This historical epic dramatizes the Battle of Peking, a turning point of the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900. When Dowager Empress Tzu-Hsi (Flora Robson) orders the Boxers, a group of Chinese secret societies, to massacre foreigners within China, a group of ambassadors, their families and staff hole up in a diplomatic compound. Major Matt Lewis of the United States Marine Corps (Charlton Heston) leads the defense while romancing Russian baroness Natalie Ivanoff (Ava Gardner).

The Boxer Rebellion is one of the most overlooked and forgotten major events in history. The entire story would make a great TV miniseries.

55 Days at Peking, such a great and underrated movie. Back when all the major powers fought together, side by side. That would be broken just 5 years later in the Russo-Japanese War.

This movie and The Sand Pebbles are the only two movies I know of which address the involvement of the US military in China prior to WW 2.

I saw this movie in Newcastle, Wyoming the night after John F. Kennedy was killed. Great movie, but always associated with that sad day!

@@Great_Sandwich I think my dad wanted to just give us something else to think about. I had a full understanding of this event! I had ardently supported Kennedy’s presidency mainly because of his charisma and my hero worship after hearing the PT 109 story. I was busted up over this!!!
To this day whenever I swim breast stroke I think of Kennedy towing his burned man 3 miles by a life jacket strap!

When he says highly cultured he means that. China during those times did not take kindly to insults or law breaking and would give what we would consider harsh punishments to them. They have numerous societal norms that would put Japan to shame. They nation thrived for a long time and only ended after Western interference which weakened the influnce of the government allowing the revolutionaries to take over.
