I don't understand why people think everything always has to be fresh and different. The original FF7 has a timeless quality. When LOTRs movies came out everyone already knew the story. That didn't prevent it from being one of the best movies all time. I hope they stick a little closer to the original on the next one.

One of the most reasonable, reasoned, multi-dimensional and well rounded reviews of this game I've seen on UA-cam.
I'm replaying the game currently for the first time since 2020, and it's so much better than what I remember. The Hard mode difficulty being a real ass kicker is also a very welcome surprise. You really have to think strategically about your weapon choice and Materia load-out before even going into boss battles, and even during, you have to be so attuned to all the little details in the way battles shift. It's really visceral and thrilling and makes the combat even more enjoyable.
I think a lot of people's expectations got in the way of them enjoying the game as is when it came out, but now, almost 3 years later, with the game basically being an older game at this point, I think one can go in and just enjoy Remake for the game it is.
And I don't agree that a game has to be revolutionary for it to be a 10/10 game. All it has to be is a very well made and with a lot of care paid to the details; knows what it is and what it's doing; and attempt to maximize all of its individual components. Although I don't think FFVII: Remake is a 10/10 game, it is a very enjoyable one that warrants it being played again and again on its own strengths alone. That to me is more than enough.

As a person who "Jumped Ship" at the ending, I can say that I do still love the game.
Each scene that was enhanced/changed felt engaging.
My main gripe is a little weird.
The Whispers feel like a personification of the fans that want a "True Remake" without changing the plot in any way.
The Whispers to me are us *the fans* who want Pres Shinra to be dead when we walk in or that Jesse, Biggs, and Wedge don't survive.
I also agree with Death, that because the Whispers are an agent of fate, that the events that should feel monumental are cheapened.
The Plate falling looses it's gravity when we save alot of people, same with Jesse, Biggs, and Wedge.
I do love this game, but the feels so disconnected that I am now replaying through the original.
    Kinda like brain bleach :P

    • @enkidude
      @enkidude 4 роки тому +16

That's what the whispers are... Squeenix is metagaming the fans, ultimately to have two separate timelines and a bizarre plot contrivance to tie them together to appease their insane action anime obsession, and the source material, and it doesn't make sense to do both, and the glue tying it together kills the momentum of both timelines.

    • @andrewdias2690
      @andrewdias2690 4 роки тому +7

I agree with everything you say here. Death 100% disagrees with us though. He said in one of his Twitch streams that we're "stupid" for interpreting the whispers as an allegory of the OG fans who wanted the story to remain faithful to the original. It can be argued that they didn't think about it as much as we think they did. In an interview, it was kind of implied that the addition of the whispers was just a random idea that Kitase, Nojima, and Nomura just kind of went with. At any rate, I don't know how this couldn't have crossed the minds of a single person on the development team. Even if you don't take the interpretation that we've understood, Square had to know that they would alienate a ton of OG fans by screaming at the players that they were no longer remaking the story from FFVII. A sequel just hits differently when you were expecting a remake. At any rate, since Kitase has tried to reassure people that they weren't going to drastically change the story (don't know how that's possible, but sure), I'll try to give them some benefit of the doubt. I'll wait until the second installment gets played. If it's not crazy off the rails story-wise, I'll give it a shot. But I'd rather play the original if they're going to make this a remake, as it seems. At least until I'm comfortable with playing the next sequel in the FFVII compilation...

    • @lovesgibson
      @lovesgibson 4 роки тому +8

Would you really have as much fun playing the exact same game without any surprises? I guess the point was that this game isn’t actually a “remake”, but it is the attempt of Sephiroth to remake his destiny; therefore, essentially being a sequel to the original FF7.
Kind of brilliant, but I can also see how people who were wanting a straight up remake would be disappointed

