  • The lyrics to the song "I Hung My Head" by Sting on his album Mercury Falling.
This is what Sting had to say about the song in his lyrics' book:
"The song is now confirmed as a bona fide 'country' song, having been covered by the late, great Johnny Cash in the final years of his life. I was so proud to hear my words and music interpreted by the 'master,' although he did replace the last word in the second line of verse two, stream with sheen, for some reason. Whatever, he was probably just reading a misprint, and, even so, it didn't detract one bit from the final result.
"I wrote my version of the song in 9/8; the guitar riff just occurred to me that way and reminded me of the gait of a galloping horse dragging a corpse. The story of a terrible accident, guilt, and redemption materialized out of the title and out of the haunting image of the riderless horse" (Sting 195).

I'd say this version is better musically, but Cash's version brings the lyrics to life making it the better version overall imo

i've never heard a melody like this before. listening to it, it's incredibly unsettling. there's hardly anything to hang onto, it's kinda like a bunch of noise repeated over and over...but it's also incredibly intriguing!

I remember first hearing this when I was six and my brother was five, rich golden summer sunlight on the way to do some fishing with my dad and brother in a big green valley in the Adirondacks. I hung my head, I hung my head, I hung my head we’d sing

While the Cash version is great, I still like the original better, mainly because of the brilliant guitar riff AND, most importantly, it is in 9/8, as opposed to the Cash version which is in 4/4

      ***** 9/8 = 9 eighth notes to a measure. 4/4 = 4 quarter notes to a measure.

AGREED!!! And not only that but the accents in the 9/8 song fall on 3 and 8 which totally changes the concept of a standard 9/8 song! Absolutely brilliant! There's only one Sting!

The source I use to complete all of these lyrics is Lyrics by Sting, by Sting himself. I won't argue with him; what is in the video is also in the book.

I feel that there's just too much action in the song now... I do appologize as I've been listening to the cash version since I was a kid, and never knew it was a sting cover. (Which is awesome by the way! )

It's in 9/8...each new chord lasts 9 beats. The rhythm gives the feeling of alternating bars of 5 and 4 beats. The main drum beat is syncopated, and that's what gave me trouble figuring out the time sig...it occurs on the 3rd and 8th beats of each 9 beat measure.

OK, just to throw a wrench in the works of all this bickering over whether Sting's or Cash's version is best . . . . actually it's neither. Bruce Springsteen's version blows them both away!

Oh, please.. -.-" he missed entirly 9/8 tempo (thing that makes great this song)
I love Bruce's lyrics, but as a musician he's roughly mediocre.. Sting is a genius such as Toto, Esperanza Spalding or Enno Morricone. No compare at all.

The artistic value to this incredible song is the intricate percussion lines. Two different rythyms in competition with each other.
in·tri·cate [ íntrikət ] with many parts artfully combined: containing many details or small parts that are combined in a particularly complex or skillful way; complex and difficult to understand or resolve, through having many interrelated elements, parts, or factors.
Perfect discription of the song. Oh yeah, awesome melody and lyrics =P

I think Cash's people copied the lyrics by listening to the original. Cuz it sounds like he is saying "sheen" and "southlands".

I am neither lying nor do I have a fake source. The book is very real (Google "Lyrics by Sting" and the Amazon link should come up). I checked this morning to make sure that the lyrics are correct, and they are. Maybe you're referring to Johnny Cash's version of the song? The lyrics I am referring to are Sting's.

everyone says that. its because johnny cashs version is in the time signature of 4/4. stings version is in 9/8. way cooler than 4/4 can ever be!! usually i dont give a crap but 9/8 is such an awesome time signature.

Lying ? really the man made a youtube video he himself didnt shoot anyone (that I know of) what possible motivation could he have for lying? ... I've noticed in 45 years that those who jump to callin folks a "Liar" usually do so cause they only deal in lies themselves ... what a punk thing to say , and for that matter .... what in the sam hill is a sheen? did he throw it at Charlie?
