    Bleach loves its antagonist duos, from Byakuya and Renji to Grimmjow and Ulquiorra and beyond. However, in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Kubo took the duo of Haschwalth and Bazz-B in a different direction, choosing instead to use them to give us a glimpse into the history of his world, as well as exploring their relationship deeper than any before. Let's take a look into their past and what drove them to become enemies.
    [This video is a re-upload, so the first section is out of date now, but the rest should be fine! Thanks guys.]

    Hey guys - this video is a re-upload, so the intro is out of date now and some of you might recognise it! If you haven't seen it, I hope you enjoy it and if you have, you might get something new out of it! It feels like now is a better time to put it live, so thanks for bearing with me.
    My question is what did you think of Jugram and Bazz-B's flashback, and how their characters developed over the course of TYBW? Would you have liked flashbacks for any other Sternritter? Let me know!

    I think you hit the nail on their relationship. Despite being good friends, Haschwalth felt worthless when he was with Bazz due to his warped perception of the world (probably due to his uncle). And Bazz himself thought Haschwalth was worthless compared to him. But then Yhwach comes, completely ignores Bazz but says Haschwalth is the truly special one. At that point you can see Bazz's thoughts from his eyes, he thinks "how can this guy be worth so much more than me?" And Haschwalth noticed it. I think this is the moment their friendship ended.

    I summed up Bazz B's actions in service to Ywach as a sort of Stockholm Syndrome or method acting that's consumed his life, and it's gotten to the point where he can't separate fact from fiction. Especially after he's received so much power (which he has always wanted) from Ywach.

      I think Bazz Bs defense of the Loyd was a means to further his respect for ywach and get him closer to an opportunity to stab ywach in the back.
      And his dialogue regarding retaking his the quincy powers to be general shock in the form of not expecting the outcome and realizing he'd lose the strength to pose a threat to ywach. Maybe even a little bit of denial from playing the role of loyalty so long. Or even honing the acting.

    Haschwalt's arc is a great subversion of the chosen one , Monomyth narrative of how someone can be caught up in the idea of legend and prophecy given his neglect and abandonment issues, you notice with him there was no refusal of the call, which as you pointed is a sign of the toxicity.
    Also as I was thinking, I wonder if Wonderweiss was a kinda of proto Haschwalt in the creative process?
    Meant as a corrupted King Arthur sword in the stone narrative?

    What a great analysis this was. When you think about it, it is these individual story arcs that make Bleach special. Their relationship is so relatable because most of us have been betrayed by someone we shared a bond with. Often times, those so called friends were never really your friends. But there are friendships that end based on poor choices and misunderstandings yet behind all that hurt and anger, those former friends still care for one another.

    I think Haschwalth gets a bad wrap just because his world view runs, pun intended, as the antithesis of the themes of Bleach. It's easy to criticize his concept of what he values in a relationship within the narrative of Bleach simply because it doesn't fit with Kubo's message, but it's impossible to say he's empirically wrong or unjustified in his beliefs. He grew up in an incredibly harsh, unjust world and was shaped by it. He only survived because he learned early on he could only trust people that he was valuable to, ensuring his safety. If you put a character with Ichigo's values through that upbringing, he would've died as a child. And like him or not, Haschwalth is probably the single most loyal and dependable character in the series, with really the only competition coming from Yamamoto's lieutenant

  • @MJ-sg5nn
    @MJ-sg5nn 2 роки тому +20

    I love your character analysis videos and this one really hits the hammer on the nail. The CFYOW novel only reaffirms Jugram Haschwalth as a very conflicted character, ultimately saving the remaining Sternritter and Quincies via his trusted female aide.
    I think Kubo wanted to keep the flashback strictly about Jugram and Bazz's relationship, so he didn't want to avert that attention with the Quincy vs. Shinigami war of 1,000 years ago. But from what little snippet we got of the the Lichtreich hierarchy in Friend 4, it's probably a fair assessment to make that the battle between the two groups was a blowout in the Shinigami Captains' favor. Jugram as the Sternritter Grandmaster was the Sternritter Captain with Hubert as Vice Captain and Bazz-B akin to a new lower-rank seated officer(whose heilig pfeil didn't release the same amount of power as in the present time) gives some allusion to how different the power dynamics were 1,000 years ago. In fact, we know that Yamamoto alone killed Zeidritz, Hubert, and Algora, and defeated Yhwach with his bankai. It makes you wonder what role did Jugram and Bazz played, considering they survived. Also, there probably was a Byakuya/Renji or Ulquiorra/Grimmjow parallel with Jugram and Hubert as well, and it would've been interesting to see how that played out in battle. Also, I wonder if Jugram was influenced by Zeidritz(Yhwach's original aide/advisor) in anyway after 3 years of being Sternritter.

