Gateshead High St Is DEAD! + Security Staff Challenge Me For Filming!

- Since making this video I have clarified the land ownership of the pedestrianised area of Trinity Square.
That land is privately owned but of course it is open for public access and public right of way.
In terms of the current law in England; being in a ‘public place’ and being in an area ‘accessible to the public’ are two entirely different things. You can think of Trinity Square as being of a similar environment to Eldon Square (without a roof). If the land owner stipulates that filming is prohibited, then it is and they have the right to ask someone to stop filming.
Therefore the security guard is quite within his right to ask me to stop filming, entirely if needs be, but he didn’t and on this occasion I thought he dealt with me very politely and professionally.
In terms of lawful powers to prevent filming on private property, this is a topic some UA-cam auditors love to exploit, but fail to differentiate between what’s lawful and what’s enforceable. They will then bully the individual, causing humiliation and embarrassment.
For example, the security guard wouldn’t be allowed to put their hands on me and forcibly remove, or detain me, unless I was committing a criminal offence (which I wasn’t), in order to make a citizen’s arrest. I would have been committing an offence of trespass, this is a civil offence. Should the security guard have insisted I stop filming, or leave and I didn’t, they can (in theory) pursue a civil trespass prosecution, but only if they have one’s name and address. You can see how this situation can easily be exploited.
I know the law on filming in public very well, but in the moment he informed me that it was private land I didn’t want to be behave like a prat, as I wasn’t in a position to challenge him on the land ownership.
So, what I wasn’t going to do, was to attract unnecessary attention to myself and to place him in the potentially embarrassing position of attempting to deal with me, should I have adopted a dogmatic stance on this. I think this is unnecessarily provocative and ignorant.
It's not the run down shops that is the issue with Gateshead town centre, it's the smackheads and alcoholics. One every 5 yards!
It's what the government wants
Lived in and around London for 15 years and been back to north east in Gateshead since October last year. I was shocked by how many druggies there were in the town centre, divvies riding pit bikes in the housing estates, 40 year olds blasting new monkey in their Zafira whilst picking up the kids from school 😂 I get that it happens in a lot of places but some of the behaviour up here is just embarrassing.
Other day there was a couple of Middle Aged radgies drinking on the benches, police just spoke to them and didn’t even tell them to discard of the tinnys, local authorities do nothing to tidy the place up of the smackheads and alcoholics
Its the whole area even South Shields has gone right down hill.
That's Part of the problem, yes, that's also something the council to deal with. X x
Agree with your assessment in general
I’m was born on Gateshead high street and grew up living there - so I have an affinity with the place
That’s the reason me and my partners have decided to help regenerate the place
We own The Tynesider
It’s just a pity you came on a day we were closed for maintenance issues and snagging - I would’ve invited you in
We have also purchased the building next door which we plan to turn into high spec apartments and I’m also involved in the potential refurb of the old Kwik Save building you passed
We are now fully commited to making Gateshead High street a decent place again
Watch this space
Be my guest to call into The Tynesider for a beer sometime
You may be surprised
Keep up the good work
Cheers Lee, I actually popped my head in while I was filming and spoke to a short chap who seemed connected to the place. It looks great. I didn’t realise you had other projects too and it’s great news that a new pub is opening on the High St!
Love your videos, saw you at the Bigg Market Reunion. I’m Lee’s partner and grew up and live in Gateshead. Lee couldn’t be more local to the High Street as was born on the street behind where his parents still live now. I thought he was mad when he told me he wanted to open a pub on the High Street but it’s really great that there’s independents popping up now. Sapori Italian restaurant is a lovely place and the bars around the Railway Quarter are a great night out and definitely putting Gateshead on the social map again. We are both really passionate about improving the area it’s sad that’s the state of our High Street. I’m involved in a few community and volunteer projects . There’s the Big Help Out this weekend which is an initiative to improve Gateshead town centre asking volunteers to help paint fences, plant flowers and litter pick this Friday and Saturday. We are helping if anyone else would like to join to help make Gateshead better again they can apply www.gateshead.gov.uk/article/28277/The-Big-Help-Out-comes-to-the-town-centre
@@NurseLuisaNewcastleSkinClinic thank you Luisa. We need more people like you and Lee.
