My roommate met this stray tortie when he was wheelchairing around the neighborhood a few months ago, and she was SUPER affectionate - came right up to him and eagerly let him pet her. He insisted I go meet her, I easily found her, and she was SUPER affectionate with me, too. She had the ear clip, and the guy who fed the strays on that corner confirmed she was a stray, so we adopted her and... now she couldn't care less about us. She's not mean, she's just a loner. She got what she wanted, so she dropped the act. She tricked us good! And we couldn't be happier to be her suckers!

I was once that person who found torties and brindle dogs to be extremely unattractive. I now have a 12 yr old brindle pittie that has been with me since he was 5 months and a 1.5 year old, huge long haired tortie who has been with me since birth and whose name is Floofy Poops because she's a big huge floof with the ability to poop more than anything I've ever seen and always when I need to utilize/clean any area with a litter box 😂 She's sometimes referred to as Bootz w/the Fur due to her large furry paws and the fact that she likes to place the front right side paw on my thigh to get my attention whenever I have the nerve to forget I'm here to serve her very existence. It truly looks like a rude little kid has put their foot on me while wearing a big fuzzy boot. Anyway, it's crazy to think that the younger me wouldn't have been interested in them at all. When I look at Floofy Poops, she's the most majestic looking sh*tting creature with owl like features I've ever laid my eyes on and my dog is such a handsome old man.

She also best friends with my corgi.

In my comment I said the same thing. I see tortitude as sass, nothing more. My tortie is stretched out on me as I'm typing this. I tell people she's a really sweet, affectionate cat that has her sassy times (usually when it comes to food) and she can be an absolute stone cold weirdo. She's the funniest cat I've ever had. When she gets hyper the way she zooms around and jumps while contorting herself in mid-air always makes me laugh.

Dilute Torties are the best. Though they are most likely inbred because of their coat genes being recessive 🙃 but their coats have their colors because they are actually related to Russian Blues, who have a coat mutation of melanin which causes the bluish gray color which is supposed to be black! That's why the dilute Torties also have a much lighter tan color instead of dark brown, that melanin is also affected by the mutated melanin gene!

I'd argue that the stereotyped "tortitude" is exactly why my family and some of my friends have a preference for them. From 30+ years of tortie ownership, I've found that torties tend to be expressive all the way around, it's not just aggression or having a short fuse. They just seem to be wired to be assertive and very expressive about their feelings. While our current tortie definitely is reactive, she's also exceptionally affectionate, very intelligent, and curious. You know exactly where you stand with her at any given time and she has an extremely vivid personality. Now that she's elderly and rather arthritic, she expresses very well when she's feeling achy and it's a relief to be able to know that so we can try to work with it and help her.

Half orange tabby, half brownie black speckles. If I bent my shoulder to her while she was lounging on the back of the couch, she'd immediately climb on and let me carry her around, purring. She came to us as a rescue kitten with pancreatitis, we nursed her through and she survived. vet said she wouldn’t survive a second or third bout of pancreatitis.
She had a second attack aged 4 i think and got over it quickly
And i thought that was that, last chance. She was close to the vet calling it a day, but it was a miracle.
She was perfectly happy and healthy until it returned aged 12.
She went down hill incredibly fast within two hours and died in my arms on the way to the vet. Very, very sad day
I’ve had six cats in my lifetime and she was the only one with tortitude. Its been two years now and I’ve a new kitten, number 7 Life wasn’t the same without a cat.

I was actually surprised by this. I have never heard this stereotype. We currently own a tortie we rescued; my sister has owned a few - they are not related but all of them are/were extra sweet, petite and so quiet (they don't meow, they just trill). It would make me sad if any rumors would make someone hesitate to adopt one. They all have their own personality!