    I think kubo did an amazing job with this character and the antithesis between uryu and himself. The finale of the life of augrham is literally him being the reason why Yhwach is defeated. Without knowing it his death actually completes the plan of basbi which is awesom that when his hand opened and the family crest showed it for shadowed the fact of him during with no regrets that with his death he gave the person who shot the arrow that stole ywach powers and allowed ichigo to win. I think this was his plan all along to do this. He had the powers of the "almighty" and showed ywach his death so it would make sense he foresaw his own death and that he would kill basbi. I believe that he never forgot basbi and that he knew that by killing his friend it would mean he would die the way that he wanted him too. He wouldn't die by a shinigami or by ywach it was by his own hand and that it would bring basbi closure to know that he gave it his all and that his friend was not the weak one and would satisfy the curious thoughts but also would allow basbi to be acknowledged by his friend one final time.
    This would allow haswhalt to then test uryu and make sure his resolve was there. Hashwalt was plagued by his guilt but with the power of the almighty I believe he was able to look into the sands and find the only options that was available to end the chapter of his friend and himself, to bring down ywach, and to make sure that all was laid to rest. It strikingly almost resembles the character of gin. Hashwalt really cared for his friend and while I think he was internally conflicted I believe that he ultimately chose to accomplish the plan of basbi due to him seeing the future with the almighty. I think kubo gives a layer of depth to this guy that is really fantastic and while I think he is designed to look conflicted I do believe that this was really something that kubo never strayed from in his writing of this character that his choice originally haunted him but he found a way by completing the plan of basbi, to get close to ywach, and then found a way to destroy him by realize it was not them who were meant to do it so. It prevented babsbi from being uterly humiliated by ywach, but also allowed them to both die together. Hence why the last shot is the family crest, it was written , I believe, to
    Show that Hashwalt never forgot his friend.

    Among the many things I’m salty about when it comes to this arc (No Ryuken/Ishin, Zero squad embarrassment, No thousand-year ago flaskback, etc,etc.. ).
    The relationship of Juugo and Baz not having enough time is probably one of the most painful things about this arc.
    Baz’s last thoughts and words to Juugo have stuck with me, and they will probably continue to for a long time to come.

    In terms of conveying emotions, there are a few characters in animanga that conveyed their emotions the way Haschwalth conveyed his loneliness. The only moments that come to mind would be Luffy’s pain post-marineforde and Gon’s rage post Kite

    I really do hope they flesh out the quincies in the new anime. One of the most important things that was missed in the manga was their backstory on how they were able to survive the quincy massacre and managed to build their army again and remain hidden for a very long time.

    Your well elaborated thoughts really helped me appreciate Haschwalth, that I had considered a bland hunk of wood before. I think your line about him regretting his previous actions, but being too deep in the Sternritter business to turn back was especially emotionally resonant to me.

  • @3slicessenpai
    @3slicessenpai 2 роки тому +4

    The "Friend" flashback is really confusing, timeline-wise to me. Like you said, there's a clash between medieval cities/castles and modern clothes. When reading this portion, I actually thought this had taken place about a dozen years ago, but Yhwach's fallen Stern Ritters *are* there, like you said, so it *should* take place a thousand years ago. But how does that work in the logistics of the Stern Ritters existing? As Nodt clearly was picked up in the modern world, but Bazz B and Jugram are from the Crusades?? Yhwach I understand the longevity because he's a god, but are you telling me Bazz B and Jugram are also hundreds of years old? It's not even specified if the Quincies attack the Soul Society as fully fledged ghosts or that they went through the reishi conversion gate Urahara set up in the Soul Society arc for Chad, Orihime and Ishida.
    There's so many little questions Kubo couldn't answer us.