I litter pick every single day when out walking with my dogs. I find it very therapeutic
I @@NurseLuisaNewcastleSkinClinic I passed through Gateshead today, on Jackson Street, volunteers were planting flowers and digging the borders. It really gives you a lift that there are people that care about their community. Well done and thank you to all those involved ❤
Appreciate the efforts like, not sure spenny high spec apartments are what the people of Gateshead need though. Rent in average placea are already pricing people out
I'm 64 years old and born and bred in Gateshead (Low Fell) and moved to Norway in 1986.
From a young age I used to take the bus to Shepherds to meet my grandparents every Saturday, went shopping at the Coop. When I was older I had some good nights, at the Trafalgar.
My dad and me used to go to all of the Newcastle home games and parked the car at a car park directly across the road from the Town Hall and walked over the Tyne Bridge up to the ground.
Gateshead used to be a busy place to be but it looks so depressing now after watching your video.
I have to admit most of my family have since moved to Newcastle and when I visit I never go back to my birthplace Gateshead - shame.
Wow, you have just taken me down memory lane as its over 40 years since I used to go shopping in the town centre with my parents. Shepherds of Gateshead was a regular store for shopping along with the CO-OP and Littlewoods. So sad to see town centre demise across the country. Thanks for the video👍
Born and bred in Gateshead until I left 20 years ago. I purposely visited last week to see how it has changed and it is truly an awful high street.
It is. But it’s much better than what it was 😅
Great video Eddy, drinking back in the late 80s it was top notch.
But these plans for the town centre have been on ice for years, I think the only thing they have done is open the road up from Sunderland Road.
One thing they need to do is allow security to get rid of those toerags who always hang about just off Jackson Street.
Being a Gateshead lad it’s sad to see how much it’s run down
Im 53 and Gateshead high street has always been a s...hole, i hate going there, Gateshead council should be ashamed. See you encountered the local rats.
Great video as always
The only passable nice part is Trinity Square. But it's only been open for 11 years. Wait another decade and it'll be run down just like the High Street near Matalan.
Gateshead Council are disgusting landlords.
Council has purposely made it worse because they want to cut down on car usage.
I had a shot every time Purple top security man said “Obviously”. Mortal drunk now 😊
Aye, my tummy is starting to churn..😨 I had a head start like.. 🤣
KnobHeed. He should have signed up upon leaving School.
Arsehole would own a Better Attitude.
Shame they aren't so quick to move smackheads on.
He's obviously a big fan of Peter Beardsley.
@@TheBigT79 Obviously!
Cheers from Seattle Eddy! The Dean Taxis sighting made me homesick. Thanks for the update on my home town. I know it’s kind of sad when they try to modernise old towns like Gateshead and they end up becoming clinical, cookie cutter modern shopping areas with Vue cinemas etc (and jobsworthy security guards!) but I do think it’d be good for Gateshead if they somehow modernised/rejuvenated the old high street as well, or at least redeveloped or made it a more desirable place for people to live/work/play. Hopefully by giving a better life to the community it’ll help heal some of the more troubled or addicted people who now tend to hang around there. They need better opportunities for life!
The High Street was thriving when I grew up in Gateshead in the 1970s. The empty plot you passed used to be Gateshead Odeon cinema. The flyover system built in the late '60s only succeeded in taking people straight into Newcastle, thus avoiding Gateshead. The Metro system from 1981 did the same. The Metrocentre in 1986 was another hammer blow to the town centre. Sad to see now.
I remember going to Laws for a sarsaparilla with my Dad while my Mam went to Rumbelows to pay the TV rent.
Oh my God I did that as well. We had a fad to go to the Dance studio next door and then have a sarsaparilla (had to look up spelling Ha). Thats got to be mid to late 50s for me.