    • @AfuckingBfuckingW
      @AfuckingBfuckingW 4 роки тому +19

@@andrewdias2690 I dunno man, you're literally taking an idea they had to keep OG fans speculating with how they would handle certain scenes as a personal attack.
They are going to keep the majority of FF7 intact, but fate is dead and now the characters are no longer bound to expectations, the main plot points will be hit but now even long time fans who know the game inside and out will no longer know exactly how things will play out.
The whispers are their excuse to play with the plot, in *hopefully* not a terrible way. It's not there to tell you, a person who clearly expected a remake to shut up and stop being a whiny fan, it's there to give you uncertainty. To question how they will handle things going forward, but you take it personally?
It's a strange argument to be made, truly.
This game is a subversion of our expectations, it's both a remake, and a *remake* . as-in, an actual remake of the continuity, they managed to make both a remake, and a sequel of sorts, in my opinion this is a brilliant way of retelling a 20yr old game. Every single fan, new and old, are left wondering wtf is going to happen. I love it honestly lol

    • @andrewdias2690
      @andrewdias2690 4 роки тому +9

@@AfuckingBfuckingW The issue of subversion for its own sake is certainly a topic of conversation that can be had. But the arguments are not necessarily from the standpoint of determining whether the game is a successful piece of art. I guarantee you that if this was advertised as a spin-off, there would be nowhere near the opposition from certain segments of the fan base.
From my own perspective, it does feel like a slap in the face. To be clear, I actually really enjoyed this game, but that was in spite of the ending. The ending was, as you've alluded to, a heavy-handed way of saying, "okay, we did your remake. Now the gloves are off." After finishing the game, there is every indication that, regardless of how you literally interpret the whispers, their defeat means that the original story that they were "guarding" is now dead - to wit, this will no longer be FFVII even if the character models are the same.
The times when narrative subversion is clever are when there are expectations relating to the unknown. Think The Sixth Sense, The Others, or Metal Gear. I wouldn't classify this as "clever subversion." This was something else. Square relied on the hype and marketing force of those who had been calling for this remake for years. Then the primary plot device of the game was to be able to break out of the prescribed story that just about everyone was asking for. It's a bit of a dick move, really. And it does nothing but alienate a decent chunk of OG fans on the off chance that a number of new players will get off on the schadenfreude of watching those OG fans be disappointed. They knew what people were looking for and they had to have known that a sequel/parallel universe story was NOT what people had been hounding them about for a decade.
As I said above, Nomura's shit-stirring comments aside, I'm going to try to cling to Kitase's assertion that the story will not change too much, which I think can possibly be done if there is some erasure of what happened at the end of this game. I would argue that there would be just as much hype and theory /speculation if they hadn't chosen to toss in the ridiculous and clumsy whisper plot device. Heck, there were theory videos for years leading up to this game when people thought it was an actual remake. At any rate, we'll see what happens.

This is one of the most spot on reviews i have seen. If they removed the whispers it probably would have been my GOTY. Although i do feel the endgame was poorly implemented.
For the final boss i think they could have moved the Jenova fight. Something like Motor Ball > Sephiroth > Jenova. Maybe give Jenova an extra form.
Other than that i do feel in some place the environments lack a bit of character compared to the original. Its all a bit too normal looking and Cloud tends to look out of place with his anime hair and giant sword next to all these very normal looking NPC's.

Also, whispers: attacking wedge in sector 7 revealed the underground lab. Jessie gets attacked in chapter 4 to force cloud to join the mission, ensuring him & aerith meet and stop Reno from picking up aerith at the church.
They are the defense of the planet to ensure the events of OG ff7 play out, as it wants the events to unfold. We defeat them however, and this opens up the possibility of new conclusions to various storylines.
These are highly alluded to with a different Stamp, Zack & Biggs being alive, "the unknown journey continues", and for me personally, Aerith's statement that the other side of Destiny's crossroads is "boundless, terrifying freedom"

