  • I'm looking for old images of the Glendale Galleria! Here are a few scenes from "Cloak & Dagger" filmed at the Glendale Galleria shopping mall in the early-1980s. Visible are Ohrbach's, Morrow's Nut House, and the Game Keeper store with video games on display!
    Does anyone have any more 1980s footage or photos from the Glendale Galleria? I would LOVE to see them!

    I frequented the Glendale Galleria during the 80's. Those were some of my favorite times as a child. I can remember the ornamental clock and the glass elevator with its bright, shiny lightbulbs. They were two of the mall's most iconic symbols. There would be the Korean portrait artist, well-known for his paintings of U.S. presidents. Next to his studio would be the pet shop. Everyone would go and pet the furry loveables, tap on the glass windows which housed them, and tease the squawking parrots. Next to the pets shop was a KayBee toys store, which was cool! I was able to purchase my G.I.Joes, Voltron, ThunderCats, SilverHawks, M.A.S.K, or Transformers from there! On the mall's second level, there was a Kodak photoprinting shop. It was a few storefronts from the videogame shop for which scenes from this "Cloak and Dagger" movie were filmed. The Kodak shop had a window for which passerbys can watch photos being processed and sorted from a conveyor-like machine. On occasions, the Galleria would have special events such as the LEGO exhibit of world monuments (i.e. Statue of Liberty, Taj Mahal) or the Santa Claus meet and greet (and pricy phototaking). I can remember Santa handing out plastic, Santa rings that looked like Ringpops. But, my most cherished and fondest memory of the Galleria of the 80's was going to the ice cream store next to the Radio Shack. I think it was a Baskin Robbins. Upon entering, there would be the vintage, clown on unicycle zipping back and forth on a tightrope. That was awesome! That captivated my attention and curiosity. Then, of course, my family and I would purchase either a single or double-scoop on sugarcones. Mine was the chocolate ice cream. These were the simple, wonderful days!! We need to have more of these, especially during this chaotic time of racial/civil unrest, global COVID-19 pandemic, staggering growth of homelessness, hunger, and climate change.

      Your recall of the mall's details is excellent. One of my family's favorite spots was the coffee shop that was next to the elevator closest to JCPenney. And I mourn all the seating that was taken out to discourage "resting". Pretty shortsighted decision 'cuz a tired shopper is one who will likely head home sooner.

      wow.. that pet store was called pet love!.. and it had a parrot in the front that could talk.
      my favorite memory was when glendale galleria had fao schwarz and right when you walked in you would hear the song 'welcome to our world of toys'.

    I remember I went in 2011 and couldn't believe how tired and old the mall looked. I returned in 2023 and thankfullyl it has had a refurbishment. But personally, I like this 80s look. It has a lot of warmth to it.

    The "New" Twilight Zone from the mid-'80s had an episode "The After Hours" that was filed entirely in the Glendale Galleria, mostly in and around JC Penney's and Toy International.

    I actually grew up in Glendale as a young kid in the 80's and remember going in the Game Keeper! Who else remembers this store in the Glendale Galleria that had all these high tech gadgets, LED phones, and video games? I think it was called "Future Time" or something...

      @@AdamConlea That's it... Futuretronics! Wow, it's funny how I remembered that place. I also remember Kay Bee Toys, the big glass elevator in the center, Don's Toys, GNC, Boys Will Be Boys... So Adam, how old are you? Did you grow up in Glendale as well back in the 80's?

    • @AdamConlea
      @AdamConlea  5 років тому +1

      @@JSC178 I was 12 in 1976 when the Glendale Galleria opened, so I spent part of my youth (and adulthood there), especially in the 1980s when I would make the rounds at all the toy and electronics stores looking for the latest video game cartridges (remember Babbage's and Electronics Boutique?). I still live in the area, but have become quite disillusioned with the place since Americana at Brand opened across the street, forcing the Galleria to "modernize." The brick interior has been covered up with drywall, the wooden railings with metal, and the once-carpeted floors are now faux-marble, shiny and white. The warm, homey atmosphere we enjoyed is now sterile and cold. So sad.

    • @JSC178
      @JSC178 5 років тому

      @@AdamConlea I hear ya, it's definitely not homey and cozy like it used to be. As a matter of fact, most malls aren't. It really is sad that they had to modernize but that's just the way of things, I guess. At least we have our memories though, right? And yes, I do remember Babbage's and Electronics Boutique! I used to go to both of those stores to pick up Super NES games back in the early 90's. I was born in '78 so I'm a little younger than you but can still definitely relate to the 80's and 90's era. Those days were awesome. Whereabouts do you live in Glendale? I used to live up near Kenneth and Dorothy Drive growing up. I reside in Long Beach now but end up in Glendale from time to time doing Uber, since I drive for them full-time. My dad used to live right near the fire station across from the mall over on Columbus. I love driving around the old neighborhood whenever I come to town!

    MAC Cosmetics is located in place of where the Game Keeper stood in this clip. That area of the mall was reconfigured in the late-1980s when Ohrbach's closed and its space was turned into more mall shops.

    Totally found E.T. in there once. Near the clock tower. Outside of JC Penney and near the Florsheim shoe store. Yep. He had a bunch of lollipops from See's Candies and was muttering something about how great a pitcher Vance Lovelace might be some day. Yep. Totally from outer space.