Thank you (amended ). I would never have got that right !
I thought it was called laws! My mam used to take me there for a sasparilla too. The same man worked there for a lot of years
Laws Stores had alot of shops. Our local one was in Blaydon precinct. I live in Leeds now and my neighbour managed a Laws store in Sunderland. He's in final stages of dementia now but when I visit him I always mention it and he smiles in recognition. My husband's surname is Laws and his family origins are from Sunderland.
Oh my LAWS; I loved going to LAWS in the 60s, 70s & 80s where I had a sasp; It was a great little shop; There was also that Butcher shop where you could get a wonderful Saveloy dip or a Pork n Stuffing bun; Gateshead is lost now; It might never recover;
7:14 that guy has just discovered what mobile phones are😂😂😂😂
Hahahaha! Class!
Gateshead has always been rough to be fair. I remember when it had a multi storey car park and someone threw Alf Roberts off the top.
Now you made me have to go look up the theme tune, and I'll have to find the movie online.
I like the Vue Cinema. Great value for money. If you walk a bit further down about 2-3 minutes to the arches on Wellington Street you'll pass some more small business cafes and shops. I was recently in Big Fat Doughnut and was quite impressed with the choice and decor inside. I'll be revisiting this summer.
Hi Eddie from Tyneside life. Always loved your channel no matter the subject, but it is good to see the videos that are not just concentrating on the beautiful game. These, to me, are just as entertaining as I love the history of anything involved with our Tyneside life. Both Newcastle and Gateshead, North Shields and South Shields, Wallsend and Jarrow, to Newburn and Ryton, have as much interesting history to us all as even after living here for 56 years you teach me things that I never even knew! Keep it up mate and never stop your channel.
My weekend is now sorted. Gonna go to Gateshead High Street and look for the guy in purple and just follow him around filming him. Once I get bored of that, it's off to the Bull for a couple pints.
That security guy is wrong. You're in a public space, so you can record.
aye as kaybee says. its not private property its a public street , the landowner is the Council , the company running the centre/mall is private but on public land. its open to the public. otherwise every shoplifter would be committing burglary (theft as a trespasser ) not shoplifting lol and the local police wouldnt want those figures.
Omg I have spent so much of my life over the last 40-odd years around there. That was my gym too for awhile, my drum tutor was next door to the Tynesider, in the 80s I lived up the road in the three storey flats where they filmed Get Carter!
Yep! That’s my understanding
If it was on Trinity Square, then that land is owned by Tesco. they can actually stop you from smoking a cigarette. It's private land.
Turns out Gateshead, is owned by Tesco, and they are landlords for most of the shops also
Another good video Eddie. I've said it for ages, Gateshead town centre is hands down the worst town centre in Tyne & Wear. Place has always been rough. Only place I've ever been mugged in broad daylight. T'was always thus, though. Ironically, Gateshead has some nice suburbs (and I live in one), so it's not all bad! However, I think they should just level the south side and build some decent housing. The place is more or less unviable with the toon on it's doorstep. Be a good place to live for workers in the city centre.
The land is owned by Tesco says a lot when large supermarkets get a hold of a town smaller businesses suffer sadly.... Cost of living crisis while Tesco make record profits humm... sorry to go off on a tangent but bugs the hell out of me
I used to love to come to Gateshead to shop in the indoor market. I used to get the red Go North East bus from Wallsend. The problem is all of these towns look exactly the same now, same shops same coffee shops. There is no longer any point visiting from another town as everywhere is the same. Its as if the heart has been ripped out of places, such a shame .
Should have gone to the dead Civic Center, get Martin Gannon out to explain the mess. He might be in the bar if they still have one. The rent office has gone, so I take it the bar is still in there. Watch how Gateshead changes for the better when he's gone. He could be down the quayside, sucking up to developers. Telling locals it brings people to the area to spend money, that Gateshead never sees.
I remember going to Shepherds of Gateshead at Christmas with my Mam.