You could have the same plot changes... hear me out, without the stupid plot whispers. They are just constant fourth wall breakers, anything about fate breaks the fourth wall cause it's insanely cheap and hacky, and they are arbitrarily "keeping" the original events in place, two huge fourth wall breaking conventions for the sake of shoe horning in changes.
...just make the changes without the whispers. There aren't whispers in battle saying whao this is different or whispers every time someones voice actors audio tries to come through to muffle it, or during anything else that wasn't in the original, there's no point, it's extremely contrived to add these layers on top of everything else going on just to constantly take you out of the moment, it's like a bunch of directors walking around a set going "no no no no, then you do this, and you do it like this" and instead of cutting out the footage they used it. FINALLY!
I was waiting for your review, Death!
In my opinion, you're THE guy when it comes to FFVII.
Talking about game play, it's just awesome and I totally agree with the aerial combat.
I got a lot of mixed feelings , talking about the story, though I really liked the small changes they did, and the pay off was just amazing.
And, YES... The Whispers of Fate are super incosistent. The way they killed Wedge was terrible, I think if Wedge died with his cats during the plate fall would be much more meaningful.
I couldn't agree more about the negative points. I'm just a bit worried about the future of the story and all these crazy theories. I really hope they don't screw up with the critical moments of the story.
I gotta say I didn't like this "dying but not dying" thing with the characters, maybe this is connected to the Whispers, which I've already made my point. I have a lot of mixed feelings with the ending, sometimes I feel like I dig it, other times I feel like I just hated it. I agree a lot with what you say, Death, maybe they just threw a lot at the end and maybe could go a bit smoother. I really don't want to see this game's story going nuts, that's all.
I loved the soundtrack, I think they gave a cool modern look to it, but sometimes it feels a bit off, specially during the plate fall, I think silence would be much better. At certain points these eletronic beats really felt a bit cheesy and out of context.
The graphics are a bit disapointing in many ways, although in other points they're amazing. Maybe if we had a patch or something like that, it'd fix these small probs, but I don't think they're gonna do something about it.
I thought a lot about the value, I think the deluxe edition (which was the one I got) is pretty neat. However, the simple version of the game was a bit expensive for what it is, but nothing bizarre, too.
I watched some parts of your let's play and I loved it! Keep doing this amazing work, Death! Love your content!

OMG, thank you for mentioning the plate collapse music. I LOVED the soundtrack on the whole, but that weird, frantic banger while the plate fell really pulled me out of the moment. I expected something similar to the feeling of the original where it was quiet and haunting. Especially seeing the people being crushed while President Shinra looks on. The music immediately after the plate collapse would have been way more moving I think. Not much in the way of sound effects. Just quiet destruction and a pan up to the president's office as he listens to classical music.... Big missed opportunity, imo.

I was like: What the hell? Why is this song playing right now?
It's totally out of context. In this particular moment I was just expecting silence, and if there was supposed to have music it'd be only the opera at the President's office.
I really liked the soundtrack, the remixes of many songs were really cool, specially the ones during the minigames and, of course, the orchestral versions of the classic songs! Just beautiful, though there are some moments that the remixes felt a bit off, like the one Death pointed out and the one during the plate fall. There are other moments which this happens but I think the plate one was the one that really screamed for a silent moment.

Almost as if all those who wanted a straight 1:1 recreation were the arbiters of fate and the party was the creators trying to make something new. I do understand what you mean by saying it made the party seemed weak and some of the parts being unneeded but having Wedge not get out of sector 7 does allow for the hidden research facility to be found so that was fun.

