold now. I always tried to defend KLK animation techniques, they deserve much more love in my opinion.
EDIT: Oh and I forgot to mention these opening scenes are the BEST 4 minutes of Anime I've _ever_ seen, I just keep rewatching them over and over, simply too good.
a video about FLCL would be cool
SuperBlueboy2010 he mentioned that he hasn't seen it in a while so that's probably why
Orbit well it's only 6 episodes
SuperBlueboy2010
He wrote an in-depth analysis about it in his blog
Digibro is the type of nigga to justify his love for anything, convince you, and make you a fan of it without you even watching the damn thing.
Well, glad this is still around
I use a lot of these same techniques doing sound design for Injustice and Mortal Kombat.
I always wondered how this show managed to make everything feel so intuitively grand and all-encompassing. This explains it very well.
6:05 when your done dealing with someone’s bs
Tension, storytelling, lights, shadows, stature. I know nothing of film making, but this is a nice breakdown on probably the most chaotic introduction to any anime.
I just love this video for some reason
Love this video
very well broken down man
I learned so much from this one video
ive rewatched this vid sooo many times, so good! i feel like if more anime viewers watched this, there would be much higher standards for how many things look
Welp now I gotta rewatch it again to actually appreciate
I rate this video The Davoo/10
Although at first I didn't like Kill La Kill. But it did started getting interesting and funny as the episodes go on and I kinda liked it
Keep it up dude!!
This is amazing! :)
This is why I looooove 2D animation!
Cinematography is such a beautiful science.
Time to rewatch kill la kill
Great video! Just one small thing: a pan is a lateral movement. When a camera "pans towards" something, thats called a dolly shot.
This clip made me want to rewatch Kill La Kill.
The first and only series that got me legit *hooked* in one fraking minute xD
Even with such an extreme opening, the series does NOT let up. I love Kill la Kill so much lol