My Mam worked there in the 60’s 😃
Shepherds built a wonderful panoramic restaurant overlooking the Tyne in the early 60’s it was considered at the time “ quite posh “ for a department store
As a bloke born in the 1950's in Bensham who hasn't been back to Gateshead town centre for about 40 years, I find this quite sad ☹
Sad video, I was naming all the old shops that used to be in Gateshead as you were walking around. Laws Herbal Supplies (With the famous Sarsaparilla) Woolworths, Ward Watson (Next to the Trafalgar), La Bodega, M&Ms,The Nickelodeon with the bingo through the back 😂😂
The council are to blame for the state of the place. They have made it a nightmare to drive around the place to get parked with bus lanes and blocked off roads. If there not careful Newcastle will follow because they’ve done the same over there to.They have some kind of war going on with motorists and it’s driving people away.
Brought back loads of memories back in the day. Really good to watch.
I was brought up in Lobley Hill but now live in western Canada but come over to visit family every 2-3 yrs and stay at the premier inn at the team valley. Obviously we get into gateshead quite often and the high street is horrible. However last September while we were there we had to go up the west road in Newcastle to a cemetery there and that area is unbelievably disgusting.
That premier inn doesn't exist anymore, it's owned by another company now and used to house migrants
I was there in September 2023 and it was flourishing. The Premier inn I'm talking about is the one at Maingate, Kingsway north that used to be the Tulip, it's across the road from the Valley Farm pub. I just checked and it is still a hotel.
I think you may be getting confused with the other premier inn that was behind the waggon pub. That one was closed down a long time ago.
@geordienufc3132 Aye, it's the "Embassy Newcastle, Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western" near the waggon and the roundabout I'm on about
Luck you 😊

Brilliant video Eddie! I grew up on The Leam but my mam was from central Gateshead, she loved Gateshead.
I think it looks great in the main part but so sad all those closed shops.
I love being a Gateshead lass and hope things get better in the center of the Town.
Loved this Eddie!
I'm from Glasgow but I used to stay down in Gateshead for 5 years.i used to go into the Blue Bell pub to watch the Glasgow Rangers matches. I still come down to Gateshead/ Newcastle about 6 times a year. And I've said for years that the Gateshead council have let the people of Gateshead down by letting the High Street get into the state it now finds its self in. When the Blue bell closed a few years ago I heard it was because that whole block of shops were getting compulsory purchased by the council. And years later still nothing has happened.
SAMUEL Johnson once described Gateshead as the “dirty back lane leading to Newcastle”.
What a bloody shame whats happened to the high st, when i first started going in the drink the high st was jumping,, every pub was open, every pub was busy,, im fifty now and the desolation of the place breaks my heart,, my mam would take us shopping and you could fet everything,, ckithes at books and caesars littlewoods,, burtons,, the neeb on jackson st,, the old chip shop with the attatched wet fish shop, there was a Lloyds,, TSB,, Barclays.. snd a midlands bank as well as the building societys,, the indoor market was my mams favourite,, i could cry watching this video,, it sill never ever come back,, Oh i forgot we used to go to laws for a sasparilla and a liquorice root,, yum,,
Tesco is one of the main reasons most of the small family owned businesses aren't there anymore. Regardless of the regeneration of the highstreet.
I agree 👍🏻
Unit rent for shops is sky-high and people have no place to park without getting a ticket, they made it inaccessible for punters and too expensive for the shop owners - council wants to be shot with shit
Thanks for the tour... I left Gateshead in 1963! I saw some landmarks I recognised , but changed a lot as most places have I guess. Haven`t been in the high street for maybe 40 years !
hi i’m a former gateshead resident, joined the merchant navy on the key side in 1958 and nimmigrated to nyc in 1963! i was a member of gateshead harriet’s and a choirboy at st cuthberts! i delivered newspapers from ben nevins on derwentwater road! to see the video of gateshead empty and desolate is depressing! nyc is dangerous but i reside in greenwich village which is nice! i’ve not been home in 50 years but miss the humor ! please keep on posting fabulous truths
Good to hear your interesting comments from a fellow Gateshead resident ex merchant navy 👍
This is my home town too, live in Newcastle now, this breaks my heart. I’m 66 now and was brought up in Regent court behind the high street and loved living there, I only ever go to Gateshead now to visit cemetery and family graves, I’ve been to town centre once since the old car park came down, not a fan of new town centre….