My tortie is very petite as well. She looks like a 4-6 month old kitten. Maybe smaller. She also does not meow. She makes some very faint noise just like u explained. She is def alert as she seems afraid or ready to go if she thinks someone is coming. We have another orange cat that thinks he rules the house and loves to taunt my little tortie. When that happens, she can scream like something I’ve never heard before. She def is a one person cat and I am her person

After the patient passed, the family asked if I wanted the kitty. So blessed to have known such a sweet kitty. Now she’s in heaven with her original owner. ❤

I was chosen by a Calico & a Tortie as their caregiver. They had very different personalities. The Calico was the smartest, clutziest cat I've ever seen. She was very interested in everything her humans did. Didn't like cuddling, but insisted on being near us.
The Tortie was very affectionate but not as teachable. I think I aged 5 years in her first 9 months with the trouble she got into. She was also a master at pushing things off counters, desks, etc. I miss them both still.

Thank you. We rescued a kitten from the pound back in Nov. I lost my beloved cat of 21 years. Next morning I said to my husband the house was so empty & void. He gently said throw on some clothes and let's go to the pound just to look. No pressure, no expectations. I felt like I was not honoring the memory of my Shadow. Little black cat with big green eyes. Called my support system, including my sons & everyone said do it! They told me I was honoring her memory with all the love I had to give and a beautiful home for another cat. We have had cats our entire lives.(dogs too). Well we went. The last room had a beautiful 4 month old kitten tortoise shell kitten. We immediately bonded. We had to come back 2 days later as she was being spayed the next day. Her"card" said she scared easily. Boy did they get that wrong! She's 9 months old and is turning into a cat. She is so beautiful and loving. My husband never really bonded with cats before, but he loves her as much as I do! Her name is Magic and she is! She brings us so much joy! I love your channel and had to comment on the toirtitude episode. Her markings are black, reddish beige, and beige. Thanks again for your educational, fun shows!

My husband started feeding this stray Tortie that kept coming back with more sweetness. Each time we come home she would greet us with flops & rolls on the ground in front of our feet as we exit car to enter home. About a month later (day after Christmas) we decided to keep & named her Zoey. My son & I gave her flea-bath using harness at a walk-in pet salon then home to meet our other 2 cats- (Daisy & Domino), she was calm & quiet in the cat carrier while my other cats were just curious while I got my room ready for her. Two weeks later trip to vet to be thoroughly checked for the safty of our other 2 cats (which was great no diseases) ...but to our surprise vet said she's pregnant but we thought she was just a kitten (like 6 months old) because she was so petite. Vet feels she's probably about 1 year old but couldn't get a good look at her tongue to tell. Afterwards we slowly introduced our 2 cats to her by having a small one-eyed view opening thru my bedroom door but then the hisses and growls began. Now she was very defensive but I also understand it's because she's pregnant. I got a pet playpen and doggie doo doo pads for her birthing time and she gave birth to 3 beautiful kittens on Jan. 26 exactly 1 month after we took her in our home. She had 2 solid black kittens and 1 tan striped kitten no - Torties. Over time I've been using large moving boxes cut open to use as dividers to keep some exposure & keeping safety in mind not just for the cats but for myself as well. This calms them enough to stop the eye to eye staredown which starts those aggressive hissing growls + I can use the cardboard to maneuver her in the direction I want her to move in. It's slowly getting better but still need more time. They've had a few bad scowel moments but also moments with no incident while eating about 10 feet apart. But the part in this video about the catnip caught my attention...thinking back on those aggressive moments we had with her now I think may be linked to me sprinkling the catnip on her scratchboard and spraying catnip on the toys. But not too sure of the catnip with silvervine rolling wall balls.
Thanks, just learned something new and helpful.

Absolutely true about tortitude. My girl Maya, who owned our pup (think teenage girl with 9 year old brother). Before we got her she had been dumped 5 miles from home during a New England winter. Still she found her way home after two weeks. At which point we we happy to acquire her. Definite Tortitude. At 18 years she lost her vision, but seemed unfazed by her new disability. She found her way up the stairs, to her food and water, and still used her cat box. She eventually passed quietly in her sleep. I hope I have her unflappability to life’s ups and downs when I hit that stage of life. She was a real survivor.

