There are lots of prerequisites in Civ II that come in illogical orders. You can also build the Eiffel Tower before you research Iron Working. You can build banks, factories, and railroads, without ever having discovered mathematics. You can build freight trucks and mechanised infantry before inventing the automobile.
Did you know: That starship built by one of the civilizations is actually the same starship that landed on planet Chiron in the game "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri" (a strategy game based on Civilization 2 but more complex and set into the future about 40 years during voyage after this game), which makes me believe that that is a sequel to this game... kinda? Those civilizations in the game that landed on the planet cololonized it and became factions.
9:56 LOL that you can research Genetic Engineering at the same time as Gunpowder, Chemistry and Magnetism. In what universe does such a scenario begin to make sense?
Played this game as a kid... didn't realise until now some 30 Years later that you are could send people into space. LOL. I always thought the objective was to wipe everyone else out.
Thank you. You just launched me down a new rabbit hole. Test of Time is so obscure and forgotten among Civ fans who weren't around when it originally came out. @@nathangamble125
@Multi-florum would agree, the way to do that is Chieftan, three civs, tiny map, huge land mass, continents, warmest temp, then all-out conquest, and don't bother founding any cities, and get lucky with a few huts (get chariots right away) and river tiles + start with 2 settlers.
Playing it on lowest difficulty for faster acceleration. It's also faster in real time (as opposed to game turns) because we're not exploring or moving units.
@@multi-florum my mind was blown in jr high when I realized you could use the caravans to build wonders. Too bad they took that feature out in civ 3. It’s impossible to stay ahead of the computer past monarch level
I tested with one through eight cities and four cities was fastest for me. when i play for high score i kill all the ai civs the same turn i max out the cities so they can't build new cities when they respawn. in terms of minimum turns taken exploration and expansion are key, but i've found that in RTA the more units you have to move and cities you have to manage the more time each turn takes. i'm waiting for someone to beat my times and give me an excuse to improve, though. ;)
@@multi-florum More cities and continual expansion is how you would max score, but max rt speed is either going to be 4 or 5 cities based on tile layout (so they can be 2 tiles away from SSC without overlapping). You maxed out all the luck conditions, so my only guess as to speeding things up in this _specific playthrough_ would have been: 1. Build Rome AFTER checking out the hut because of a 1/zillion chance of getting a third settler without any upkeep/food cost. Otherwise costs you nothing in time. 2. Road the silk tile super early? Gets a continuous extra unit of trade from very early on when that unit of trade in early game could really matter. 3. Get extremely lucky and know that the other hut was like 4 tiles from Antium, send a settler to get that tile quickly and get lucky as hell with that tile (another free settler?). 4. Explore out around Antium by 1 extra tile to reveal the whale for Cumae. 5. Earlier Democracy? Not sure how much of an effect that would have and no idea how the risk vs. reward calculation would work out, but there's that. 6. *This one I'm pretty sure about.* You're on Chieftain mode and you're island-ed with only two opponents (and no GD Mongols). Instead of building the ironclads, build diplomats. No unit cost, and no heralds means no clicking through the heralds for "[city] builds Diplomat". Then just rely on AI being too dumb on Chieftain mode to attack you so long as your cities are flagged.
Loved this game. Definitely my childhood right here.
That is very impressive, never knew one could exploit the shakespear theater like that. Love how it is very fitting with all roads leading o Rome.
Let’s build Ironclads. Now what do we need to research... Ah, Iron working. Heheheh 😉

So this is what really happened to the Romans...
...or an alternate world where instead of focusing on conquest the romans concentrated on travelling to the stars. A world much more peaceful?
I like being lazy, I mean peaceful times

I maybe biased but this was the best civ gane
Same
It had its flaws with spamming settlers being op. But i loved the replayability, trying different ways to win.
Crazy that the Babylonians are just discovering pottery, when you are already at explosives.
I forgot just how broken the caravans could be in this game lol
How? Sirry i didn't catch it
You wore like a minimalist on an island, beaten by fellow barbarians in a hut. GG.

He literally made Iron clads before he even researched Iron working, Civ 2 is just pure chaos.
@@vietta6424 Maybe he made them out of bronze? Bronze Clads. LMAO.
I still love the graphics of this game!! :D

Same here. At that time, I did not even speak English. I had no idea that you there were other victories besides domination...
In the "Test of Time" expansion you can even build cities on the planet you arrive at and fight against the aliens that live there.

Very sad that you don't play with sound effects :(
Yeah, sorry, the sound effects slow down the game a little bit. :(
@@multi-florum Maybe you should speedrun "civ2 with sounds" category as well?
Could you always plant forests with settlers in the early game? I thought that was a terraforming engineer skill only?
Settlers can build forests on grassland and plains with "m". Terraforming that terrain gives you hills.
Is it possible to make a game time speed run. That is. Finish it as early as possible in year.. say 500BC

Nah! Elon Musk's strategy would be, let everyone else do the hard work and set everything up, and then he'll come in, buy it, and take all the credit.