Born in Gateshead 1948 but now live in Perth Western Australia. I was back in Gateshead a few months ago & couldn't believe how bad the town centre was. I remember it from the 60's & earlier it was such a busy shopping area with shops like Littlewoods, Shepherds etc. The place is dead now & so depressing. Can't believe the council have let this happen.
Your lucky you got out😊
My wife and I also emigrated to Perth W.A. in 1982, we also found Gateshead to be depressing, which is a shame as I had many happy memories of going to the Odeon Saturday morning Cinema (the place was packed with kids) back in the 1960s. Still I suppose we all could do with a bit of restoration work after all these years.
The council should be held to account for the mess they have made in the town centre. They are the only ones who gave the green light for the demolition of the ugly Trinity Square and car park only to rebuild an even uglier shopping centre with the student accommodation above. I just wonder if I'll still be alive to see the drawings of the High Street come to fruition
Council are now slum lords
BTW thanks for covering Gateshead. Honestly I don't remember Gateshead High Street ever being anything other than run down. I used to get the bus through everyday to school in the late Sixties through the Seventies. Again passing through with my American kids in the 2000s. To me it looks so similar and the absence of change is depressing. But it really is the very worst part of Gateshead. There are better places not too far from there.
Thank you for taking the time out to make this documentary 👏 I can’t remember when Gateshead high street ever looked good but I have fond memories of working in shepherds and every Thursday night (pay day) visiting the trafalgar. Dave Buxton was the manager in the mid seventies. Loved it and miss it . Thank you!😀👍
I'm originally a Gateshead lad born and raised and the Council has NEVER given us a town centre befitting of such a big and formerly bustling town. It's ALWAYS been a dive, let's be honest, just less of a dilapidated one than it is now. The Traf was always unpleasant and grim AF, certainly by the mid-late 90s. But it's OUR shithole at the end of the day. #ProudToBeAGeordie
The traf was legendary in how bad and rough it was honestly you had to see it to beleive it. There were some other shocking pubs that I went it while living in gateshead in the early 2000s the Portland the blue Bell and the greyhound all in felling were horrendous. Anyway I got offered a council house in New biggin Hall Newcastle so jumped at the chance and took it now bare in mind Newbiggin Hall has a bad reputation too but compared to gateshead it was a step up 😂😂😂
Remember wen I was younger goin on the train north east is a proper England place u get a different feeling about it
The indoor Gateshead market was great. My mate used to work in the Trafalgar too. The one thing that Gateshead now is missing is a market. It’s also great to hear they’ve reopened the long vacant Gateshead Leisure Centre.
As the King of Gateshead, love to see you back :). Sorry about the purple goons, they deal with a lot of radgies every day sadly.
Weird that he’d be bothered about Eddy filming considering the amount of actual Knobheads they deal with daily
@@Flyingwithoutmings i think he knew he would be on youtube and wanted the limelight. But i can not prove it lol
The tower block behind, Warwick Court, that’s getting pulled down alongside Eslington and Redheugh down the Teams.
Great video Eddy a real eye opener
Great video pal ~ It’s a sad state. That’s my home growing up and me and my Dad used to pop down on a Sunday morning for a few pints before lunch and the place was thriving in the late 80s early 90s Hope they do spend some money and turn it back to a decent place to visit
Hi Eddie good video I was born in Gateshead. I know how much it’s declined over the years very sad. Used to drink in the Trafalgar with my dad it’s sad it’s gone. Other pubs Down the street it’s sad. Used to go in the park lane also shut. Remember Woolworths back in the day. Good video anyway
I used to go busking near Iceland / Gateshead Metro in the 1980s. Way back in the 1970s I would come down to Gateshead Centre one Saturday a month with my Nana. She'd buy fish and we'd head back to the Leam Lane and have lovely fish and chips whilst watching the skiing on "World of Sport."
