Ah my favorite drummer to see if quintuplets work on new equipment
The best review of the SPD SX PRO I have seen. Incredibly informative on its capabilities. Thanks. Subscribed!
1st time here. Love your enthusiasm 😀 I'm just a finger drummer on an MPC but have been considering a sampling pad. Your fantastically thorough run through has got me thinking I need to investigate more...
Just got mine in this morning. I haven’t even opened it yet. Your video sealed the sale for me. Thanks 👍🏻
It’s time to run Doom on SPD SX Pro
Thank you so much for this. I just discovered a couple of cool features thanks to you. Best review video of the product I've seen so far.
Best review by far.
Bought one as soon as it hit sweetwater, and I've been waiting for reviews from people besides the "access journalists" of the industry.
But from my favorite UA-camr-drummer? *Chef's kiss*.
As this is a sponsored video I would be tempted to call this an access journalist video as well.
@@DrBackBeat Being given access for being an expert in the subject and being given access for being an expert in being an access journalist are very different dynamics from which I expect very different outcomes.
@@777Looper Fair point, I may have gotten wrong what you meant by an 'access journalist'. Despite that, this is a sponsored video, and if the free product and/or sponsorship wouldn't color the opinion, the likely contractual obligations/restrictions definitely would.
Beautiful review of this beast of an unit.
Thank you Shawn!
Buy the SPD-SX PRO here: imp.i114863.net/Xx74Wb Also, ignore the spambots. There are NO giveaways (unfortunately) so don’t give your info or $ to the fake profiles impersonating me.
Great review. You helped me a lot in my decision to upgrade... I really appreciate the pad preview/player feature you show at 20:14. The only wish that remains would be the ability to preview not only individual pad sounds, but also sounds of linked pads.
Can it run crysis
It’s time for an update for my original SPD-X from about 10 years ago. Great review!
I'm just a guitarist who likes to play around with midi triggers on my pedalboard but I watched the whole video, very interesting and so nicely made!
just the best video about this on internet!
Great video. Been using the SPD-SX for 10 years or so and love it, but this new one is icyyyy. Love the addition of 8 outputs via usb and 8 trigger inputs. I could see a lot of drummers using this to run 8 channels of tracks via Ableton while simultaneously running 0 latency samples onboard the actual pad. That's what I always wanted to do but the original SPD-SX was way to limited with outputs.
those 2 knobs for volume/pitch/transient are coming from the TM-6 pro - love that module.
that quick access saves you so much time
Awesome, hopefully this means second-hand SPD-SX's will get even cheaper! Only way I'm gonna be able to get hold of one
Just ordered one thanks in part to this video. I’ll be using it at home, jam sessions I go to and concerts with some of members of the jam session group.
Thanks for the video! i got a lot of information i need. And just after you said your band is Sungazer, i 've remember i saw you in the video about polyrhytms :) I like your songs ❤
Much love from Sweetwater Tech Support!
The video I’ve always wanted to see, thank you!
Man, I needed this insight! I purchased the SPD SX Pro. I'm a guitarist and not..... not a drummer, but I need the drummers that I used to cue loops, sound effects, click tracks, etc. I never owned the SPD SX prior. this is so helpful, and Imma fan of SunGlazer too
Such a good review, very useful, thanks 🙌
I just picked up the SPD-SX Pro a couple of weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. I had to sell my acoustic kit a few years back, and since then just haven't had room for one. The flexibility, connection, and programming options make this perfect to satisfy that itch to play without turning my house into an obstacle course. In addition to its obvious value to performing drummers as an accessory, I can attest that it makes a great kit stand-in for when you just gotta play.
Nice, I've been looking at this to scratch that same itch. I'm in the same boat, used to have a big acoustic kit, had to sell it, my soul cries out for it. Looked into Roland and Efnote e-kits, thought "These look great, but I don't know if I have room for this." But I think I could take this, over time add a kick pad, double bass pedal and hihat pad/stand and snare pad and be set.