I gotta be honest, I was absolutely loving the game for the vast majority of my playthrough. The characters, the visuals, the music (mostly), all fantastic. I even really enjoyed the combat which was my biggest concern going into this. Up until this game I hadn't played anything with a turn based/action hybrid system that I liked. But the way they implemented the ATB and allowed you to pause whenever to enter commands made it all fall together nicely. Not to mention the Materia system was basically wholly intact. It was firing on all cylinders and meeting or exceeding almost all of my expectations. I mean, it certainly wasn't perfect. The combat, while fun, had some hiccups. Like being stun locked by three enemies and going "Ok, I'll switch to Tifa" and as soon as you do every bad guy just immediately makes a bee line to her and starts juggling her like a hackey sack. The padding was pretty blatent at times, and certain sections really did drag. But I was beyond willing to forgive it's flaws because it had just gotten so much right. It "felt" like FF7 in a way I was worried it wouldn't. Then came the ending and I just sat there watching it, frightened and confused. Sure, the Harry Potter ghosts flying around all through the game had me a bit worried, but I figured at worst it's some new plot thread they'll try to weave into the story that will fall flat. Like they're the tortured spirits of the Ancients or some other silly shit. Never in my wildest nightmares did I think that we'd end up fighting Destiny's Kaiju with the explicit goal of retconning the events of the original. I really wish I could share the feeling of those who love this "bold new direction" or even bring myself to be hopeful and join the "well, let's wait and see what they do with it" crowd. But I've been around for a while now and I can't help noticing that this smells like it's gonna end up as a self-indulgent, convoluted, alternate universe/time travel cluster fuck. I just don't see where they can go from here that will manage to stay true to the events and themes of the original. Once you make the story about defying fate and fixing past mistakes, it can't be about loss and identity any more. The worst part is that they were so close... SO close to knocking it out of the park and for some reason decided to going flying off the rails at the last minute. I've never had a game drop from a 9/9.5 to a 4.5/5 so fast in my life. I hope I'm wrong and the rest of the installments are as satisfying as the first 16 chapters of this game, but I'm not holding my breath.

I definitely feel for you man. Felt the same way when I finished the game. I was so confused and afraid I literally talked to my friend about it due to my concerns.
It sucks you feel this way, and I think Square’s track record with the FF series doesn’t help much. You are totally right to feel what you’re feeling.
However, if I can add just a smidge of faith back into the remake for you, I think you’re reading a bit too much into the implications.
I think, yes, the whispers dying does give Square an out to not follow the story to a T, but I also think that Square is not bold enough to actually say ‘f*** you’ to all their fans, ESPECIALLY with consoles sales not doing to well in Japan, which is a high priority for Square, being a Japan-based company.
Knee jerk reaction, yeah. It feels like they’re just wanting to do what they want. But all the interviews that I’ve seen/read, you can really tell that they understand how important this game is. They repeatedly watched fan reaction videos as inspiration whenever morale was low. Kitase goes to reassure us that this is FFVII.
In a way, the developers want us to experience the story again for the first time. Because we know how it’s going to go, but they want us to feel that mystery again with how is it going to go down, or even make us question if it’ll go the way we thought and then pull the rug from our feet.
Do I think they went about it in an overly convoluted way? Hell yes. But was it effective? Yeah. Because we’re all reacting to it with pure emotions, regardless if it’s positive or negative.
TL;DR - Don’t give Square too much credit, Square is not nearly bold enough to change a classic completely. And Kitase has given us a reassurance that it will continue to be FFVII.