The new shops look great if a little bland, Curleys and the Metropole etc never looked very friendly even when Gateshead was thriving.
I live in Mexico now. Eddy - many thanks for your videos, could you do one on the Leam Lane Estate or Washington please?
Stay cool everyone.
Alan.
Martin Gannons legacy eddy, hes got a lot to answer too
Moved to Scotland 40 years ago, video brought back memories especially the Trafalgar, looks a sorry state re high st and Jackson st although trinity sq is an improvement. Let’s hope there are more improvements to come. Paul
So much for 'levelling up' The Noth East is always left out.
Left out?
Looked like there was plenty of migrants coming our way in the vid.
That's what they ment about levelling up.
If the place wasn't already so desperate as it already is.
The sods , send even more dole wallers and benefit dependents up ere, to suck off the council budget.
The north east has enough on our plates to deal with , economically, without adding to it with more benefit dependants.
No more diversity. Just hard working folk adding to the pot, instead of raping it.
And backhand every smack head and trouble maker out the town centre.
Trinity square cost over £120m back in 2012. Absolutely threw money at something that was never gonna work
@@petermontgomery8707 Politics and making money, that never works and we always pay for their mistakes.
Wouldn’t say the north east is anymore left out than the north west or the West Midlands
Great vid Eddie
The metrocentre killed off Gateshead for good ,
Drank in the traf for years , shopped at shepherds, drank sasp from laws once a vibrant if somewhat dangerous night out in the 80's.
Hope you come do whickham village
Great video Eddy, out of all the pubs that used to be within walking distance of each other, only The Met, The Grwy Nags Head, Curleys, William IV & The Old Fleeze have outlasted ever over pub.
Back in the 1940's opposite Jackson Street Co-op was the Civic Restaurant where one could use ration coupons to get a meal. Ah! The good old days. I remember well in the early 1950's going to see the original Dambusters film at the Odeon opposite the junction with Sunderland Road.
My dad was a projectionist at the odeon Gateshead in the late 30’s early 40’s before he was called up
Brilliant memories Roger 👊🏻👍🏻
It's in tough competition Gateshead High St. You've got Newcastle city centre less than a mile north. The metrocentre a few mile to the west. What new business is gonna pick the area, if you have 2 options nearby, which both get higher footfall. Sad to see nevertheless. We can only hope one day, it'll be revived.
Eddie, I heard Sunderland sing the Blaydon Races too. In fact, I heard ManU fans singing it at their matches as well. My fondest memory of Gateshead is going to the fireworks at Saltwell Park. My father used to take me and my brother every year to the Bonfiree Night there in the late 70s.
They sing the Sunderland races version. It’s just a copy of ours. Same as Man Utd.
We have the original 👊🏻
Great video, bring back “Shepherds of Gateshead, the biggest and the best, find what yr looking for…and the parking is free for the whole familee “.
Dominated Gateshead in the 197os, with a great toy department on the top floor next to the cafe and bikes and fishing rods - nice to look at even if needed a lot of saving up. Littlewoods in Northumberland Street Newcastle, but can’t remember going in one in Gateshead. Don’t suppose there’s anything left of the Gateshead Odeon- happy memories of being taken to see Where Eagles Dare and The Battle of Britain amongst other greats. But as for the privatisation of the public realm by the likes of Tesco with their cctv and security guards……they might be better off dealing with shop lifters than decent folk doing a vlog…..but that would involve being useful to society.
Spent my primary years in the central Gateshead area. They closed quite a few schools which really pushed us out the area. I remember the old markets, signing in the old Tesco car park and city centre for school during Xmas and I remember the weekend markets and being sick on the rugs for sale after too much strawberry milkshake! Used to live in Gateshead from 1997 when I was born and then moved over Newcastle in my teens, so I've spent half my life in Gateshead and half in Newcastle.