Yeah, when I had a vet freak out about my calico "she's got the orange, too!" (then calling for backup) - I was shocked that she seemed like she was used to calicos being problem patients! She came back with her and was pleasantly surprised that Meren was so easy to work with. So I think tortitude is common in torties/calicos, but not a guaranteed thing. More often than not I see them be sassy (not aggressive - just sassy! Talking back and using inflection to be sure you know they're displeased. Generally like having a naughty little toddler around. Rare that I've seen any cat be aggressive that wasn't afraid/defending itself.), but I don't know where all this 'intolerable' kind of stuff came from!

My calico Lux passed away last year. She was the sweetest, most tolerant cat you could find. She was perfectly social, would always come to say hi to anyone who came over, loved being petted and picked up (even by strangers). She would let me carry her like a baby
Her life story was that she was a stray and brought into the shelter pregnant with her first litter. Several people had tried to adopt her before us, she was 5 when we brought her home. We assume she was brought in due to her teeth problems, the vet removed 6 or 7 molars. Since her teeth were so rotten, it hurt to chew, so she didn’t chew food hardly at all. She also likes to eat fast, the lack of chewing and rapid eating meant she puked up food all the time. Switching to a diet with 1/2 wet food went a long way to fixing that (along with the dental work, of course).
We got a 8 week old puppy when she was about 15. He was always a BIG puppy, he was listed as a German shepherd at the humane society, but we found out later that he’s half Great Pyrenees (via embark). She was amazing with him. She always had enough confidence around him to stare him down when needed, would hiss and swat at his nose with her claws retracted so she could make herself understood without hurting him. She knew to never run, bolting leads to chasing. She was great with our daughter too (our daughter is now 7). By the time she was getting very ill, she had enough trust and love to cuddle with the adult dog. I couldn’t have asked for a better cat.
That’s not to say that she didn’t have attitude. But teaching your cat to feel safe and respected is far more important than anything else. Aggression and antisocial behaviour is often, if not always, fear-based. The best cure for both is confidence building and unconditional affection

"But teaching your cat to feel safe and respected is far more important than anything else" - You said it! I'll never understand people who don't respect consent/wants/needs of an animal/pet just because it's not human. Their feelings are as valid as anyone else's, and they're about on a toddler's intellectual level! It's like being mean to a little kid who can't always understand their world - sometimes all they need is reassurance and to be made to feel heard and respected. Helps a lot with my nervous puker calico, Meren!

The video's title showed up translated into Portuguese as "What is TORTURE" 🙈🙈🙈
I loved the first part, the library and the accent, hope to see it again ❤️
And, btw, there IS some biological reasoning on coat and temperament being related. Early in the embryo development, there are three groups of cells. And one of them develops into skin and brain/neurons and nothing else. The fact that white hairs often come with hearing loss (not only in cats), and other neuronal problems in other species, is probably related to that. But behaviour is not something so black and white as these physical issues and, as Mikel said, there's much more than genetics.
And also I guess there is a taste for every temperament 🧡 ! Some people even like dogs more than cats 🙄🤭

Hi Jackson Galaxy! I just wanted to thank you for your videos on introducing a new cat into the environment. We have a 6 year old cat by the name of Kit Kat! She is quite the diva and was used to having things her way. Things were rocky in the start, but setting up base camp, rubbing both of them in damp towels, and opening up more of the house a little at a time worked wonders! It took us about 6 months, and I will tell you, in the first month we were starting to think they would never get along. The cat we rescued has no teeth and is a black cat, so he in foster care for quite a while (his name is Monty!). They are now great siblings, and are absolutely inseperable! They love to play, and be around each other. It brought a tear to my eye when Kit Kat was crying at the bottom of our stairs, and not even treats could get her to calm down, so I decided to let out Monty (Monty usually sleeps with my Wife. Hes a cuddler!) and she was happy to have him as company! She stopped crying and they even slept next to eachother on the couch. Since then we have made it a regular occurence to let Monty out so they can sleep together. Thank you so much for your dedication to cats and everything you do! You helped give Kit Kat a sibling, someone she can play with and be around (she gets lonely!). You truly are an amazing person!

