He is called an interpreter but yeah they are supposed to talk emotionally etc just like the emotion the person is putting in when signing. Jack is really great and I love his relationship with Marlee. ~:~
I'm the sister of someone who is deaf, she has been deaf since she was 18 months old, I learned to sign before I could talk due to it. My mother picked my name because she was watching Children of a lesser god while waiting to deliver. I am proud to have my name, it symbolizes great strength. I too was a victim from the time i was 12 to a few months after my 19th birthday. I never told anyone for 7yrs. It's not easy, But once you get that first dropping of the bomb out, it gets easier. Anyone who is struggling with any form of abuse should know, it's not just tall tales, people are there for you to reach out to, you just need to take that first step to taking your own personal power back. I look up to Marlee Matlin a lot, she is a very strong woman, and if I one day end up with the acting career i've dreamed about, I hope i can work with her.
I´m so sorry for everything she´s gone through. Two molestations and an abusive relationship and drug rehab is more than one person should have to carry. She´s so strong though. She´s a great inspiration for no matter the hearing OR the deaf. Marlee is just incredible!
It makes me so upset that this lady had the audacity to call Marlee handicapped. She could do more than that lady ever could, she's won awards, she was on Dancing with the Stars, and all that lady ever does is sit there and make biased judgements about people.. The only thing that makes her different is that she can't hear and that hasn't held her back from making amazing accomplishments
Yeah, the anchorwoman is soo inconsiderate and embarrassing. She doesn't even leave Marlee enough time to answer her questions. She constantly cuts her off. What a mess.
Jack's a very good interpreter. At least from my perspective as a hearing person. He's very expressive and accurate. With someone like him as an interpreter for a deaf person, I'd feel like I'm talking to a hearing person.
what the hell?! that interviewer needs to be punished for what she has done to Marlee. Seriously, have some respect for god's sake! I truly admire Marlee, she has proven to be a wonderful person and she's also an excellent actress.
My gosh Joy is such an awkward interviewer...she goes from asking about Marlee's molestation, an incredibly emotional topic, to asking about her 'phenomenal' sex life...someone needs to be schooled on sensitivity...
I am so impressed with this womam! Her disabilities did not stopped her from continuing to be a symbol of inspiration for all of us. She just proved us all that no matter what struggles you have in life, it should not be your point of breaking down and giving up but instead look up to it as your source of strength to beat all odds. I feel motivated knowing the story of this extra ordinary person, Ms. Marlee Matlin. Isextraordinary Information with Inspiration
Wow this is heartbreaking 💔 I had no idea that the character she played in Children of a Lessor God was similar to her own life experiences. It sad to think that she had these tragic circumstances to pull from for that role. She’s such an amazing woman.
BestPiggy yes they are best friends and they are also business partners and yes he's her professional interpreter he goes everywhere she goes it's great to see the relationship
Is it just me or did it seem like Joy Behar was talking down to Marlee? Always calling her a "good girl, a very nice girl" She's a woman for crying out loud! And has probably experienced more hardships (and overcome them) than Behar ever has. (The interpreter was great, too!)
Really? It’s one thing to notice the struggles of someone you’ve never met, it’s a whole different thing to speculate on the lack of struggles in another. Quit being ridiculous. Quit judging everyone out loud. We get it you don’t like Joy because of what you saw here or possibly other segments. You don’t have to attack her personally.
I've been a great fan of Marlee for a long time since I first watched the movie in "Children of the Lesser God" and I was inspired by seeing her in the movie. She's really a great actress and she's the role that I've been looking up to even improve myself with my own identify including my deafness and etc. Now, she have the courage to face her dark secret, and to overcome it. It surely will help thousands of deaf and hard of hearing victims! I love you, Marlee! :)
You do know what the word disability means? If you're otherwise unable to do something without the assistance of prosthetics and/ or rely on technology to function like a normal person then you are in fact handicapped. Let's not confuses the definition with a load of bs sentiment.
Deaf people however constitute a linguistic and cultural minority and doesn’t see themselves as disabled. The disability only occurs when not getting access to an interpreter in the hearing world. Otherwise they are disabled in the deaf community. They can do anything that hearing persons can except of hearing.
Marlee. I consider myself to be one of your biggest fans. You are such a great person and a really great actress. I wish you nothing but the best for you and your husband for the rest of your lives. Good luck with everything.
@@ruthr4712 wasn't really implying that they were friends before he became her interpreter but that they are good personal friends and he is her personal interpreter (as opposed to just a one time hired interpreter).
Why does her interpreter always embellish what she says? It's annoying. At 3:15 he says, "But, I don't know the statistics." All she signs is "but" and shakes her head. Even interpreting the non-verbal cues, the most he should interpret is "but, I don't know." Throwing in words like "statistics" when she said nothing of the sort is speaking for her, not interpreting what she says.