I have to say moving over to Newcastle really made my love for NUFC grow. Love the Bridges in Newcastle have hundreds of photographs now and memories exploring. The views of the bridges, architecture and St James' does not compare to the boarded up streets of Gateshead
Born in Sheriff Hill 78 yrs ago Gateshead High Street, Jackson Street and Sunderland Rd were places to visit with my mum to go shopping. My Dad worked as a maintenence eng for the Dunston Co-op dairy until it closed and then worked in the Co-op town store. Shepherds and Littlewoods were frequented often. The first change and monstrosity was the 'Get Carter' car park, now I dont recognise any or all of it. So So sad to see it like this Eddie. I live near Brighton now and don't get back there that often. But still support the Toon so keep us informed as well eh! Love the Channel.
Thanks for sharing Jim 👊🏻👍🏻
Top video Eddie glad you made it out of the backalley of newcastle brave man 😬 it's a shame because it was a class night out in the late 80s early 90s happy days

It was about five years ago when I last walked down Gateshead High Street and it was pretty bad then, never mind now. After watching this, Eddy, I won't be back for some time! The council should hang their collective heeds in shame.
This is such a memory and it’s very sad to see this now. I used to live in Washington mid 90’s and would get the bus through Gateshead to go the Metro Centre or into Newcastle. I have lived down south since 98 and we have areas that are run down too. But it’s such a shame that looking at the place now, I’d give it a miss 😢
I used to live in Beacon Lough at the top of Sheriff Hill Bank,(Yes,I know it's not Gateshead High Street)and it was one of the most nastiest places I've ever had the misfortune to live. There were some really, nasty horrible people.
Holy shit.. it's almost unrecognisable, Eddy. I was born in Wardley, grew up in High Heworth, and spent loads of time as a youth in Gateshead Town centre, always venturing into Shephards department store. But I moved north of the river in my early twenties and have never been back into the town centre since. Thanks for this great video, and hopefully, there are better times ahead for my hometown. Cheers, Eddy.
toss up between that and shields road in byker and west road
Felling high street is pretty ropey too
To be fair the West Road is thriving it's just the people are of a different hue these days 😂

Enjoyed the tour and yes its high street is pretty grim indeed. I like Gateshead in general and regularly support the small businesses in The Arches as well as in Trinity Square. Easy access from the metro and the number 27 Bus.
Have seen it all get worse in the 5 years I have been back in the northeast but good to hear of a regeneration plan.
Looking forward to your next tour!!
Hi Jan, I forgot to cover the micro pubs in the arches 😬
I remember going to a gun shop in Gateshead back in the 80s. I was in awe, amongst terraced houses was a corner shop, I guess originally a typical grocery shop. It was rough, but the gear they had in there totally caught me by suprise. At this moment the name of the shop escapes me.
Great video im an old fold lad moved to South shields 20yr ago. Still have fond memories of the high Street meeting my nana outside the tip rank littlewoods cafe. Shopping city Bobby's night club. The indoor Market. So sad to see the state of it now
I used to drink on the high street in the 90s. Loads of great bars. Cotton club was great
Excellent video Eddie. I live on the other side of the river near the coast but often pass through here to see a friend in Bensham, for occasional visit to The Sage (Glasshouse)and Tanfield Railway at Sunniside.
I wish security would be as strict with "Gateshead's finest" as they are with innocent videographers! It annoys me when i am elsewhere doing my railway vids for You Tube on stations etc when we photograpgers can get picked on easily but anti social behavior is ignored.
Keep those great vids coming. Cheers, Jeff.
My vivid memories of Gateshead was Bobby Pattinson’s place, and Law’s herbal supplies, in which we got proper Sasparella. Shepard’s of Gateshead, as advertised in all the flea pits. All Gateshead seems to offer now is charity shops, and “ take aways”. I think the Metro Centre, and Team Valley helped kill it. Were it not for “Get Carter”, absolutely no one would care. I guess it’s Mackem equivalent would be Southwick, which, tbf, looks a bit more lively. Another good video Eddy.