  • @TheDonovanMcCormick
    @TheDonovanMcCormick 2 роки тому

    I think in soul society arc it’s Byakuya and Kenpachi, not Renji. Renji is just conflicted and does what he thinks is right, which coincidentally goes against soul society at that time, he’s loyal to them all the rest of the time. He doesn’t rebel like Kenpachi does because that is Kenpachi’s personality, he doesn’t care about anyone but himself similar to Grimmjow. Byakuya and Kenpachi have that abrasive relationship the entire manga. They are total opposites. Wish we got more of Bazz and Haschwalth, and other sternritters like Askin. Who knows, maybe we’ll get more in the anime from Kubo. Great video as always. You’ll be at 100k in no time. Best Bleach content by far.

    Can I ask, since the one jump says in one panel with rukia saying to mayuri that mayuri is kind of has a battle with URAHARA with developing things and also says that URAHARA sells a lot of things from his shop. Does this means that it is confirmed that kisuke was still alive??

    As soon as we start thinking of Bleach pasts, it becomes increasingly difficult to remember this is a world where the living die and gain super powers, or die and eat each other until they gain greater super powers. It's wild to remember every arrancar we see is a cluster of dead humans to say the least.

    they were each other's only friends T_T they had different upbringings and personalities and young Bazz B had an ego because of his status but he also was kind and tried to help Jurgen when they were kids. Bazz B's ego was hurt when Yhwach chose Yurgen which put a strain on their friendship as Jurgen thought Bazz B resented him for that and Bazz B thought Jurgen left him behind but they still cared about each other.
    Bazz B matured and was ready to follow Jurgen as a leader, he got upset for his sake when Yhwach announced Uryu as a successor as he only saw Jurgen as deserving, he still called him Jugo until the end and eventually was ready to accept defeat by his hands. Jurgen always stopped Bazz B's fights to protect him from getting killed by Yhwach who hated inner conflicts, he kept Bazz B's family's symbol on his sword, he was struggling to choose loyalty over friendship and maybe regretted it in the end (based on his last convo with Uryu).
    i think Kubo did a good job writing their complicated relationship and backstory, very tragic too. they never got to resolve their miscommunication and talk everything out. i hope anime will do justice to their story and maybe Kubo even added something more to it.

    With the Hell Arc being a possibility, I truly hope they are able to do multiple seasons again when I thought TYBW arc would be it I was looking forward to an almost farewell tour much like The Lost Agent arc felt like now I hope for two or three more years of material and the reviews and expanding of this all time great universe which outside of Naruto I’ve felt is the most developed and intriguing though I know SAO and DBZ etc fans will disagree with. It’s just fun seeing a new generation learn what a great piece of art BLEACH was is and in the future hopefully will be.

    I love bleach and at times Kubo is an absolute genius but one thing that always irks me is that he cannot write a villain with much depth.Yhwach is kinda dull and honestly, so is Aizen. “Why?” “How?” “What?!?” You may ask. Well, the fact that they’re so distant from their underlings and you never see them extremely passionate or happy about their goals and ambitions. It’s always more compelling when SOME of the villains goals seem understandable or reasonable…it’s a way to relate to them, thus forcing us to be emotionally connected. Just imagine Yhwach actually caring for his Quincy underlings and was seen as a hero in the flashback. Imagine if it was indeed soul society that felt the Quincy were throwing off the balance of worlds by the way in which they used reishi…I’m pretty sure this was the justification that Kubo wrote when we first learned about the Quincy…💁🏾‍♂️ oh well, the Arc still slaps. Lol

    Quick question, and i know i need to read the manga lol. I thought quincies could manipulate the reishi around them to form constructs, how can the sternritter do things like make lightning, fire, people explode, and making zombies?

    • @hz.kemalpasa2997
      @hz.kemalpasa2997 2 роки тому +1

      Sternritter have letters carved into their souls by Yhwacht. It's like Aizen giving Espada their Ressurection powers. So every single Sternritter has a unique ability like an Arrancar or Shinigami.