@@everthealtruist I got a bass kick pedal for it, which works great. I'm going to get a nice hi-hat stand and either some metal discs or maybe one of the Roland MIDI cymbals, too.
This looks amazing 🤩
Thanks for this. It was very helpful.
I've had one since released, and it's a beast.
Great video and comparison. Thank you very much!!
Amazing review, Shawn!
I've still got my OG SPD-s from 15 years ago. Might be time to upgrade.
You did so well on this. SO. WELL.
A very good review :)
The best explanation eva!
Best review yet.
That is a fab review!
I’m looking forward to getting this …
I hope Roland has an update to the HandSonic HPD-20 in the works. The HPD-20 is outdated/long in the tooth, and really deserves an update. I’m holding off on purchasing one until there is an HPD-30/HandSonic Pro. Color screen, sampling, and similar interface improvements to match the level of the SPD-SX Pro.
I hope you read this, Roland.
Good work ❤
Great video! Thank you. I will be upgrading soon. Can you tell me what you use to have your SPD SX Pro right above your snare?
that's one hell of a machine
oh no, no you made me want to spend 1000 bucks on this and i'm not gonna do that...
anyway mine is coming this week
ps: just kidding i'm ok with spdsx cuz i'm kid who has no money so...
great video ! thanks alot
Thanks for tbe i credible insites on this available tech...being a piano player/ drummer...too much fun...🥁🎹
Great video! Thank you! I agree about the lack of four FX buttons. ROLAND DO SOMETHING!
Cool video thank you from germany 🙋🏼♂️🙂
This is an outstanding review. I’ve yet to find anyone addressing the USB send and receive audio/MIDI feature and the correct settings to get it to work with Logic, aside from the required driver that’s downloaded from the ROLAND website.
By the way… it’s actually 28 gigs is what mine reads out of the box. Not 32. 4 gigs is used by the factory operating system is what I’m seeing.
The Sync with tempo of every loop you can put in this thing is a huge improvement, i already have an amazing tm6 pro module with trigger its fine to beef up my acoustic kit or make it silent in reahearsal purpose but this thing can only play pre recorded playback or one hit shot, with this pad i could be in control of my synth or acoustic loop sample , since i play sequenced keyboard stuf and drum this is perfect add for me.
You mean a future improvement for Sync Tempo? as today there's no way to Sync Tempo with current firmware
I'm just happy this new product will hopefully lower the SPDSX cost, this new product was obviously designed for people who work big stages, or in depth electronica, which is cool. It would be fun if the original line keep getting produces for people who don't.
Hi Shawn,
Have you tried your hands on using multiple balanced outs (apart from the master out)? Would like to know how one goes about routing them...
Great Video. I'm a new user. This SPD Is Off The Chain.
Hey shawn.. great video. Thanks. I'm an amateur player. I wanna buy a drumpad, do you recommend Spx pro or octapad 30?
In 2004 I bought an spd-s (no x) named it Harvey and somehow got mono samples from big pro tools session onto a 512mb as card.
I bought 3 as we toured a lot. Roland gave me Harvey Jr (add x) when it came out around 2013. It was like a new world. Now this … Harvey Jr Jr.. is pro. He’s sitting in a box ready to play. I’m scared. I live sampled orchestras and beats and stuff from our albums and triggered it with my left hand while playing. I’d pop it with my finger stick in hand. 512mb! through 2012. I always had it left of high hat. I have v drums and kicks I could hook up but never do. The coolest thing was I never used a laptop on stage. Good stuff Crowder! Sup Fort Wayne Tiberius I’m gonna call. I promise! I’m very tired. Apologies all as this is likely nonsense to all but a very good old band. Go Harvey Jr Jr (pro)!
Multi layered samples would have been amazing
Great video. The new version is a bit like what the old version should have been.
hey shawn, please post a clip of you just solo improv. jamming with your spd-sx pro and your live kit. I'd love to see what you come up with.