Place I grew up in the 1970s changed a lot looks good will have to visit soon thankyou I love your videos keep them coming
I've lived in Gateshead for about 7-8 years now, I love living here & make use of the businesses available. I would love it if Gateshead Council did more to help local businesses in Gateshead so there is more for the people who live & work in Gateshead! X x
Wow that has changed, very interesting video once again 🙏
Very memorable journey through Gateshead, Thank you.
Thanks for the video mate really enjoying finding out more about the whole area 👍
Glad you got some of Gateshead's finest. Why they put the drug and alcohol service on Jackson Street beggars belief.
I also wasn’t aware that Trinity Square was private property, but there you go! I still live in Gateshead and it is absolutely disgraceful, like you I used to go to Gateshead with my Mam in the 70s when I was a kid and she’d take me to Laws herbalist for a glass of Sarsaparilla. I used to go to Woolworths and buy my records and a bag of Pick and Mix. I used to love the indoor market as well, you could buy anything in there. I loved the Trafalgar as well when I got old enough to have a drink. It’s sad to see it now. 6:01 6:01
It’s much better when you head down to the central, station east bar, micro pubs etc near the Hilton hotel in Gateshead that it is on the high street
You should definitely do a mini pub crawl round there. I'm thinking of organising a food & drink tour, start at Tynesider, Sapori, Railway East, Central, Microbus, Axis, Victor Indigo November or do it in reverse and then do all the bars south end of High Street - only for the hardcore 🤣
Yeah the redevelopment is impressive sad to see the south part of the city centre. Can you remember Shepherds? My mother used to get her Xmas presents in from there when I was a kid.
Excellent video Eddy. It wasn’t a bad night out Gateshead when i lived up that way .What a dimlo the security guard was .
Another great video. I was hoping you were gonna have a walk past the law court & police station to finish off.
Haven't been to the Heed in a while. The last time I was there, there were high rise flats behind the high street up from the park lane.
The high street has the same desirables, I see. Some things never change.
One time you go into gateshead and buy anything you could buy in Newcastle , it had all the major stores , the market , butcher and green grocers galore ! I knew a couple of the pubs where you could order a VHS video player and they would have it for you before you finished your 2nd pint , thats what I call service lol
Thanks for the video. Used to get to Blue Bell a lot. There was a pub at the bottom of town used to stay open late for coppers, cabbies and other people coming off nights and they'd often let us have a drink. Can't remember the name unfortunately? Haven't been around since '95.
Another great podcast Eddie. Never really went downtown Gateshead. Looks like I didn’t miss anything. How can anyone not miss a bit of green (grass, tress bushes etc). Its awful
Hey, you walked right past the Grey Nag's Head Pub and didn't say anything. I had a real nice afternoon there about a year ago. I was hoping you were gonna say; Aw, mate, this is the best pub in town!!!!!! Anyway, like I said, I liked it. Good jukebox. Also, I didn't realize that was the bad part of town - the bad part looks different in the US.
Any chance of doing some towns in Northumberland?
Hi Eddy
Things I remember with affection about Gateshead high street from when I was a young lad.
Shepards of Gateshead at Christmas and the ride to Santa's grotto.
The Odeon Cinema where I saw such classics as Where Eagles Dare and Dads Army.
and Jackson the taylor where my dad got his made to measure suits.
I currently live in Dubai and look forward to your videos so keep up the good work👍
Thanks for sharing James 👊🏻👍🏻
You can report the 'security guy' so I'm glad you didn't get caught up in it! But you touched on it! Lack of Investment for everything there top to bottom. Still beautiful but 'it' could be so much better!
I had the same problem like why there isn't any notices saying no photos are video. Apparently private land. Go up the other side where metropole is towards the blue bell pub is interesting. Its the decline its everywhere.
Excellent video. Well done!
I remember going to Gateshead high street as a kid with me mam & dad. It was thriving back then in the 70’s. Remember Laws for sasperilla, what a drink!