As the mom to twin torties, Brûlée and Toffee, I truly believe that cats (especially torties) find us when we need them most (even if we don’t know it yet!) ❤ Brûlée’s ‘tude keeps me on my toes while Toffee couldn’t be more snuggly if she tried. I found them living in the bushes as spicy little things when they were about 6 months old and though our first indoor days were trying (Toffee even managed to scale the wall at one point) I can’t imagine our lives without each other. They’ve been there with me through everything and I couldn’t be more grateful to the universe for sending them my way! ❤️🐾

Back in September I found a 5 weeks old stray torbie and brought her home with me. She was full of warms and fleas and was malnourished. AND *I* was in the DEPTHS of my alcohol addiction (drinking about a fifth a day). It took some time but I got sober at the beginning of this year. Now I'm 70 days sober, and she's healthy, spayed, vaccinated, and chipped! We got better together. I don't think I would have been this successful in my recovery if I didn't have my little girl with me

I love these cats. I adopted my first tortie from a neighbour as a kitten because I was worried they'd reject her for being 'ugly'. I had her for 18 years. Had black cat, gingers, and tabbies, among others. I rescued a calico cat that was found injured on the roadside. All my cats were a joy to have in my life.

We just got a tortie about 3 weeks ago and she is the weirdest little creature I think I have ever met. She is the clingiest, LOVES to cuddle, and LOVES people. The only thing she really can't stand is when we leave her alone (usually results into the next cuddle session having her in our faces). Besides that, she is the perfect little cuddle bug and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Tortitude is most definitely a thing! I had a torty cat whenever I was younger, she was extremely shy, kept to herself, and would not like to be around people and would hide a lot. Over the years, I got to help her feel less vulnerable and I became the reason she was more outgoing and less scared of ppl. All cats deserve love even it means they don't know how to show it, they just want to be loved too. All kittys deserve love, because it makes me happy I was able to make her feel better in her later years. Love you Pig ❤️

I love it when you can help them come out of their shell. I had a Burmese runt, and they are small anyway. He was so nervous he acted more like a hamster or guinea pig. He WAS a small animal. I had to get him a guinea pig bed to keep him warm. His bff was a blue cream tortie who misses him badly. By age 5-7, you couldn’t tell that lil boi he wasn’t the biggest cat in the house and he would yell at us and demand food, “NOW!” It made me laugh, how big, bad, tough he was! It’s a gift 🎁 to be able to make a cat comfortable with you!

My calico is just like this! Her confidence has really grown as the years have gone by - I've just found that it's like having an autistic child, in a way! She's easily overstimulated, nervous about very specific things, has safe places she likes to go when she's nervous, and she gets overly excited about things like eating, so lately we're working learning 'quiet' when it's time for food, so she won't excitedly yell so loud that our neighbors can probably hear it... xD I'm proud of her, though! These days she's brave enough to stand up for herself against the other cats when play is too rough, or some such. (And she doesn't just run from them, like she used to! )

I have the biggest soft spot for Torties. My baby, Asami is a tortie and her personality is a joy. She talks a lot, plays all the time and when it’s time to rest she climbs on me and breathes on my face. I’ve never had a love so strong as I do for her (and of course her black coated brother and sister). Her little chirps and extra thumb (which hit the hardwood floor and sound like heels) all add to her beautiful personality. I love Torties and always advocate for them! 🥰

One of my past babies was a Tortie; she was petite with the attitude that filled the room, she totally dominated the other cats who were twice her size. And, yes, her reaction to catnip was over the moon on hyperdrive. She once totally tore apart a catnip stuffed toy within 5 minutes. I saw this big explosion of catnip erupt into the air, she them spun in circles, then rolled in the catnip that littered the carpet. She was a handful, but I wouldn't have given her up for the world.