I just want to repeat my post in the other comment.. hope you get to read this guys :)
Nobody is looking at Jenova being the center of all this - "the source of everything". Everything in the remake will make sense one you look at this from that perspective. The remake is about what happened after Advent Children and they embedded it brilliantly without disrupting the OG main story and in the same way will put closure to it. Its a game of it's own because it's not about the OG and yet we are still getting the OG when everything is done.
      A. Harbinger is Jenova who in the future has corrupted the lifestream so much that she gained control over it. That's why Kadaj and the gang was there in the final battle because their loyalty is with their "Mother"
      .
      B. The whispers are the corrupted lifestream that Jenova is controlling while staying in the lifestream. Since the lifestream doesn't have the concept of time and space, she can used the whispers to act as her will dictates in all point of time - the past, present, and future all at the same time. And because she is in the lifestream, she continue to accumulate knowledge of the surface world at all time - that's how she guards plot changes. She want to preserve the future where she attained this outcome. When Sephiroth said to Cloud "the planet is slowly dying" it was because the lifestream is getting corrupted.
      C. Aerith can no longer sit and watch while all this is happening in the lifestream and since she doesn't have the ability to oppose Jenova, she resurfaced in her OG body to influence events to create a future without Jenova - not just defeat her but totally eliminate any traces of her as it it is the only way for the planet to truly starts healing. otherwise human ceases to exist 500 years later.
      D. Sephiroth's power came from Jenova and that is why he can also manipulate the whispers but he is also threatened with that future cause it will make his existence irrelevant, unfortunately he can't oppose Jenova directly. Sephiroth needs to be stronger than Jenova and he can do this if he too resurfaced and prevent Aerith's death. This way she won't be in the lifestream by the time the meteor hit Gaia so he can gained the power he failed to achieve in the OG. In order to do this he needs the following 2 steps to succeed:
      1. He needs Cloud to defeat Jenova in the lifestream so no one will prevent plot changes. That is why in the end of the game, he opened a portal to the lifestream to lead the party there. Sephiroth doesn't have the ability to create a rift, he and Aerith only have the ability to travel in and out of the lifestream - and so he did, open that gateway. After defeating Jenova (the so called Harbinger), he knows it wont be enough to really stop her and the future would still be them same. He still needs to continue with his next step to attain the god like existence.
      2. He needs Cloud to prevent Jenova from killing Aerith in the Forgotten City. Yes, it wasn't Sephiroth who killed Aerith, it was Jenova in a clone appearing like Sephiroth - lets call her Jenova Sephiroth. This Jenova Sephiroth has a tell - it wasn't talkative as the real Sephiroth and that she always use Jenova Part (e.g. Jenova Dreamweaver) to fight the party while the real Sephiroth likes to fight as himself. If it was the real Sephiroth who killed Aerith, then he didn't need to resurfaced all the way back to the beginning of the game - he can simply go to that point and leave Aerith alive. That is why since Chapter 2, Sephiroth was already taunting Cloud about Aerith's fate, to really strengthen Cloud's resolve of not letting anyone die especially Aerith. Sephiroth even manipulated event's so Cloud could witness first hand a friend getting stab - Barret. Oh by the way, it was Sephiroth who placed the president hanging outside and it was Jenova Sephiroth who kills the president just like in the OG.
      E. Aerith in the lifestream loves Cloud's memory of her so that is why she didn't create her own remnants - she wants to preserve how Cloud remembers her. Which is why when he when she resurfaced, she didn't tell the party of the truth and she tries to remain as how she was in the OG to preserve that relationship with Cloud so when she eventually returns back to the lifestream, she will still have that memories to treasure - that's what she meant when she was thanking Cloud in Chapter 14's resolve scene. That is also why she can only tell Red XIII about the truth because he understand the lifestream better than anyone in the party and he can craft this believable story about destiny and the arbiters of faith that even old FF7 players will believe :) Aerith is not good at lying, only hiding things. Fortunately this will be further revealed later when they meet up with Bugenhagen and the ultimate reveal is when she finally need tot ell the party that she needs to go back to the lifestream to stop the meteor which will not happen in the Forgotten City - otherwise Sephiroth would have failed earlier and just redo things again.
      F. The final battle in the game all happened inside the lifestream. Normally people who dies and enters the lifestream losses their consciousness and so when they resurfaced as a new born, they don't have memory of their past. That is why Aerith warns the party before entering the lifestream that if they proceed, they will change - because she needs to use her ability so the party will retain consciousness inside the lifestream while still alive and will be protected from its corruption. And that is why when they defeated Jenova in the lifestream, all of the corrupted part (whispers) were cleansed and made its way back in to the lifestream. At this point of the game - everything is how it was in the OG.
That is basically the entirety of the remake arc and although the conclusion of this arc will be in the later part, the next part will be of different arc taken from another compilation and I strongly believe it will be from Before Crisis or/and Crisis Core - it will be about the Turks vs Avalanche or the Wutai War or even Rufus past relationship with the Avalanche. The biggest indicators here are:
      1. Before the whispers were defeated, they were largely concentrated circling around the Shinra Building. This means Shinra is about to do something they didn't do in the OG game.
      2. Zack being introduced earlier. Zack will have a role in a flashback, maybe playable to replace the one with Sephiroth because we all know he no longer needs introduction.
Biggs didn't die in the plate same as the OG although he did die before the meteor hits Gaia but there is no real evidence he died in the plate exactly - we only assumed they all died during that time. If Biggs died in that plate in the OG, the whispers would have come after him as they did with Wedge but they didn't - because it wasn't a plot change. Biggs being shown alive this time probably means he will take a role in the next part of the game, most likely similar to Dyne (or even replaces Dyne) who will be going after Barret blaming him for what happened to Jessie and Wedge. Or he will join the Avalanche HQ who originally he doesn't like but had a change of heart just to come after Shinra because of what happened to his friends. The party will then end up in the crossfire and have to fight Jessie to know some sense in to him.

