    I do think, relating to the command system, that some basic "sit with the pups", "follow me", and a "go hunt" emote/call could be useful when trying to manage larger packs for Episode 3 or even Episode 2 to some degree. Plus, the wolves would still get to do their own thing, they'd just be confined to a specific task, so skittish wolves hunting could still be a bit less likely to get in trouble while hunting but bolder wolves could try to nip a bear. Assuming affinity is high and they actually listen haha. Another reason to interact with your packmates at least.
    Unless there was another system you all had in mind that I haven't heard about yet, in which case I'm curious.

    • @mortober
      @mortober 3 роки тому +20

      For "follow me" and "stay with the pups," those are already in game. Not sure if it was just my mate or not but whenever I left the den, they'd always follow along unless I did the bark which tells them to go home and that kept the pups safe. I would really appreciate a "go hunt" command though because my mate is sometimes starving while with the pups and I'm full but I have no way to tell them to get some food for themselves.

      I don’t think the “go hunt” command would be necessary if the devs improve the mate’s AI and makes them more likely to hunt across the board-especially when they get hungry. They should also hunt hares by themselves. I’ve never seen them do that.

    • @guncat2962

    I have an Idea. So as for telling your mate to do something, like go mark or hunt. Perhaps, you should have the option to tell them, but depending on their personality, how they are feeling that day, etc. will determine whether they do it or not. Maybe if you bug them enough they will do it, but the pack affinity will go down as they get mad at you for being annoying or something like that. So this way, you don't control them per say as they still can refuse, but the emote option will be there to clearly let them know "Hey, I'm going to defend pups, can you go hunt for a bit?", and at the same time, you wont control them, they can still choose. I think that might work, get the best of both worlds.

I always pick bold mates in AM, wolves that will help me when hunting bull elk or moose, or when fighting stranger wolves. And yet.. multiple times in SC with the same wolf that helped me with hunting and fighting in AM consistently, I will get into a fight with stranger wolves and they just stood there snarling and doing submissive tail emotes while quite literally watching me die, or letting themselves be attacked without ever attacking back or trying to defend themselves in any way. She never came hunting with me unless I double howled like five times, and when it was time to change dens, she never even bothered to carry one of the pups who kept getting left behind. In fact, she did whatever she could to keep as much distance from me & the pups as possible. It was like she just didn’t care for them. I think letting us see the personalities would be a good idea. Literaly all the pups act the same. Ive watched all my pups from 4 different litters now act the same way. I think the most different was one pup chased another and they fell, that was.. the most special thing I've seen them do

    About that tree thing, it’s details like that I’ve seen a lot of games struggle with, especially when it’s for a creature/creatures you wouldn’t often interact with in that environment.
    I’m unsure how your system works, but I know that one of the popular Dino sims found a work around this for their certain species. If you can make a few different trees their separate intractable entity, you could place them around the map and have AI near them to interact with the entity. The reverse of the issue being that instead of having the tree system account for interactable trees, it would be making the AI think about how to interact with the tree.
    Personally for something as small as black bears climbing, I wouldn’t (personally) bother until late game as a quality of life update if at all, but I figured to throw out this suggestion anyway since it does apply to non-tree related things.

    I genuinely have no idea what the personalities of most of my pups are, and only figured out how mate personalities work on my fifth playthrough, with help from the wiki. Maybe I'm just super unobservant, but the only difference I've ever been able to see is that some tend to wander more than the others, and I had one that liked to sleep next to my mate, away from me and the other pups.
    I get your reasons for not letting us see their personalities, but I would at least like some sort of resource that could guide me and point out the different behaviors, I searched the wiki for this and could only find it in regards to mate behaviors, I have yet to find anyone explaining the pup behaviors.

    Since this is an older video I can see this getting buried, but what if, since we can't raid dens, there's a chance younger pups/other pack members do on occasion? I noticed my den tends to get raided by 1 year old wolves more often than any other, and I very rarely get the pack leader raiding my den unless they're the only wolf from that pack that I've met. I think it would be cool if, on random chance, sometimes the younger, more ambitious and less wise pups go try to raid other wolves dens, with varying results, maybe they get a pup, or maybe they get a minor or even a major injury, or maybe they even die while gone