I agree with Lilia; I think they've been working together for so long that they've built up a sort of repertoire and understanding. For instance, around 2:00, she signs, "I knew it was wrong," and Jack says that. When she nods, he repeats the sentence, even though she didn't sign it again. There are probably some body language cues and quirks in her language that he's gotten used to translating, and it seems like she's fine with it.
He's not just translating her ASL but interpreting what she's trying to convey. That and he knows her well enough to understand the undertone and nuances to what she's saying. He does a great job. Don't forget she reads lips. She knows what he's sayings as he interprets her words. As rare as it may be she has corrected him when he has misinterpreted or stumbled over something she was trying to say. They are an amazing team.
She signed mom and dad so her interpreter just said parents. ASL to English is not a direct word for word translation as ASL is its own complete language so things change a little in the process.
this woman is a symbol, a example to be followed by everyone, i mean she went through all that crap, the drugs and the abuse, and she let none of that to grind her down, she remained this sweet beautiful, and kindest of women that we all know and love today, MARLEE YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!
@TheAustenLady You know this was one of the first videos I saw of Marlee and now that I have seen almost every Marlee video on UA-cam I see what you mean. I saw videos from waaaaay back and he was her interpreter. He is essentially very good! This particular video he did a lot of adding which bothered me at first... Thanks for the reply :)
She is for every deaf out here..i'm myself from québec canada....I speak LSQ... but lot's of us are mixed togheter some time a years.. you do know all what i'm talking about
i another interview (and in the book) marlee said that she knew that what had happen was fawl and wrong, but she didn't told to her parents, because her father would had found the babysitter and the schoolteacher and he would have killed them both, and she did't wanted her father to end up in jail, she wanted him to stay with her, that is why she never said anything to them, she knew that what happened whas not right, but she kept it all inside
Reading her book and reading about her life has only made me love her more! She is such a strong, courageous woman for sharing these details of her life and she has helped me overcome struggles of my own. Thank you Marlee! And also I find this interview hilarious just in the sense that Marlee looks like she wants to punch Joy in the face! Funny, the interviewer is afraid to insult Marlee by calling her deaf- which she is, and then, 2 sentences later, she calls her handicapped.. I don't really like her. Not becaus of how she interacts with a deaf person, but because of her way of communicating in general. She is very insensitive and does not really seem to listen. @Boyonspace Actually, a LOT I'd say the majority of hearing people are afraid to say the word "Deaf". Everytime I tell someone I'm deaf and we get to talking. They'll come back and ask "So, when did you become 'hearing impaired' or 'having hearing problems' or 'lose the ability to hear' etc...". Deaf is so hard for hearing people to say at times. So Joy Behar was right for asking so that the public new the "politically correct" term. It was smart of her to ask so she didn't say the wrong thing.
She asks her for details of sex, exactly which drugs she did, her abuse, her being taken advantage of, called her handicap, talked to her interpreter and not her, should I go on?
THANK YOU! Some one who gets it! normal is just hwat people use to desvribe the majority of people....i am sure people would be trying to fix hearing people if the majority were Hard Of Hearing! etc... i guess it is hard to understand unles you live with it or have experienced it through others..
I can't remember a time or an instance when I wasn't completely impressed by Marlee. I am wowed by her each time I see her.
What was this?? "Let's pick out every horrible, traumatic thing in Marlee's book and grill her on that!"?? Is this how you interview someone?
I love how the translater was saying it how should would say it and she is an amazing actress

There was no abusive relationship.

+WizardFreak478 what. of course it is a handicap. try living deaf for 5 minutes. you are literally handicapped, everything changes.
only a handicap if you make it one!

Would you folks kindly subtitle/caption this?
The translator's a fucking boss.
She's a good actor and a beautiful women I love her show and movie thanks marlin
I wish she could hear & wish her happiness.
I was so excited to see Marlee on Larry King...then when I read "Joy Behar interviews..." I just sighed. "Maybe I can just ignore her input."
It must be hard for the translator to relay these kind of things, not just due to the content, but also for having to give what she is saying justice.
Wow! She is so pretty!
it's because of people like Marlee Matlin that make me proud that I'm going to finally learn sign language in college this fall :D

The book is about her life and experience. It's autobiographical.
So...where are the subtitles?
@PersonOfBook he wasn't really signing and speaking at the same time. ASL has its own grammar. Its impossible to think in two grammars at once
I can't believe she described being Deaf as a handicap! I'm not even Deaf and I can see that's wrong!
Joy has no sensitivity in asking h her questions
I have a lot of respect for Marlee and what she's overcome, but I have to wonder...where were her parents? Does she talk about them in the book (haven't checked it out yet).