But if what you're saying is true, it was a horrible miscalculation. Because if that's the case then all the people who think the changes are great are going to be disappointed, and the rest of us are going to go "Oh, thank God. And a few years ago I would have agreed with you that no one would dare intentionally piss off long time fans of their franchise, but unfortunately I've noticed it being suddenly quite fashionable for media creators to very boldly and loudly say "go fuck yourselves" to the OG fans of established properties. "What's that? You'd like more Star Trek? Ok, we'll make some, but it isn't going to be 'your' Star Trek. It's going to be 'our' Star Trek. Sure, none of the people involved understand or give a shit about the franchise and what mate it so great in the first place, but you can rest assured that it's going to be much, much better that what you fell in love with. There's gonna be, like, 600% more sword fights and explosions. We've got big ideas, and we're gonna subvert the FUCK out of your expectations. Whenever you are doing the inevitable "Theories on the Arbiters of Fate" video, please give your opinion on this theory for future games:
Every game in the remake project will essentially jump timelines. This would explain the "alternate reality Stamp" universe where Zack is still alive. In that timeline, there is no Buster sword paradox. You'd start at a further point in the timeline without your endgame gear/levels e.g. part 2 will start at Kalm in the "alternate reality Stamp" timeline at level 7 with starting equipment. This solves the logistic issue of continuing the story when you were so powerful you just beat Sephiroth. The Cloud & co. you play as will be a different Cloud & co. in every game.
Every game could reasonably end with a Sephiroth/Fates battle because Sephiroth (and maybe Aerith) are jumping timelines whenever Sephiroth is defeated in a timeline. Because the only major plot differences will be at the end (like they were in part 1) this theory would keep all the crazy stuff added in chapter 18 and reconcile it with Square Enix saying in interviews that the rest of the series will follow the original story closely.

I think the President Shinra scene was probably the one I missed the most, but at the same time would not have had the same impact anyway. The more prevalent Sephiroth had already let on that he was the bigger threat before we got to the office. In the original, that scene hit hard because it was a weird anti-climax where your realized as a player that the game had a larger story to it. As much as I wanted that feeling again, it really didn't make sense to the new arc they were creating that had to fill fulfilling with only the Midgar arc.

