    I find it pretty amazing that this language has survived as a first language, even when the country is right next to England and placed right in the middle of the British Isles. And the way that they can sit around drinking beers and casually slipping between English and Welsh without really thinking about it is great.

      I stand corrected but people like me who live in south wales no longer speak welsh as a first language. Yes we learn it in school but our close proximity to England means we kinda dont have a choice when a comes to picking welsh as a first language

      SmellyWelshHobo - which will be why I learned it, my 3 daughters went to Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd and my grandchildren now go there - and why there are so many Welsh-Medium Primary schools in the city that's closest to the English border that a Welsh-Medium High School is planned

      to understand welsh, you need to add 'w' 'y' to the vowels, add O to the end of everything, and write a word as if you are writing it as a five year old would, eg, tools is twls

    • @SnowdropWood
      @SnowdropWood 9 років тому +5

      OmenGaming69 Not quite. It's not that simple. Tolkien drew from multiple languages when creating the different Elven languages. He actually drew most of the language structure and syntax from Finnish.

    • @Nornagast
      @Nornagast 9 років тому +15

      Hazel Quenya he drew from Finnish (mainly phonology to my understanding, and noun cases, but grammar is Indo-European). Sindarin he completely modeled after Welsh with some elements of Irish and Old English and Spanish.

    • @OmenGaming69
      @OmenGaming69 9 років тому +8

      He was inspired to write the language when he saw the name of a Welsh town on a coal carrige when he was a young boy. He thought it looked other-worldly.

    you do know welsh is older than english right? And the random english words you hear is basically because the language is so old there's no logical translation for it?
    Iwan also has a extremely strong accent and uses a lot of slang.

      almost all words he uses actually have a welsh alternative, but the richness of the language is kind of under appreciated in spoken welsh because it’s so easy to switch to an english word.

    To be honest I find Jon Snow's character boring as well, or at least I did when I first got into the series. When I bought the DVD's I pretty much skipped any scenes having to do with him or the Night Watch, The Wall, The Wildlings, etc. Kit's a great looking guy and can act but the character does nothing for me. But anyway, I'm an American who has never heard Welsh before so this interview is a treat for me. To whomever did the translations, thank you!

      @iandavidsson5674 10 років тому +3

      Yes, and church is eglwys, school is ysgol, It also has the double negative like french: Nid ____ ddim : Ne ______ pas. Celtic languages have certainly similarities with Romance languages due to a more recent common ancestral tongue compared to other branches.

    • @iandavidsson5674
      @iandavidsson5674 9 років тому +1

      ***** No, that's not what I mean, Italic and Celtic had a more recent divergence.

    • @iandavidsson5674
      @iandavidsson5674 9 років тому

      ***** Germanic languages are very different from the REST of Indo-European. It is actually a hypothesis that a lot of pre-Indo-European indigenous language might have influenced the development of Germanic. Celtic and Italic share closer roots. But that is also a theory for now, since the Roman influence even furthers the similarities.

    • @marconatrix
      @marconatrix 9 років тому +2

      ***** The ancient Brits lived through several hundred years of Roman occupation, unlike the Gauls etc. they kept their language which went on to develop into Welsh (and Cornish and Breton). They borrowed a lot of Latin words which became part of the language. Much as English borrowed lots and lots of Norman French words.

      If he's garbled and ineloquent here, than he's garbled and ineloquent in his native language. Many people are incredibly garbled and ineloquent when they speak their native languages and especially they can be so in interviews or at least in any one given interview. (However, the claim that he's garbled and ineloquent here is itself debatable. At times, maybe, but at others, no.)

      OmenGaming69 that is completely untrue, Celtic and Germanic are completely different

      Sorry, that was how I understood it. We were once both celtic, so I assumed. I was wrong, sorry.

      François-Marie Arouet en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_language :)
      That's not completely true. But apart from the fact that they are both indo-european languages, i as a german don't really think it sounds that similar. I didn't get any of it :D

      The Dragon Killer Welsh is most similar to the other Celtic languages (Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Breton, Manc, Cornish) but also has some Latin influences from the Roman conquest that further differentiates it from Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Manx. Seeing as German is not from the Celtic group of languages and lacks much of a Latin input, it's actually very different to German: the only similarity would be some of the English words incorporated into Welsh. Both Indo-European though, but that's a very broad similarity!

    Such an interesting language. They way they were speaking it made it seem like it was just an English dialect.

    Welsh speakers, please don't be mad, but I live in the USA and NOBODY on this side of the pond speaks this language and thus nobody can translate a word of the interview. Anybody willing to translate some? Pretty please?

      +Sweep Stakes You read the subtitles? HBO sent out hired guns with sniper rifles after the game of thrones cast. The Welsh are more dangerous then the British led us to believe.