    You're doing such a good job, Wolfquest Team!! This game is so fun and exciting and you keep on making it better. I think right now I'm really hoping for an update with fish, since in some areas, especially in British Columbia, wolves sometimes hunt salmon. I was thinking less of a source of food, though, and maybe more as an aesthetic thing - seeing eagles hunt them (like you do a little bit in Amethyst Mountain), maybe seeing them wiggle around under the water when you put on headcam when you swim... right now the headcam while swimming just shows the bank texture lol! It would just be really fun to see certain fish, I guess. I study marine biology a lot, and there are some neat fishies in Yellowstone.
    If you've checked out Voyageurs Wolf Project, you've probably read the articles on how wolves hunt beavers. It'd be neat if there was a special way to hunt them, like with tutorials and stuff, on ambushing them the way those articles and studies describe. No pressure of course, just so long as we get some big fat rodents on the menu, I'm happy!
    I guess I'd really enjoy pronghorns and possibly even raccoons being around. Just a neat touch to boost immersion. Other little things I think would be neat is more tree variety (I see a ton of aspens and coniferous trees but not much else, maybe I'm just not recognizing different species), maybe a few more neat coat coat colors, and then animations like shaking water off of your coat after getting out of water, grooming your mate (licking and nuzzling) and playfighting (being able to have a little mock battle with your mate). As for pups, I think it would be kind of awesome if we could groom them and sniff their noses like we do our mates, just for cuteness factor!

    - can generate special markings at the wolves such as white tall tip,a black spot at the neck etc to make the offsprings or NPCs more unique.
    - can raise pups with the previous litters(which you had the family snapshot at the loaf task before) for few more years. Every survived ones will stay in the pack and some may start to leave from 2 years old,which depends on their personality. The upcoming episode Tower Fall will continue your life with pups. What will be in the new episode?
      In the first weeks of June, the pups frolic at the rendezvous site in Slough Creek while their parents bring them their first meals of fresh elk meat. When the elk herds move down into the Lamar Valley, the pack follows - only to find other packs have already established territories in the valley. So they journey further south, up and over Specimen Ridge, then down into the valley of the Yellowstone River. There, on the banks of the Yellowstone, with Tower Fall thundering nearby, the pack makes a new home amidst fellow predators and plentiful prey. Here the pack will stake out a new territory, protect their family from danger, and and raise a new generation of skilled hunters.
      The Tower Fall expansion will be an in-game purchase (DLC) and released after WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition.

    I will have to say that observing the pups' behavior is near impossible (at least for me), unless you're recording your playthrough and then viewing it again (which is kind of tedious), because you are supposed to be alert at all times, watching for predators, watching your territory, managing everyone's hunger (even mate's hunger, because if you happen to choose a lazy mate they'll rather starve than go on a hunt). Realistically, there is no time to sit back and watch your pups play! And very hard to remember which one did what even if you do end up noticing something, because 5-7 pups is A LOT... Take a look at "Seri! The pixel biologist" channel. She can't remember how her first pups died half the time and she mixes up the strengths and weaknesses of her adult wolves all the time and I do not blame her at all! It's a lot of information to remember and managing so many wolves can be a handful. If you take the task of raising pups seriously, if you want them all to survive it is rather stressful and if you spend time watching them playing instead they usually end up dying.
    And don't get me wrong, I understand where you're coming from! It is realistic to not know for sure, it can be fun to make your own conclusions and Tower Fall might help with getting to know your litter even better... But it is a game. In games we love to see the stats and menus exactly because it is helpful and informative and doesn't leave us blindly guessing.
    I'm trying to understand and respect your decisions, but as a gamer I can't help, but remain a little peeved.
    But this silly pet peeve aside this game is truly great and I appreciate your efforts immensely!

    • @WolfQuestGame
      @WolfQuestGame  3 роки тому

      You don't *have* to "know" your pups as gameplay. The most important part of raising them is feeding them and keeping them safe. The purpose of the behind the scenes personality system is to add variety and interest to enhance the player experiences roleplaying/storytelling and add to re-play value. Just remember, the most important factor in interpreting pup personalities is your own experiences and perceptions. And, if you choose to later play a pup as an adult, you can have them behave however you like.

    • @hamtastham8831
      @hamtastham8831 3 роки тому +2

      @@WolfQuestGame with all due respect, the personality system does not add much re-play value. as the other person said, it's nearly impossible to get a grasp on your pups' personalities. you're practically playing with the same set of pups, with the same unclear personalities, each playthrough. why do i care about a personality system that i can't even observe working in-game?
      i understand you want the game to be realistic, but *your players are not wolves.* your players will need assistance. we will not be tuned-in to the game environment as well as a real wolf will be tuned-in to ITS environment.
      and again, with all due respect, if i don't *have* to understand my pups' personalities, why did you add it? when you phrase it that way, it sounds like a useless throwaway feature. does your work not deserve more respect than that?
      comments i've seen regarding personality are mostly disagreeing with your decision-- you are not making players happy.