Hey Shawn, thanks for this amazing video. I have a specific question though:
Do you know if you can send midi notes during a song? Meaning: I want the SPD to switch the scenes of my Quad Cortex live during a certain song through a midi cable. (So i don't have to do this by foot - so i can focus on singing and playing). In other words: can the SPD automatically send midi notes to the midi output after starting a track?
I know i could do this though Ableton but I prefer NOT to have a computer on stage...
Thanks in advance.
Vinny
Hey Shawn! Any chance you'd do a drum mic setup breakdown?
Wow you are very knowledgeable and a great drummer! I just started following you and your band on Instagram…I’m think about getting this but can you hook up a pedal to create loops of a sample?
Shawn, what do you think about it half a year later? How does the pad live up?
Curious how to route kd7 with the SPD SX Pro? I also have fd8 snare pedal and a PD 128 snare to connect. Great video. Thank you bro. 💙🙏🏼
Alternate trigger mode? Play a sequence of pad samples.
I've been putting off buying one of these for awhile now. Do you use a keyboard amp or something like that when you're practicing on your acoustic kit as well? Or do you use in-ears?
Hi Shawn - In regards to the triggers for acoustic drums, is there a way to select and edit the trigger inputs direct on the spd-sx pro? I can do it with the software, but unless I'm missing something in the manual I cannot see how to select the trigger inputs on the pad itself other than hitting the drum that the particular trigger may be connected/mounted to.
There's some rare instances where I have the pad powered up, but I don't have a computer connection or the triggers hooked up - but I'd like to get the pad configured.
Other than that, I love the Pro.
Hello mate, how can we change EQ on a pad on SPD SX? via effects only? Thanks
Great Vid! Can you assign pads to different outputs and prevent those pads from going to FOH?
Yes
Surprised they didn’t add usb c like they did to the sp 404 mkii
You can't change Tempo of the Loops.... it's Basic Features!!!
Not available in spd sx pro !
Its very bad.
Great Video Shawn,
Ist posible to Play djent with Dynamic und articulation in SPD SX PRO without Ableton?
I warm greeting
Hi! thanks for that great video! I have the new Roland now. The MFX are Kit FX's - right? so I gave everything to find a standard FX send Controller to give every Single Pad a certain amount of the MFX. but that's not there... Am I right here? if there is no FX send, that would be not that good.
@ShawnCrowder and chat, how would I record the master out L and R to an audio interface like an Apollo twin? Two balanced cables then link them as a stereo pair? That’s what I’ve been doing but just wanted to make sure I’m doing it right. Just got one and it’s amazing 🤓
I didn't want to be impressed by this but I am. My Spd-x JUST stopped working for no reason smh. I definitely don't need to be spending the cash on this right now but......... Yeaaaa. This is phenomenal.
Hi
2 questions.
1. To copy pads sounds from the spx sx to pro do you go (OUT a montitor to Audio IN on the pro)?
2. Do the pad sounds copy in reverse pads also?
Can you set up a count off for a loop track?
You did a good job with the video. So from what I can see is it does not allow me to (1). Sample to the internal system, (2) No Looper, (3). No Hard Drive Bay to install your own SSD. Other than that this thing is still a game changer. Please correct me if I am wrong about any of what I said here.
Do you have any sources I can learn from in regards to crating tracking loops
Is there a way to reverse the signal send for the Hi-Hat so that UP is open and DOWN is closed as with the real instrument?
Thanks for that video. Noob to the pad world and got one of these a couple of months ago. This was one of the best SPD-SX PRO videos I have seen so far.
I bought the FT 9 hi hat pedal. Love this pad but I can't figure out how to make that pedal feel good. I played with some of the on board settings, but I really don't have a clue what I am doing yet with this thing. When I rock my foot heel toe, I get a trigger and its closed closed hat instead of open closed. Maybe its me and my technique, sometimes I can move my foot around and adapt to some weird motion with my foot but the hats have just never felt right. Also is there a way splash the hats with my foot to get a crash like with traditional hats?
