There is a reason the area off of Qualicum Beach can be rough with "weird" winds. Pull up a map of Vancouver Island and lets look at a wind heading South, out of the North. So the wind proceeds down both sides of the coast of Vancouver Island. But there is a long Inlet (fjord) through the Alberni Valley, find Port Alberni on the map. The closest point between the East and West Island is between Port Alberni and Qualicum Beach. So the wind heads south of the West Coast of the Island, and part of it veers off down through the Alberni Valley and continues over to Qualicum Beach where it meets up with the South wind heading south off the East Coast of the Island. At Qualicum Beach (the Qualicum winds), you have a confluence of winds, a bit confused and hence some find it difficult at times for boating.