I went in still expecting an actual remake, not the meta narrative take on the series it ended up as. Had I also been in the mindset of this was a new experience, then I probably wouldn't have been as disappointed as I was. I wanted to relive this world in a new light, not the meta narrative, alt time line take they went with. So I left very bummed, making its small weaknesses stand out more like how most maps are just long hallways. But I can't deny they nailed the character personalities. I just wish it were more grounded story of rag tag group of freedom fighters getting in over their heads, not this meta, fate defying weird kingdom Hearts level of symbolic meta story stuff. I'm so tired of those sorts of stories from square and this title definitely solidified that maybe I've outgrown games, these aren't for me anymore. I expected story changes, but not like this. More like the changes that added the mission with Jessie and company, not changes like there are ghost embodiments of story canon floating around. That's just dumb and makes character motivations all over the place cause they stay on track with the story then these things pop up suddenly and just as quickly they seem to forget they're there. I just. .. this wasn't for me. Shame I had to play through the whole game before I found out. Wish square was upfront with their intentions in marketing for this game. In my opinion, i believe the whispers are die hard fans in a way. Stopping anything that is different from the original game and trying to keep others alive or kill them to stay on the original timeline. I also believe that Aerith and Sephiroth are from the original game timeline because they know everything that is going to happen. What backs up my theory is a few key scenes. The biggest one being when zack survives shinra and you see the slightly different doggo logo making me believe that he is from a different timeline where he survives.
Other key scenes are when Tifa asks Aerith to do something for her before the plate collapses and right away Aerith says, you want me to save Marlene right? There is no way Aerith would know Marlene or know that Tifa was going to ask her that. Another scene where you are in sector 6 with Aerith in the children hideout where one of the hooded cloak guys is passing through and cloud mentions Sephiroth, the camera zooms in on Aeriths lips and she says... Oh...right. Like she already knew who Sephiroth is and what he is going to do. Also, when Sephiroth and cloud are at the end of the universe and Sephy says...not yet, to Cloud confirming that he knows they are going to fight each other but its too early.
When he says you have seven seconds to Cloud, this could either be the 7 seconds when meteor crashes into Midgar(i timed the cutscene in the original and its about 7 seconds until the lifestream comes in and stops it.) Or it could mean Aeriths death. It takes seven seconds(timed it) for Sephy to come down and stab her. Anyway, this is my theory and im super excited for part 2! Please don't take my theory as fact. Lol. Thank you for this review death!

I agree that the "Whispers" are the die hard fans who wanted an *EXACT* copy of the old game... and I can appreciate that, them (the devs) putting *their* enemy into the game as *your* enemy, and by having you "defeat" them, you are freeing up the Devs to make a *new* game... Parts 2, 3, and on. It could have come across *REALLY* wrong and a risky move... but, so far, I think they did it right.
As for Aerith *AND* Sephiroth being from the OG... I disagree, slightly. In my own head cannon, Sephiroth, as we've seen him so far in the remake, is the *OG* Sephiroth. But this Aerith, *is* a new one, but has visions/info/etc with the Lifestream being a Cetra. My *hope* is that this time.... Cloud dies...(big shocker and twist, but makes sense. The other 3 have already died. Those being Sephiroth [alien male], Jenova [Alien Female], Aerith [Gaia Female], Cloud [Gaia Male], and his death would "Bring balance back to the force" ) and... Aerith... gives holy.... to... *NEW* Sephiroth... instead of the Black Materia at the Northern Cave. See, *OG Sephiroth *STILL* wants to "win" i.e. "Sail the darkness of the cosmos with this planet as his Vessel..." ... but in this *new* / older timeline... there is *STILL* the OLD Sephiroth body. And besides the *OG* Sephiroth *ALREADY* has the Black Materia.... but if we gave Sephiroth Holy instead of Black... could we have the real *HERO* he could have been? Cause if I know *ANYTHING* ... it's that Sephiroth would not take loosing to *ANYONE* .... even if that anyone was himself. So unless they don't play around with Sephiroth having gone back in time, I don't see Two Sephiroths playing nice with each other... and the enemy of my enemy is my friend... especially if that somehow makes Sephiroth my friend.
I know it's a little crazy....but if they are going to let Zack live, then why can't Sephiroth become the good guy he always wanted to be... especially if there's *already* an evil version of him... IDK just my thoughts.

