You may not do exactly the same foot movements in a game but the balance and muscles necessary to allow for quick and powerful lateral movements are being exercised, not to mention the confidence.

Does the second drill (kareoka?) apply to a gameplay situation, using that cross behind in addition to the cross in front? Or is it just for breaking comfort level?

I like to use the term “cross over step beside” the term can then be transferred to forward cross over mechanics when doing cross overs on a circle.
These seem like really good drills. How do they get used though in a skating situation?

It's a great drill for improving balance and leg coordination. I did it today on ice and had to come later here to see how it's instructed.
