Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

A'reyt Bruce. This was really interesting.
As a Yorkshireman, my county is known for Vikings. Note that as a Yorkshireman I am bound by tradition to mention that I am at every opportunity. I often get the response of "They went viking. Do not call them that!" on my comments, when I mention the subject. I always say that it is our modern word for our ancestors and something like "Hardrada luck". Surely they Canute be serious, these Knut-ers?
I loved holidays to Scotland as a kid, so finding out that Scotland was made from Picts, Scots and Angles coming together to protect themselves from the Vikings and the link to my local history made your history more interesting. Plus, it was even before you "conquered" Doncaster. Mind you, Whitby claims Dracula as well as saying it has better fish and chips than anyone else, even Oban.

My Dad was a Prison Officer at Peterhead, and I grew up there till we moved back to Glasgow at the age of 9. I have fond memories of "days out" to Cruden Bay and swimming in the sea in my knitted woolen burgendy swimming trunks 🤣. Never realised the history that surrounded us at that time, but we loved our time in the North East, so much so that my Dad's last wish was to have his ashes scattered off the harbour wall at Peterhead, even though we were all born in Glasgow. A visit back is long overdue, but with the discovery of the oil I fear so much will have changed.

In his book Anglo Saxons, an excellent book apart from a very sloppy reference to MacBeth, Marc Morris writes about Canute’s foray into England, where of course he eventually became king.
I didn’t know about this battle before your brilliantly told video and like others thought “this’ll be about Largs.” But it could be argued this battle didn’t just assure the continuation of the Kingdom of Scots, but changed the path of English history, notwithstanding there was already a powerful Viking base in the Danelaw.

Thank you Bruce for another fantastic eye opening story! The Viking 'thing' that you addressed at the beginning is the reason why you're a historian and they are history majors! 😃 And it hadn't occurred to me that these people in the 11th century were in fact who you rightly identified them as. I will look at this with new eyes in the future. I am wondering if the bodies were properly removed to make the golf course or left there because the terrain was good and just needed a hair of sculpting. Kind of hoping for them that they were left. I know that some folks will think I'm awful and that a golf course in modern times is a horrible thing to do, but think about it for a moment. The grounds are kept in perpetuity and battles are fought on the links every day, complete with with shouting, cussing, cheers and betting! I'm willing to wager that the dead who have the learned the follies of their ways first-hand are shouting, laughing and wagering right along with this new type of 'warfare'! It's certainly much safer and usually has a brew or two at the end so they're probably applauding them! I've seen my people's graveyards become much worse at home, so I'm glad that something that actually protects this sacred ground will be there, probably forever. Fields would be boring to these men!

What an interesting story! For those complaining about it being a golf course….this area is full of history. I imagine you are constantly walking over historical sites and perhaps not knowing it. That’s just how it is as civilization progresses and land is developed. What about that story of Richard III being found under a car park 20 or so years ago?!

Bruce, my family lived in an old farmhouse near Newburgh when my dad was working in the North Sea in the early 70s (1973-1975).
We got out and about and visited castles and other historical sites while we were there, Cruden Bay and Slain's Castle among them.
I never knew that there'd been a major battle fought against the Vikings there, thanks for the knowledge.
I'd love to take my family over and do a tour of Scotland. In addition to having lived there as a kid, a lot of ky ancestors came from that part of the world.

Great video. Good to hear about lesser known battles from around the country. Never realised the Vikings attacked much on the east coast of Scotland. I suppose the Angles coming from the east into Yorkshire, Northumbria and the Lothians. I used to live in a place named Glendaruel in the cowal peninsula on the west coast. I heard there was a battle involving the Vikings there too. Norse .Not sure how substantial a battle it was though. Be great to get some vids in that area. Great history channel by the way.

Wow finally I see new slains castle featured in one of your videos! Was once belonged to clan Hay. I am a hay 2nd generation American with Scottish roots. Legend has it that the hay’s rose in ranks after a father and two sons named Hay helped the scots defeat the Danes with their ox yoke. “Serva Jugum” is our motto. Still only a legend as their is no proof of this battle but it is known as “the battle of luncarty” it was near perth. give it some research if you would. Loved the video as always Bruce. Slainte mhath!

There is, so far, no agreement as to the origins of the word "viking". Some think it is a noun others have it as verb. Some even have it predating the period when the Norse and Danes raided these islands. But who says it can't be both?

I am a descendant of Mael Coluim (29th Great Grandson) and some of my research has the battle of Croch Dain refers to Cnut who later became King of Norway, Denmark, and England (The North Sea Empire) around 1028. Malcolm ultimately submitted n 1031. Curious if this aligns with your research?
