Hello world, Few days back I saw the Icy underwater illustration done by Dave Chenell. and I thought to make this video for you guys. Here I'll show you how you can create his 'Cool' looking Underwater scene silhouette Illustration in Adobe Illustrator. This time our main Weapon is Gradient Tool. Additionally you'll learn how to randomize opacity of multiple objects using my free script.

May seem like a basic question, but how is it that when you draw shapes that bleed off the artboard, they don't even appear? My default is that the shapes are visible off the edges, and are distracting.

This is so amazing. I saw the illustration of this 1,5 years ago. I just begon my education as a graphic designer. I was so amazed how it was made and decided to try and make it myself. It turned very nice and was a good exercise. Now i have found this video and it is so informative. I'm happy that i found your account. I want to do a lot of illustrations in illustrator so thanks for this account!

Hi! I'm a beginner in design and I'm so glad to have found your channel. Your designs are really good. Ik it's a basic question but could you tell how you have those colours already made as swatches. are those swatches or shapes? and how do you know already which colours exactly are you going to use? I'm glad you found what you were looking for.
Those are ordinary rectangle shapes. So it helps to pick colors using Eyedropper.
First I created a completed scene, then I decided which colors to use. Then I record the video for it.

10:54 Eveytime I try to do this I keep getting these tiny bright stripes down each edge of the rectangles because it looks like they're still overlapping eachother by a pixel when they should be snapped right to the edge of eachother.

I have decided to follow this tutorial and everything has been going smoothly but when I get to making a clipping mask of the rays and water, the rays do not appear :c I'm pretty sure I have done something wrong with the rays but I can't figure out what it is

Artboard size is 564X1002 px @ 72 dpi for Screen. and 300 dpi for Printing.

hi! this is so great and i have a question, i’m a real beginner when it comes to ai and i’ve come to a stump with 2:09 ! how did you transform the shape like that? my direct selection tool doesn’t seem to do that to shapes!
Select that path & Add Point using the Pen Tool.

i cant mask the whale :(
i double clicked the white part of the whale but it goes into isolation mode and i cant select the 3 blue transparencies, but in the video it doesnt look like it goes to isolation mode.
can anyone help?

You don't need to double click anything. After Creating White Shape and 3 other Transparent Shapes, You Duplicate White Shape in Front of All (Ctrl C & Paste in Front - Ctrl F), Select all The Whale Parts, Right Click - Create Clipping Mask (Ctrl 7). Done.
If clipping Mask is not your preference, You can use Shape Builder tool to Trim Out exceeded 3 transparent parts.
Now try these steps & let me know. All the Best

When I'm trying to use the eye dropper tool to add a color to a gradient, it changes the whole shape's fill instead of just the one gradient slider. How do I fix this!! :(
Hold Shift while picking.
How are you using color picker to change gradient slider color 0:46 sec? Whenever I try to do it selects the object I'm trying to pick color from.
After clicking on one of those Gradient Handle, You will need to switch to the Eye Dropper Tool with Keyboard key "i". Then pick color with Holding "Shift".
I've made a video fully dedicated to eye dropper tool. That tool does more than you think.

Thank you. The original design is the property of DaveChenell. I've just shown you the method. So If you make *enough changes* that won't make it look like a copy then you can go for it.

+Дима Насвит Yes. Shape Builder Tool doesn't work with "Clip Masked Shape". But It does work with "other shapes" INSIDE "clip group".
You are probably selecting WHOLE Clip Group. Which doesn't work.
So I selected whale's fin-shadow and White Whale-Shape. And trimmed out fin shadow with Shape Builder tool.
