Aah, I've been drawing mountains like this for quite a while, but there's a couple of details and differences that make yours look a lot better. Very cool.
This is awesome and very helpful. I have a world map I've been working on for several years. I keep redrawing and resizing it. but my mountains always looked like giant triangles. this technique is way better. Thanks so much. on to forests. :)
Ben, really enjoy the quest atlas series you have going! I've noticed that a lot of fantasy maps typically draw mountains in that jagged style which mimic the high, rugged ranges like the Rockies very well. However, I feel like this style does not suit a range like the Appalachians which is much lower in elevation over the majority of the range, and generally not rugged but more rounded (at least where I live). If you look at any topo map you still have the long unbroken ridges (ex. through VA, MD, PA). Have you seen any good way to draw or indicate a "lower" mountain range? I've made several attempts but have not been too happy with any of them because they are too easily confused with hills.
Excellent tutorial. I now realize my mountain ridges had too much zigzag, Also while drawing the sides I can go more downward than I generally was. I'm also noticing your drawing allot bigger than I was which might help.
Really great! Works very well to represent the terrain, but as you said in your previous video, is not "realistic" in that a single ridge of mountains makes up a true mountain range. I wonder if adding too many ridges close together will look too busy and confusing.... You've given me some experimentation to do!
Can you have shading if your final map is going to be drawn with pen? It makes the map look SO good, and I would love to have it on the final version of my map.
+Jesper Busch agreed.I'm in a campaign that takes place in some badlands nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains. How would you recommend doing that?
Been practicing this technique for an hour or so, and I'm absolutely dreadful at it. Always end up making one alright looking mountain and then everything tumbles downwards.

This is amazing. I SUCK at art, and with your instruction, I was able to replicate this. THANK YOU!
Honestly such a good tuturial my mountain ranges have never looked better! Keep up the awesome work. :)
I'm using this technique from now on! Before I was doing typical triangles, lol. Thanks!
same here, this revolutionizing.
This is it! That is what I was looking for. Thank you so much! Peace!
This is driving me nuts! I', SO stuck on drawing these damn mountains! GRRRRR!
This was super helpful for the RPG book I'm finishing. THANK YOU!!
You, sir, are the Bob Ross of the Pencil.
Please continue. I like your videos.

How would you draw horizontal mountains?
You have to draw a more zigzagged line, almost like a row of pointy teeth and then draw the slopes in the direction that looks best. 🙂

You are AMAZING! Thx for the 10 on my test!
Excellent

In my experience it makes things messy
Thanks! Now my map would look more realistic.
Dang man, why aren't you teaching a class or something?
The spine of the world....
Also, wouldn't mind seeing a how-to for plateaus if you have the time 😅
That said, great vid. I'm new to map drawings & your vids are a great help
How do you go about drawing mountains from east/west perspective?
Working on a map where I want a range running across the northern edge of the nation
Can you have shading if your final map is going to be drawn with pen? It makes the map look SO good, and I would love to have it on the final version of my map.
You can, but it's trickier to get it to look right. Experiment ahead of time.
Have you tried using the iPad for creating artwork ?
what if you were to do it horizontally?