Torties do not suffer fools and are very loyal to their owner. I lived in Baltimore and my loyal companion would catch anything that found its way in the house. One evening after work, I sat down for dinner and tv and there was a dead rat by my spot. I screamed but then realized she was so proud to take care of me. Also, if I was sick or sad, she would be right there by my sad and the most comforting companion a person could have.

I have two young tortis right now and recently had to say goodbye to a dearly beloved Torti. Most of my tortis have been extremely affectionate friendly and outgoing girls. Where I find tortitude comes out is that my girls are extremely intelligent, creative and opinionated animals. I adopted a tortoise two years ago. I called her Snickers because she was all in that candy colors. She is great company, always near me, and sleeps beside me but does not want to be cuddled too much. She bites when too affected. She has great energy but demands more freedom, she easily except my family and friends but does not want to be disturbed by cuddling and babbling. Definitely, not a good hunter even though she vowels on every fly or mosquito - she warns us about every bug in the house but rather brings home dried plants than the live catch. She protects everything in the house and does not jump or tear things apart so she is ideal for employed singles. Camera no needed because this cat will rather chew your pillow until you come home than make a mess in the house. Easy to train, use litterbox from the first day, can live on 200-300g of food when adult, prefers fish & chicken, but very adaptable. Prefers her own time to chill and have fun, but enjoys playing with balls and hunt imitating. Tortoise cats are great mothers, highly aware and dedicated to their kittens. Tortoise bears a small number of kittens, up to 3, so the kittens are born big and strong and very clever. Tortoise mother cats do not like and do not need much of our interference.
My cat Snickers was my best support during this period, like a real therapy cat. So I highly recommend and support the adoption of tortoise cats.

My calico was a rehome from a family with small children and another cat. She wasn't doing well there. She is lovely and affectionate, but definitely independent, and, at times, spicy. She puts her teeth on me. Never clamps down, so I wouldn't exactly call it biting, but puts her teeth on my hand to let me know she has had enough petting or to let me know she wants more. She's also incredibly smart. We're very happy together.

Our Brandi was a Tortie and perhaps the sweetest cat we’ve ever owned. She was a lap cat and Mama’s girl. My hubby and I sat next to one another with a lamp end table between our recliners and she would jump up on his chair, walk across his lap then the table and onto my lap where she’d settle in for some “warm fuzzies” time!! On the “other hip” we had a long haired Tortie who VERY MUCH fit the “Tortitude” bill. She was aloof! Very independent! Her “people” interaction was of her own doing and on her own time frame. One quick example was petting! She wasn’t prone to “lap time” or petting. Her idea of petting was, you had to put your hand out away from your body, preferably to the left or right with fingers extended and she would “grace you with her presents” by walking past you and “ALLOWING” your finger tips to l-i-g-h-t-l-y embrace the TIPS of her fur! She definitely was representative of your definition of TORTITUDE!! Thanks, Jackson for sharing your wisdom re: cats, yet again!👏🎉🥳🥰

I have a calico, Spidey, and I whole-heartedly believe that she is a little more sensitive because her previous owners declawed her front paws at a young age not because of her coat color. She does nip (kind of like a fake warning bite) when she is overstimulated which is often mitigated by the things Jackson mentions (playing, watching body language). But, she is the sweetest, cuddliest, most loyal kitty I have ever had.

My first tortie, Iris was the sweetest most loving kitty I've ever had so far and the reason I fell in love with torties. Every future tortie I have is because of her and I plan to never not have a tortie, I will always have at least one or more torties. So I feel like it just depends on the cat or animal in general just like it depends on a person's personality, but that might just be me. 😅
I got to see my baby, Iris when she was 5 days old and pretty much every week until she was old enough to be adopted. I don't really think she's had very much tortitude other than maybe being a little picky with her food and being a little princess, but she was my soulmate kitty. I miss her so much every moment of every day. The little saying of "If love could've saved you, would've lived forever." is extremely true for me and my partner. We lost so much the day she passed, but her memory lives on and she will be remembered eternally. Rest in Peace my sweet precious little love, Iris. You are furever in my heart.
