What every horseman should strive for. Can easily say that most horsemen in the US cannot even come close to riding like this, or training a horse to this level. In fact, many riders would have no clue what they are looking at when viewing this video....a true equestrain work of art. This lightness, agility and union of horse and rider are not seen in modern Dressage.

I am in tears watching this!!! I was a working student for over two years with two of his students, and to see this... I have no words!!!!!! One has to study the ART of Equitation (or classical dressage how most call it) to really appreciate this... the dressage as we see today in the show ring has abslolutelly NOTHING to do with how horses should and want to be ridden!!!!!!! Most competitive dressage is all about the EGO, not the rider!!!! Thank you for posting this...

Je ne pense plus en la regardant à la perfection technique du génial Ecuyer, je me laisse charmer par l'harmonie,l'énergie contrôlée, l'entente parfaite entre homme et cheval et peut-être plus que tout par le rythme qui, comme l'a écrit si bien Maxime Le Forestier parvient à nous plonger dans une hypnose, à nous emporter dans une sorte d'extase.C'est justement à mon sens l' objet de l'Art tout court. Considering the very small space he is working this horse in and the level of collection I actually thought it looked less rigid than most dressage performances we see today where they have a vice like hold on the horse even though light hands are supposed to be vital. His contact with the mouth is far more relaxed. Its also noteworthy that a tremendous amount of impulsion was required for this and yet his legs aren't constantly nagging at the horse
Excellent rider. None of the flapping of the legs you see much in modern dressage riders, even the ones winning medals. Nuno was definitely one of the best riders of all time. I enjoyed watching this.
@@MsSwingin LOL. I am a dressage rider. And yes I routinely ride German Warm bloods like Hanoverians which are over 17.2 hands and huge movers. And yes they are hard to sit but does NOT mean you have to flap your legs. Watch Carl Hester of UK. Your legs are supposed to be slapped on to the side of the saddle like a slab of raw meat, as the old Cavalry Instructors used to say, and stay quiet. The reason why so many of these riders flap around is because their core is weak and they are trying to compensate for it and it carries through their legs flapping around. All that kinetic energy has to go somewhere as my old Instructor used to say. And by the way, Nuno DID ride huge European warm bloods as well. He rode many different types of Dressage horses, not just Iberian horses like Andalusian or Lusitanos.
@@Kornily-Garf.Greetings. The video is blurry but I’d guess he’s riding an Andalusian by the size of it and its head. Nuno was a great rider. The thing I like about him is he is so relaxed and yet has a total control while allowing his horse the freedom to move without artificial restrictions.
This horse name its Beu Gest, the only that Oliveira had in the Levade, teatched by him self and Mestre Fernando Oliveira is student and later, a helpfull friend. The arena ´was at Povoa de Sto.Adrião, near Lisbon, and just as a note, the young man stand with the horse in front of Oliveira, use to be the manager of the stables, and the weding good father of my grest and dear friend,Mestre Fernando Oliveira that actualy live in Algarve, south of Portugal. (I´m sorry for my poor Inglish)

Thank you for posting this, Leilani. Mr. Oliveira is so inspirational, which is why I also found Art2Ride a couple of years ago for training my horse in a compassionate and classical way. I also liked your comment on one of the clinic videos found at Rusted Mare Farm, which I replied agreeing completely with you. Yes, Art2Ride provides a wonderful training philosophy that I have been using for about 2 yrs. now with my horse.
A wonderful glimpse into a master's training session! I love how he uses so many different collection techniques to activate the horse's hindquarters, which produced the beautiful, lively and animated piaffe at 7:50.

To call it 'just free on UA-cam' is a bit of a travesty. An ideal selection for this piece of film, and it adds much to the experience of viewing it.. Well done, you!
He does not "ask the horse to bend" any more than is necessary, and you are used to watching German style (read: FEI shows and modern dressage 'culture') vs. Romanic style (of Nuno O., Racinet, Baucher, etc.) dressage. Adherents of the Romanic school - including M. Oliveira during his lifetime - are far less interested in irrelevant competitions than perfecting the art and crafting incredible horses - they get less airplay. Over-bending prevents the horse from moving straight and true ...
And the canter backwards. People don't even think that's possible. But look how it frees the shoulder and teaches the horse to control it's mass separately from it's momentum.
so beautifully and correctly put, I am grateful to know there are people who truly appreciate classical dressage and its principles. I reccomend everyone who wants to educate him/herself to read "Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage" by Philippe Karl.
Maria, This IS classical dressage and what, in my opinion, we should all strive for. The horse is relaxed and free to move and is holding itself in frame willing and happily because it is being asked to, not forced to. If you trainer does not know who Oliveria is, I fear you might be better served finding a different trainer.
This footage is priceless. L'Maitre became even more economical and still as he aged. I think he'd criticize himself for DOING too much in this excerpt. Lovely to see the counterbend in canter and how he uses it to elevate and free the piaffer and passage.
I observed horses body language when approached to be mounted. Did not look calm or relaxed. He’s obedient and compliant but does the horse enjoy any of this? Shouldn’t that matter?
@mariafzankl, I dont think there's anything wrong with aspiring to this at all. The horse was working at all times in a balanced manner, attentive to his rider. The rider is in turn staying consistent, and look how quiet his cueing is- there's no big overcue to get a small change.. To me, this is far more pleasing than modern dressage which tends to be bridle bridle overbend leg leg leg yank kick spur. There are few dressage riders who ride even close to this quietly.

You are probably referring to the counter shoulder in in canter, which you don't recognize as a classical dressage movement because it is not ridden by most riders. It is said to be very benefical if done right.
Great film.....though I am wondering if this kinda work is achievable in the average outdoor arena without the distractions that four walls and a roof provide, and in what seems to me to be quite a small area.....and how about without a bit in the mouth?? Anyway I am giving it a go with slow but positive progress, using the techniques of Philip Karl BUT NOT using a bit like he does. I am using the Dr Cook Bitless bridle with surprising success, even if we are still in the early stages!!
yes... it is... and it is quite possible bitless too, usually you see people achieve this kind of thing with a bosal, but the curb is preferred by many horses of this level. and if you can ride like this, it does not matter if it is an open field, a bullfighting arena, a parade or a show with lights and fireworks.. if you ride horses like this you understand how you cannot bully them... and how his words and his art are true... how he did not change his ways.. how this was just flamboyent youth and he did not need to prove anything and just could show the calm work... in order to ride the calm you need to understand the ambitious
the horse is really tense this is not natural horsemanship to me!!! I looked him up as there is a quote in the heather moffett book to watch him! you can see his spur really pinching the horse!

first i thought the same that this is influence by bullriding arena, but i read his books and i changed my opinion completely and got an deep understanding, i am from Germany and read his book "Notizen zum Unterricht" and for me its a bible ! a must read full of beautiful wisdom for every qualified dressage rider, a book you get tears in your eyes and i get a lot of profit by it although he is dead - if he would be alive i would start to visit him.....thank you Mr. Oliveira and R.I.P.
This looks totaly rigid to me. The back dosen't move. So of course it's easier(much) to manuever in such a small space. As they need to in bullfighting. I would not confuse this with what we are trying to achieve in Dressage...........
