- Yung Singh and Ministry of Sound present: The Birth of Punjabi Garage
The documentary has a wealth of unseen archive footage showing exactly how it was in the garages and studios of the young Bradford and Manchester lads from the beginning, to the events, weddings and festivals that marked their success. The documentary is bookended by Yung Singh and his infamous and iconic Boiler Room, giving credit to the elders who paved the way for the continuation of South Asian presence in British dance culture.
This documentary was produced in tandem with Yung Singh and is the first documentary to explore the genre. Documentaries have covered Bhangra, the 80s Daytimers and the Asian Underground but the South Asian diaspora’s involvement in the early 2000s Garage scene has never been covered and we are therefore proud to bring this to you!

White boy here. I've been listening to BBC's Asian FM and loving it for over a decade. My mates never understood me. Dance/electronic is my bread and butter, but when a traditional beat gets electrified it's 🔥🔥🔥
Yess my guy 💯💯
Great work everyone!!! SHouts to Yung Singh & Co for sharing this with everyone!!! Massive thanks to
Ministry of Sound. Give us a follow everyone and look out for our new singles and projects !! Respect
Pioneers. Now its just all evolved and not pioneered!
Born & raised in Leeds ... I lived through this era , bought the tapes / cds. It was a great fusion of sounds Kuly RDB was something else 🙏 .
Gubi Sandhu is still like Elvis to the Pakistani community 🤣
I grew up on Punjabi Garage in the early 00s. Absolutely iconic. And now I’m a massive fan of all genres of dance and have been learning to DJ myself so I guess it’s come full circle. ❤️❤️❤️
Good documentary. Unlocked a few memories.
Got to shoutout Black British culture too. That influence on this era of British Asian music was huge too.

Great job celebrating a genuinely unique cultural movement. I was out here in California copping them tapes! Keep it up.
Great tribute here and glad it’s been documented. Being a teenager at the time this scene was really something.
growing up in the 90s speaking punjabi at home, listening to names like Bindrakhia, Gurdas Maan etc. This scene was hugely influential and truly embodied many kids likes us -
the same vocals but reimagined in the new Millennium garage sound, everything sounded futuristic, modern, engineered yet still remnants of the familiarity of home.
It will always be authentic and unique, in an age now where punjabi music is released like fodder in the digital space.
Nice work! thanks for this mini documentary