      @Greyshi 3 роки тому +1

      @@hamtastham8831 Well, thank you for chiming in, but I will have to disagree that all pups are the same. Some will stray further away from the den than the others either to explore or spend some time alone, buuut that's about all the difference I've noticed between 3-4 litters... And then again, usually, it's the entire litter that tends to be all bold or all lazy, taking after the parent that has one of these strong traits. Maybe it's just my luck, but it's hard to find them memorable. Puppies aren't memorable until they grow up (or die) and I straight up *forget* what they were like after I've raised them (I know, for shame). That's why I'd love to see more background info about them, but if the devs don't want to show that info, well... It's their game and they are free to do what they want with it.

      @@Greyshi sure, it's their game, but it doesn't take more than 2 minutes of scrolling through the comments to see the developers are failing the players in this decision. the decision to add personalities to wolf biographies *wouldn't even affect the gameplay itself.* usually i agree with the devs' decisions, but it's clear they're just being stubborn this time around. the personality system in its current form is NOT interesting enough to add re-play value as they claim.

      Glad to have found a more in-depth discussion on this. My own thoughts are a bit mixed and muddled, so I will address both arguments.
      *Personally, when I play, even when I have the time to sit at the den and watch the pups in pupcam, I don't remember anything about them but the color of their pelt. I'm watching them, but not really observing them- which, may simply be because I'm more focused on playing the game and reaching the end. I feel that this is at least partially because you have no real motive to be observing your pup's the way you do your mate. Your mate, you pay closer attention to during courting to see what their personalities may be, because their personality matters.
      I think this is what wolfquest means by "you don't need to know the personality of your pup's". Because there's quite literally nothing to know about your pup, they act how you act as adults. As was mentioned, it has no effect on gameplay, unlike mate personalities that dictate the survival of your pups.
      *However, I understand and share many of the frustrations of wanting to know what personalities the pups had if you don't know or can't remember, if only simply because they exist. After all, it does seem counterintuitive to give the pups certain behaviors, only for those behaviors to be forgettable due to it's lack of purpose and clarification. Part of me feels that having the sliders or even a pre-generated description of your pup's personalities as adults would in itself give the pup personalities more purpose. Even if you plan on acting outside of the pup's personality, you know more about your pup and if/how they are unique from their siblings, or your other litters. This is especially interesting for me in seeing how much the genetics of your wolf and your mate affect their pups, and allows litters to be more memorable, since you have more information about them.
      It is argued that you get this information about them in the game. But with respect, I simply do not think this is the case. As already stated here and in other comments, it is difficult to identify pup personalities yourself. As I mentioned, for many this is probably because they are not actively thinking about their pup's personality, they are thinking about the game. And for many others it is just difficult to remember the personalities of your pups after the litter is over, especially with larger numbers of pups.

    You guys are doing such an amazing job!
    But I was wondering how the controls would look like for mobile? I mean like how would we tell our mater to do things? And will the rest of the controls stay the same?
    Love the game and watching seri playing!
    You guys are amazing, and I am always looking forward to seeing the Thursday videos!

    Im curious if your gonna allow us to remember the dens on certain wolves cause I get that wolves that are different won't remember the dens but I would like to know that if you have had a previous litter if you can see the dens next litter too?

      I think it's a neat idea, but would probably be a challenge to implement, plus I'm not sure about realism. Pups only really live in dens for the first few months of life (and as gameplay may have shown you, they often switch dens at least once), and then spend the rest of their life at rendezvous sites. It's reasonable to think that they simply wouldn't be able to remember the location of one of their pup-hood dens. Plus there's the fact that dens sometimes become uninhabitable, so it's entirely possible that through the 2+ year period of them not living there, the den is destroyed.
      Then you have to consider the exploitable factor. This would be very easy to exploit. On your first wolf, you find all the dens. Provided you play wolves only from the family tree, you will always have those dens unlocked. It just doesn't fit with the challenging aspect they're going for.

      I mean... Don't *you* remember these dens? After spending hours in certain areas you're bound to remember at least something!
      So you can easily say that your wolf remembers them too, even if they aren't marked on the map yet.