Really enjoyed the review. It’s really well thought out and definitely appreciate it. Only thing I would ask is what if you looked at FF7R from an emotional journey kind of perspective?
If you’re a fan, the emotions you have are heightened with the homages to the lore and characters throughout the first 17 chapters and your confusion towards the ending even more so, but the curiosity for answers is now present where as a 1 to 1 remake couldn’t’ve given you that. You’re now experiencing the feeling of wanting answers and the drive to continue on this journey to find out what lies beyond Midgar like how it felt back when we first left Midgar in the original. Then what if you’re a new fan?
If you’re a new fan the confusion for what those flash forward sequences are and what they mean and who Zach is and what’s the deal with fate and Sephiroth are all there to also drive your curiosity towards wanting answers and wanting to find out more, to understand what’s going on, just like the original had done for us.
But why is the emotional turmoil pretty similar for old fans and newcomers? Because of how good the characters are and how much you fall in love with them and care for them. Old fans want to know what happens to these old beloveds that have been expanded upon even more but but presented with an unfamiliar Midgar ending while new fans now want to know because they’ve gone through this whole new journey with these characters that they’ve fallen in love with and now care about what happens to them.
So if we honestly examine the emotional journey in the perspective of an OG fan and a first timer, I think both will have experienced a very similar emotional journey despite of both sides’ perspective and understanding of or lack of understanding of the game’s lore and characters.
And I think it’s this emotional journey, this investment into these characters and the care and wanting of fighting for a better outcome for them that the developers are trying to “remake” or “recreate” within the players.
And on that end I think this game does a fantastic job of doing that. Because if you’re a first timer then yes you won’t understand many of the flash forwards/flash backs but that’s what the later parts are for, aren’t they? To expand on what’s been presented and to slowly reveal the truth to you. Just like the original did for old fans.
And if you’re an old fan, you’re now experiencing the anxious feeling of the unknown and the uncertain future of what’s after Midgar once again, just like in your first playthrough of the original. You’re also now discussing and looking towards the later parts, just like a newcomer is.
I say this because I played through the entire original when the remake trailer was presented at E3 2019. So yes, my feelings aren’t as deeply ingrained by the years as OG’s but without a doubt the original was such an emotional journey with amazing characters that despite its age it still resonates to me. And now having gone through the remake without having had years of attachments and yearning and only about 9 months in between, I found myself feeling these gittery anxious feelings at the end of the remake as I did when I left Midgar in the original. And the more I watch reviews and reactions like yours among others, I find that many are experiencing these wide mix of emotions and I’ll be damned if it isn’t impressive that a game that’s 23 years old is doing this. To get players to FEEL this much emotion, from both old AND new, I find is rare among the many titles in recent memory, save a few.
So, maybe the remake isn’t redefining what an epic adventure with amazing narrative beats and characters can be, but might it possibly be redefining what a “remake” is? A “remake” of emotions, of feelings, of love and fear and bewilderment and discovery, that trickles into the hearts of old and new?
Pretty mind blowing to me that a game can instill from first timers to fans of 23 years comparable emotions whom have drastically different perspectives, reasons and attachments.
Sincerest apologies to those who wasted their time reading this long thought essay c(=.

    • @SvjatoslavPodoplelov

Yeah, the game puts you through quite an emotional roller-coaster, especially if you have some prior knowledge of the characters and the world. It is passionate both in the story/writing itself and the delivery.
And I totally agree that the game redefines what a "remake" is. Not a cashgrab or just a clear cut job (like Crash Bandicoot/Spyro remakes). A remake can build upon the original and be its own thing, conveying genuine emotions not limited to nostalgia. This is perhaps the largest footprint FF7R will leave in the gaming world. Too bad the game isn't a huge hit and did not generate as much hype as it deserves.

This is a Sephiroth redemption story.
He feels guilty for destroying the human race and is trying to change fate.
His little conversation with Cloud about changing things together means that it’s something Cloud would also like to do.
Aeris’ change of heart confirms this. She says Sephiroth is not trying to save the planet, which is true since the planet saw humanity as a threat, but then decides it is the best course of action. She wants to save the human race also.

The problem with "this-guy-are-sick" being written into the story in the way you described is that this timeless joke among Western fans was never a thing in the Japan, because the original Japanese version did not contain the typo. Therefore, when making the remake, for a student to say the line and have the teacher correct him would have necessitated additional recorded dialogue to be crammed into a certain portion, and possibly new animation for the interaction between the characters. What they should have done instead--and what I've always wanted from them in a remake--was simply give Western audiences a Playstation trophy that is a nod to the original line. We did not get such a thing, unfortunately, but it's not a deal breaker.