You should sell a SPD X class. I'd buy it.
Go into system settings, and pad settings, hit hat button along the bottom. Make sure mode is HH-ctrl, i have mine set to 40 on the open close, and the cc max 127. Probably never going to feel "real" but hope this help. Oh, and you need 2 KT-10's in your life, there expensive, but brilliant.
@@Chmied I have one KT-10 and feels great. I kind of wish the FT-9 felt more like the KT-10.
Thanks for the tip. Big improvement playing with those settings. I still wish I could splash the hats with the pedal and you need to be really accurate playing open hats but still having fun.
Hi Shawn! I'm having trouble trying to change the pitches on the timpani patches.. Can you help?
ok ok ok now I got to get it! Let's write a letter to Santa 🎅
This is the best review ever!!!nThank you 🥲
I used the SPD SX for years and the main problem I have encountered is that sometimes the click track and the sequence that are linked desynchronize. this happens more and more often with time...
So if you’re running backing tracks off of this thing, can you use the midi outs to run patch changes on the guitar players’ digital units (like a helix or quad cortex) and/or a light show through a dmx controller?
Hello Shawn. Thanks for your information. Can you please assist me in restoring my SPS SX PRO to its factory settings? Thanks in advance!!!
"...Not having to whack it to trigger a loop." That is called velocity control. Alternate Mode who produces the TrapKat has been offering great velocity control since the 90's. It's about time facking Roland caught up. 😆
Not real tech savvy here, you can plug in any Roland HH and Kick?
Can you show me how to get to the screen shown at 20:13 ? Where I can rewind or full forward a backing track? I can't seem to find it
Hello. I have a Important and frustrating question I hope you can help me.
The 'Roland pad spd sx pro'
I would like that 'from the output' only the click sounds in my headphones. but in a way everything comes out and I just want the click in my headphones not all the sounds.
How do i do it? What do I have to do for it to work?
thank you so much
For all that drumars using spd is sync tempo. but no sync tempo in this new one it's very bad to take that important operation.
Hi Shawn and thanks a lot for your REALLY helpful tutorials about the new SPD SX Pro!!! I used the older SPD SX for more than 7 years and thought about to upgrade this wonderful tool in my set up which I used a lot in band context but also and specially for my drum solo concept. The new SPD SX Pro is fantastic and offers me on the one hand a lot of new features which I enjoy very much! B U T--- There is one fundamental feature I can't find ???? I can't believe that Roland didn't thought about it !!!!!! When I have 9 loops and install them on the 9 pads of the old SPD SX it was no prob to switch from 1 to 9, then to 6, back to 1 and so on. Every time I hit a new pad the one I used before stopped playing. You could simply adjust that with the 'Mutegroup 1' option. With the new SPD SX Pro this doesn't work as a general setting. You can adjust that pad 1 should stop playing when I hit pad 2, but if you go back to 1 again pad 2 still continue playing. You can not switch in an improvisational way with all 9 pads. I can't believe that Roland didn't thought about that !!!!! OR I didn't find the clue for that..... Can you help me out with that ????????? Or someone else??? I#m looking forward to your feedback! Thanks a lot and regards from Germany. Andi

Thanks a lot for this video ! Anyone knows how to get the window pad preview/player ? For navigating though the sample! Thanks a lot :)
hold down the shift button and press pad check button
I never figured out how to use the short loop button
Why wouldn’t they add a Looping function like the Alesis Strike Multi pad, kind of a deal breaker for me
Como endereçar reverb somente para o microfone conectado na entrada ?
Can i use a kd 10 kick pad to trigger the kick module.
Looks like they took a lot from the Alesis Strike Multipad to be honest.
Agree, but it appears they have done it better. I need to demo it
Sync tracks to click , glad it works for you but you never showed where this function is frustrating..
How to increase tempo in roland SPD-SX PRO sampling pad?
The guys basically reinvented a bit the Alesis Strike Multipad.
hi how to import existing kit to roland spd sx pro through usb please help
